Sorry for the unannounced hiatus folks ... the move is now complete and
life is returning to some semblance of normal ... we now resume our regular
broadbandcasting (or whatever)...

Sunday, November 5
5.00 p.m. DISCU Ancient Puzzles
One I've consistently missed: "New research leads to startling theories
about ancient secret codes, puzzles, and the evermysterious Egyptian pyramids."

Monday, November 6
10.00 p.m. HISTU Vikings: Fury from the North
Despite the title, the focus of this program is largely on the 'civilized'
side of the Vikings

Wednesday, November 8
4.30 p.m. DISCC Ghost Ship of Pisa
A look at the discovery of some 15 Roman ships which sank ca. 2000 years ago.

9.00 p.m. PBS Napoleon: To Destiny and Mastering Luck
A major series on the life an times of the little general; two episodes per
night, it seems with the first two being devoted to N.'s rise from
obscurity on Corsica to his rise to be emperor of France. (as always with
PBS, check local listings to verify local showtimes)

9.00 p.m. DISCU The Mummies
Mummification in various cultures and "learn the science behind
decomposition" (mmmm ...)

10.00 p.m. DISCU Mummies: Into the Afterlife
Oft repeated look at what mummies can tell us about modern disease.

Thursday, November 9
9.00 p.m. DISCC Ancient Inventions: Sex and Love
A look at sex and love in the ancient world; narrted by by Terry Jones.

10.00 p.m. TLC The Lost Ark
Squirrel fodder about ancient astronauts coming to earth and teaching the
Egyptians to make a big capacitor.

Saturday, November 11
1.00 p.m. DISCU Mummies: Into the Afterlife
Repeat of Wednesday's program

2.00 p.m. DISCU The Mummies
Repeat of Wednesday's program.

Monday, November 13
8.00 p.m. HISTU History of Prostitution
Prostitution throughout the ages in various cultures ...

8.00 p.m. DISCU Riddle of the Desert Mummies
Caucasian mummies in the Chinese desert ...

9.00 p.m. DISCU Tomb of the Warrior Prince
This one looks interesting: excavation of a tomb on Mount Altai which was
not looted and preserves relics from the 4th century .C. Saka culture.

Tuesday, November 14
9.00 p.m. HISTC Ancient History Tuesdays
Two hours of programming about the ancient world (I believe this week has
an hour on the Celts and one on Cromwell)
Wednesday, November 15

7.00 a.m. A&E Classroom: Leonardo Da Vinci
Excellent overview of the guy who puts the 'renaissance' in 'renaissance man'.

9.00 p.m. PBS Napoleon: The Summit of Greatness and The End
N's attempted conquest, and eventual failure to conquer Europe.

Friday, November 17
7.00 a.m. A&E Classroom: Michelangelo

Saturday, November 18
5.00 p.m. DISCU Tomb of the Warrior Prince
Repeat of Monday's program

Sunday,November 19
8.00 p.m.TLC Chariots of the Gods: The Mysteries Continue
TLC is, alas, getting a lot of mileage out of this one ...

8.00 p.m. DISCC Ultimate Guide to Mummies
Mummification by various processes (I *think* this might be the same
program on DISCU on Nov. 8)

9.00 p.m. DISCC Desert Mummies of Peru
A look at an unlooted burial from a Chirabaya site in Peru.

9.00 p.m. HISTC Ancient History Tuesdays
Two hours of ancient programs.

Monday, November 20
7.00 a.m. A&E Classroom: Longitude part 1
When this was on last month I declined to include it in the listings
because I wasn't sure what it would be like. As it turned out, however,
it's an excellent 3 part series on the big problem of the 18th century: how
to accurately measure longitude it's a lot more interesting than it sounds
initially (honest!)

9.00 p.m. DISCU In Search of Blackbeard's Treasure
A somewhat dated look at the search for the Queen Anne's Revenge.

10.00 p.m. DISCC In Search of Blackbeard's Treasure
See above ...

Tuesday, November 21
7.00 a.m. A&E Classroom: Longitude
The series continues ...

8.00 p.m. HISTU Lost City of Atlantis
This is the one (I believe) which handles the whole thing responsibly ...

9.00 p.m. HISTC Ancient History Tuesdays
Hopefully there will be two hours of appropriate programming here.

Wednesday, November 22
7.00 a.m. A&E Classroom: Longitude
The series concludes ...

8.00 p.m. HISTU Sodom and Gomorrah
A relic from A&E's "Mysteries of the Bible" series

9.00 p.m. DISCU Mummies: The Real Story
Mummification throughout the ages ... including today (some pretty gross
scenes in this one)

10.00 p.m. DISCU Egypt Uncovered: Age of Gold
Oft repeated program examining the suggestion that pharaohs systematically
plundered the tombs of their predecessors to supply themselves with burial
stuff.

Thursday, November 23
8.00 p.m. HISTU The Cavemen
This one seems to be rather old and possibly outdated (it's been around
since these listings first started) ... Neanderthals and all that.

8.00 TLC Atlantis Uncovered
Winner of the hyperbolic statement of the month: "If Atlantis really
existed, the whole of human history would be rewritten."

9.00 p.m. TLC In Pursuit of the Shroud
Oftrepeated program dealing with using technology to establish the Shroud
of Turin's authenticity.

Repeat of Monday's program

8.00 p.m. A&E Biography: Howard Carter
The guy who discovered Tut's tomb gets the Biography
treatment ...

Sunday, November 26
9.30 a.m. DISCU Mystery of the Neanderthals
So ... what happened to them?

Tuesday, November 28
8.00 p.m. HISTU True Story of Braveheart
William Wallace and all that ...

9.00 p.m. HISTC Ancient History Tuesdays
Insert standard hopeful description here ...

Highlights: an amazingly sloooooow month ... you know it's slow when
highlights include two shows (one new, one old) on Atlantis (TLC) ...
Ancient Autopsies (TLC) ... Nefertiti (TLC) ...

Tuesday, September 5
5.00 p.m. DISCC Beyond 2000: Ottoman Archives
A look at a collection of some six centuries of Turkish history which is in
danger of deterioration but is apparently going to be saved with modern
technology.

9.00 p.m. HISTC Ancient History Tuesdays
Two hours of ancient programming

Wednesday, September 6
10.00 p.m. HISTU Engineering Disasters
This look at various engineering mistakes includes (it claims) a look at
Hammurabi's code and the Colossus of Rhodes.

Sunday, September 10
12.00 p.m. HISTU Body Snatchers
This one looks interesting: grave robbing for various purposes, from
Egyptian mummies to the need of cadavers for medical research in the 18th
century ...

10.00 p.m. TLC The Search For Atlantis
This is a new, two-hour thing which looks at various places which might be
Atlantis (essentially it appears to be a rehash of every other program on
Atlantis, but narrated by Ted Danson).

Tuesday, September 12
9.00 p.m. TLC In Pursuit of the Shroud
Oft-repeated look at what technology reveals about the Shroud of Turin.

9.00 p.m. HISTC Ancient History Tuesdays
Two hours' worth ... hopefully

10.00 p.m. TLC Nefertiti: Egypt's Mysterious Queen
"Follow archaeologist Nicholas Reeves on his search for Nefertiti's tomb,
the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century" (hmmmm...)

Sunday, September 17
6.00 a.m. A&E New Explorers: Search for Inca Gold
A decent program wherein all sorts of technology is used to try and locate
a huge amount of gold which supposedly is hidden in the mountains of Ecuador.

Tuesday, September 19
9.00 p.m. HISTC Ancient History Tuesdays
Two hours of TBA ancient history programming ...

9.00 p.m. TLC Curse of Tutankhamen
This might be new, but the subject isn't, of course.

10.00 p.m. TLC Ancient Autopsies
Another one which appears to be new, but again with a oft-repeated subject:
examining mummies for info about modern diseases.

Friday, September 22
9.00 p.m. TLC Atlantis: The Lost Continent
Oft-repeated and I suspect the source for some of the computer-imagery for
the Ted Danson-narrated thing earlier this month.

10.00 p.m. TLC Lost Ships: White Gold
A somewhat vague description suggests this is about the illicit antiquities
trade (with a focus on south east Asia)

Sunday, September 24
9.00 p.m. TLC Chariots of the Gods - The Mysteries Continue
Erich von Daniken proves he can still get air time ...

Tuesday, September 26
9.00 p.m. HISTC Ancient History Tuesdays
Two hours of ancient programming

Highlights: Great Empire (HISTU) ... Greatest Pharaohs (A&E) ... Ancient
Inventions: War and Conflict (DISCC) ... Puzzles of the Past (DISCC)

7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

Thursday, August 3
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

10.00 p.m. DISCU Ancient Puzzles
One I have yet to see on "ancient secret codes, puzzles, and the
ever-mysterious Egyptian pyramids".

Friday, August 4
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

9.30 p.m. DISCU Islands of Mystery
This one looks interesting: "Visit a remote Pacific island where ruined
stone palaces sprawl across a hundred man-made islands, and a
5,000-year-old catacomb on Malta which contains thousands of bodies and
evidence of worship to an obese fertility goddess."

Saturday, August 5
12.30 p.m. DISCU Islands of Mystery
Repeat of Friday's program

2.00 p.m. DISCU Ancient Puzzles
Repeat of Thursday's program

Sunday, August 6
8.00 p.m. TLC The Lost Ark
Another one I've missed (but not much): "Ancient astronauts journeyed to
earth and taught the Egyptians to make a capacitor capable of storing
electricity ... (etc.)"
Monday, August 7

7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

10.00 p.m. DISCC Puzzles of the Past: Secret Codes
Deciphering of various scripts (Egyptian, Mayan, Indus), as well as the
more 'usual' stuff about secret codes.

Tuesday, August 8
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

9.00 p.m. HISTC Ancient History Tuesdays
Just so folks know, there won't be ancient programming in this time slot
(argh!) due to a couple of programs commemorating Hiroshima.

Wednesday, August 9
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

9.00 p.m. DISCU Pyramids: Resurrection Machines
A look at how the pyramids fit into the Egyptian belief system.

10.00 p.m. DISCU Mummies: Into the After Life
Oft-repeated (it seems) program on how ancient mummies are helping fight
modern diseases.

Thursday, August 10
9.00 p.m. TLC Forgotten Secrets
Probable squirrel fodder here: "Ancient civilizations appear to be linked
by astonishing similarities in their understanding of the heavens. Evidence
points beyond coincidence to the existence of an earlier civilization that
spread their knowledge world-wide".

10.00 p.m. TLC Aztecs: Inside the Hidden Empire
A general overview of Aztec culture, with reference (of course) to their
"bizarre sacrificial practices".

Friday, August 11
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

11.00 p.m. HISTU Lost City of Atlantis
I'm not sure if this is a new one or is simply one of the old ones
repackaged for a new series called "Incredible but True?"

Saturday, August 12
3.00 p.m. DISCU Pyramids: Resurrection Machines
Repeat of Wednesday's program

6.00 p.m. TLC Chariots of the Gods - The Mysteries Continue
The real mystery is why people still pay for this sort of thing: "Author
Erich Von Daniken challenges science with his theories."

Sunday, August 13
7.00 p.m. DISCU Mysteries of the Pyramids
Repeat of the program from August 8 ...

Monday, August 14
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

Two hours of TBA ancient history programming ...

7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

Thursday, August 17
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)
Repeat of Sunday's programme.

Friday, August 18
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

Saturday, August 19
7.00 p.m. DISCC Underwater Secrets
A portion of this program is devoted to the search for the Queen Anne's
Revenge (and is possibly out of date now).

7.00 p.m. PBS The Dead Sea
This is one episode from an impressive series on PBS devoted to "the most
stunning natural features on earth". The official blurb promises that this
installment includes "the geology, archaeology and history of the Dead Sea
region." [as always with PBS, check local listings]

Sunday, August 20
7.00 p.m. HISTU This Week in History
Among the topics discussed in this weekly program (which will hopefully
appear on a channel I can watch) is the destruction of Pompeii and Vesuvius.

9.00 p.m. PBS Out of India
Another one that looks like it has potential: the program follows William
Dalrymple on a couple of tours of India. The first is a pilgrim route to
the source of the Ganges; in the second, he follows a manuscript which
details St. Thomas' trip from Palestine to India to see whether it is fact
or fiction. [check local listings]

Monday, August 21
6.00 a.m. HISTU The Great Empire: The Republic
Decent series hosted by Joe Mantegna on the rise and fall of Rome; the
first episode covers a lot of territory -- from Romulus to the
establishment of an imperial form of government.

7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

8.00 p.m. DISCU Mysteries of the Pyramids
This is a really good program on the pyramids, and includes footage of
several that usually don't make it to television.

9.00 p.m. DISCU Riddle of the Desert Mummies
Oft-repeated program about Caucasion mummies found in China.

10.00 p.m. DISCU Age of Gold
I'm still waiting to see this one: it suggests that tombs of pharaohs were
systematically looted to provide gold for the burials of later pharaohs.

Tuesday, August 22
6.00 a.m. HISTU The Great Empire: Age of Emperors
The series continues with a look at the Julio-Claudians

7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

8.00 p.m. HISTU Shroud of Turin
I'm not sure which program this one is; it postdates the carbon dating but
seems to be much prior to the exhibition of the shroud a few years ago.

9.00 p.m. HISTU Mummies: Tales ..
See description for Tuesday, August 11

9.00 p.m. HISTC Ancient History Tuesdays
Two hours of TBA ancient history programming

The multicultural Roman Empire ...

7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

Thursday, August 24
6.00 a.m. HISTU Great Empire: The Enduring Legacy
The title says it all ...

7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

9.00 p.m. DISCC Ancient Inventions: War and Conflict
Assorted ancient military innovations, hosted by Terry Jones of Monty
Python fame.

9.00 p.m. DISCU Atlantis Found?
This one might be new ... (but probably isn't, really)

Friday, August 25
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

9.00 p.m. TLC Seeking Noah's Flood
Exploring the theory that various flood legends in the Near East are tied
to an event associated with the Black Sea ...

10.00 p.m. TLC Mazes and Labyrinths
A look at mazes and puzzles throughout the ages (the pyramids are mentioned
in the official description, but curiously the palace of Knossos isn't ...)

Saturday, August 26
6.00 p.m. DISCU Riddle of the Desert Mummies
Repeat of Monday's program.

Monday, August 28
7.00 a.m. A&E Greatest Pharaohs
The first episode looks generally at some of the big monuments of ancient
Egypt as well as Tut's tomb. [n.b. I suspect the entire series is being
shown this week in the Classroom time slot, but the info I have ends on the
28th for reasons unknown]

An okay month in terms of quality ...

Highlights: Vikings (PBS) ... Ice Mummies (PBS) ... In the Footsteps of
Alexander the Great (HISTC ... maybe) ... Pyramid of Doom (TLC) ...
Cleopatra's Palace (DISCC) ... assorted Egyptian stuff (HISTU) ... etc.

Sunday, June 4
12.00 p.m. A&E Ancient Mysteries The Lost Ark
Oft-repeated look at the search for what Indiana Jones was looking for.

Monday, June 5
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology
The series continues ...

9.00 p.m. DISCU In Search of Blackbeard's Treasure
The discovery of what appears to be the Queen Anne's Revenge ...

10.00 p.m. DISCC The Viking Saga
This one looks interesting: it examines the Vikings' eastward trade routes
into Russia and Constantinople.

Tuesday, June 6
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

8.00 p.m. PBS Nova: The Vikings
A two hour special on "a people who were much more than ax-wielding
pirates". As with all PBS programmes, check local listings on this one (on
some stations, it might be on on June 13 at 6.00 p.m.)

9.00 p.m. HISTC Ancient History Tuesdays
Two hours of non-specified programming about the ancient world (I believe
the first is Henry Louis Gates' series "Into Africa" on various ancient
kingdoms of Africa; the second is the second or third episode of Michael
Wood's "In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great")

Wednesday, June 7
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)
Thursday, June 8

7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

8.00 p.m. DISCU Mysteries of the Pyramids
This one looks potentially nutty ... outside of the spelling 'pyrmids' in
the official description, one finds the following 'complete' sentence:
"What it is that draws people to the pyramids."

Friday, June 9
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

6.00 p.m. DISCU In Search of Blackbeard's Treasure
Repeat of Monday's program ...

Monday, June 10
11.00 a.m. TLC Great Books The Odyssey

including this decent little look at Homer's Odyssey.

Monday, June 12
6.00 a.m. HISTU Ramses the Great
Classroom is running a bunch of Egyptian stuff this week; this one's a
decent look at Ramses.

7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

10.00 p.m. DISCC Egypt's City of the Dead
Decent look at various catacombs which lie under the city of Alexandria.

Tuesday, June 13
6.00 a.m. HISTU Egypt's Great Queen
Oft-repeated look at Hatshepsut.

7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

9.00 p.m. HISTC TBA
There should be some ancient programming in this time slot (two hours'
worth, again, Gates and Wood)

Wednesday, June 14
6.00 a.m. HISTU The Sphinx of Egypt
Somewhat oft-repeated program which tries to figure out whose face is on
the Sphinx (this one is actually good to show to schoolkids)

7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

Thursday, June 15
6.00 a.m. HISTU Mysteries of King Tut
A look at various mysteries dealing with Tut, including the cause of his
death and the omnipresent 'curse' ...

10.00 p.m. TLC Pyramid of Doom
This one looks interesting (I think I missed it if it was ever on before):
"Excavations at an ancient pyramid in Peru reveal some 70 skeletons
grotesquely splayed across a mud plaza in positions of sudden, violent
death ..."

Friday, June 16
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

Sunday, June 18
7.00 p.m. DISCU Mysteries of the Pyramids
Repeat of the program from June 8 ...

9.00 p.m. PBS NOVA Ice Mummies
NOVA is running this three hour special on various frozen dead folks from
the Andes, Siberia, and the Alps (as with all PBS programs, check local
listings)

Monday, June 19
9.00 a.m. DISCU The Republic
DISCU also appears to be picking up bits and pieces of the Great Books
series from TLC ... two episodes in one here; one on Siggy Freud's
*Interpretation of Dreams*, the other on Plato's *Republic*, with a
reenactment of the Allegory of the Cave

7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

10.00 p.m. DISCC Cleopatra's Palace
The story of Cleo and the discovery of her palace beneath the sea ... (a
good one!)

Tuesday, June 20
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

8.00 p.m. A&E Biography: Mary Magdalene
Revisionism about what the real Magdalene was like ..

8.00 p.m. HISTU Strange Disappearance of the Anasazi
Trying to figure out why the Anasazi disappeared (and you know someone out
there is thinking "Maybe it was someone they ate" ... sorry ... couldn't
resist).

9.00 p.m. HISTC TBA
There should be some ancient programming in this time slot (two hours)

Wednesday, June 21
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)
Thursday, June 22

7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)
Repeat of Sunday's programme.

Friday, June 23
7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

8.00 p.m. TLC Mysterious Treasures
This looks like a somewhat 'mercenary' series, each episode looking at
'treasures' of some sort. Included in this episode are 'ancient treasure
troves', including tombs in Egypt and Iraq ... of course, curses are
mentioned ...

9.00 p.m. TLC Sacred Treasures
More treasures, including the Ark of the Covenant and the Shroud of Turin.

10.00 p.m. TLC Royal Treasures
Nothing specifically ancient mentioned here, but just in case you want the
complete set ...

Sunday, June 25
6.00 p.m. PBS NOVA Ice Mummies
Another potential showing of the three hour PBS special ...

10.00 p.m. TLC Atlantis: The Lost Continent
This is the one with all the computer graphics to dramatize "life as it may
have existed" ...

Monday, June 26
10.00 p.m. DISCU Mysterious Man of the Shroud
Somewhat dated look at the Shroud of Turin

Wednesday, June 28
9.00 p.m. PBS NOVA Voyage of Doom
This one has potential: the search for La Salle's lost last ship (say that
ten times really fast)

A couple of items of interest that have cropped up in the last couple of days:

Tuesday, May 23

1.00 p.m. TVO More to Life

Folks in Ontario will be able to call in and talk to one of Canada's
leading authorities on matters gladiatorial and amphitheatral (Jonathan
Edmondson of York University) ... I have somewhat conflicting times on this
one; JE himself tells me 1.15, TV Guide 1.00.

8.00 p.m. FOX Opening of the Tombs

Bill Pullman (the guy from Casper the Friendly Ghost) hosts this program
(along with the omnipresent Zahi Hawass) which will open one of the tombs
from the Barhariyah Oasis 'live'. On Entertainment Tonight on Friday they
did a preview and it looks pretty good ...

Greetings,

My box is rapidly filling because of an overactive delete/formatting finger
that I am afflicted with (comes from being on too many email lists!). In
any event, the programming for April 12 and 13 is squashed together and
should read:

  >Wednesday, April 12
  >7.00 a.m. A&E Classroom Rise of Christianity: I
  >A four part series looking at the first thousand years or so of
  >Christianity, beginning fifty days after Jesus' death. This episode looks
  >mostly at the ministry of Paul.
  >
  >7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

  >Thursday, April 13
  >7.00 a.m. A&E Classroom Rise of Christianity II
  >Christianity from 312 A.D. to 461 ...
  >
  >7.00 p.m. HISTC Archaeology (TBA)

Sorry for the confusion

[apologies for crossposting ... you wouldn't believe how many lists I feel
morally-bound to send this to]

Greetings,
This morning I finally connected long enough to my ISP to update my virus
definitions for Norton antivirus and I was greatly dismayed to discover
that I had been infected with the W32.Plage.Worm. I have no idea when I was
infected with same, but the virus apparently first appeared in January of
2000 (which coincides with a time I was having -- and continue to have --
problems connecting with my ISP, including in regards to such things as
scheduled tasks like Live Update for Norton Antivirus). It isn't really a
harmful thing, as far as viruses/worms go, but it is one of those things
one can pass along without even knowing it -- it supposedly sends a message
to any unanswered message it finds in your email program. If you have
received a message like the following from me (or anyone else, for that
matter):

P2000 Mail auto-reply:
' I'll try to reply as soon as possible.
Take a look to the attachment and send me your opinion! '
  > Get your FREE P2000 Mail now! <

... you should do a virus scan. There is an attachment that comes with the
message as a supposed .zip file which can have various names (mine was
news_doc.zip but apparently the name is randomly selected from a list). If
you haven't received such a message, there should be no need to worry.
As for what the virus does, if you're on your computer between midnight and
2 a.m. on a Wednesday, you'll be given a rather disturbing image on your
screen of Hitler with a gun in his mouth and an appeal to stop the "plage"
(sic) affecting the world.

More info on the virus (including info on the various file names of the
attachment containing it) at:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.plage.worm.html
or
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/p2000.htm

I sincerely hope I haven't passed this along to you, but if I have, my
sincerest apologies.

regards,
dm

The TV listings will be delayed this month (not too long!) ... tonight's
the first night in a week that my ISP has maintained a connection for
longer than 5 minutes; I've got plenty of catching up to do!

Highlights: The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization (PBS) ... Secrets of Lost
Empires (PBS and HISTC) ... Wonders of the African World (PBS) ... Tribes
and Civilizations/Egypt Uncovered (DISCC) ... etc.

Editor's note: beginning this month, I am including links to program/series
websites at the end of each issue ...

All times Eastern:

Saturday, February 5
1.00 p.m. A&E Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
A 2-hour look at the seven wonders, who built them, and
why.

5.00 p.m. PBS Wonders of the African World Swahili Coast

This first episode in a decent series on ancient Africa
narrated by Henry Louis Gates Jr. looks at the history of
the coastal regions of Kenya, Tanzania, and the island of
Zanzibar. (as with all PBS listings, check your local
schedule to confirm times)

8.00 p.m. PBS NOVA Medieval Siege
This is the first episode in a special series by NOVA
subtitled "Secrets of Lost Empires". This one looks at
medieval military technology -- specifically the trebuchet
-- and involves a bunch of folks actually rebuilding and
using the thing.(check out the program website at the end
of these listings)

Tuesday, February 8
8.00 p.m. PBS NOVA Pharoah's Obelisk
The series continues with an interesting attempt to design
an apparatus to raise a 40-ton obelisk into position.

9.00 p.m. HISTC Secrets of LostEmpires This Old Pyramid

This is the same as the NOVA series (I believe) slightly
askew ... this one attempts to build a small pyramid using
ancient techniques.

Wednesday, February 9
8.00 p.m. PBS The Greeks Birth of Democracy

A new, three-part series which had Paul Carledge as its
chief consultant looks at ancient Greece from the 6th to
4th centuries or so. The first episode (I believe) is entitled
"Birth of Democracy" -- I'd definitely check local listings
on this one; because of the long official title (The Greeks:
Crucible of Civilization), the title of individual episodes is
not immediately obvious. (also check out the link to the
program website at the end of the listings)

Thursday, February 10

8.00 p.m. PBS Wonders of theAfrican World The Slave Kingdoms
The series continues with a look at Ghana and Benin

that tombs were systematically plundered to provide later
pharoahs with sufficient gold for their own journey ...

Saturday, February 12

5.00 p.m. PBS Wonders of the African World The Slave Kingdoms
Repeat of Thursday's program.

8.00 p.m. PBS NOVA Pharoah's Obelisk
Repeat of Tuesday's program

9.00 p.m. PBS The Greeks ... The Golden Age
I believe this is the episode which will be on, obviously
looking at Pericles and Athens' 'empire'

Sunday, February 13
12.00 p.m. A&E Ancient Mysteries Queen Pharoah
Hatshepsut ... again.

Tuesday, February 15

9.00 p.m. PBS NOVA Mystery of the First Americans
A look at Kennewick Man and various other remains
recently in the news which have caused some rethinking
on the populating of the Americas.

9.00 p.m. HISTC Secrets of Lost Empires Obelisk
A look at obelisks and various suggestions on how to
raise them -- possibly the same program as was on
NOVA last week, but the vague description isn't helpful.

Thursday, February 17

8.00 p.m. PBS Wonders of the African World The Holy Land
The series continues with a look at Ethiopia, including
Axum.

Friday, February 18
10.00 p.m. DISCC Tribes and Civilizations Deities and Demons

Egypt.

I'm not sure that I've seen this one; the official description suggests it
will be a good look at the town, including a vist to 'Thermopolium
Strreet', Poppaea's villa, and various houses and shops of the less rich
and less famous.

10.00 p.m. HISTC History Bites David: The Big Sex Scandal
Sorry ... I have a weakness for this series, which presents variosu
historical events as 'channel surfing'; it's very effective with students,
although educators should screen the content first for
appropriateness.

Wednesday, January 5
7.00 a.m. A&E Classroom The Greatest Pharaohs
A trio of Pharaohs: Akhenaten, Nefertiti, and Seti I

Thursday, January 6

destruction than creation ....

A look at the extensive archaeological evidence for a Viking
'Empire'

A modern dance interpretaion of Purcell's opera.

12.00 p.m. A&E Ancient Mysteries UFOs: The First Encounters
I know ... I know ... but this one purports to include "a look at monuments
of antiquity that point toward stars in the sky, and ancient texts that
contain references to flying objects."
Monday, January 11
10.00 p.m. DISCC Discover Magazine Human Sacrifice
A look at the evidence for human sacrifice in various ancient cultures

The various building projects of the other Ramses ...

9.00 p.m. DISCU Riddle of the Desert Mummies
DNA analysis on mummies from China ...

10.00 a.m. DISCU Age of Gold
An interesting suggestion: tombs of pharaohs were systematically plundered
to finance the burials of future kings.

Wednesday, January 19
7.00 a.m. A&E Classroom Foot Soldier: the Medieval Soldier
Just a small portion of this series hosted by Richard Karn is being shown;
it tends to have cheesy reproductions of battles that eventually are good
for a laugh.

9.00 p.m. DISCU Science Frontiers Mummies: Frozen in Time
Assorted ways folks have tried to avoid bodily decay, both while living and
dead. There is a segment on mummifications.

Somewhat dated look at the city buried by Vesuvius.

Monday, January 24
9.00 p.m. HISTU Mummies: Tales from the Egyptian Crypts
First of a four part series looking at various Egyptian burial sites and
customs. The first episode looks at the pyramids and the mummification
process.

Tuesday, January 25
9.00 p.m. HISTU Mummies: Tales from the Egyptian Crypts
The Sphinx as intermediary between living and dead ...

9.00 p.m. TLC Mysterious Man of the Shroud
A somewhat out of date look at the Shroud of Turn ...

Wednesday, January 26
8.00 p.m. HISTU Lost City of Atlantis
This is the good one, if I recall correctly, which actually looks at the
evidence

9.00 p.m. HISTU Mummies: Tales from the Egyptian Crypts
A look at hieroglyphics ...

Judea, all with a sort of unifying theme of multiculturalism.

6.00 p.m. HISTC History Presents Life and Times of Jesus
Part I of the search for the evidence for the 'real' Jesus ... this one
looks at the first Christmas and presumably will deal with birth narratives

***** Missed Program Alert ******

In last week's listings I neglected to mention that DISCU will be showing
'Riddle of the Desert Mummies' tonight at 9.00 p.m. (just before the other
program on mummified types); apologies all around and in case you miss it,
it's on next weekend too! (Thanks to Susan Goodrich for the heads up!)

First of a decent series looking at assorted emperors

]|[ Tuesday, October 12

Little Nero made a boat, and sent his mommy out not to float ... when he
saw what he had done, he set fire to a chunk of Rome (or something like that)

9.00 p.m. HISTC Millennium
A look at the eleventh century, especially in southeast Asia but a visit to
Islamic Spain is also included

10.00 p.m. HISTC Millennium
The twelfth century is the 'century of the axe', apparently as evidenced by
Chaco Canyon, France (Gothic architecture). Lalibela (Ethiopia), and the
Australian Aborigines.

]|[ Wednesday, October 13
7.00 a.m. A&E Classroom Hadrian
Yo ... Hadrian ... HADRIAN!

]|[ Thursday, October 14
7.00 a.m. A&E Classroom Constantine

I'm not quite sure why this is considered a trio, but I'm sure Peter
Ustinov will tell us ...

9.30 p.m. DISCU Discover Magazine Hidden Temples
How satellite technology has helped to reveal plenty of temples in the
remote bits of Cambodia.

]|[ Saturday, October 16
5.00 p.m. HISTC Millennium
Repeat of Tuesday's program on southeast Asia etc.

6.00 p.m. HISTC Millennium
Repeat of Tuesday's program on Chaco Canyon etc.

]|[ Sunday, October 17
5.00 p.m. DISCU Riddle of the Desert Mummies
Repeat of last Sunday's program on the apparently caucasian mummies from
China.

6.00 p.m. DISCU Mummified! Mummies: The Real Story
Repeat of last Sunday's program on mummification in various cultures at
variosu times.

8.00 p.m. TLC Mysterious Man of the Shroud
I think this might be a new program on the Shroud of Turn, which looks at
the various tests which haven't answered the questions tv types want answered.

++ Next installment on or about October 17, 1999++
