Attend a very special screening of the new film: BEYOND CLOSED DOORS I hope you
will be able to join us for the premiere of "Beyond Closed Doors," exploring the
current scientific, ethical and political forces shaping farm animal welfare in
our country. Special guests will be in attendance, including Sheriff Joe
Arpaio!

6:45 PM on Saturday, October 14th
Arizona Science Center in Phoenix
LIMITED ADMISSION.

Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance. Contact Hugh Dorigo for

Unlike many documentaries on animal treatment, BEYOND CLOSED DOORS (BCD) is not
horrifying to watch. Instead, Sandgrain Films has taken a comprehensive look at
the correlation between science, ethics, and the politics of farm animal
treatment. Two years in the making, BCD is a powerful, informative, and
thought-provoking film that relies on contrast and comparison of agricultural
practices around the world, to make a case for the ethical and humane treatment
of farm animals.

Interviews with scientists, veterinarians, farmers, professionals, welfare
groups and consumers, illuminate important issues rarely covered in the
mainstream media. To see a list of the professionals featured in the film, visit
http://sandgrainfilms.com

Using Arizona's current debate over Proposition 204 as an example of the
dividing forces at work, the documentary paints a vivid picture of the conflict
between the PR machines that feed the fears of all involved.

Even though the subject is grave, the one hour documentary leaves viewers with a
renewed sense of hope and the feeling that much positive change can and will be
accomplished for our society by citizens concerned about the future. The film
ends with a reminder that animal welfare is not a partisan issue but truly a
moral and ethical challenge, which deserves our attention as a nation.

Vote YES on Prop 204

• It is cruel and inhumane to confine calves and pigs in crates so
small they can't even turn around and extend their limbs.

• Even animals raised for food deserve humane treatment.

• It was never an Arizona tradition to intensively confine pigs or
calves in two-foot wide cages, and Prop 204 will help protect
Arizona's family farming heritage.

• Prop 204 is supported by The Arizona Republic, Arizona Daily Star,
East Valley Tribune, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, radio legend Paul Harvey,
the Arizona Humane Society, the Humane Society of the United States,
National Catholic Rural Life Conference, and the National
Environmental Trust.

PETA is asking KFC to eliminate the worst abuses that chickens suffer
on the factory farms and in the slaughterhouses of its suppliers,
including live scalding, life-long crippling, and painful debeaking.
The more than 850 million chickens killed each year for KFC are
tortured in ways that would result in felony cruelty-to-animals
charges if cats or dogs were the victims, but KFC still refuses to
make changes. As the leader in the chicken industry, KFC has a
responsibility to ensure that the chickens raised for its buckets are
protected from the worst cruelties. Visit
http://www.kentuckyfriedcruelty.com for more info.

Some people will start claiming their spots at 6am, so if you have
your own leaflets, head out early! The Fiesta Bowl Parade is
Arizona's largest single-day spectator event. More than 400,000
people will line the streets of central Phoenix to enjoy the parade.
The Fiesta Bowl Parade is free to attend.

The parade will begin on Central Avenue, just north of Montebello
Avenue. It will travel south to Camelback Road, then east to 7th
Street, and then south again to the finish just south of Minnezona
Avenue.

There are no specific parking designations for the Fiesta Bowl
Parade. If you are lucky enough to find a spot on the street, take
it. Otherwise, there will be parking lots charging in locations all
along the parade route. Make sure you park on the side of the parade
route that you want to leave from--it may be difficult getting around
the parade route for several hours after it begins.

The reason I am writing is to inform you of a small launch event
taking place in January for the 2007 got milk? tour called "Think
About Your Drink". The program encourages women to stop before they
sit down to a meal and choose milk over a soda, a soft drink or
coffee.

This Launch Event for "Think About Your Drink" is taking place on
January 8th from 10am-11am (staff times from 8:30am-12:00pm) at the
City Hall in downtown Phoenix. The event is strictly aimed at media,
so we do not envision a huge crowd of consumers. Staff pay is
$12/hour and we will pay you for a minimum of 4 hours. The setup and
breakdown is extremely minimal, as we have several signs, 2 tables, a
media backdrop and some milk samples to distribute.

Dress attire is khaki pants and comfortable sneakers. A shirt will be
distributed onsite.

If you are interested and available, please let me know ASAP. Hiring
is on a first come, first serve basis. Hope to hear back from you
soon and I will provide additional information at that time.

Thank you!

AZVegan.com <http://azvegan.com/> is proud to introduce three new ways
to take action, here and now, for the animals! We are focusing on three
specific areas where you can take action any day of the week, working
around your own schedule! If you are interested in participating in any
of these projects, please email us right away ( projects@...
<mailto:projects@...> ) to let us know which projects you would
like to work on! We are happy to provide you with materials and
guidance for all of these projects.

AZVegan Restaurant Outreach: We will be reaching out to local
restaurants to encourage more animal-friendly menus. Requesting more
vegan options, removing items such as veal and foie gras from the menu,
etc. We will provide tips on the best ways to reach out to restaurants
near you and give you materials that you can pass on to them.

AZVegan Leafleting: Leafleting is one of the most effective ways to
reach out to the public. We want to create an army of people leafleting
in Arizona! We will provide information on locations and events, and
will either provide materials or will direct you to where you can get
them for free. If you want, we will try to pair you up with others in
your area when possible.

AZVegan Writers: If you have a way with words, we need you! We will
provide you with topics, talking points, and contact info. You send the
emails and/or letters from the comfort of your own home! This is a
GREAT project for people who can't/don't get out much. (This is
separate from AZVegan Voices which meets in person to write letters and
will be resuming monthly meetings soon.)

I am also happy to announce that Kelly Cooney and Dawn Ratcliffe have
joined me to make AZVegan a more effective tool for our activist
community! They are both amazing activists and have already been
working their tails off to help out on AZVegan projects. They will be
working with me to send out activist alerts to the three new project
groups.

The nation's largest pork producer, Smithfield Corporation, has just
agreed to phase out the use of gestation crates!! (Smithfield's produces 15.6
million hogs annually and its clients include McDonald's and Wal-Mart.) This is
a tremendous step forward in the humane treatment of farm animals! Arizona
activists played an important role by passing Prop 204 and showing industry that
the public demands the humane treatment of farm animals. The
following is a press release sent out by the Humane Society of the
United States:

The Humane Society of the United States Praises Smithfield Move to
End Confinement of Pigs in Gestation Crates

Nation's Largest Animal Protection Organization Calls the Change
a "Monumental Advance" for Animal Welfare

WASHINGTON (January 25, 2007) — Calling the company's
announcement "perhaps the most monumental advance for animal welfare
in history of modern American agribusiness," The Humane Society of
the United States (HSUS) today praised Smithfield Corporation, the
nation's largest pork producer, for announcing it has agreed to phase
out the confinement of pigs in gestation crates over the next
decade. The decision comes after voters in Arizona and Florida – in
ballot initiatives spearheaded by The HSUS – approved measures to
outlaw the crates. The Arizona measure, Proposition 204, was approved
in November by 62 percent of voters, in spite of a vigorous campaign
by industry to defeat it.

"This is an earthquake in the pig industry," stated Wayne Pacelle,
president and CEO of The HSUS. "Gestation crates are one of the most
inhumane confinement systems used in modern agribusiness, and this
decision is a signal by the industry leader that these crates have no
place in the future of American agriculture. The Humane Society of
the United States calls on the other major pork producers to follow
Smithfield 's lead, and rid the industry of this extraordinarily
inhumane confinement system."

Gestation crates are two-foot by seven-foot metal cages that house
breeding pigs. The sows have a gestation period of four months, and
are in the crates for nearly their entire pregnancy. After giving
birth, they are re-impregnated and placed back in the crates,
enduring perhaps 8 or 10 successive pregnancies in the crates before
the animals are reproductively "spent." The crates are so restrictive
that the animals can't even turn around for months on end. Pigs
confined in gestation crates suffer both leg and joint problems along
with psychosis resulting from extreme boredom and frustration.

Confinement in gestation crates is so abusive that the entire
European Union is phasing out the practice, with a total ban taking
effect in 2013. Numerous American animal scientists also oppose these
cruel crates. Farm animal expert Dr. Temple Grandin
states, "Gestation crates for pigs are a real problem...Basically,
you're asking a sow to live in an airline seat...I think it's
something that needs to be phased out."

Under Smithfield 's plan, breeding sows will instead be housed in
group pens in which they have some freedom of movement and the
ability to socialize.

C. Larry Pope, Smithfield Foods CEO stated in a press release, "While
this will be a significant financial commitment for our company over
the next 10 years, we believe it's the right thing to do."

Florida citizens voted to prohibit gestation crate confinement in
2002, and the Arizona measure was approved in 2006. The HSUS has been
considering replicating these campaigns in other states in the 2008
elections.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest
animal protection organization with nearly 10 million members and
constituents. The HSUS is a mainstream voice for animals, with active
programs in companion animals, disaster preparedness and response,
wildlife and habitat protection, marine mammals, animals in research,
equine protection, and farm animal welfare. The HSUS protects all
animals through education, investigation, litigation, legislation,
advocacy and field work. The nonprofit organization is based in
Washington and has field representatives and offices across the
country. On the web at www.humanesociety.org .

This is an outstanding article in today's Arizona Republic highlighting the
recent 204 victory and the effect it is having nationwide.

Arizona voters truly made difference

In the Chinese zodiac, 2007 is the Year of the Pig, which is
remarkably appropriate.

America's largest pork producer has announced it will no longer
confine pregnant pigs in crates so small the animal cannot turn
around. You probably remember these "gestation stalls." Use of such
cruel and inhumane enclosures was banned in Arizona when voters
approved Proposition 204 this past November.

There was quite a campaign to discredit the proposition and
characterize it as the product of vegans gone wild.

The hog industry, opponents of the ban claimed, would go out of
business if they couldn't use gestation crates.

But voters didn't buy that. The vote wasn't even close. Sixty-two
percent said to ban the crates.

Before the campaign, most people didn't even know about how factory-
farmed animals live. When they were made aware of what was going on,
people wanted it stopped. Arizonans recognize the responsibility that
comes from having power over other living things.

Arizona was the second state to ban confining pregnant animals to
these tiny stalls. Florida did it in 2002. The Humane Society of the
United States was considering taking the campaign to other states.

The pork industry was paying attention.

In announcing a 10-year phase-out of gestation stalls, C. Larry Pope,
chief executive officer of Smithfield Foods Inc., said, "Working with
our customers, who have made their views known on the issue of
gestation stalls, we are pleased to be taking this precedent-setting
step." Customers told them "they feel group housing is a more animal-
friendly form of sow housing," he said.

Smithfield doesn't have a hog-raising facility in Arizona, but the
Virginia-based company owns 187 sow farms in eight states.

Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, said
Arizona's vote was a "major factor" in the Smithfield decision.

Of course it was. Industry responds to public pressure, and the
public's feeling on this issue was clearly stated.

This makes speaking up look like a remarkably appropriate thing to
do.

ADLA Legislative Alert: Bill Could Overturn Prop 204 in Five Years

State lawmakers have introduced a bill that would allow the
Legislature to overturn Prop 204 (Humane Farms Initiative), despite
the fact that voters overwhelmingly approved the measure.

SCR 1015, referenda and initiatives; legislative restrictions
(C.Gray, Allen, Bee, Burns, Flake) authorizes the Legislature to
repeal, amend, or supersede an initiative five years after voter
approval.

To access bill text and details go to:
http://www.azleg.gov/DocumentsForBill.asp?Bill_Number=scr1015

Remember Last Session?
In 2006 lawmakers tried to pass a measure targeting the Humane Farms
Initiative. The fact that Prop 204 has now been voted into law
apparently isn't going to prevent legislators from again trying to
kill it.

Background
In 1998 voters passed Prop 105, a Constitutional amendment which
forbids the Legislature from repealing initiatives passed by voters.
SCR 1015 would amend Prop 105 to allow lawmakers to revoke or amend
initiatives five years after the election. If SCR 1015 passes it
would appear on the 2008 ballot.

Why This Bill is So Dangerous
If this bill passes, the Legislature could overturn Prop 204, the
Humane Farm Law, in five years – before the law even takes effect.
And since the bill as written is retroactive, lawmakers could also
repeal the citizens' initiatives that banned trapping and
cockfighting.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
This bill will be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday,
February 5. Please contact committee members and urge them to Vote
NO on SCR 1015. If you volunteered on Prop 204 or other initiatives,
let them know. If your Senator is a committee member, let him or her
know that you are a voter in their district.

Your presence is urgently needed at a forthcoming peaceful
demonstration to protest the horrific, unspeakable treatment of dogs,
cats and other wild species in China, the largest exporter of fur in
the world.

Undercover footage, as seen on Larry King Live (CNN) in December of
2005, documented animals being slammed against the ground or being
bashed with clubs. Some animals are skinned alive and thrown onto a
pile of other dead and dying animals where they continue to live for
up to 30 minutes. See link below for transcripts of Larry's show:
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0512/11/lkl.01.html

Also, let us not forget the recent massacre of over 50,000 dogs in
China as a solution to a rabies outbreak. See this link for
information:

It is imperative that we send a message around the world. The press
mainly cares about the number of participants at protests, so please
attend and bring your friends. Banners, posters and leaflets will be
provided. Please keep your companion animal on a leash. Dog
sanitation will be monitored. Nearby street parking is available.

Please contact Morningstar Farms and politely request that they remove

Behind the vast majority of every "incredible edible" egg sold in
grocery stores today is a hen so intensively confined inside a wire
battery cage, she can barely even move. With just 67 square inches of
space in which to live, she can't even flap her wings, let alone build

Celebrity Chef Announces Strict Animal-Welfare Policy
By KIM SEVERSON

Wolfgang Puck, the Los Angeles chef whose culinary empire ranges from
celebrity dinners at Spago to a line of canned soups, said yesterday
that he would use eggs and meat only from animals raised under strict
humane standards.

With the announcement, Mr. Puck has joined a small group of top chefs
around the country who refuse to serve foie gras, the fattened liver
of ducks and geese. But Mr. Puck, working with the Humane Society of
the United States, has taken his interest in animal welfare beyond
ducks.

He has directed his three companies, which together fed more than 10
million people in 2006, to buy eggs only from chickens not confined
to small cages. Veal and pork will come from farms where animals are
not confined in crates, and poultry meat will be bought from farmers
using animal welfare standards higher than those put forth by the
nation's largest chicken and turkey producers. Mr. Puck has also
vowed to use only seafood whose harvest does not endanger the
environment or deplete stocks.

"We decided about three months ago to be really much more socially
responsible," he said in a telephone interview from Los Angeles. "We
feel the quality of the food is better, and our conscience feels
better."

Many chefs at high-end restaurants, some smaller food-service chains
and grocery chains like Whole Foods have refused to buy meat and eggs
unless animals are raised under certain conditions. In 2000,
McDonald's became the first American food company to impose minimum
animal-welfare standards, like increasing cage size, on its egg
producers. But Mr. Puck's program goes much further than most
corporate animal-welfare policies, and he is the flashiest culinary
name yet to join with animal rights groups in the movement to change
farming practices.

Mr. Puck's ventures include 14 fine-dining restaurants mostly on the
West Coast. The flagship is Spago in Los Angeles, which helped him
become the nation's first celebrity chef. He also runs more than 80
Gourmet Express restaurants, many of which are in airports, and sells
frozen pizza, soups, kitchen cookware and cookbooks. Mr. Puck
estimated his companies' value at $360 million.

Since 2002, at least one animal-rights activist group has tried to
persuade Mr. Puck to stop using foie gras from ducks that are force
fed extra amounts of grain to fatten their livers and veal from
calves chained to small crates and fed a liquid diet to keep their
flesh white and tender.

The group, Farm Sanctuary, protested in front of Spago and started a
Web site called wolfgangpuckcruelty.org, which has since been taken
down. Mr. Puck dismissed those efforts and said he decided to make
the change as a result of a few trips to large-scale farms,
discussions with the Humane Society and a desire to mark his 25 years
in the business with something more significant than the kinds of big
parties he is used to holding for the Oscars.

"I have been telling people we have to stand for something for the
next 25 years," he said. "It's time for us to make a statement and a
time for us to see how we treat what we eat."

Mr. Puck said prices would increase only a few percentage points on
some items.

As many as 98 percent of eggs come from chickens kept in banks of
small cages to facilitate mass production, said Diane Storey, a
spokeswoman for United Egg, which represents most major egg
producers. She and Richard Lobb, a spokesman for the National Chicken
Council, which represents major producers of chickens for meat, said
their groups had science-based animal welfare certification programs
that used humane and ethical guidelines.

"We applaud the fact that he sells a whole lot of chickens," Mr. Lobb
said. "But we think our program is very progressive and he should
look at ours before he goes off with the Humane Society."

From The Humane Society of the United States:

Time to Give Animal Fighting the Knock-Out Punch

Early next week, the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate
are expected to vote on the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement
Act to crack down on illegal dogfighting, cockfighting, and hog-dog
fighting. We need your Representative and Senators to hear from you
today!

TAKE ACTION
Please take a moment to call your three federal legislators right
away. Let them know it's high time for Congress to pass this anti-
crime law and establish felony penalties for cruel animal fighting.

Arizona Senators
Senator Jon Kyl: (202) 224-4521
Senator John McCain: (202) 224-2235

You can find your federal Representative at:
https://community.hsus.org/humane/leg-lookup/search.html

Calling your federal legislators is easy. A staff person will take
your message and pass it along to your legislator. All you have to
say is:

"Hello, my name is [your name] and I am a constituent from [your
town]. I strongly support the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement
Act (H.R. 137/S. 261). I respectfully urge [legislator's name] to
support this critical piece of legislation and finally get it enacted
to fight back against the underground animal fighting industry. Thank
you."

We need everyone who cares about ending animal fighting to take
action, so please tell your friends and family how they can help.

The House bill has 304 cosponsors and the Senate bill has 36
cosponsors. Committees in both chambers have approved this
legislation, and versions of it have already passed over the years.
But it's not yet gotten over the finish line -- let's get the job
done now!

Thank you for your time and continued commitment to ending animal
fighting.

the cut in half lobster on the grill, and it starts moving around
like it's trying to get off the grill, moving its legs, tail, and

nerve reactions, it seemed to be moving around more than mildly
twitching."
