Hello,

I am extending an invitation to any Arizona reenactor and their family and
friends who are interested in joining a Confederate Artillery Reenacting
Group to consider membership in the 18th South Carolina Light Siege
Artillery, Battery B, C.S.A.

The 18th South Carolina Light Siege Artillery, Battery B, C.S.A. Units
Mission Statement

The mission of the 18th South Carolina Light Siege Artillery, Battery “B”,
C.S.A. Reenacting Group is to safely and accurately portray a Confederate
artillery/mortar battery during the American Civil War. Our unit is a family
oriented, historically accurate, educational reenactment group based in the
Metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona area. A key part of our mission is education
of the public through school presentations, battle reenactments, and “Live
Fire” demonstrations. We work diligently to perfect our impressions of the
trials and tribulations of 19th century military camp living, and work with
all other Civil War reenactment groups to successfully portray our era of
interest as true living historians

Benefits of joining the 18th South Carolina Light Siege Artillery, Battery
“B”, C.S.A. Reenacting Group:

• No annual dues
• Actively Participate as a Living Historian
• Relaxing with friends who share a common bond and affection for Civil War
reenacting, artillery, weapons, and black powder fun
• No unit politics we are all equals, lets just be safe and respectful
within the reenacting community
• Experience reenactors or new comers to the hobby are welcome
• Unit participates in “Live Fire” events as well as reenacting events
• Participate as much or as little as your budget or private time allows

This is a great way to educate the public on your southern heritage and
pride.

Here are some Misc. Videos taken by one of the two camera crews we had
out at Spring Mountain Ranch 2006. It predominately focuses on the
Confederate Infantry and both sides Artillery. However pay close and
you can get some nice peeks at all of the mounted Cav that graced our

Subject: Knott's Berry Farm Encampment

My fellow reenactors,

The Knott’s Berry Farm Encampment on February 17-18 is coming along quite well!

Remember, each adult reenactor will be given two adult tickets to be used anytime in 2007. Although tickets are cheaper in the off-season, the value of each ticket for use in the summer, the “high season”  is $41.95. Therefore, a husband and wife can take home approximately $170.00 in tickets for later use.

You will be required to fully participate both days. You can register when you arrive on Friday and on Saturday morning before 10:00. Tickets will be distributed shortly before 3:00 on Sunday. Breakdown of camps can commence at that time.

We need reenactors who can pose for a “photo op” on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. If you can participate, let me know ASAP!

You can arrive anytime after noon on Friday. You will be required to register when you arrive.

The firing of muskets, pistols and cannons will be permitted.

Sutlers, your participation seems all but a “done deal.” There will be certain arrangements that will need to be made and I will be sending you a message tomorrow concerning how to contact the appropriate person at Knott’s.

At our meeting with the Fire Marshal today, we were told that fires must be roped off from the public. We have asked Knott’s to help provide ropes and stakes, but if you simply leave a gap in a row of tents and tie a rope to two tents’ upright poles, you will take care of any problem. Each fire must have a bucket of water nearby, so come prepared.

Attached is a parking pass. (Ignore the map in the same document.) To avoid parking fees, place this pass in your vehicle’s window the entire weekend. A good map and directions are also attached, courtesy of Don Parra and Brent Klaiber of the Howitzers.

Vehicles must be out of camp by 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning because park guests begin arriving at 9:00 a.m. You can carry in camp necessities after that, however.

You may not give anyone even a sample of hardtack. The sharing of food with any member of the public is not permitted.

Sorry, no dogs will be permitted at this event.

Many unit commanders have provided me with space requirements and estimated attendance figures. I ask that each commander do this again by next Tuesday so as to firm up the head count. If you did not report to me through your unit commander in the past, simple email me directly again.

Special thanks is due to Don Parra of the Howitzers for his excellent efforts in making this event happen!

Because I do not wish to bother everyone on my reenactor email list concerning this matter as we get closer, only those who respond to me by email concerning their attendance at this event will be receiving further updates. In case of rain or even threatening weather, I will need to be able to contact you and advise you of the status.

Please pass on this message to your own reenactor email list!

I just wanted to remind everyone of the Photos from Picacho Pass 2006
my wife took last year. I just added a couple more to go with them.
They are posted under the "photo" tab of this group once you login to
the main page. If you have other photos from last year what a great
place this is to post and share them! I also put them on the New Mexico
Yahoo Group with some of their event photos.

Of course the weather was worse than it will be in a week and a half
from today... but maybe it will be some inspiration for some of y'all.
Will cya all in a week and a half!

Perhaps he feels like a lot of us do, that information about
historical events are not always listed here. The more information,
means more participation at events.

Ave Omnes,
I'm just writing this quick note to let everyone here know that there will
be a workshop meeting of Legion Six at my home in Surprise on this
Saturday, the 10th.
If you're interested or curious about reenacting Roman Legionaries or
other 2nd century impressions, come on by between 10 and 3 and we'll
introduce you to what we do. For a headstart, check out our website at
www.legionsix.org.

Glen,
Still not sure I follow the logic. If the problem is that people
aren't posting enough in one Yahoo group I don't see how dividing the
efforts to get information out between it and another Yahoo group will
improve things.

Nonetheless, I wish the best of luck with the efforts. Maybe the
newness will get people interested again.

I only made it to Picacho for the day since I am heading out to Louisiana For Red River III this week. Got there a little late Friday night with My nine year old Nephew Mikol. We marched in from the car, dropped packs, and spread out our blankets near the 1st New Mexico. We watched the Union forces drill, watched the first battle (the first time I've just been a spectator despite having been attending whenever I was in state since the early 1990s) . We visited with folks a little, marched out and headed home so I could get Mikol home and finish packing before dark.

We got a few photos while there and have placed them online at http://www.azreenacting.net/scrapbooks/2007/picacho/index.htm.

I'll be offline while at Red River but I'll try to check email along the way there and back and will get any other updates done as soon as possible on my return.

Ha! I thought you were not there Troy. Go figure you shaved and I
grew a little fuzz. Have fun out at Red River!

Anyhow...

As always our Las Vegas group (9th US Infantry/www.snlha.org) had a
great time. I actually had the time for a chance to check out Spencer
& Jackson's awesome show. Since we ended up with 50 percent less
people than expected a week out, Captain Jolley was kind enough to
let us fall in with him. It worked out really well as Don and Roger's
group is not only regular army, but also about the same style my
folks are use to. Working as the Skirmish group was a plesant change
of pace since we are always part of the Main Body in Southern CA, or
have to strictly keep the close order appearance in local Living
History.

I also got to run with Sgt. Brubakers (sorry for butchering the
spelling!!!) Dismounted Cav. They are plesantly aggressive and we had
a nice time together, although I missed leading my own men on the
field. I had the pleasure of getting to know a few of them last year
up in Las Vegas, NV at the Spring Mountain Ranch event. It is not
often I get to wipe out my command 3 out of 4 times in a weekend!
Albeit the smoke from the "wagons" got us the fourth time when we
pressed the wagons/pyrotechnics. Ok, so they smoked us out with real
smoke and repeled us... I usually never get to empty a full cylinder,
much less clean them both out in one battle. So that was fun. I even
got a few shots off at my Las Vegas Confederates and the jovial Tom
Atkins from the ACWS. Of course Tom ended up being the death of my on
Sunday morning! The Sgt has a great comand that is always enjoyable
to hang out with, and an enthusiastic new guidon bearer.

Which reminds me... We appreciate the mixed unit that Arizona
supplied to our first year in Las Vegas last year. Most of my folks
were able to put faces to units and realised that the entire AZ Union
Army sent at least a couple of their folks from each unit. It made me
happy that they could see that for themselves! You (AZ) significantly
helped attribute to the 330 Reenactors, and provided at least 25
percent of the outnumbered Union Infantry. We will continue the
practice of the early battle on Sunday followed by the musket raffle.
This year I look foward to giving more of a rest in the middle of the
battle to give the Medical Corps more of a show (and the Infantry a
breather!!!). Please make sure to read the ACWS Gold Book available
at www.acws.net or www.snlha.org as we PROVIDE YOU FREE Travel and
Participatin Insurance in our costs (if you pre-registar). Just
another benifit of attending this Invitational! Bouties should be
similar to last year as well.

We look foward to your presence again this year in Las Vegas, and
hopefully even the honorable... yet "snake loving"... Captain
Shoemaker can join us from Albuquerque. It was really a cute snake
Don :> A moment in Reenacting I am sure not to forget... "Shoemaker
v. the Snake".

Due to conflicting planning we will not be able to make it to
Glorietta as a Unit (1st weekend in May). We will be encouraging our
individuals to go, and fall in with one of the US Regular units. In
las Vegas, we are still "new" in that aspect even though we have been
doing Reenacting locally for over a decade. The transition from
strictly Living History to Reenacting as well causes us to struggle
for numbers out of town. Additionally the added challenge due to our
extreames in range of age. Parental support can be a real hamper, and
25 percent of the SNLHA is provided by Venture Crew 1855 (Boy Scouts
14 to 21 male or female). We are anticipating some support for the
Flagstaff Tactical as well, even though we do not typically attend
non-public events due to time constraints..

Which segways me to Picacho Pass 2008...

Yes, we will be back! We want to continue to support our fellow
Reenactors, and the Historic Battlefield. Again due to Parental
constraints, we will only be able to participate on Saturday next
year. At best we can fall in for the first battle on Sunday depending
if we were able to get packed before 9am, but will be unable to do
more than that. We tried this year, but due to complications in the
afternoon, left substantially later than planned. This meant that I
delivered 4 sets of teenagers back to their parents at 11:45pm on a
school night.

Well, I made it home safely. All I can say  about the event right now is WOW! By far one of the absolute best reenacting experiences I've had in my 15 years in the hobby.

I've started a page for photos, After Action Reports, and links at http://www.manifest-history.org/BGR-RRIII/index.htm. I'll be adding more as I gather them.

My favorite photo so far is of me kneeling to take a shot.  http://inlinethumb36.webshots.com/2787/2309853680063463652S600x600Q85.jpg

Don,
I believe Jonathan is referring to Stephen Chernin's new Arizona reenacting mailing list he started because he apparently thought this one that has been active since 2003 was too free or something. His list apparently promises "to develop and move in a forward direction, reenacting in Arizona" through censorship and suppressing of dissenting views from the mainstream.

Don, Chad Lares of The Museum of Military History has just started looking into putting on the event, he has just recieved a reply from Schnepf Farms about the rates and is looking at ways for the Museum to raise the funds to put the event on. If he finds a way he likes to come up with the funding the event will be sometime late-winter or early spring of 2008. I have already volunteered to help with planning site layout and getting the site setup, so when the plans are firmed up and ready to announce I will get the word out as widely as I can.

Don,

This message is a bit out of context. A David Chernin started some
list and emailed everyone including myself and other WWII reenactors
about his "new list" that would be the nirvana of all reenacting
information lists. So I posted an announcement that Chad Lares of
the Museum of Military History was planning an event. It is a
timeline of the soldier that would reach back as far as Ancient
Rome.

The event is in the pre-planning stages and so I wanted to let all
who are interested in helping out know so they could get involved.

I explained that Chad is a reenactor and he understands the value of
the reenactor to these events, and so Chad will not charge
reenactors to attend the event. Chad will even provide powder and
ammo to those demonstrations that use it. Chad will provide meals
for the reenactors.

Lastly the Museum is a registered Non-Profit Organization and so any
contributions that your or your group makes are tax deductible.

When i posted this information Chernin, called it "Mudslinging" and
refused to post it. When I asked how providing information was
mudslinging, he called it "innuendo". When I asked "Innuendo against
who exactly" he blew up.

If describing how an event promoter is going to treat reenactors
like a valued asset, and provide for them is "Mudslinging and
innuendo" against someone else, I have to wonder about the character
of that someone else would is threatened by the compliment directed
at another.

If any of you would like to help the Museum of Military History
build this event from the ground up, please contact Chad Lares at

chadlares@...

Or visit the Museum's website at

To ALL,

In an attempt to stray away from negativity I will let everyone know of the basic plan for this event. Our philosophy is that reenactors will be provided meals, blanks/ black powder in return for them donating their time and exhibits for a timeline event to be hosted at Schnepf Farms. This event is a timeline event with the theme "A Walk Through Military History". There are costs ( of course ) associated for such an event and we are in the early stages of development/ fund raising to see if our idea is feasible. This event is not intended to conflict with the similar "American Heritage Event" held in November, in fact, we are hosting ours several months apart so as not to conflict. There will be exhibits from ancient Roman to present day ( we don't expect to get every single period in between but we will try ). We will have Civil War and WWII demo battles with our tanks, halftracks and armored cars, etc... in addition, there are plans to bring the newly acquired MI-24 Hind D attack helicopter ( scheduled to arrive in early June this year ) as well as an added draw. Our costs for operating/ transporting such vehicles/ aircraft is very expensive so I want everyone to know up front that this is not written in stone until those funds are raised to cover these expenses. The projected time frame is March 2008. I hope that everyone can proceed with their unique interests in military history with a common goal and maybe some day just get along. If you have any questions and/ or would like to help, my number is 480-208-6926.

Sincerely,
Chad Lares

Troy,

The pictures were great.  I went to Red River II and had a great time.  Wish I could have gone this time.

Troy,
I sure wish I could have made it to Banks Grand Retreat. Sounds like
it was a really great event for authentic reenactors who wanted to
experience the life of a Civil War soldier.

I know we have disagreed in the past but now maybe you'll understand
why I say that Arizona events just don't make the cut. Too many
little fish trying to be big fish in a little puddle of a reenacting
community. Too much politics, farby and inauthentic events, and
reenacors who really have no clue about actually experiencing real
history seem to be the order of the day in Arizona. Picacho, Pioneer
Village, or American Heritage will never even come close to an event
like Banks Grand Retreat.
