Community RainGarten WormFarm Kioskaping on the B-Line/Eco Media Cen   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #203 of 204 |
Hello ALL,    Feel free to FWD this message to anyone who may help or be interested...

The Eco Media Center of Monroe County (a CSL non-profit project) has received approval from the City & local property owners to plant an eco-kiosk garden array right next to the B-Line rail-to-trail (which will have its grand opening on Friday, June 26th).

The site is along the backside of the Boomerang/Bike Project building owned by Kemp Logan just where NE corner of the parking lot of B-foods West (formerly Encore Cafe) opens up behind Le Petit Cafe.

The plan is to construct a living kioskape with ad space & free/public bulletin boards that incorporate rainwater catchment, xeriscaping, vegetable/herb gardens, worm composting bins, shaded seating & covered bikeracks, recycling bins, birdhouses & artwork/sculpture into the design.

Recent developments:
STONEBELT may be able to begin picking up COMPOST from Shalom Community Center.
A Dept o' Corrections work-crew should be available next week to assist w/construction.
Construction should happen ideally by the 26th.  Volunteer help & community contributions still necessary.  Permacultural consultation also welcome.

We are using reclaimed items from the Habitat ReStore & other donated items & plan to use only re-used or eco-friendly materials in this microcosm green build.

Some supplies are still needed, though much has already been accumulated in storage.
We need: Saws, drills & hammers & related building supplies.
Old doors, windows, lumber, furniture & cisterns/fixtures still very welcome.
Wooden or metal rainbarrels, water filters & buckets would help.
Screens, fabric,  planters, pots & garden tools also needed.
Eco-friendly paints & varnishes.
Plants, seeds, sand & soil as well.
A bird condo for Martens?
Belfry/Bat House?

Funds for the display cases, publication bins, signage, seating & printing costs would be greatly appreciated & signs/placquards for businesses or organizations can be exchanged for donations (money or materials).

Please respond ASAP to be included in the creation of this permacultural prototype project.
Other details about the project follow below this signature...please scroll down....

thanx,
Mylo Roze

Living Kioskapes/Pillars of Community:
Below is an outline of new project/initiative of the Eco Media Center of Monroe County, a CSL non-profit project.

Within it is a variety of possibilities, but the prototype will likely be fairly simple -------with the main features being a rain barrel/cistern as the core of an info kiosk that would also have plants growing around the rim (on top).  A cylindrical or hexagonal kiosk with covered/controlled adspace & also an open bulletin board.

This gardeninfo array would be regularly inspected/maintained by me, Mylo Roze, of the Eco Media Center.

The controlled adspace will bring revenue to the Eco Media Center, Holistic Affordable Housing, CSL & the CSL Food Project.  The idea is that it will be protected from the weather & guaranteed not to be covered up by other flyers.

CSL would get a percentage of proceeds from ads (which I will request go to their Food Pantry Project).  The plants grown on the kiosk will also be given as free food.

Of primary importance at this stage are cisterns/rain barrels & water filters...

So far:
~Kemp Logan/Boomerang Salon is cool with hosting garden, cistern & kiosk space.
~Bloomingfoods - Coordination, Rain-Barrel, leftover stone aggregate/pavers?
~Mother Hubbard's & others have already pledged plants (herbs & veggies).
~Jeanne Leimkuhler of the Natural Bldg Group has offered plexi-glass remnants.
~I have gathered scrap wood, varied materials (mostly old doors), tools & supplies have them in storage.
~Have a few coark boards & a few aquariums.
~Have offers of worms for food-waste composting.
~Another person has a 6 foot glass panel for us.
~Mick Harrison (Atty) is willing to help financially with what we cannot glean as in-kind donations, but more funders are needed to create a network of kiosks & bulletin boards around town.
~Bloomington Pedal Power willing to pick up recyclables.
~Indiana Stone Suppliers willing to donate stone in return for plaque.

Still needed:
~Folks w/trucks & tools (to help move materials & pick up compost from kitchens)
~Soil/Compost/Vegetal matter
~Worms - for visible compost operation
~Screws, carpentry supplies & expertise
~Rain barrel/cistern/buckets/bins
~Greywater filtration system
~Plumbing fixtures
~Birdhouses/feeders
~Old doors, windows & the like
~A dresser/bureau? (to function as recycling bins)

~Living Kioskscapes or Pillars of Community:

Functions:
PermaPodule pillars & posts for posters & bulletin boards that also serve as stormwater mitigation, as an herbal raingarten, community cistern, terrarium aquarium, solar generator, decorative planter, art gallery, worm compost & recycling bin, info center/newstand, gathering place, greenspace, rooftop garden, greywater filter, wireless internet node, bird bath/feeder & home/wildlife habitat, & landmark/rallying point.

Looks/Size/Materials:
Varied, naturalistic, artistic.
Round & hexagonal like Buddhist stupas/Chinese pagodas, Roman pillars, Muslim minarets. Probably between 5 & 7 feet in diameter, 8-9' tall.
Cob & Bamboo &/or six discarded doors clustered to create waterbooth.
Recycled wood, discarded construction waste, bottles & trash.

Income:
Ad revenue from controlled, weather protected postings & display cases.
Lease them to the City?/Parks & Rec

Possible Options/Obstacles:
Issues of easements/ordinances/variances/decisions about connections to sewer system.

Sites: (OASIS PermaCulture reclaimed empty lot-near 2nd & Washington)
Placement along B-Line rail trail/City Hall/Farmer's Market, Kirkwood, Business establishment properties, as part of 'Intersection/City Repair' projects (Green Acres), Eco Center/Harmony Downtown grounds, new Dog Parks...
