I have an EJ2.5 SOHC engine in a gyrocopter (RAF 2000). The engine has a grand total of 149 hours of run time since a complete commercial overhaul and installation in the gyro. The 149 hours includes about 20 hours of break in run time.
It has developed a coolant leak near on at the water pump. Which means, the way it is mounted, that I have to remove the timing belt to get to the pump, which means removing the crank pulley to get the timing belt cover off (2 of the three sections), which means pulling the engine off of the frame since the crank pulley is mounted about 1" from the main mast.
Does anyone have any input or advice on water pump failures on low time engines? On anything from what to look for to advice on R & R of components just on getting access to the water pump? I have determined that the leak, which is a steady slow drip, even with no pressure on the coolant system, is not coming from a hose connection anywhere. I do have the engine manual, or at least substantial parts of it. I am also an A&P, but have never worked on Soobs except to install this one.
I am fitting a 2:1 PSRU and plan to reduce the water pump speed. I have fabricated a pulley, the size of which reduces the pump speed by 16%.. Is this about...
