Hey folks -

I have had three really, *really* interesting emails in the last few days; folks
offering to be Coordinators, folks who are setting up Wikis, etc, and I'm really
excited.

I'm also still SWAMPED in catching up with my homelife after getting my Dad home
from rehab, and all that entailed. (I'm miraculously not sick (my body's usual
reaction when getting over a stressful period), but I AM *exhausted*.)

Ergo, if you have written to me in the last few days *pretty please with jam on
BE PATIENT*; I *will* get back to you, but it might be a few days.

Meanwhile, maybe some of our lurkers can share what they've been up to lately??

Thanks folks!
Albreda

Well let me see, finishing up Bow #2, which I have fondly named
"Artemis", so I can donate it, to be sold in a Silent Auction(listed
below) at Fall Coronation this weekend. The bow is a Fiberglass and
Mahogany veneer backed Hickory Flatbow. Target draw weight 40-45lbs, at
28" to be donated with a handmade Flemish twist string for the Silent
Auction. Pictures I just uploaded to my photo folder on the yahoo
group...

Silent Auction to Benefit Mistress Elfwin
Saturday Noon in the Gymnasium
hosted by Thalassa Knossos Hellas

Earlier this year, Mistress Elfwyn de Barfleur suffered a brain aneurysm
and was hospitalized for an extended period of time. She has now
returned home and her medical condition necessitates that her house be
upgraded to accommodate a motorized chair. These upgrades would include
a ramp into her house, the widening of doorways, and the remodeling of
the bathroom. A local contractor has volunteered to supply the labor if
the cost of supplies can be covered.

At Fall Coronation, a silent auction will be held on Saturday in the Gym
beginning at 12pm and running until 5pm with all proceeds to go towards
these upgrades. If anyone has SCA-related items they would like to
donate, they can bring them to me at any An Crosaire meeting up till the
actual event or to HL Melangell merch Mariot at Marcaster meetings. At
Fall Coronation, any items the populace would like to donate in support
of this project can be brought to the Gym prior to the start of the
auction.

Meanwhile, maybe some of our lurkers can share what they've been up to
lately??

Thanks folks!

Dear Albreda and Hugh,

I was talking to the class coordinator for Harper's Retreat in Stonemarche (New
Hampshire, USA) and discovered that no one had signed up to run an A&S 50
session this year. Since I was not sure if either of you were headed that way, I
told Ragnar I would do so and it will be on the schedule for SUNDAY at 2pm in
the main hall. I welcome any help/participation with this session. Last year we
had a great time introducing new people to the challenge and spent alot of time
showing off some of the things that participants were already doing. Hope to
have enough flyers and will let you know how it goes afterwards. Unfortunately,
I no longer have internet at home, so I am only online sporatically- if you need
to contact me, please call my cell at (704) 699-2515. To everyone else- have a
great Labor Day weekend!!!

Sincerely,

Anne of the Fuzzy?Hat?

I love the SCA - that folks would get together to help someone out like
this is such a grand thing! And that bow sounds MARVELOUS!

Hi Folks,

What is KnoWoPerWriMo you might ask?

Its the Known World Persona Writing Month being held over on LiveJournal or the
blogging spot of your choice. Its an offshoot/amalgam of both NaNoWriMo and
NaBloWriMo, for which we've hashed out an A&S 50 version:

Write about your Persona, or in your persona's voice either:
A) In a blog or diary every day for the month of November, or
B) A set number of words during the month of November (10,000 words)

So if the idea of blogging in persona piques your interest, take a look at our
LJ community for more details:
http://community.livejournal.com/knowoperwrimo/profile. You've got a couple of
month's lead time to get prepared.

I'm starting today with a busy period in my persona's life, fall/winter 1586-7.
Come on over and check things out, its a lot of fun!

Like the A&S 50 challenge, KnoWoPerWriMo is what you make of it. I have
found it to be a very useful exercise for fleshing out my persona story.
Here is a link to my journal: http://lucianus.livejournal.com/111934.html. I
will be beginning in persona posts this evening.

This actually sounds like a TON of fun - and a great way for people who have not
done a lot of persona work to "get to know themselves" better. ;)

But but but - it's in November! Those of us doing Nanowrimo are already kicking
out 50,000+ words of a novel in November. How are we supposed to add another
blogging requirement on top of that? :)

Maybe I can merge them. Do a novel that is a series of journal style entries of
my SCA persona. Don't know, but it's an idea.

You could merge them or you could just do KnoWoPerWriMo on another month.
There's nothing cast in stone! Just list A&S 50, it is what you make of it.

It is a ton of fun!!! I try to post a little "this day in history" everyday
as well as personna questions that tie in with it. This way if you hit
writers block you have something to help you through. Luckily I keep these
up ALL year (just go through the archive) so if you would like to do it in a
different month-all the stuff is there.

However, one of my favorite things is reading other people's posts. We have
some amazing people who have done a lot of great research into their
personnas.

Hi, everyone. I'm delurking to post some progress. :o)

I've done two of my A&S 50 projects so far - both pewter casting.

The first was a small batch (7) of bardic coins for my household (ship). Our
commodore suggested it would be cool to have special coins members of our group
could give to bards who particularly go 'above and beyond' at Pennsic or other
events. (We're all bards ourselves, so music is a big deal to us). So I cast
those before Pennsic this year. That was my first-ever attempt at pewter
casting.

Our local group (the Shire of Rivenvale) holds an annual event in September
known as Saxon Summer, and when the autocrat found out I was into casting, he
asked if I'd like to help cast the site medallions. He learned casting a few
years ago at Pennsic, and has been casting the site medallions ever since. I
said "sure!" so today I carved my mold and cast 60 medallions. Yep, all in one
day. On the one hand, goes to show pewter casting isn't really that time
consuming; and on the other hand, goes to show it would be nice not to be such a
procrastinator. ;o)

I made a folder in the "photos" database titled "Rayne's Projects", and pictures
of the Adventures in Pewter are now there.

Though I mostly lurk with little to say, I read all the posts, and I want to say
that I am really enjoying this! I was in an SCA slump for awhile, but this has
completely renewed my interest, and I'm really excited about not only all my
plans, but all the wonderful things everyone else is doing! I'm feeling
inspired. Thanks!

Greetings! I extend much gratitude to two people who have done service for
the A&S 50 Challenge in the Kingdom of Northshield.

Kudrun Pilegrim and Katerinka Lvovicha desired to hold a meeting of those of
us involved in the Northshield branch of this challenge, and contacted the
autocrat to confirm it was permitted, announced it throughout Northshield,
found meeting space at the event, and ran the meeting.

In addition to sharing our progress in our challenges, we decided that as
Northshield, we wished to have some token to wear to indicate that we are
participants. Katerinka sketched out what this meeting thought was a good
badge that merged both the Known World A&S 50 Challenge emblem and our own
north star. Further discussion will happen on our yahoo group,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Northshield50Challenge. We will continue to
share the interesting things with this Known World list, of course.

Thank you for your attention on this fine day. Wishing you much success and
satisfaction in your own A&S endeavours!

Sorcha

Besides the A&S50 meeting, we also had a treasure hunt. "What has that to do

Here is the update on my challenges

I am within one dye lot of completing my first challenge (dyeing 50 yards of
fabric). I had planed t have it completed by today, but I do my dyeing outdoors
and the weather has seriously not cooperated-Yesterday for example was one rain
squall/thunderstorm after another. I am currently at 38 yards-I have 15 yards to
indigo dye. Of the yardage dyed so far, 28 yards were dyed in a mix of Lac and
fustic, 7 yards in yellows made from tansy with an overdye of myrobalan.

On challenge #2 Personna, I have competed one kosode set. The outer kosode is
shibori dyed with a larch pattern. A second outer kosode is in progress, and
will be dyed with a leaf pattern in spiderweb shibori. It is tied up and waiting
for dye. I have collected a kimono roll of orange striped silk and and some
lavender silk for two under kosode, as well as ivory sik for another outer
kosode.

For kumihimo, I already have several marudai and have collected an assortment of
threads. At AnTir's Autumn War, I found a merchant with a takadai which I
snapped up. (Now I need to get/make loom weights for it.) However, I will use
the marudai for the challenge.

I'm probably going to have to revise/or eliminate the dance portions of this
challenge: at 58, my knees have started giving me trouble-I can't kneel down and
get up easily anymore-drat). Learning Shamisen is going along. I haven't started
translating Heian-era saibara into shamisen notation (bunkafu) yet.

I (along with 9 other shamisen students) took part in a mass performance at the
Tokyo National Theater last September. For anyone interested, my daughter
uploaded 2 video clips from the dress rehearsal on YouTube.
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s5tquaRarw -or look for Tstormchik on YouTube)
We were doing TsuruKame-I was one of the singers-I show up in the upper left of
the screen (white/light kimono with solid red obi) I have since sung it solo
three times (including at my daughter's wedding reception), and as part of a
trio twoce.

On challenge #3-needlework

I have collected yarn (wool and alpaca yarns) and fabric for Nasca/Paracas
embroidery. I have completed one piece of Turkish embroidery-the AnTir lion for
a pouch which I donated to the crown, through the barony of Blatha an Oir, for
Largesse.

I really need to take some photos and put them on the A&S 50 site...

And now, back to my regularly scheduled lurking....

That sounds so beautiful! Do you have pictures? I've drool proofed my

located? I will look up the utube vid as soon as I get home.

I have joined the group so I can read what others are working on, at least. My
persona will find writing to be a challenge since Siglinde Harfnerstochter is an
illiterate housewife. I suspect the posts will be about what is going on inside
her brain each day, rather than journal entries as such. My goal will be to try
and write about what I know or am learning about northern Merovingian society
using Siglinde's voice. I'm looking forward to seeing if I can find something
interesting to write about every day, or whether Siglinde's life turns out to be
the same round of dishes, diapers and dusting drudgery that can sometimes be the
lot of a housewife even today.

Cheers, Siglinde

Siglinde,

I see from your blog page you are into childrens activities. I love them
also. Perhaps you could write about what you do to keep the children active
and learning.

Hello out there in A&S50 land.

I am excited and ya'll will probably laugh but .I finally got some of my
work up on the web. My A&S 50 challenge is 50 period necklaces recreated
from dig reports. I taught a class at Pennsic called "5 Centuries of Beads
at Lightening Speed." I enclosed the first 5 necklaces for my challenge -
Dutch 550-600 (Merovingian), Castledyke Grave 115 Anglo-Saxon, Birka 515,
Isle of Man - "Pagan Lady" and Eura. Only 45 more to go!

So, on Friday one of the folks who took the class at Pennsic tracked me down
by googling my SCA name (how scary) and asked if he could use my handout for
a class he was teaching and he posted it to his website in PDF format. So,
www.twistedfire.com <http://www.twistedfire.com/> at the bottom of the page
is my handout and references.

Thanks for letting me share my excitement!

Greetings,

I am Miriam bat Pessah. I want to thank Lord Hugh for introducing me to the
A&S50 Challenge. Although I do not post much, I am really awed to read what
some of you are working on.

My version of the Challenge is to keep track of SCA related things that I do
that involve some new element beyond what I have done before. I really like
the idea of keeping track of the new things I do; I'm sure it will help me
see just how much I learn and grow in SCA related skills. I also feel
priviledged to participate in a project that emphasizes the wonderful,
encouraging atmosphere the SCA creates.

So far, I have done some cooking and scribal related projects. Two
neighbors offered us the grapes off their grape vines. One neighbor had
ripe grapes. The grapes are now juiced and fermenting into wine. (This
isn't exactly a "new" project, but last time we tried to make wine was about
30 years ago.) The other neighbor had grapes that weren't quite ripe. We
picked about 5 gallons of grapes, and they are now sitting in my freezer
waiting for us to juice them into verjus. We keep kosher, and I have never
been able to get kosher verjus, so being able to make some was really
exciting. Once that is done, I will have to try using the verjus in all
sorts of recipes I haven't been able to try. More new projects, and you can
eat them, too.

Waiting for my attention is using some more period materials in my scribal
work than I have done before. I now have a selection of period pigments
which I am looking forward to trying, a step more authentic than the
commerical gouache I have been using until now.

Looking forward to playing in lots of new ways, and to hearing what you all
are doing.

Miriam
