Hi,

I'd like to add just a few points to Diane's response.

I echo her point that learners can stay in equipment as long as they
want to.  My daughter has, at times, stayed in environments for well
over a hour. As Patricia Obrzut, MS OTR, of the Penrickton Center for
Blind Children (who we consider to be a top expert in Active
Learning) has said, "If you are on a schedule then you are not
practicing Active Learning", which I take to emphasize that the
learner should control their time in environments.  I think parents
can distinguish better than most between a child's objections due to
problem-solving frustration and the "I've given up" complaint.  As
Dr. Nielsen has said, never interrupt a child trying to solve a
problem.

Dr. Nielsen has also indicated that more but shorter sessions in
equipment are preferrable to one long session.   So my suggestion
would be to get your child into the Little Room more often, and, as
Diane has suggested, allow her to determine the end of stay.  Of
course, at the end of that play is the time to interact and let your
child tell you all their accomplishments. I get the biggest response
from our daughter by asking, "Are you a good player?". Lastly on this
topic, since our child tends to wear out toward the end of the day,
most of her sessions are earlier in the day.

On the topic of procuring a real Little Room,  LilliWorks does sell
kits, which just require sanding, gluing and finishing. If your child
does not sit up, a LR-1 model (the least expensive) is probably
appropriate.  Also, local public service organizations, such as Elks,
Lions, Mason, etc. may be able to help with both purchasing and
assembly (a local community college or high school woodshop might
also help with the latter)...  At age 3 in California, school
districts are responsible for a child's education, and are required
by law to supply any equipment required by a child's IEP --
LilliWorks has a sample Active Learning IEP available.

You might also consider the Support Bench, if you are not using it
yet.  It is an excellent way to free a child's hands and feet for
play.

It sounds like you and your child are busy exploring through Active
Learning, and we wish you continued success.

My name is Diane Montgomery and I am using Active Learning in Indio,
CA.  I would like to meet all of you!!  I have been using Active
Learning for about four years.  It has transformed my students into
learners!!!  I teach children with develomental delays usually
cognitively functioning under two years reguardless of their
chronological age.  Typically my students do not progress a lot at
school, but by using the active learning curriculum, I am able to
document very specific growth.  Both parents and administrators love
it.  Many of my students acquire one to two hundred skills within one
year.  Many of these skills are difficult to recognize without Dr.
Nielsen's assessment.  I have two students who are actually learning
to
walk now.  I have done extensive work with using the assessment and
curriculum, aligning it to the district standards, writing IEP's,
etc.
I have taught Active Learning at Chapman last year in the teacher
credentially program.  I am open to any questions that you may have.
If I do not have a clue as to the answer, I will look for one.  I
would
like to get this group up and going, so please share your Active
Learning challenges and successes.  Hope to year from you soon.  Diane

Hi,

I am new to this group. I am a stay at home mom of three. I have two
boys, Delbin and Jaedan and a girl, Tatiana.

Tatiana is blind because of a brain tumor she had 95% removed when
she was 8 months. She is now two and is getting early intervention
services here in Hillsboro, Oregon where we now live and is also going
to therapy at NeuroTherapeutics in Oregon City. You can see their
website at http://nt4kids.com/ She is working on sitting up and we are
trying to help her strengthen her upper body. She doesn't crawl or
walk yet. She is also only breastfeeding and eating mushy foods or
things that dissolve. She is tactile defensive with others when they
touch her and some gooey things.

Dear Active Learning Friends,

I am a Mother of a 6 year old with multiple-disabilities.  We found
out about Active Learning 3 years ago.  My son has really made a lot
of progress in this time both at home and at school.  He went from a
6-9 month average three years ago to a 9-24 month average.  He still
has very scattered skills, but he continues to build on his own
stregths.

My son attends an average public school with an extraordinary teacher
and administrators.  I started to introduced this information to my
son's teacher and through my persistance she began to show interest.
Respectfully, I began by brining in my homemade position boards and a
few of the books by Dr. Nielsen.  I also asked the teacher to stop
the hand-over-hand activities that made my son so mad.  The teacher
was impressed to see the changes in my son within the first month.
Since then the teacher and I have both attended the conferences by
Penrickton Center and Lilliworks.

This year has been very exciting year for my son's classroom.  They
now have an Active Learning Classroom with equipment!  His teacher
has really taken a lot of effort to learn about Active Learning and
she applied for special grants through the school system to get the
equipment.  It is through her hard work that our kids now have a
program in the classroom that actually works.

Our friends, family, and my husband and I, have also contributed to
the Active Learning classroom by donating countless bags of dollar
store items, supplies, toys, and 5 ressonance boards (based on
Lilliworks plans) we made for the classroom.  I have found that
people really want to help - but they just don't know how.  It has
been so impressive to see how generous they have all been.

This year - the kids have really shown improvement.  I volunteer
regularly in the classroom, so I get to see the changes in the kids
and it is truly exciting.  To most people it may not look like they
have made many changes, but they are huge steps for our kids.  We get
so excited when we see a child reach for something for the very first
time or when they begin to explore with their feet.  We have had
several parents and grandparents come in wanting to know how we are
getting their kids to move.  They are usually very surprised to see
how much their child is actually doing in the classroom!

I encourage all of you to start working with Active Learning at home
(since our kids are home more than they are at school).  Make your
own peg-boards with objects attached, or set a baking pan filled with
objects for your child to explore at their feet.  Let your teacher
know what you are doing at home, so that when they start to see
improvements they will know it was from your work with Active
Learning.

I apologize for the delay in posting this response, as I thought postings
would be sent to LilliWorks automatically, which was not happening.

The videotape of the North American Active Learning Convention (NAALC), held
Feb. 2005, is planned, but is not available yet.  LilliWorks is dealing with
the financial impact of the convention and of greater overhead, having moved
to commercial space. Currently, we hope to have a "raw" edit of the
Convention available towards the summer.  That will be a pretty large set of
tapes simply chronicling the 3 day (~24 hours!) convention with Dr.
Nielsen's last training, and presentations by about a dozen other speakers.
Following that release, the plan is to produce more focussed and augmented
tapes on specific topics.

LilliWorks has a new Active Learning Newsletter in the works, a website
revamp, and a new catalog out soon. We have been busy filling orders and
building the organization, as our limited resources will allow.

We would like to plan the next Active Learning Convention, and the first
step is to form a Convention Committee to help set the time and place and to
connect with the rest of the Active Learning community. Please contact
LilliWorks if you'd like to assist that effort.

Active Learning, at this stage, is fundamentally dependent on the community
of teachers, parents and therapists who practice it to share and communicate

I have the Resonance Board, Hopsa dress, Little Room,Essef Board,
Support Bench and am looking for new activities for children now
beginning to walk, crawl, and climb on their own.  I'm also looking
for videos from Conference in Calif. from last year.  I feel things
have really dropped since Lilli bowed out.  Hopefully, I am wrong.

I am a special education teacher working with a 10 moth old who is
visually impaired and developmentally delayed. I have the active
learning book on order right now. I would love to get any ideas for
lightweight toys that work well for the little room or playing with. I
am working on motivate her to reach and grasp toys. Thanks!
