It may seem odd to have instructions on how to use a website, but the need comes
from the common statement of people that while they love the articles on the
website, they don't know where to get started. By understanding the way the site
is intentionally designed, it might be easier to use.

Online discussion:
What is Yoga?
Throughout the website the word "Yoga" is used in its traditional meaning of
spiritual realization, rather than the revisionist meaning of Yoga as a physical
fitness program. Traditionally, Yoga (Sanskrit: union) has referred to the
realization through direct experience of the preexisting union between Atman and
Brahman, Jivatman and Paramatman, and Shiva and Shakti, or the realization of
Purusha standing alone as separate from Prakriti. Yoga is the realization of
union between the microcosm of individuality with the macrocosm of universality.

Our community of meditation and contemplation is devoted to training and
nurturing those who deeply long for the direct experience of union with the
eternal, pure center of consciousness, the bliss of being that is one with the
absolute reality, as the wave who seeks to remember it is one with the ocean.
One word for that union is "Yoga." The word "Abhyasa" means "practices." Abhyasa
is purposefully choosing to do that which leads to "sthitau," which is a stable,
steady, undisturbed inner calmness or tranquility. Abhyasa is one of the twin
foundations of Yoga, along with Vairagya, the mental stance of non-attachment
(Yoga Sutras 1.12-1.16). The root of the word Ashram is "shrama," which means
"effort" or "striving." The hermitage or home of a swami or other person serving
people in their efforts towards inner peace and spiritual awakening is called an
Ashram. Thus, our community of meditation, contemplation and learning is known
as Abhyasa Ashram. More than any physical location, it is really a place of the
heart, an inner sanctuary of silence.

David Frawley, an internationally recognized scholar and teacher, is quoted in
the Sep/Oct 2000 issue of Yoga Journal: "Yoga in the West has only scratched the
surface of the greater Yoga tradition," he says. "The Yoga community in the West
is currently at a crossroads. Its recent commercial success can be used to build
the foundation for a more profound teaching, aimed at changing the consciousness
of humanity. Or it can reduce Yoga to a mere business that has lost connection
with its spiritual heart. The choice that Yoga teachers make today will
determine this future."

Archery and the Art of Reducing Karma through Yoga
http://www.swamij.com/archery-karma-yoga.htm
The ancient sages of Yoga and Vedanta use the metaphor of Archery as a teaching
tool for how to work with and reduce karma through the process of Yoga
meditation. In Yoga Meditation, Karma is of three kinds: Sanchita, Kriyamana,
and Prarabhda, using the metaphor of three kinds of arrows in archery. Karma
Yoga is the Yoga that emphasizes doing Yoga while also doing actions in the
world, or Meditation in action.

REFLECTIONS:
If one day I say I am a Buddhist, the next a Christian,
the next a Hindu, the next a Jew, the next a Muslim,
and the next something else, has the "I" actually changed,
or only the opinions of the mind? Who am I?
That cannot be answered with a mere opinion of mind.
It can only be experienced in the stillness and silence
of direct experience, wherein these divisions evaporate.
May all humans one day see that
we all are of the same one source.

Living the Four Ashrams of Life
http://www.swamij.com/four-ashrams.htm
In the ancient Indian tradition, one planned the years of life in four ashrams
or stages, with the style of Yoga practiced in each stage chosen to match the
circumstances of that stage.

REFLECTIONS:
Judge each day not by the harvest you reap, nor by the seeds that you plant, but
by the stillness of your mind in meditation.

NEWS
We have started the process of incorporating the ashram and attaining nonprofit
status. Over the coming year we will consolidate finances and seek to acquire or
build a larger ashram. Details will be announced as known.

Dualism and Nondualism

We may believe in one or the other of the philosophies of Dualism or
Non-Dualism. We may see these philosophies as either contradictory or
complementary. However, when we want food or sex, or feel threatened, we
automatically respond from Dualism, not Non-Dualism.

REFLECTIONS:
Be quiet when you scream.
Scream with joy when you are quiet.

ARTICLES:
Yoga (as the term is used on SwamiJ.com)
http://www.swamij.com/yoga-note.htm
Throughout this website the word "Yoga" is used in its traditional meaning of
spiritual realization, rather than the revisionist meaning of Yoga as a physical
fitness program.
Traditionally, Yoga (Sanskrit: union) has referred to the realization through
direct experience of the preexisting union between Atman and Brahman, Jivatman
and Paramatman, and Shiva and Shakti, or the realization of Purusha standing
alone as separate from Prakriti. Yoga is the realization of union between the
microcosm of individuality with the macrocosm of universality.

REFLECTIONS:
The most important trip you'll make in life
is the trip into meditation,
where you go nowhere.

MOST DAYS, 6:00 pm - 6:30 pm

bit crowded.

On the Saturday that is two weekends after the first Friday (15 days after the
first Friday) there is satsang, topic discussion, meditation, food/prasad.

by Swami Rama, or articles from SwamiJ.com. (This generally falls on the third
Saturday of the month, but sometimes falls on the fourth Saturday)

ABHYASA ASHRAM:
The word "Abhyasa" means "practices." Abhyasa is purposefully choosing to do
that which leads to "sthitau," which is a stable, steady, undisturbed inner
calmness or tranquility. Abhyasa is one of the twin foundations of Yoga, along
with Vairagya, the mental stance of non-attachment (Yoga Sutras 1.12-1.16). The
root of the word Ashram is "shrama," which means "effort" or "striving." The
hermitage or home of a swami or other person serving people in their efforts
towards inner peace and spiritual awakening is called an Ashram. Thus, our
community of meditation, contemplation and learning is known as Abhyasa Ashram.
More than any physical location (especially given its tiny size), it is really a
place of the heart, an inner sanctuary of silence.

CENTER FOR NON-DUALISM
Our Center for Non-Dualism has gatherings each Sunday morning. Details about the
Center, the gatherings, location, and times are on the website:
http://www.centerfornondualism.org/

PURPOSE OF OUR ABHYASA ASHRAM COMMUNITY:

Our community of meditation and contemplation is devoted to training and
nurturing those who deeply long for the direct experience of union with the
eternal, pure center of consciousness, the bliss of being that is one with the
absolute reality, as the wave who seeks to remember it is one with the ocean.
One word for that union is "Yoga."

Yoga is traditionally taught, practiced and learned through a close relationship
between the individual mentor and mentee, teacher and student, in a community of
noble friends, known as kalyana-mitra. Guru is a force-field driven by grace, a
stream of knowledge of direct experience which, though it may operate through a
person, is itself not a person.

GOAL OF PRACTICES:

The goal of our sadhana or practices is the highest Joy that comes from the
Realization in direct experience of the center of consciousness, the Self, the
Atman or Purusha, which is one and the same with the Absolute Reality.

This Self-Realization comes through Yoga meditation of the Yoga Sutras, the
contemplative insight of Advaita Vedanta, and the intense devotion of Samaya Sri
Vidya Tantra, the three of which complement one another like fingers on a hand.

We employ the classical approaches of Raja, Jnana, Karma, and Bhakti Yoga, as
well as Hatha, Kriya, Kundalini, Laya, Mantra, Nada, Siddha, and Tantra Yoga.
Meditation, contemplation, mantra and prayer finally converge into a unified
force directed towards the final stage, piercing the pearl of wisdom called
bindu, leading to the Absolute.

The activities are mostly in Fort Walton Beach, Florida or nearby communities.
Most are at Abhyasa Ashram or are graciously sponsored by other people at
different locations. While I seldom travel, there are a handful of other
activities in other cities. Please contact me if you have any questions or
requests.

ARTICLES:
Yoga Nidra – Yogic Conscious Deep Sleep
http://www.swamij.com/yoga-nidra.htm
The form of Yoga Nidra being described in this article can be called Advanced
Yoga Nidra. In recent years Yoga Nidra has been distorted in ways similar to
Yoga itself. Unfortunately, almost any guided practice that brings a modicum of
relaxation is now called Yoga Nidra. Therefore, it is now virtually essential
that we use another term, such as Authentic Yoga Nidra, Traditional Yoga Nidra,
or Advanced Yoga Nidra. I've opted for the term Advanced Yoga Nidra in this
article.

Yoga Nidra means Yogic Sleep. It is a state of conscious Deep Sleep. In
Meditation, you remain in the Waking state of consciousness, and gently focus
the mind, while allowing thought patterns, emotions, sensations, and images to
arise and go on. However, in Yoga Nidra, you leave the Waking state, go past the
Dreaming state, and go to Deep Sleep, yet remain awake. While Yoga Nidra is a
state that is very relaxing, it is also used by Yogis to purify the Samskaras,
the deep impressions that are the driving force behind Karma.
