I am a new candidate for the 2005-06 school year. I would love to hear
any advice you have on AYA-SSH certification. I am having trouble
getting started, especially on Entries 1 & 4.

I don't feel like I have enough Documented Accomplishments. So I would
really appreciate any ideas on things I could start doing now that I
can write about later.

Thanks, Michelle

Hi Michelle,

I'm sorry I didn't get your email for so long.
First of all, congrats on working towards your Nat. Cert.  You will not regret it.
I do know that it is hard at times getting started.  Entry 1 and 4 can be a little hard to brainstorm on, but once you get going it becomes easier.
Here are some ideas:

General Ideas- Save everything, just pile it up in a box to sort through as you go.  If it is a student work sample, just make copies of a couple of students work.  If you feel that a work sample shows a flaw in your teaching, still keep it.  It will give you material to later discuss.

Entry 1- Teaching Reasoning Through Writing
This entry was really challenging for me.  I knew that it would be, so I tried to be very organized about it.  I selected 4 students to collect work samples from.  I kept them in their own folders.  I tried to collect a variety of samples.  For example, I collected a couple of essays, an extended response answer or two, and several journal entries.  I included in my documents the rubrics that I was using to grade them, the copy of the assignment instructions.  The more documents that I had to work with, the easier it became.  Then, when it came down to evaluating my teaching reasoning through writing, I went back to the guidlines from the Nat. Bd. directions.  This review helped me with the vocabulary necessary for the writing.  I didn't see a direction in my writing until the very end.  I noticed that my teaching through reasoning was OK...but definately needed work.  And to write about your weaknesses is fine, just come up with some ways to improve while you are at it.

Entry 4-Documented Accomplishments
This is one of the entries that you may not see all the great things that you are doing right away, but once you get rolling you will see how the smallest things that you do in your room contribute to your students' learning.  In any case, I would again suggest saving...save every newsletter that you send home, any positive notes that go home, any invitations to conference, any document (written/picture) that shows you involved in your students, parents, community.  I kept a journal (on the computer) of each contact that I made with parents, community members, and positive student contacts.  After about a month of entering in each contact, I noticed a pattern.  I started to gather the documents to support my findings.  These documents were copies of emails, good notes, pictures, newsletters...anything.  I asked colleagues and parents to help me with documentation as well.

I think my best advice is...to gather data about yourself and your teaching, give yourself time to reflect and find the patterns, and the writing will become easier as you go.

Please let me know if you want me to read anything for you.  I would be happy to help.  I am mentoring a person right now in special education, but my certification is in social studies/history.

Good luck!
Leah LaCrosse

** CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Congress in the Classroom 2006 **

DEADLINE: March 30, 2006

Congress in the Classroom is a national, award-winning education
program now in its 14th year. Sponsored by The Dirksen Congressional
Center, the workshop is dedicated to the exchange of ideas and
information on teaching about Congress.

Congress in the Classroom is designed for high school or middle
school teachers who teach U.S. history, government, civics, political
science, or social studies. Forty teachers from throughout the
country will be selected in 2006 to take part in the program.

You will gain experience with The Center's educational Web site,
CongressLink (www.congresslink.org), which features online access to
lesson plans, student activities, historical materials, related Web
sites, and subject matter experts.

Throughout the program you will work with national experts as well as
colleagues from across the nation. This combination of firsthand
knowledge and peer-to-peer interaction will give you new ideas,
materials, and a professionally enriching experience.

In sum, the workshop consists of two types of sessions: those that
focus on recent research and scholarship about Congress (and don't
always have an immediate application in the classroom) and those
geared to specific ways to teach students about Congress.

The 2006 program will feature a broad overview of Congress with
special attention to the mid-year elections of 2006. Tentative
session titles are listed below. Additional sessions will be
announced as presenters are confirmed. More information about the
content of each session will be posted on our Web site as it becomes
available shortly after February 15.

*A View from Capitol Hill -- The Honorable Ray LaHood, (R-IL, 18th
District, U.S. House of Representatives)

* Congressional Insight: An Interactive Simulation of a Member's
First Term in the House of Representatives -- National Association of
Manufacturers

* We Already Know the Winners: The Demise of Congressional General
Elections -- Harvey Tucker, Texas A&M University

* How Legislators' Experiences as Candidates Affect Their Behavior as
Policymakers in Congress -- Tracy Sulkin, University of Illinois

* Ten Things Your Students Should Know about Congress -- Frank
Mackaman, The Dirksen Congressional Center

Vance, AdVanced Communications

* The Dirksen Center Web Suite as a Resource for Teachers -- Cindy
Koeppel, The Dirksen Congressional Center

* View from the Other End of the Avenue: The Legislative Presidency --
Jeffrey Weinberg, Office of Management and Budget

* What We Can Expect from the 2006 Congressional Elections -- Lauren
Whittington, Roll Call

Other Program Highlights:

In addition to the hour-long sessions above, The Center will offer
what we call Sound Bites, or 15-minute sessions, on campaign
commercials, campaign literature, a film clip of Senator Dirksen
explaining the nature of congressional leadership, a new Web feature
dealing with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, among other possibilities.

The workshop will take place from Monday, July 31 through Thursday,
August 3, 2006, at the Radisson Hotel in Peoria, Illinois. Teachers
who are selected for the program will be responsible for (1) a
non-refundable $135 registration fee (required to confirm acceptance
after notice of selection) and (2) transportation to and from Peoria,
Illinois. Many school districts will pay all or a portion of these
costs.

The Center pays for three nights lodging at the headquarters hotel
(providing a single room for each participant), workshop materials,
local transportation, all but three meals, and presenter honoraria
and expenses.

Those teachers who are not selected for the program will have an
opportunity to register for the Web-based Congress in the Classroom
workshop -- http://www.congressclass.org.

The deadline for applications is March 30, 2006. Enrollment is
competitive and limited to forty. Selection will be determined by The
Center. Individuals will be notified of their acceptance status by
April 15, 2006.

Hello.
I passed my boards two years ago.
In preparing for the tests, I borrowed several history, econ, govt, and social studies books from grades 6 on through high school.  And I read, read, and read some more.  I jotted down notes, made sample time lines, and tried to hit each of the strands while reading.

I did use the internet for some of the areas, but I don't know of any sites off the top of my head.

Try to...
Relax when you are taking your test.
and...
Give yourself a minute to gather your ideas before you start typing.
Good luck...you've come this far, you can do it.

5 of the tests I took had nothing to do with what I teach-7th grade geography so I did not do well on the history parts because I have not had history since college.  I did well on the economics because I do so much economics in my classroom and winged my way through 3 others-I really don't know how. This time I am taking two and I am just digging through the net to find info on the subjects.  I tried the history book route but there are so many books and so much info I found it overwhelming.  I did get the history for dummies book and read it. wish me luck!!!

I took them in November. They were ok. I read over a US History and World
History text. I have taught everything under the sun so I was ok - knock on
wood. A good overview place to brush up on your US and World could be
regentsprep.org.

It is a good website for NY social studies courses - it should help you refresh.

Good luck

Hi there
Most of us would like to have a degree. Some of us even have the complete
information about different Universities and colleges but they still find it
hard to make a decision to enroll. The problem is they are not sure about what
to look for and what are their criteria about online degree.

The criterion could be anything but most importantly cost, accreditation,
reputation of the University/ College, how many students are enrolled, how many

Hi there
When you are applying for a job online, you need to remember that your CV would
have around 30 seconds to get the attention of the recruiter. If your CV fails
to get noticed within 30 seconds, the details will be overlooked doesn't matter
how good they are, and you will not be called for an interview or for more
details.

If they like what they see at the first glance they will give it time and might
also get back to you for more details. Because it is an online CV you do not
need regular formatting as you do in a regular CV and also you have to keep it
in the simplest format possible i.e. plain text. So for online jobs the best way
to do it is to write your CV in a notepad or word pad so you would know for sure
the format the other people would see.

In an online CV you need to add different keywords from the start to the end.
This is because when you add your CV to a job search engine, recruiters normally
type in keywords to choose the candidate. Also try to list your major skills in
the beginning of the CV so it would get noticed. Simple words like excellent,
experienced, fast, skilled etc give extra spices to even boring CV so use them
wisely.

Hi there

There are so many certification exams but one thing is common between them; when
preparing for them they all require 90% inspiration and 10% perspiration.

But unfortunately majority of student do the complete opposite and therefore
they find themselves struggling to cope with the course. A simple plan can bring
all the difference in the world. If you take step-by-step approach you will
definitely be able to cover the whole course. Not only that, but also your
confidence level with get higher every day and at the end you will get the
result you are looking for.

Most students find difficult to make a plan for the course. They have more
notes, books, cds, questions from the online tuition providers etc than the
library but still they just sit there and go through looking at them without any
plan. Hours after hours, day by day they do the same thing without any effective
study. They figure that these are not enough so they even try to get more, chase
friends and tutors, email group members of different communities to send them
more. They like collecting notes but those notes cannot help them; they only
make them more desperate.

That is why I said a simple plan could bring all the difference in the world. I
can tell you from experience because your confidence level changes from one day
to another. You might find that you can finish half a book and numerous
questions in one day but on some days a couple of pages and a simple question
can give you a big headache. A simple plan for tomorrow that’s all you need for
effective study.

Planning.

What are you going to do tomorrow? How much are you going to cover tomorrow? How
many hours you are likely to give tomorrow. Start a new copy and write it down,
select the books, notes etc, in some cases you might only have the questions and
answers from the tuition providers. So write down how many questions you want to
try tomorrow. Remove the ones you don’t need tomorrow from the table and from
your list and put them out of sight.

Once you have the plan for tomorrow then you need to give sometime to think it
over. It takes around 30 minutes or less to go over the plan. How many things
you need to learn by heart, underline the paragraphs, answers, solutions etc.
How many questions you want to try tomorrow, how many pages, articles etc you
want to read, write it down.

The whole point is that your plan for tomorrow must have an objective, what is
it you want to achieve tomorrow? Be realistic, don’t try to be a hero, it
doesn’t work. Once you try this, you will find that you can cover much more in
two hours of effective study than you can do in a week.

A word of warning, planning is quite frustrating in start but I can assure you
that in one week it would become a second nature to you. So either you are
studying or thinking about taking admission you need an effective plan.

Hi there,
If you want to improve or change your career but don’t know where to start, then
may be its time for you to spend some time thinking about yourself. Become
better acquainted with yourself; look at your CV and think what needs changing
in there, are you fully aware of your skills, interests and what motivates you.

Every job requires a new CV not just a new covering letter. If a job suits you
and can bring positive changes in your whole life then you should be prepared to
give few minutes preparing a new CV for each and every job.

Certain skills such as working independently; planning time effectively; working
under pressure and to deadlines; reading, analyzing and solving problems;
adapting to different circumstances are all required in most jobs among other
things. You will probably have more relevant skills and experience to draw on
then you give yourself credit for.

Presentation is the key and if you can manage to do that in your CV in a
positive way that an employer will value then you have more chances of getting a
job then anyone else.
