Subject: natural building work parties - woop woop
Hey,
You are all folks I thought would be interested in doing this type of a
workshop. Let me know if you want to go and maybe a carpool can be
arranged from ATL for August 1st and 2nd.
We can go up there Friday afternoon and come back Sunday or some
scenario like that. Forward on and just reply to me soon...I will let
Wade know if we will have an ATL carfull of helpers....
All the best,
cc
Greetings from the Ecovillage Training Center,
This email is a shout out to all the people that have expressed a desire
to get in on some of the natural building action here at the ETC. We
have been working on a number of big projects here at the ecovillage and
elsewhere over the last few months. With the momentum building, we have
a few jobs where a high energy work party would be the big ticket.
The major element we will be working with is natural plasters. They are
easy to learn, fun, messy, a great skill to have, and we have plenty of
surface area to spread some highly refined mud on. There will also be
plenty of other techniques to learn, such as cob, straw bale, light clay
straw waddle and daub, and others.
Here's where the fun begins:
The games kick off at the Ingram's timber frame straw bale home in New
Market, AL. On July 18th, we will be hosting a plastering work party,
showcasing strawbale plastering techniques. This experience will be
facilitated by expert natural plasterer Katey Culver, along with her
husband/architect Howard Switzer. You'll learn earthen and lime
plasters, cob, light clay straw, and, if you're lucky, a few fresh
revolutionary folk songs. All this is happening in a beautiful set of
rolling hills near the northern Alabama border, with camping and top
notch facilities. Bring your tent, your boots, and your best hawk and
trowel, for a hands-on instructional plastering event.
The second big event is going to be held at the Ecovillage Training
Center in Summertown, TN, on August 1st and 2nd. The relevance of the
place itself is enough reason to visit, but on this particular weekend
we will be taking out all the stops to make a massive effort to put some
finishing touches on the Green Dragon, which is one of the most
recognized natural buildings east of the Mississippi R. The building is
a page out of the annals of hippy architecture. We aim to give it
enough acute attention to turn it into a highly functional space, like
maybe a hobbit pub. The work will consist of cob stomping and drum
beating, earthen plasters and earthen floors, and potentially even
breaking in a new counter top or two. The ecovillage will play host to
many locals and out-of-towners for the weekend in hopes of putting some
of the vast ocean of enthusiasm for natural building to play rendering
the green dragon into renewed beauty and functionality. For all of the
incoming work party participants, we can waive the cost of camping and
provide a rocking good time. You will need to either bring your own
food or purchase a meal plan from us and our top notch ecovillage
kitchen.
Space is limited, so RSVP by replying to this email as soon as possible,
and so that we can get you more information about the event you're
interested in and have a good idea of how many folks to be prepared for.
May the forest be with you,
Wade Austin
