Even though this looks like a very hard task, I decided to try LOTW.
Almost immediately, I am stuck.

I got through the Generate Certificate Request. But, when I tried to
upload it, it is nowhere to be found (the .tq5 file). But, when I run
the TQ5 Certificates program again, it shows one in the window.

Is this a Windows Vista problem, or is LOTW that hard to get started?

I would suggest you simply do a "Find" or a "Search" or whatever it is
called in Windows Vista for "*.tq5" and that will show you the location of
the file. When you open the Search routine, just type in "star"-dot-tq5"
(without the hypens) and initiate the search. ("star" is the asterisk over
the number "8" and it is a wildcard saying "find any file that ends in .tq5)

I have heard that Windows Vista sometimes puts files in the places it wants
them to be placed, not in the places you want them. But, since I don't
have Vista, I can't speak to that for certain.

Also, you might want to follow the step-by-step instructions posted here:

http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/SettingUpLotW

when you complete your LoTW sign-up. These instructions are very clear
and, in my opinion, better than what is on the ARRL web site. Just click
on each step and follow it EXACTLY. You should be on LoTW in short order.

Yes, I was using the dxlabsuite instructions when I started. As you
note, the ARRL instructions are not very good.

When I do a search, the only tq5 result is a shortcut which points to
the folder c:\program files\LOTW\certificates but the file is not in
that folder or anywhere else. I followed the instructions that you
cite from step one until this failure.

I don't even seem to be able to start over and try it again for a new
request.

I've been holding off enrolling in LOTW for a long time. It appears
that my hesitation in starting this process was warranted.

You might want to mention that this leaves the account without a password. I would not want mine in that state.

Finally, I decided to stray from the website instructions and save the

We'll see. But this reminds me of the flaky way the ARRL started up
with their VEC in the 80's. I am not yet impressed.

Your description of being able to save a file but not see it means that Vista's Folder Virtualization is at work, which in turn means that you aren't logged into the "account named administrator". When you are logged into this account, your applications can save files anywhere in the filesystem; when you aren't logged into this account, attempts to save files into "sensitive areas" -- like c:\program files -- are redirected as describe here:

Saving your .tq5 file to the desktop will work around this, but there may be other instances of this problem, and they may not be so obvious...

This isn't ARRL's fault ... You are seeing the fingerprints of
mother Microsoft who will not allow users applications to write
to the C:\Program Files directory tree. Turn off User Account
Control or install tQSL in a directory other that C:\Program
Files (I use D:\Ham Programs for all my ham software) and you
will not have the problem.

The LotW development team needs to update tQSL for Vista
compatibility but we'd all be better off if a low yield
thermonuclear device took out the Vista development team
and their "Microsoft knows best" attitude.

The only account that I have on this computer is the administrator
account. I still can't get it to be visible in the folder that is
suggested by dxlabsuite site. When I tried to request again, it asked
me if I wanted to save over the old file, but the old file is not there.

Finally, I decided to stray from the website instructions and save the
tq5 to the desktop. That seems to have worked, but I don't know what
the downstream consequences are.

We'll see. But this reminds me of the flaky way the ARRL started up
with their VEC in the 80's. I am not yet impressed.

I am not sure but UAC may prohibit saving to that tree too. At least to be
consistent it should. The idea is to stop writing to the file that contains
an executable exe. I really don't know as I have not tried this.

I have acquired a Laptop which came with Vista Home Premium, so may be back
to trying to make things work there, after I get a USB interface. I could
not pass up the deal from Sam's' Club as a 900 machine 17 Inch 1.8 gig dual
AMD Turion 160 gig with 1 gig memory replaced from Crucial for 52 dollars
for 261 dollars. I added 1 gig of memory so I have 2 gigs and it is fast.

Hi all,
I have a problem loading a certificate on a new pc.
I generated a request from an old pc, and loaded it OK.
I saved only the .tq6 file, not the .p12
Now on an new PC I can't load the certificate, the program give me an
error while searching something in C:/Documents and
settings/<COMPUTER_NAME>/Application Data/TrustedQSL/keys/...

Any advice to solve this ?

Thanks in advance

Unless you have access to the old PC, you will need to
contact LotW to "start over."

The LotW certificate consists of two parts, the public
key (the *.tq6 file) and the private key which exists only
on the system where you generated the "certificate" request.

When you "back up" a certificate the *.p12 file contains
both pieces of information in a "portable" form that allows
you to move the data or restore it to a different system,
If you fail to create and save the *.p12 file, you must have
access to the private key from the original system.

If you still have access to the old computer and can run
tQSL, simply create the *.p12 file. If you can no longer
run tQSL on the system, look for the tQSL configuration at:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\TrustedQSL.
You will need to copy the 'certs' and 'keys' directories
from the old system to the tQSL directory on your new
system.

Ciao Simone.
Only p12 will load into new PC.  Not TQ6.
Please request new UNSIGNED certificate.

No documentation required.

You will get new TQ6 via e-mail.

I've asked this question before and never really got an answer. I use
LOGic8 for my station logging. Very often when I ask logic to retrieve
incoming LOTW qsl's I see the same qsl 4 or 5 times in subsequent
downloads. Then they just go away and some others will take their place.
Does anyone know why that happens?

Some of this could be people re-uploading their entire logs every time they
send logs, instead of just uploading new QSOs. Every time they do it, any
QSLs you have with them pop to the 'top' of the QSL list.

BTW: Just started uploading WA1EUO Logs starting in 1972...got about
600 Qso's (For year 1972) uploaded to LOTW. If I go over 100 countries
for that call do I see it listed as WA1EUO in the DXCC Awards section
or are the old and new calls linked automatically. I will eventually
input countries credited to wa1euo that are on the deleted list. Just
wondering what to look for on LOTW as I continue building the old call

The DXCC submission form allows you to list former callsigns. You can't
receive more than one DXCC from a given entity, so your QSLs for WA1EUO
are combined with the ones for K1UO. If your DXCC records have been
computerized (meaning that you've submitted a DXCC application over the
last 10 years or so), your callsigns should be linked. You'll see that
if you link your DXCC record to your LotW account. In my case, the
awards/dxcc account has a list that's headed "This account includes
credits for the following: K1MU - UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WA1SPT -
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA"

You don't do anything to set up that linkage as it's done on the DXCC
side based on your "former callsigns" on the application form.

Can someone point me to a help file that will explain what I see when
I log into LOTW? I finally got some logs uploaded and accepted. Now,
I can see that there is a display when I click DXCC, but there is no
help on what it means.

Does ARRL ever plan to offer some support for this application, or is
it all done through groups such as this? Those who use LOTW seem to
be big supporters, but when I asked different members of my local
club, most of them say it isn't worth the trouble to get started.
From what I've seen, they may be right.

I've read some online comments similar to my own, but those who make
such observations are quickly smacked down by those LOTW advocates
who are so blind that they will not admit the warts of the system.

The first reply in defence of LOTW always cites the need for a secure
system. I certainly understand the need for a secure system-- it goes
without saying. But the point remains that it is difficult to get
started and difficult to use. From my uninformed point of view, I
would say that online banking requires a similar level of security.
At least, I hope the banks are closely watching our assets as well as
their own. But, if online banking was half as tough to start or use
as LOTW, there would be far fewer of us doing it. So, ARRL can write
all of the QST articles it wants, and the elite hams who have
mastered the system can continue to cast scornful looks and comments
at those of us who are still struggling, but if it is ever hoped that
widespread use of LOTW will occur, much more effort needs to be
expended in making the system user friendly and offering problem
support.

Thanks for the opportunity to comment.

Now..... I am prepared to receive the flaming responses from those

try clicking on Awards - select DXCC award account - Challenge

and you should see pending credits - ie log matches

Try playing around with the menus and learning the system - it is how I
worked it all out

What are you having problems with? The "Awards/Select DXCC Awards
Account" status screen?

It seems pretty self-explanatory to me. You have a list of potential
awards (Mixed, CW, Phone, and band awards) under the "Award" column.
Any award name with an "*" next to it (CW*, Mixed*, etc.) means that
you've been awarded such a DXCC certificate.
The "Selected" column counts the number of new LotW credits that have
been automatically selected - these are QSLs in the LotW system that
correspond to unconfirmed entities in your current DXCC account. You
can click on the award name to see the details of what QSLs have been
selected.
The "Applied" column is the number of QSLs in a pending application (IIRC).
The "Awarded" gives the count of entities confirmed in your DXCC
account for this award.
The "Total/Current" gives the total number of confirmed entities and
the number of confirmed current (not deleted) entities.

You can click the "View Award Credit Matrix" link to view your complete
DXCC record.

Is there something else on that page you're having problems with?

>Does ARRL ever plan to offer some support for this application, or is

lotw-help@... is very responsive to support requests, as is
calling them on the phone. E-mail is clearly cheaper. There's an
advantage to the League, clearly, for groups such as this to help
support the simple questions so that the staffers can work the hard issues.

What have you seen that makes you think it's not worth the trouble?
Many of the people I talk to won't bother because they don't have their
logs computerized. I can quite understand that - entering 20 years of
logs could take forever! However, if you've got your QSOs already in a
computerized format, submitting them to LotW is pretty easy.

>I've read some online comments similar to my own, but those who make

I'm not blind to the warts. Given a good logging program to hide the
underpinning, LotW isn't all that difficult. See below.

Using the current state of the US online banking system - which is VERY
primitive compared to most of the world - as a basis of comparison is
weak. If your online banking system uses a password, or a password
connected to an image, etc., then you're open to compromise. All that
someone has to do is to install a piece of spyware on your computer and
they'll own your bank account. What happens when your cash gets drained
since your password was stolen? You lose, your money is gone.
If the banks had to eat the losses in such cases, you'd see real
security overnight. So, no, the banks are watching their assets. As far
as your accounts are concerned, you're on your own.
(This is why my online banking account uses a one-time password token.
If you don't have the token in your possession, you can't log in, so
nobody can grab my money using a password stealer. But that's 'too
hard' to use, so banks generally don't use them.)

Wow, I didn't think I was elite just because I've figured out how to
work LotW. :-) I do try to control the scorn, as well. Hopefully this
message isn't too annoying.

As far as using LotW is concerned, it's not that hard, really. Yeah,
it's harder than it needs to be, takes a lot of steps to set up, and is
not very well described on the LotW pages. But, there's lots of other
help out there. for example, Dave Bernstein's webpage:
http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/SettingUpLotW
That's a very friendly set of directions for using LotW.

The communities using several logging programs also provide help to new
LotW users. I use DX4WIN, for which there's a lot of LotW help
available. I know Dave helps the DXLab users out with hiding as much of
the LotW complexity as he can.

The problem with LotW isn't the security, it the fact that the security
gets so much "in your face" (or at least in your way.) Using a good
logging program as the interface to LotW fixes a lot of the annoyance.

Given the help that's out there, how would you suggest making it more
friendly?
Why do you think there is no support?

Sorry if I'm not up to flaming. :-)
Your perception that LotW is too hard to use is too widely held. We
here on the reflector are trying to help bring new hams into the fold.
Taking potshots at new users that are making attempts to make their way
through the LotW maze isn't going to make LotW any more popular.

Thanks for your answer, Rick.

My bank makes it very difficult to log onto my account unless I am
using the same computer that I usually use. I assumed that was some
sort of security thing. If I try to access it from my wife's laptop
instead of my desktop, I have to supply extra numbers from my debit
card and answer a couple of security questions. I figured that was
pretty secure. Maybe I'll have to question that assumption.

I'm sure that LOTW is really fine. And since the ARRL is the granting
body for DXCC and WAS, they certainly can set up any kind of security
requirements that they see fit. After all, sending in your cards or
taking them to a card checker is not very easy either-- not to
mention all of the requirements about filling in the application and
placing the cards in proper order.

I suppose that I see the League continuing true to their past. LOTW
reminds me a lot of the half-baked Volunteer Examiner program that
they rolled out back in the eighties-- understaffed and ill
supported. Maybe I'm still irked at them over that. It just seems
that by turning off people initially, they sort of sabotage their own
project. Maybe I'm wrong. But if I wasn't so hard headed, I would
walk away from this after a one-week trial. However, I'm going to
trudge along and hope I pick up on it as I go, thanks to folks like
you who are willing to share.

As for support, I am still waiting to get a reply to my lotw support
question email from February 2.

Fortunately, I have 10 or 12 years of electronic logs. It probably
isn't worth it to try to convert paper logs.

There's a widely-known hack against those systems called a
"man-in-the-middle attack" that pretty much makes those sorts of
systems pretty easily broken. You've got to do something (install a
trojan) to enable it, but given the fact that there are millions of
spyware and botnet infected home machines out there means that people
can be easily convinced to take actions that make this sort of
protection very weak. I've seen a new system that seems quite safe
where the bank sends a code to your mobile phone each time you log in;
you enter that code along with your password. That seems to eliminate
the easy attacks.

In any case, this is very much off topic for this list so I'll shut up
about this.

>I'm sure that LOTW is really fine. And since the ARRL is the granting

I guess I'm spoiled in that the local DX club has a field checker
that's there at most meetings. I don't find the paperwork a problem as
my logging program prints out a submission sheet ready to go.

As to the requirements, well, LotW to the rescue. No application form
to fill out, no worrying about sorting the cards. See, all of your
problems solved! :-)

Yes, you've got to sort field checked or mailed cards in the order that
the league specifies.
That's addressed in the DXCC FAQ:
http://www.arrl.org/awards/dxcc/faq/#_Toc94949177 and
http://www.arrl.org/awards/dxcc/faq/#_Toc94949178

There's good reason why the League wants the cards in the preferred
order - it saves them money during the data entry. They don't have to
keep entering band and mode data for each QSO. That's got to save them
the work necessary for data entry. Since they come in sorted by band
then mode, the entry operator doesn't have to re-type band and mode for
each card.

>I suppose that I see the League continuing true to their past.

Yes, that's true. The League is trying to help their members by
minimizing the costs for operating the DXCC program, and trying to keep
DXCC fees low. I for one really appreciate it. (I hope their effort to
catch up on the DXCC application backlog is successful. It's gotten to
be too long.)

The biggest problem with LotW in my opinion is the fact that they
haven't added more awards. Especially non-ARRL awards, but it shouldn't
be a big deal to add things like VUCC, WAZ, etc. There's many people
that have no use for LotW because they don't care about DXCC or WAS.
Lack of investment in LotW is the root of many of the problems people
have. Too hard to use, too limited, too few users.

Wow!! I uploaded my 500 or so contacts from the WPX contest to LOTW, and in
about 3 minutes I had some return QSLs... Looks like
it is WAY faster than it used to be...
