Hello all,

I'm just now jumping in here, and already so encouraged by what I'm seeing
of the organization. I started working on the "depth" side of things, but
I'm suddenly intrigued by the persona challenge. Looking forward to finding
my inspiration while hanging out with y'all!

I guess I should write up a PDF on necklines as well then!

As for your sewing machine problem, you might want to get a service tech to look
at your treadle. Sometimes they get junked up, and basically become binary,
instead of having the usual, expected range of speeds as a function of foot
pressure.

Enjoy!

I bought my machine brand new, and have used it less than half a dozen times, if
that. It's not junked up. It started out that way. I press slowly, slowly,
slowly, until it starts moving, then I wiggle one toe and suddenly it's in
another county.

I am sure you have looked for this, adn I am not trying to be insulting, but
this came as a revalation to me in my latest machine. Some new machines have
settings which can be used to lower the maximum speed at which it can operate.
Look at your instruction book, and see if your has one. Then you could set it at
a slower speed.

…No, I didn't know that, and I didn't know to look for it. As I mentioned, I've
used that machine less than half a dozen times. That's all I've ever used a
machine (or any other kind of sewing except emergency button repair). Okay, when

A challenge to all my friends and associates in the SCA:

How much did you spend on SCA stuff last month? Event and feast fees, fabric,
travel, new gear or repairs to old gear?

I'm challenging you to send that much to the Red Cross to help the people in
trouble after Sandy.

If you didn't do anything Scadian last month, send the price of an event and
feast, or the price of a batch of brew, or if you're hurtin', the price of a
roll of duct tape. Remember, somebody's worse off than you.

Please help this message travel, and thank you for anything you can give.

Respects,
Ursula Mortimer

Or use your SCA links to help in those areas where the Red Cross or other
organisations
aren't able to work. Those trust relationships we have through our participation
in the SCA
can go a long way to filling small, but the important, gaps.

We didn't see anything of the Red Cross, Civil Defense or any other aid agency
after the big
earthquakes here, but we were personally able to organise/accept donations from
across
Lochac, get the funds to some mobile SCAdians who still had functioning
supermarkets, and
get bootloads of essential supplies delivered to informal volunteer-based
groupings in the
hardest-hit suburbs -- this included one lady willing to stock up in her town
and drive an hour
up here to drop off goods.

It's really good for the soul to be involved in something like that -- and it
really stuns the folk
to hear it's a living history group behind the initiative!

from katherine, who has been scheduled a proper scoping of house damage this
week, 20
months after the main earthquake occurred....

i use a simple running stitch and load the needle with seven or eight stitches,
a fitted thimble is critical, and then pull the thread through being careful not
to pucker the fabric. i do one back stitch before i begin loading the needle
again. this is a technique that transfered over from hand quilting. it works
well, goes at a manageable pace and looks pretty good although my grandmother
would shake her head and probably make me do it over.
may i suggest practicing on small garments for the smalls in your general
vicinity. it's great practice, doesn't cost an arm and a leg and they wind up
looking so damned cute.
moira nic connell the strongbow
by the way, thimbles will be in the notions section of your fabric store and the
needlework section of craft stores. you want the kind with a lip around the top
so the eye of the needle doesn't slide off into your knuckle. when you find one
that fits, get the sizes on either side smaller and larger. if you are like me,
my finger shrinks and swells with temperature and humidity.

My first machine (a basic Brother I received as a graduation gift in 2001) was
like that. The speed demon hated flimsy pretty fabrics but would happily sew
canvas. There was no slow. Just sewing fast, growling furiously, or sleeping. He
has mellowed out with use, but now  the foot pedal seems to be going bad,
leading me to suspect it might have had a defect from day one. Now it just seems
not to notice every other time I press on the pedal. It's a great machine,
though.
You may just have to break it in... sew lots of easy boring straight lines that
don't need (m)any pins and you will get used to it and it will calm down
eventually. It will still terrify your friends, though, if mine is any
indication.

those machines can go slow, you just have to use your hand on the wheel to get
them started. If you try just foot pedal it can't overcome the resistance to
get started until it hits high speed.

FWIW, it seems to be mostly yahoo, hotmail and AOL email accounts that get
hacked. This doesn't seem to happen so much with gmail. You might consider
changing to gmail if you have one of the above. Or adding a gmail account
for some purposes only to limit the damage.

I have 2 gmail accounts, one for lists and personal stuff, one for banking
and online purchases.

The other thing that everyone should have is a firewall (in addition to an
antivirus. I've been using AVG for some years now and it's worked very well
for me. I'm now using the paid version, but the free version works just as
well -- it has fewer bells and whistles, but is otherwise as good.

I took steps to change my password, so it SHOULDN'T happen again...at least I
hope not!

About a month ago, I got notice from gmail that an attempt had been made from
China to log in on my gmail account ... I still changed the password.

Sorry, folks, but my email obviously got hacked.

I've changed my passwords, so hopefully this won't be an issue again.

Only nice thing about this was discovering just how many groups of
fascinating and talented people I have worked with during the 17 years
I have had this account! My contacts list is freaking enormous! >.<

Best wishes,
Susan/Sigil/Siggi/Albreda or what ever other name you know me by!

So has the email of quite a few other people in the SCA,
apparently. I've seen too many of the hacked bits,
and almost as many of the apologies - in almost identical
language, which I'd find amusing if it weren't so
bothersome.

Wee Catherine has now completed her first item! On the 20th, she built two
tabletop catapults for us to have our own battles. We tested them out by firing
them down the main hallway--with our cat Pumpkin "recovering" our ammunition.
They work great!

Dearest Judith, Would you kjndly give us a link to directions or point us in the
right direction for plans? This is something I'd like to make!
