Hi Everyone,

Well, the forecast for tomorrow calls for temperatures continuing in the 30's.  I am concerned about people's safety on the icy streets and sidewalks and, frankly, about everyone's comfort out in these frigid conditions, so I am canceling tomorrow's Adopt-a-Street cleanup event.  I will reschedule next week when I am back in contact with the Met Market manager (he is currently out of town), and will let you know the new date then.

Thanks, everybody, for your interest!  Please stay safe and cozy this weekend.

WHAT: Tucker and the Orcas: the dog who's helping save the whales.

Lecture by Katherine Ayres, presented by The Whale Trail

Specially trained scat detection dogs are helping researchers learn more about the endangered southern resident killer whales. Katherine Ayres, Center for Conservation Biology, will describe how she selects, trains, and works with dogs on the water, and how Tucker is leading us to critical clues that can help save this iconic population.

Endangered cetacean populations are highly vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts, yet they spend the majority of their time under water, making them difficult to study.  Researchers must maximize information from biological samples while minimizing disturbance.  Fecal sampling is a powerful non-invasive method for gathering critical population data.  From a single fecal sample, marine mammal researchers can analyze host and prey DNA, hormones, pathogens and toxins.

Scat detection dogs are a valuable research method for maximizing fecal sample sizes in wildlife studies, while minimizing disturbance to the study organism. Scat detection dogs also can decrease sampling bias.  Ayres validated the detection dog method in Southern Resident Killer Whales with the help of Tucker, a black labrador retriever with a nose for delphinid scat. Come learn about this innovative research, and what it is telling us about the orcas.

About Katherine Ayres

Katherine Ayres is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Biology and the Center for Conservation Biology at the University of Washington and is a Northwest Fisheries Science Center fellow. Katherine received a BA in Biology from Pomona College in 2004 where she researched Evolution and Development in hydra and fruit flies.  She made a dramatic change in study systems to killer whales for her dissertation work! Katherine is interested in the use of non-invasive physiological monitoring tools for wildlife research.  She is also interested in using applied animal behavior to train detection dogs for conservation studies.  For her killer whale work she trained and handled a scat detection dog named Tucker from Dr. Sam Wasser's Conservation Canine program.

About the Whale Trail

The Whale Trail is a series of sites around the region where the public may view orcas and other marine mammals from shore. Its mission is to inspire appreciation and stewardship of whales and our marine environment. The project is partnering with groups, agencies and communities around the region to select and develop the Whale Trail sites, and to create and deliver educational programs. Rainer Beach Neighborhood Plan Update Community Meeting

9 a.m. to Noon.
South Shore K-8 School- 4800 S. Henderson Street, Seattle
Join us following the meeting for an open house (with food) from Noon to 1:00 p.m. to meet your neighbors.  There will be a Resource Fair where you can connect with community organizations and City Departments already working in your neighborhood. We want to hear from you. What makes Rainier Beach your neighborhood? What is important to keep, what’s missing, and what needs attention? Your information will help update the current plan. In the late 1990s, people in Rainier Beach worked together to create Rainier Beach 2014: A Plan for a Sustainable Future; your community’s plan to guide growth and change for the following 20 years. It’s time to take a fresh look at your neighborhood plan! Things have changed since 1999. One big change is the arrival of light rail. Another is the City’s increased effort to support the rich diversity of your neighborhood. Together, let’s make your neighborhood even better. Be Part of the Conversation!  There will be a series of community meetings to hear your suggestions on how to achieve your community’s vision. You will have the opportunity to help identify—and prioritize—goals and action steps for your neighborhood plan. Can’t make the workshop? Fill out a questionnaire at:

Greetings Everyone!

Tomorrow morning is our quarterly Admiral Neighborhood Association Adopt-a-Street cleanup of the Admiral business district.  Please join us at 9am at Metropolitan Market for fresh hot coffee, breakfast pastries, and fruit before we branch out and pick up trash on SW Admiral Way from the Admiral Viewpoint to Alki Mail & Dispatch (47th Ave. SW), and on California Avenue SW from SW Walker to SW Hanford.  Trash picker-uppers, safety vests, gloves, and bags provided.  Metropolitan Market will again graciously provide cleanup volunteers with a complimentary sack lunch after their good work.

All are invited - no ANA membership or prior signup required.  Just show up!  Kids are welcome, but parents please keep in mind that cleanup is along busier streets in the neighborhood.

Also, I will have the "Admiral" t-shirts and jackets available for sale at the ANA table (to be located in the sheltered area adjacent to Met Market's outdoor floral department).  Cash and checks welcome.

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Thank you in advance for your efforts,

Katy Walum
President, Admiral Neighborhood Association

To whom this may concern:

The purpose of this letter is to inform you about our fundraising goals for Chief Sealth International High School’s first ever Senior Grad Night.  Chief Sealth is located in West Seattle Washington near White Center.

Chief Sealth students are a diverse population with an even mix between Asian, African American, Caucasian, and Latino.  In addition to the vast diversity that is represented at CSI, we have many different income levels within the student population.   In order to make these seemingly normal high school experiences occur we need the communities’ support!

Our vision is to provide a safe and fun environment on the night of graduation!  A majority of area high schools have Grad Nights each year; however students at Chief Sealth have never been given this opportunity. This provides one last night with our friends and to thank the faculty that has stuck with us through our high school career.  We are so excited to start this tradition with the Chief Sealth class of 2011.  Our 2011 class is a community and needs this last night to celebrate our accomplishment.

The average cost per student for an event like this is nearly $150 per student when including events/locations, food, and transportation.  Our goal is to not exceed a cost of more than $50 per  senior, per ticket.  That’s where fundraising comes into play; we would love the communities’ help with food, prizes, and money.

Thank you so much for your time!

Sincerely,

Julianna Carlson                                Dong Dinh                           Obed Haile                          Sara Schendel

3rd Annual Bridge to Beach All Valley Clean Up Day

The third annual Bridge to Beach All Valley Earth Day Makeover will be held on Sunday May 1st 2011. The Rainier Valley will be awash with activity and celebration as hundreds of people from neighborhood groups, youth organizations, and businesses participate in a coordinated effort of getting dirty in order to clean up streets, parks, gardens and planting strips.  By the end of the day, our neighborhoods will look better as we celebrate the spring and pay homage to our planet.  During the 2010 Bridge to Beach Makeover, with over 250 participants, there was a flurry of trash collecting, graffiti removal, flower planting, weeding, mowing and a host of beautification efforts from one end of the Valley to the other.  Anyone can pick a project, such as clearing out a junky briar choked vacant lot or working on a traffic circle that needs tending, just form a team and register by April 25th .  Bridge to Beach participants can create their own project, or join an already organized team.  To join an already organized team contact the organizers listed below or check www.sngi.org.  The City of Seattle will provide trash grabbers, gloves, trash bags, and garbage pick up to get the jobs done.   For more information or to register: Nhi Tran at 206-322-6134 or via email at nhi@... ;Yun Pitre at 206-386-1924 or via email at yun.pitre@...; Online at http://www.sngi.org/registration_b2b.php

Hello Katy

There are so many wonderful happenings in Southwest Seattle that it is time for another update.

  • The West Seattle Be Prepared folks are bringing you a timely series during April which is Emergency Preparedness Month. The first workshop is this Thursday, April 7th. See attached flyer for details or go to their website: http://westseattle.bepreparedseattle.info/site/page40.aspx
  • Remember that cool idea that was shared at the Gathering back in September about 4 cottages on a lot with a garden in the middle. Anne Van Dyne is moving forward with the idea along with some others and would love to hear from people who are interested.
  • Providence Mt. St. Vincent would like to let you know that they are bringing a wonderful new approach to caring for people who need help staying in the community they love. Seattle is one of the few places in the country that makes this long term care model available. It is called Providence Elder Place. Contact sarah.ray@.... The Mount has also expanded it's transitional care capabilities for West Seattle residents just discharged from the hospital in need of rehabilitation services following surgery. These are important 'hospital replacement' services that are part of a 'hospital without walls' concept that are based locally in the community.
  •  Highline Medical Group is planning to bring Urgent Care to West Seattle by this summer. They will start by expanding hours at their current location and eventually move to a new location that will be open 7 days per week with extended hours. This supports a vision that Patti Mullen at the Chamber has for West Seattle being a destination for medical providers and specialists who want to serve your community.
