Motel Soldier
To the tune of Southern Soldier

I put my knapsack on my back,
My rifle on my shoulder.
And drive away to the Holiday Inn,
Before it gets much colder.
Befor It gets much colder.
I'll drive away to the Holiday Inn,
Befor it gets much colder

I bid fare well to my wife and child,
Farewell to my aged mother.
I'll be safe and sound at the Super 8,
Before the battle's over.
Before the battle's over.
I'll be safe and sound at the Super 8,
Befor the battle's over.

If I should sleep on the battlefield,
My pard might hog the covers.
I'll go and sleep in a king size bed,
And phone my dear old mother.
And phone my dear old mother.
I'll go and sleep in a king sized bed,
And phone my dear old mother.

If one of my pards should get lost,
We'll find him I assure you.
We'll meet up at the Motel 6,
They'll leave the light on for you.
They'll leave the light on for you.
We'll meet up at the Motel 6,
They'll leave the light on for you.

Befor I rest my weary head,
Where Jack Frost cannot harm me,
I'll place my wakeup call for 6,
So I can Join the army.
SO I can join the army.
I'll place my wakeup call for 6,
So I can join the army.

You can surround my motel room,
And tell me I am cornered.
I won't check out intill I get
The room service I ordered.
The room service I ordered.
I won't check out intill I get
The room service I ordered.

Back at Ya!  Here is an ode to the dismounted cavalry out there…

Alkin’ a Raid

(To the Tune of Ridin’ a Raid)

Oh their socks are worn through and there’s sores on their feet

Those holes in their brogans don’t quite look so neat

But that is the price they must pay, I’m afraid

‘Cause the ain’t got a horse and they’re walkin’ their raid

Come dress all your blisters and darn all your socks

Empty your brogans of pebbles and rocks

Warn your commanders you might be delayed

‘Cause it takes a long time when you’re walkin’ your raid!

Ladies and Gentlemen,
There are some interesting and unfounded rumors spreading about this
years event. one individual has threatened a discrimination lawsuit,
against the State, Park, two Park Managers myself and two others. Let
me assure all that there is no problems with the event. The individual
has no basis for his claims and is acting like a spoiled child, who
will not allow both side of the story, matter of fact he removed me
from the other Arizona Re enacting Yahoo group after editing my posts.
ACtually that is a non issue with me, but the threat of attending the
event strictly to cause problems with myself and others is. We all need
to work together to make this hobby, lifestyle, sport or whatever one
wishes to call it, enjoyable to all. Afterall it is we who actually

Glenn,

Hello!

We are going to have a blast this year at Picacho. The weather
forecast looks great for the weekend. Now all you need is a few
buddies, muskets, cavalry, artillery, with a touch of black powder
smoke in the air and it doesn't get much better.

I will be on the federal gun line with the 3rd US. I will have my
Mountain Howitzer and Prairie Limber.

I have ordered a bronze MH barrel but I don't think she will arrive
in time for Picacho. The barrel I order was molded from a cast of the
West Point Military Academy Museum Bronze 12 Pdr. Mordecai 1849
Mountain Howitzer barrel. This MH actually saw action in the Battle
of Greenbrier River, VA (Now WV) on October 3, 1861 with the 1st W.
Va. Light Artillery regiment. So when I get the MH barrel it will
actually be molded from a Civil War barrel that was in action during
the Civil War.

I look forward to a great weekend of fun and friendship.

What is this all about? is this about the unit not being able to field
their siege mortar or the dance troupe not able to depict virginians
in the southwest?

I think anything that can be done to make picacho less of a joke is a
good thing.

On another note, I request we have a moment of silence at Picacho in memory of the recent passing of the daughter of Cmndr Bridwell in Georgia.   Sad tragedy.

Sheeesh, Savannah Seige artillery at the battles of Valverde,
Glorietta, and Picacho. If the historical record is discrimination,
perhaps someone should point out the additional dangers that exist
from the greater blast radius of a short barrel mortar pointing nearly
vertical.

Oh well, I'm not attending the event to live history but to spend time
with some of my friends and perhaps undue some of the "educating of
the public" by reenactors like this.

Howdy Troy,
Yup, he is the same one. He said that if I had
bought a quality tent made by Panther Primatives it
would not have been shredded, good grief!
I always have a good time at Picacho, yes,
even when my tent and all its contents was trashed.
This year Im bringing my 4 teenage nephews and I am
looking looking forward to having a great time. I know
its not a authentic event by any stretch of the
imagination, nor does it claim to be, but like I said
Ive always had a great time there , I see folks that I
only get to see once in a while. It was also the first
event that I ever attended so I will always have a
soft spot in my heart for it.
We never know how much longer we will have Picacho
to go to, what with the rail road wanting to have
their switching yard near by.One day it might be gone
for good, you never know.I am going jump at the chance
to enjoy it while we have it.
Im looking forward to seeing you Troy,I havent
seen you in a long time. Possibly at the Vegas event
two years ago.I'll see you there.
                  Sincerely,

I've been pondering the whole Savannah Siege Artillery thing since last
night, so let me see if I have it straight:

After last year's event, the decision (by who I don't know) was made that
units attending should at least pretend to have a Southwestern impression.

Mr. Chernin was offended that the event did not want him there AS the
Savannah Siege Artillery (they did not appear to have any problem with his
unit being present, just wanting him to call it something else.)

He was also upset that they were not going to allow his little Coehorn
mortar since it looked nothing like the artillery that was used in the
Southwest (and there may have been some safety concerns about using a little
mortar like that in amongst Infantry, but I don't know for sure). I'm not
even going to go in to how hard it would be to use a period mortar
effectively in a battle where neither side had fixed positions and were
generally maneuvering on a basically open field.

Falling back on his experience from having organized a union for classified
staff for the Sunnyside School District (as opposed to the Teachers Union
group that already existed), he then cried that he was being "discriminated"
against, and threatened to sue the State, the Park, the Rangers involved,
and several of the volunteers who have been involved in organizing the
event. He also contacted public officials and told them about this
"discrimination" and his threatened lawsuit.

Hmmm... Hey Bob, does that mean that 30 AU can go next year? We can just
scream that we are being discriminated against when they won't allow us to
bring the grenade launchers, the machineguns, the anti-tank rocket launcher,
the Jeeps, Etc. I mean we do use rifled Enfields (OK, so they are fed from
a 10 round magazine, it's not THAT big of a deal is it?) for our main
infantry weapon, isn't that close enough? Or we could get some of the
Airborne re-enactors to show up, since at least they portray an actual
American unit.

Greetings!

I just want to take a minute and thank the many different reenactors
that came out to Picacho Peak CW event this past weekend.

Andrew Garcia and Bob Smith did an excellent job as the commanders.
From my view from the Mountain Howitzer the units maneuvered nicely
and in tight disciplined formations. Ron Fox and Don Jolley scrimmage
lines did an excellent job flanking, attacking, and protecting the
gun line. The battle scenarios like any tactical encounter require
good field commanders changing unit positions as the battle
unfolds.

The union artillery worked nicely together. Walt Nichols is still in
the process of recovering from his illness but he still took the
field on every battle and coordinated the federal artillery fire.
With help from newly promoted Lt. Michael Vander Maten the federal
gun line ran smoothly and orders from the artillery commanders were
obeyed without delay. Troop B artillery unit was a lot of fun to work
with. They were easy going and professional, I felt we did a good
impression of the 3rd US Artillery with one Parrot Rifle and three
Mountain Howitzers. With the three minute firing rule in place
between shots we are still working out strategy to coordinate
constant artillery fire at events without down time during the
battle.

John Rogers brought several of his nephews to help run powder and be
part of the artillery team. With Kailee Vander Maten and Shea Dilly,
John's crews did a great job and were eager to learn. I hope we
inspired the next generation of artillery reenactors. As the
artillery units get more familiar with each other in AZ we will only
get better with more drill and time on the field together.

Mr. Anderson and his wife drove down from southern Oregon with their
12 pdr. Whitworth Breech Loading Rifle to work on the Confederate gun
line. Hopefully, everyone got a chance to talk with them about their
unique artillery piece.

Everyone I talked with was having a good time and enjoying
themselves. I wish I had more time visiting with my fellow reenactors
but several of the artillery crews were busy showing and explaining
the different artillery pieces to several of AZ Boy Scout Troops. The
crowd seemed larger then years past and I noticed reeanctors in camp
talking and explaining their uniforms and equipment to the public.
Hopefully, we inspired several people to get interested in the hobby.

I hope that this event can be the turning point which allows the AZ
CW community to work closely with each other to help grow the hobby
and most of all enjoy each others company.

Respectfully,
Mark Bond

Dear Mr. Bond,  I read with great pleasure your letter of March 12th, detailing the annual reenactment at Picacho.  It made my own inability to attend all the more poignant.  I read with particular interest your comments regarding the reenactors who educated the public between battles, when they could have been resting and rehydrating.  Bravo, the troops!

Indeed Mark, the event ran extremely smooth even with the spoiled
child starting more than he colud chew. There were approximately five
thousand spectaters, with around two hundred and thirty re enactors.
Every comment I received from bothe re enactors, and spectaters was
nothing but praise for the soldiers and civilians alike. The event
went very well.

Do you know how they market and advertise the event? To be honest
it's about 80% word of mouth. The event is a State Park sponsered
event, no reenactment sponsors or is in charge. The state carries
everything, water, showers, firewood, and no charge to those that re
enact. Yes we have a few idiots that make life rough for the rest,
but they are weeded out. Otherwise the event always runs well. And
for the record it was over five thousand spectaters (I know I
misspelled). Please come to the next Picacho Civil War in the
Southwest, the second weekend of March, 2009.

Thanks to all the Federal reenactots, infantry, artillery and cavalry who made this event so much a success!  It is great to see that the park is encouraging a greater level of authenticity for this event.  I hope we can all strive to make Picacho a quality renacting event in our neck of the woods.  We have a rare opportunity to reenact on an actual historic site, and to reenact in a way that is in many ways unique from the standard reenactments done back east or on the west coast.  I have been getting great feedback from the Federal groups, most in a positive tone, and several with great suggestions to make this event even better.  I would also like to thank the Confederat coordinator, Bob Smith, for all his hard work making this event a great time.

I would also like to add my thanks to all the Confederate reenactors who took part in the event at Picacho.  I have heard nothing but great praise for how the Infantry Battalion and the Artillery both handled themselves.  Everyone looked the part of Texas troops of that time period.  I can only say that I was proud to have been your Commander at the event.  You all made history come alive for those two days.

And thank you, Andrew, for your great job as well.

Hello all

My girlfriend and I came to the reenactment at Picacho Peak this year
and we enjoyed ourselves very much. I'd like to say thank you to all
the re-enactors for helping bring history to life.

Part of the reason for our attending the event was to photograph the
re-enactors and then process our digital images in such a way so they
would look like they were made using the wet-collodion process.

I've posted four of them to my blog at:

and will be posting more over the next few days.

I'd be interested in any comments you may have. I'd also be interested
in hearing from anyone living in or near Tucson who may be interested
in making some more formal portraits in this manner.

I also failed to get the name of the period photographer that was

appreciate if you'd pass that along to me.

Thanks

Richard Kowalski
