Subject: Huge news from Canada!
azvegan
Send Email Send Email

Just in from PETA:

Hello friends and animal rights colleagues. We announced big news for
chickens today. No, we didn't win our KFC Campaign, but we did win
a big part of it! After five and a half years of campaigning—and
seven long months of closed-door negotiations—KFC Canada (which
operates separately from KFC elsewhere) has agreed to make sweeping
animal welfare changes that are more comprehensive than any other
restaurant or grocery chain has ever made, thus ending our KFC campaign
in Canada. According to our agreement, which you can read more about in
the Canadian Press wire story that I pasted below, KFC Canada has
committed to the following:

     * Purchase 100 percent of its chickens, through a phase-in plan, from
suppliers that use controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK)—the least
cruel form of poultry slaughter ever developed. This will prevent
live-scalding, sadistic abuse by workers (since with CAK, workers never
even touch live birds), broken bones, painful electric shocks, live
throat slitting and other abuses. This is the first time any company has
committed to a total phase in of CAK. What's most remarkable is that
currently, only ONE chicken slaughterhouse in Canada uses CAK, so this
will require the industry as a whole to switch over the next few years.
     * Add a vegan fried "chicken" sandwich to the menu of about
65% of all the KFCs in Canada! (It'll be in stores around July, and
I hope all you Canadians will devour it.)
     * Improve its animal welfare audit criteria to reduce the number of
broken bones and other injuries suffered by birds and send PETA the
detailed results of all their audits every six months…from now until
the end of time.
     * Urge its suppliers to adopt better farming practices, including
improved lighting, lower stocking-density and ammonia levels, and a
phase-out of growth-promoting drugs and breeding practices that
painfully cripple chickens
     * Form an animal welfare advisory panel and allow PETA to have a say
in who is on it.

This is a big day for chickens and all farmed animals. To the many of
you who have helped with this campaign over the years: CONGRATS! We
hope now that KFC Canada has done what we've been demanding for so
long, that KFC's main parent company—YUM! Brands—will follow
suit. Fingers crossed.

`Kentucky Fried Cruelty' comes to an end
Vegan `chicken' on menu as KFC Canada pledges better animal welfare to
end protest
By Colin Perkel
THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO _ Following a five-year roasting by animal-rights activists, KFC
Canada is promising improved welfare for the chickens it buys for its
fast-food outlets in exchange for an end to a boycott campaign that will
continue in the U.S. and elsewhere.

The Canadian Press has learned that People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals has agreed to call off its Canadian ``Kentucky Fried Cruelty''
campaign, which featured high-profile actress Pamela Anderson among
others, following a signed agreement with the company.

Among other things, the deal obliges KFC Canada to begin buying from
suppliers who use gas to kill their chickens painlessly, considered to
be the least cruel method of slaughter.

The company is also promising to insist on other ``animal-welfare
friendly'' measures relating to how the birds are kept, including a
maximum on crowding and phasing out non-essential growth-hormones and
other drugs.

Customers of the popular restaurant chain will also be able to order a
vegan ``chicken'' item, according to the deal that followed almost seven
months of at-times ``sticky'' closed-door negotiations.

``It's going to drastically reduce the suffering of chickens in
slaughterhouses and also . . . improve the living conditions for animals
while they're on the farm,'' Matt Prescott, PETA's assistant director of
corporate affairs, said from Norfolk, Va.

KFC Canada President Steve Langford said he was delighted with the
agreement.

``It will be nice to put this behind us,'' Langford said. ``Our
preference is to have nothing negative attached to our brand.''

Langford said the Canadian operations, which are independent of those in
the U.S., had chosen to take the situation into its own hands and talk
to PETA about animal welfare.

``Once I got involved and we actually met face to face, we found out
that we had no differences of opinion about how animals should be
treated,'' Langford said.

``We landed in a very good place.''

PETA's campaign, which garnered international attention, has included
more than 12,000 protests at KFC restaurants and outside the homes of
company senior executives.

Demonstrators, who have included former ``Playboy'' pinup Lauren
Anderson, have burned effigies of company icon, Col. Sanders. Other
notables such as Paul McCartney, the Dalai Lama, and Chrissie Hynde have
participated in the campaign.

KFC Canada was also thrown on the defensive three years ago when PETA
released horrific video showing poultry workers torturing chickens in
the United States.

The company is owned by Priszm Income Fund, based in Vaughan, Ont.,
which operates 465 outlets across the country. The fund has been
struggling to stem a flow of red ink and shore up falling share values.

Most of the 300 independent franchisees have agreed to abide by the
agreement with PETA.

``It appears as though our campaign affected the bottom line to the
point where the company finally had enough,'' Prescott said.

``That said, I also believe that KFC in Canada is genuinely concerned
about animal welfare.''

While the anti-KFC campaign will now end in this country, PETA said it
would continue in the U.S., the U.K. and other countries. However, it is
hoping to persuade Yum Brands, which owns KFC outlets in the United
States, to follow the Canadian lead.

``With KFC Canada now doing exactly what we want KFC in the U.S. to do,
our members and activists will be even more energetic and invigorated
about going after KFC in other countries,'' Prescott said.

``All we want is for KFC worldwide to do what KFC Canada has done.''

Subject: Urgent action! Contact your State Senator now to support HB2485
azvegan

It was close, but HB 2485, the unlawful public sale of animals bill just
FAILED the third reading. Luckily, Senator Aboud is filing a motion to
reconsider. That means that we have one last chance! Please take a
minute to call your state Senator right now and ask him/her to support
H.B. 2485. It is important that Senators hear from their constituents.
(If you do not know who your state Senator is, there is a link at the
bottom of this email.) Please spread the word!

We need to get as much support as possible on this to keep the yes votes
and sway a couple of the no votes. This is our LAST chance for this
bill! Please make a quick, polite call to your state Senator and ask
them to vote yes on HB 2485, the unlawful public sale of animals bill.
Be sure to thank your Senator if he/she voted yes. If you have seen
people selling animals on the streets or in parking lots in your
district, please let your Senator know! Thank you so much for your
time.

Unlawful public sale of animals - Prohibits the sale of animals on a
public highway or private property without consent of the owner.
Bill Number: AZ H.B. 2485
HSUS Position: Support. For the animals sold on city streets, there are
no assurances that they have been properly cared for.
Bill Sponsor: Rep. Jerry Weirs (R, 12)

Bill details HB 2485:

     * Ban the public sale of an animal along any public highway or
street, or park or any public property adjacent to such a location.
(sidewalks) * Ban the public sale of an animal on commercial private
property without the consent of the property owner. (parking lots,
etc.) * The ban doesn't pertain to sales at pet stores or by a
charitable or nonprofit organization or any animal adoptions conducted
off-site by a pound, humane society or rescue organization. *
Although there is an amendment to limit this ban to the two largest
counties in the state, we still feel this is a big step in the right
direction.

Message from AZforANIMALS-

Friends,

One of the many ways to prevent animal cruelty is starting on a
political level. Stronger, stricter laws need to be passed to protect
animals and punish those who commit crimes against them.

With the upcoming election, I'm urging ALL VOTERS to start doing their
homework now. Recently, you should have received a booklet listing
all candidates that are running for state Senators and
Representatives. In this booklet you can locate your respective
District and find out who is running & vying for your vote.

Most of the candidates have websites and/or email addresses. Please
take a moment to craft a letter to your nominees and let them know
your concern for animal welfare, as well as feedback on where they
stand. I have included a SAMPLE letter that I sent to my candidates
and urge you to do the same. (Please revise/ reword before sending.)

Thank you & good luck!!!

Julie N.

Dear ______,

Thank you for your interest in running for State
(Senator/Representative) I'm a constituent in District __ and
starting to do my homework before casting my vote in the upcoming
election. I have the following question and would appreciate your
feedback to my concerns:

Where do you stand on issues pertaining to animal welfare and
protection of animals in our community & statewide? This is an
extremely important issue for me, as well as my family, friends, and
many co-workers. I have reviewed other candidates and will not vote
for those who have a track record of voting against issues to protect
animals.

I work in the tourism community but dedicate a lot of my time to
volunteering at the Maricopa County animal shelter, as well as
lobbying for stricter laws and initiatives to protect animals
(including Prop 204 in the last election - the Humane Farming initiative.)

I'd love to hear from you and know where you stand on my concerns for
animal welfare.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing
from you.

Message from Humane Voters of Arizona-

Need Help on Primary Election Day?

Do you need help on Tuesday to select candidates that support animal
protection? Humane Voters of Arizona (HVA) is an all volunteer,
non-partisan organization that supports candidates who care about
animals and animal protection. Electing those candidates is the most
crucial step in enacting animal protection laws. Because of their
charitable status with the IRS, other animal protection groups are
prohibited from endorsing candidates. HVA is the only statewide animal
protection organization permitted to participate in candidate campaigns.

The 2008 Legislative Report and Scorecards are posted on the new
Humane Voters website at www.HumaneVotersArizona.org . Also posted
are HVA endorsements for candidates in contested primary races, and
candidate questionnaires that we've received so far. Many thanks to
Sal Prano who designed the website and to Carrie Singer who designed
the HVA logo.

We hope to get more surveys back for the general election where most
of the races that HVA is tracking will be decided. If your candidates
do not appear on the 2008 Questionnaire page, it would be helpful if
you could contact them as a constituent and volunteer with Humane
Voters of Arizona and request that they return the completed
questionnaire.

We hope to hold a fundraising event this fall, and are in the early

Hi Everyone! We are working on this year's Farm Sanctuary events. See the
latest updates below!

Farm Sanctuary has been busy in 2008 with the Iowa flooding and the
many pigs, including new little piglets, that they brought into their
shelter. They have also been a part of other farm animal rescues in
addition to caring for their current animal residents and could really
use our financial support again this year.

We are excited for this year's events and are looking forward to
seeing everyone again. We have heard from others that will be
attending their first event and are looking forward to the new folks
joining us this year!

Once you've registered yourself for the Party and/or Walk, please
forward the information to friends, family, coworkers, strangers, and
anyone who may be interested in attending. We want to try and reach
as far as we can and make this year's event even bigger than last year. Please
add the event to your Facebook, MySpace, and other online calendars to let
others know about the event.

From Julie Nicolazzi-

Hello friends of Kari's...

We all know how hard Kari has worked in the animal rights community,
bringing
voices and justice for animals. Her relentless energy, determination, and
compassion makes her one of the most amazing people I have ever known.
  I'm
sure you would all echo my remarks and then some...:-)

Well, that's why I'm writing you today.

At this year's upcoming Farm Sanctuary Dinner, on October 10th, we are
going
to honor Kari for her dedication to helping animals. THIS IS A
SURPRISE!!!
KARI DOES NOT KNOW ABOUT IT AND WE'D LIKE TO KEEP IT THAT WAY, PLEASE. :-)

I'm working on compiling a "Dedication Book" full of friends & family
quotes
and photos of Kari. We will present this to her during the dinner.

If you would like to be included in the book, which I hope you will,
please
email me a quote, remark, or story about the impact Kari has had on your
life. Or, a story about how she helped an animal or animals. It can
be one
sentence, a paragraph, or a page. Whatever you prefer. (Just be sure to
attach your name.)

I need to receive your quote by this Friday, October 3rd. (My sincere
apologies for the short notice.)

Thank you all for your help!

AZVegan will be hosting Vegan Voices meetings on the first Saturday of each
month. The meetings will be held at 11:30am and will be at Green
Restaurant. http://www.greenvegetarian.com/location.htm

Vegan Voices is an opportunity to write letters on local and national
issues affecting animals.

AZVegan will provide a topic, background information, and contact info on the
issues. We will have a short discussion about the topic and then write letters
on the issues. Handwritten letters have been said to carry more weight than
emails or printed letters which can be mass produced. Handwritten letters show
that an issue is important enough to you that you're willing to sit down and
write a letter about it.

Bring stamps and your favorite pen! We'll provide the stationary, dictionary,
and the issues.

Humane Voters of Arizona Supporters and Volunteers,

Need information on local candidates or ballot measures? Check out the
new Humane Voters of Arizona Forum for information and discussion on
local candidates and ballot measures. If you have information on a
local issue, please post it to the forum.

Recent polling found that 51% of voters are opposed to Prop 105 and
only 27% support it. However, 22% of voters are undecided, which
means that now and through Election Day it is critical that we
continue to educate undecided voters about the pitfalls of Prop 105.
As you know Prop 105 would destroy Arizona's citizen initiative
process which is our best tool for protecting animals. Many of you
volunteered on grassroots measures that banned leg-hold traps and
poisons on our public lands, outlawed cockfighting, and banned the
cruel confinement of pregnant pigs and calves raised for veal. Had
Prop 105 been in place, none of these initiatives would have passed.

Please urge all your contacts in Arizona to Vote NO on Prop 105!

Message from Humane Voters of Arizona

Greetings Humane Voters Friends & Volunteers,

If you have not visited our website lately, please do. The general
election endorsements are up including recommendations for county
attorney candidates. Check them out, and see if candidates in your
district have responded to our questionnaire. If they haven't, please
contact them.

Special thanks go out to Lisa & Joe Hamilton. They set up an
information table for HVA at Green Restaurant in Tempe (thanks also to
Chef Damon Brasch who owns Green). Lisa says they talked to about 100
people! They let people know about HVA, reminded them to register to
vote and told them about Proposition 105, and asked them to vote NO to
protect initiative rights in Arizona.

Humane Voters of Arizona is a member of The Voters of Arizona, a
diverse coalition of groups opposing Prop 105, the so-called "Majority
Rules" initiative, a misleading amendment to the Arizona State
Constitution. It would require that nearly every initiative placed on
the ballot by citizens must receive the support of a majority of all
registered voters, not just those that cast a vote. That means under
Prop 105, "non-voters" would automatically be given a NO vote and
counted toward the final vote tally. As you know, Arizona's citizen
initiative process is our best tool for protecting animals. When the
state legislature refused to act, volunteers took animal protection
issues directly to the public. Voters passed laws that banned cruel
traps and poisons on our public lands, outlawed cockfighting, and
banned the cruel confinement of pregnant pigs and calves raised for
veal. Had Prop 105 been in place, none of these initiatives would
have passed.

Sponsors of Prop 105 include fast-food, alcohol, and tobacco
industries, which have raised millions of dollars to pass this
deceptive measure. The NO on Prop 105 campaign needs volunteers to
get our message out before the general election. If you can help
please let us know.

Can you help an animal-friendly candidate in your area? HVA-endorsed
candidates need volunteers to distribute campaign materials and staff
polling places on Election Day. Please consider volunteering for
candidates that support animal protection. Send us an email and we'll
direct you to a candidate that needs your help.

South Tucson Voters: VOTE YES ON PROP 401! Humane Voters of Arizona
urges a YES Vote on the Tucson Dog Protection Act (South Tucson city
initiative). Visit their website for more information on the
initiative and how you can help.

Please let your friends and family know about Humane Voters of
Arizona, and remind your contacts in California to vote YES on Prop 2,
which would ban the cruel confinement of pregnant pigs, veal calves,
and laying hens.

Great news on Prop 2 and Prop 105! Thank you to everyone who helped
pass these historic victories!!

Please visit www.hsus.org and www.farmsanctuary.org for more details.

Californians Pass Prop 2
Californians vote Yes on Prop 2California voters passed Proposition 2
by a resounding margin (62% to 38% as of this time). As a result, 20
million animals in California will soon be spared the worst abuses of
factory farms. And I'm confident that we'll look back at today as a
pivotal moment in how our nation treats animals who are raised for
food. Please read my blog over the coming days for my take on Prop 2
and what it means for animal protection.

Arizonans Vote NO on Prop 105
Vote No on Prop 105Voters soundly rejected Prop 105, the deceptively
titled "Majority Rules" initiative. If passed, this undemocratic
measure would have mandated that future ballot initiatives would need
more than just a majority of votes cast, but a majority of all
registered voters -- regardless of whether people show up to the polls
or not. This is a great win for Arizona's voters and ensures that
future efforts to pass reforms will be democratic and fair.

FUR FREE FRIDAY PROTEST!

What: Anti-Fur Demonstration on one of the Busiest Shopping Days of
the Year!

When: Friday, November 28, 2008
Time: 1 - 4 pm

Place: NE corner of Goldwater & Camelback
at Scottsdale Fashion Square
(directly across the street from Neiman Marcus)

Make plans to act for fur-bearing animals on November 28th!!

Fur Free Friday, the world’s largest and oldest anti-fur
demonstration, takes place the day after Thanksgiving every year. Join
activists throughout the world as we urge shoppers to never buy fur,
stores to stop selling fur, and media fashion writers to reveal the
truth behind fur.

While many companies have fulfilled their pledge to go fur-free, other
popular brands and retailers such as Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus &
Burberry continue to profit from animal suffering.

Make a commitment today to take action for the 50 million victims of
the fur industry. Imagine how powerful we could be if everyone reading
this would just take a few minutes to engage in one action for animals
killed for their fur.

     * We'll have signs and literature there, but feel free to bring
your own as well!
