Our community of meditation and contemplation is devoted to training and
nurturing those who deeply long for the direct experience of union with the
eternal, pure center of consciousness, the bliss of being that is one with the
absolute reality, as the wave who seeks to remember it is one with the ocean.
One word for that union is "Yoga." The word "Abhyasa" means "practices." Abhyasa
is purposefully choosing to do that which leads to "sthitau," which is a stable,
steady, undisturbed inner calmness or tranquility. Abhyasa is one of the twin
foundations of Yoga, along with Vairagya, the mental stance of non-attachment
(Yoga Sutras 1.12-1.16). The root of the word Ashram is "shrama," which means
"effort" or "striving." The hermitage or home of a swami or other person serving
people in their efforts towards inner peace and spiritual awakening is called an
Ashram. Thus, our community of meditation, contemplation and learning is known
as Abhyasa Ashram. More than any physical location, it is really a place of the
heart, an inner sanctuary of silence.

NEWS
We have started the process of incorporating the ashram and attaining nonprofit
status. Over the coming year we will consolidate finances and seek to acquire or
build a larger ashram. Details will be announced as known.

Dualism and Nondualism

We may believe in one or the other of the philosophies of Dualism or
Non-Dualism. We may see these philosophies as either contradictory or
complementary. However, when we want food or sex, or feel threatened, we
automatically respond from Dualism, not Non-Dualism.

REFLECTIONS:
Be quiet when you scream.
Scream with joy when you are quiet.
Love.

Traditionally, Yoga (Sanskrit: union) has referred to the realization through
direct experience of the preexisting union between Atman and Brahman, Jivatman
and Paramatman, and Shiva and Shakti, or the realization of Purusha standing
alone as separate from Prakriti. Yoga is the realization of union between the
microcosm of individuality with the macrocosm of universality.

where you go nowhere.

ABHYASA ASHRAM:
The word "Abhyasa" means "practices." Abhyasa is purposefully choosing to do
that which leads to "sthitau," which is a stable, steady, undisturbed inner
calmness or tranquility. Abhyasa is one of the twin foundations of Yoga, along
with Vairagya, the mental stance of non-attachment (Yoga Sutras 1.12-1.16). The
root of the word Ashram is "shrama," which means "effort" or "striving." The
hermitage or home of a swami or other person serving people in their efforts
towards inner peace and spiritual awakening is called an Ashram. Thus, our
community of meditation, contemplation and learning is known as Abhyasa Ashram.
More than any physical location (especially given its tiny size), it is really a
place of the heart, an inner sanctuary of silence.

CENTER FOR NON-DUALISM
Our Center for Non-Dualism has gatherings each Sunday morning. Details about the
Center, the gatherings, location, and times are on the website:
http://www.centerfornondualism.org/

PURPOSE OF OUR ABHYASA ASHRAM COMMUNITY:

Our community of meditation and contemplation is devoted to training and
nurturing those who deeply long for the direct experience of union with the
eternal, pure center of consciousness, the bliss of being that is one with the
absolute reality, as the wave who seeks to remember it is one with the ocean.
One word for that union is "Yoga."

Yoga is traditionally taught, practiced and learned through a close relationship
between the individual mentor and mentee, teacher and student, in a community of
noble friends, known as kalyana-mitra. Guru is a force-field driven by grace, a

person, is itself not a person.

GOAL OF PRACTICES:

The goal of our sadhana or practices is the highest Joy that comes from the
Realization in direct experience of the center of consciousness, the Self, the
Atman or Purusha, which is one and the same with the Absolute Reality.

This Self-Realization comes through Yoga meditation of the Yoga Sutras, the
contemplative insight of Advaita Vedanta, and the intense devotion of Samaya Sri
Vidya Tantra, the three of which complement one another like fingers on a hand.

We employ the classical approaches of Raja, Jnana, Karma, and Bhakti Yoga, as
well as Hatha, Kriya, Kundalini, Laya, Mantra, Nada, Siddha, and Tantra Yoga.
Meditation, contemplation, mantra and prayer finally converge into a unified
force directed towards the final stage, piercing the pearl of wisdom called
bindu, leading to the Absolute.

The activities are mostly in Fort Walton Beach, Florida or nearby communities.
Most are at Abhyasa Ashram or are graciously sponsored by other people at
different locations. While I seldom travel, there are a handful of other
activities in other cities. Please contact me if you have any questions or
requests.

ARTICLES:
Yoga Nidra – Yogic Conscious Deep Sleep
http://www.swamij.com/yoga-nidra.htm
The form of Yoga Nidra being described in this article can be called Advanced
Yoga Nidra. In recent years Yoga Nidra has been distorted in ways similar to
Yoga itself. Unfortunately, almost any guided practice that brings a modicum of
relaxation is now called Yoga Nidra. Therefore, it is now virtually essential
that we use another term, such as Authentic Yoga Nidra, Traditional Yoga Nidra,
or Advanced Yoga Nidra. I've opted for the term Advanced Yoga Nidra in this
article.

Yoga Nidra means Yogic Sleep. It is a state of conscious Deep Sleep. In
Meditation, you remain in the Waking state of consciousness, and gently focus
the mind, while allowing thought patterns, emotions, sensations, and images to
arise and go on. However, in Yoga Nidra, you leave the Waking state, go past the
Dreaming state, and go to Deep Sleep, yet remain awake. While Yoga Nidra is a
state that is very relaxing, it is also used by Yogis to purify the Samskaras,
the deep impressions that are the driving force behind Karma.

Complementary practices: In the tradition of the Himalayan masters, Yoga,
Vedanta, and Tantra complement one another, leading one systematically along the
path to Self-realization. The aspirant clears the mind through the practice of
Yoga meditation as codified in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, does self-enquiry
of Vedanta, and then breaks through the final barrier with Tantra, experiencing
the heights of kundalini awakening.

Yoga Sutras 1.1-1.4: What is Yoga?
http://www.swamij.com/yoga-sutras-10104.htm

Being prepared to start: To sincerely begin the pursuit of Self-realization is a
most significant step in life, when the highest goal of life is taken on as
number one on your list of things to do. The first word of the Yoga Sutras is
atha, which means now (1.1). This particular word for now implies a preparedness
in arriving at this auspicious stage of desire and commitment towards
Self-realization, the highest goal of Yoga.

Definition of Yoga: The first four sutras define Yoga, with that definition
being expanded upon in the other sutras. In a systematic process of meditation,
you gradually move your attention inward, through all the levels of your being,
gaining mastery along the way (1.2). Eventually you come to rest in your true
nature, which is beyond all of those levels (1.3). This action and the
realization of this center of consciousness, is the meaning of Yoga.

Knowing what's left after setting aside the obstacles: There is a fundamental
simplicity to the process of Yoga that is outlined in the Yoga Sutras. While the
process might appear very complicated when reading the Yoga Sutras and many
commentaries, the central theme is one of removing, transcending or setting
aside the obstacles, veils or false identities. The many suggestions in the Yoga
Sutras are the details or refinements of how to go about doing this. By being
ever mindful of this core simplicity it is much easier to systematically
progress on the path of Yoga.

The true Self shines through: Once the obstacles and false identities have been
temporarily set aside, the true Self, which has been there all along, naturally
comes shining through (1.3). The rest of the time, we are so entangled with our
false identities that we literally do not see that this misidentification has
happened (1.4). It is the reason that sometimes it is said that we are asleep,
and that we need to awaken. That awakening to the Self is the meaning of Yoga.

Like a mirror: Consciousness looks outward, through the intellect, through the
mind, and then through the senses and body. It sees a reflection, like a mirror.
It sees reality, a world, a self-identity, which it falsely thinks to be "me" or
"mine." Through the forgetting power of avidya or ignorance (2.5), pure
consciousness says, "I am this or that!" This is not all bad, for it gives the
opportunity for the joy of awakening, through a journey called Yoga, returning
to the wholeness that was never really divided in the first place.

*****************

REFLECTIONS:
To be a miner of diamonds,
take care of your picks and shovels.
To be a miner of your spiritual Self,
take care of your body, breath, and mind.
But don't confuse the tools and the goals.
The goal of Yoga (union) is Yoga (union), period.

Update: June 24, 2010

Seven Skills for Meditation:
http://swamij.com/sevenskills.htm
There are many Yoga techniques that can be learned. In pursuing those
techniques, one can be left with a bewildering sense of uncertainty about "why"
all of the methods are being learned, aside from a general idea that the methods
are for "Self-Realization" or "Enlightenment".

Difference between techniques and skills: To put it simply, there is a vast
difference between a skill and the methods or techniques that were used to
attain that skill. Think of the way an infant does many actions in those early
months and years. The child may be playing with this or that toy, or exploring
the new environment of this new world. Yet, all of the play and exploring leads
to development of a few underlying skills, such as the motor skills of being
able to hold an object in the hand, or to move the legs so as to go from here to
there.

Techniques are tools to gain skills: In Yoga science, all of the techniques are
used to develop certain skills by which one can meditate at a depth that will
reveal the Center of Consciousness, the Self within. It is not so much a matter
of the techniques themselves being important, but rather the techniques are
tools to cultivate the underlying skill.

We have been using gotomeeting.com for our gatherings, but it has a limit of 15
participants and 1 organizer. Because we have been reaching that level, I
"upgraded" to gotowebminar.com (same company), which is supposed to accommodate
up to 100 participants. However, it does not permit usage of the same meeting
number as a "recurring" meeting. This creates a login problem for everybody, as
there would be 4 different meeting numbers each week. I'm trying to find a
workaround through their tech support, but so far I've found no convenient
solution. To "upgrade" (for a lot more money) it seems odd to lose features.

extremely useful, if not essential in the practice of Yoga.

Purusharthas, Four Aspects of Human Life:
http://www.swamij.com/purusharthas.htm
There are four aspects or facets of human life: dharma, artha, kama and moksha.
They have to do with living one's purpose, having a stable foundation in the
world, wisely fulfilling desires, and freedom from the constraints of one's
false identities. Each of these is a part of life. While it may be true that
ultimately the goal of life has only to do with final liberation (moksha), the
others are virtually essential steps along the way. Recognizing this is one way
of holding the suggestion to live "in" the world, while not being "of" the
world.

Guru is a force-field driven by grace, a
stream of knowledge of direct experience which, though it may operate through a
person, is itself not a person.

Please contact me if you have any questions or
requests.

We are now under contract for the purchase of a 4500 square foot building as
home for the ashram (Abhyasa Ashram, Inc.) with closing anticipated by end of
August. It is in Fort Walton Beach just off Mary Esther Boulevard. Today we met
with the City of Fort Walton Beach regarding zoning and have received approval
of the location for an ashram.

Dear Friends, Yogis, and Yoginis,

We have announced in recent newsletters that we are in the process of expanding
the ashram. This expansion involves incorporating the ashram as a non-profit
organization, acquiring a new building, and expanding learning systems. We are
also trying to improve our communications with the people who are most
interested in the ashram. I have met, received emails and calls from thousands
of people over recent years, and it has been very difficult to keep track of who
is most interested in what we are doing through the ashram [There are over 2,000
people currently on my newsletter and email lists].

Therefore, as a means of improving communications with those who are most
interested in what we are doing, we are setting up a "membership" for the
ashram. Since we/I do not charge money for any programs or personal
consulting/training, the membership is set up the same way, having no fees.
Rather, your commitment is to yourself in doing the practices. If you are drawn
to, or are already practicing the principles and meditation methods taught by
the Himalayan tradition, Swami Rama, Swami Jnaneshvara and Abhyasa Ashram, there
are three ways in which you may be involved as a member of the ashram:

1) PRACTICING MEMBER: It is my wish and intent to do the practices of meditation
as taught by Swami Rama and which are described in Swami Jnaneshvara's writings
on the SwamiJ.com website. I attempt to do these practices daily, and commit to
practicing within my own comfortable capacity. [This way of involvement may be
ideal for those who are far away, especially in countries other than US.]

2) PARTICIPATING MEMBER: In addition to doing practices (the Practicing
Members), I wish to be part of the ongoing volunteer activities that keep the
ashram thriving for all of us. This may include teaching or facilitating
activities, maintaining the building, office activities, or other skills I have.
If I do not physically live close, I wish to volunteer in some other way, or
when I visit from time to time. [This way of involvement may be ideal for those
who live close or visit from time to time.]

3) SUPPORTING MEMBER: In addition to the activities (above) of Practicing and/or
Participating members, I believe in the goals of the ashram and intend to
provide financial support through donations from time to time (whether smaller
or larger donations) for the ashram and its programs. I understand that the
ashram operates solely through the generosity of its members.

Membership established any time through the end of 2010 is effective until the
end of December 2011. Any time after July 1, 2011 you may reaffirm your
membership and practices through the end of 2012.

Mindfulness and Concentration
http://www.swamij.com/mindfulnessconcentration.htm

It is very common for teachers of meditation to describe one of two general
types of meditation, and to recommend one as being superior to the other.
Concentration: In this approach, one intentionally focuses the attention on only
one object, such as breath, mantra, a chakra center, or an internally visualized
image. Mindfulness: In this approach, one does not focus the mind on one object,
but rather observes the whole range of passing thoughts, emotions, sensations,
or images. Students of meditation often find themselves confused by having to
decide which is best, having to practice only one or the other of mindfulness or
concentration. To cause further confusion, mindfulness is often described as
coming from one religion or tradition, while concentration from another religion
or tradition.

Guru is a force-field driven by grace, a
stream of knowledge of direct experience which, though it may operate through a
person, is itself not a person.

Please contact me if you have any questions or
requests.

Training the Ten Senses or Indriyas

Like a building with ten doors: In traditional Yoga philosophy and practice, the
human being is seen as being like a building with ten doors. Five are entrance
doors, and five are exit doors. Consciously, actively and intentionally
witnessing these ten senses as they function is an important part of Yoga
meditation, and meditation in action.

This afternoon (August 17) we closed on the purchase of the new building. As
things happen with fixing up the ashram, we'll keep you informed through this
newsletter.

This Saturday (August 21) from 10am to 2pm we'll have a "soft opening" (in
contrast to a "grand opening") so that everybody can visit and see the building
and hear how we plan to use the space. We'll have beverages and snacks. From
11:30-12:00 we'll have our regular silent meditation. Bring a cushion if you can
please, as we won't yet have all the cushions and blankets transferred from the
townhouse.

Location:
Abhyasa Ashram
505 Hooper Drive
Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548

This is immediately behind Chili's and the adjacent tune up shop on Mary Esther
Blvd. There is parking for about 20 or so cars. If the parking is full, there is
plenty of room along Hooper Drive.

great forces of spirituality and science," and that "problems can be solved by

ARTICLES:

Source of Inspiration on Learning, Teaching, and
Training
http://www.swamij.com/inspiration.htm

Swami Rama has suggested that the teachings must be put "in as simple a manner
as possible," and that "the presentation should be understandable and beneficial
to all." He suggests that, "balance can be found by bringing together the two
great forces of spirituality and science," and that "problems can be solved by
creating harmony between realism and idealism."

Our Himalayan tradition, though a tradition of Shankara, is purely ascetic, and
is practiced in the Himalayan caves rather than being related with institutions
established in the plains of India. ~Swami Rama (describing the tradition of the

CURRENT ACTIVITIES:
(Mostly Fort Walton Beach, Florida area)

MOST DAYS, 11:30 am - 12:00 pm
Silent Meditation; satsang after.

Satsang means coming together in truth.

MOST DAYS, 6:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Silent Meditation; satsang before and after meditation

FIRST FRIDAY, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Satsang, topic discussion, tea and food. Please suggest a topic or a question
either directly from your readings and practices from the Yoga Sutras, or that
can be related to the Yoga Sutras in our discussions. These are informal
gatherings, which have been happening monthly since 2001. They are usually quite
fun and informative. Sometimes there are only a few people; other times it's a
bit crowded.

SATURDAY (+2), 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
On the Saturday that is two weekends after the first Friday (15 days after the
first Friday) there is satsang, topic discussion, meditation, food/prasad.
Please bring topic questions from sources such as Yoga Sutras, Upanishads, books
by Swami Rama, or articles from SwamiJ.com. (This generally falls on the third
Saturday of the month, but sometimes falls on the fourth Saturday)

Please contact me to arrange private time to talk about life, meditation

Guru is a force-field driven by grace, a
stream of knowledge of direct experience which, though it may operate through a
person, is itself not a person.

Please contact me if you have any questions or
requests.

Seven Skills to Cultivate for Yoga Meditation
http://swamij.com/sevenskills.htm

there is a vast difference between a skill and the methods or techniques that
were used to attain that skill. Think of the way an infant does many actions in
those early months and years. The child may be playing with this or that toy, or
exploring the new environment of this new world. Yet, all of the play and
exploring leads to development of a few underlying skills, such as the motor
skills of being able to hold an object in the hand, or to move the legs so as to
go from here to there.

REFLECTIONS:

We do not believe in conversion, changing cultural habits, or introducing any
God in particular. We respect all religions equally, loving all and excluding
none. Neither do we oppose any temple, mosque, or church, nor do we believe in
building homes for God while ignoring human beings. Our firm belief is that
every human being is a living institution or a temple. (Swami Rama on the
tradition of the Himalayan masters)
