I noticed the other day that the help text for adding a new location includes a discussion of entering the grid for VUCC - is that new or has it been there for a while?

Always been there, if by always you mean at least v1.11 (which is when
I started). Operators really should make sure those fields are filled
in correctly even though none of them "count" for now. I get a lot of
LoTW matches where the operator has neglected to fill in even the
state, let alone county, grid loc, or zones.

Here are maps of the zones for those of you that need to edit your locations.

http://www4.plala.or.jp/nomrax/ITU/index.html
http://www4.plala.or.jp/nomrax/CQ/index.html

BTW, correcting the zones, counties, and grid loc and then
re-uploading QSOs will NOT result in the creation of zombies.
Existing QSO records will merely be updated.

I created a subset of the logfile in .adif format. I try to use TQSL to "sign"
the file, which I think means to encrypt it. Well, I get an error message, "no
matching certs for QSO". I have no idea what that means. I have spent hours
trying to figure it out. I even sent a message to the ARRL help folks and I got
a message back to read the help file.... Well, brilliant.

Can someone please help me over this hurdle?

Your file should be an ADI file and you should be using the file TQSL to
sigh your ADI file.

Another check....If you launch TQSL Cert (not TQSL) you should see your
callsign certificate in gold. Is it there or is it red or some other color
or missing? If you click on the yellow callsign then you should see your
certificate properties. If you haven't applied for a certificate and
received the post card from the ARRL then you cannot sign the files yet.

No, it really does mean "sign" - it's just like signing a contract.
Whomever signs a log can be traced back, and any attempts to tamper
with the log after signing can be detected.

>Well, I get an error message, "no matching certs for QSO". I have no
>idea what that means.

What this means is that you've chosen a location with an associated
callsign where you don't have a certificate. You can't create a
location without selecting a callsign, so it seems odd that you're
running into this. The most obvious way I can think of for this to
happen is for you to import a certificate from ARRL, set up a location
that uses that cert, then delete the certificate. Now the location is
orphaned.

To diagnose this, open TQSL (not TQSLCert!). Choose the menu "Station",
"Edit Locations". Now, select the location you're trying to use, then
click on "Edit...". Choose the proper callsign for that location from
the "Call Sign" dropbox. If you can't pick the right callsign, then
your certificate is not installed properly. If that works OK, "Next"
your way through the menus and try signing your log again.

Gerry, you're misunderstanding.
While https://p1k.arrl.org/lotw/faq#getstart works, it has links that
point to places that don't exist.
That page starts with

          How do I get started?
Print out and read "Getting Started" (PDF)

Where "Getting Started" is a link to
http://www.arrl.org/lotw/getStartedGuide.pdf
which doesn't work.

The company that "upgraded" the ARRL website left dangling links all
over the place; this is just another one.
The link on the https://p1k.arrl.org/lotwuser/default page also points
nowhere.

Apparently

Without that document I think you are lost. I am thinking that the original poster has installed the TQSL program and is trying to encode his log file without all the hoop jumping of getting your postcard with a password from the ARRL. Basically he doesn't have a valid certificate yet. I am trying to see if I have the original Help pdf on my pc here but no luck so far.

Mark,
You can't get this error that way - when you try
to sign a log, the first thing you must do is to
select a location. You can't create a location in
TrustedQSL unless you have a valid certificate.
So, to get this error you've got to import a
cert, create a location using it, then delete the
cert. Or, install everything correctly on
computer "A", then try to move everything to
computer "B" using some shortcut.

You guys are good! I wasn't trying to withhold information, but rather give
just the pertinent data.

At one time, a few months ago I successfully uploaded my logs to the LoTW. At
that time I loaded the file that ARRL sent with my callsign. I double clicked
on the file and it associated it with the location. (I hope I am making some
sense.)

Now I tried to upload the next subset of the logfile. I thought the TQSL Cert
was handled. Apparently it wasn't. I needed to load the callsign file again
which I failed to do.

I think that is why I could click on the callsign in TQSL (not noticing that it
had a big red circle indicating something was wrong).

Thanks again for your help and expertise in helping me through this. As I
struggle with LoTW, I am keeping notes that are helpful to me.

It was interesting to ask other hams at a recent club meeting if they use LoTW.
Most in this small sample did not because they got stuck on some point like I
did, and gave up. I will now recommend this forum.

programs. However, you *will* have an easier time if you use DXLab's
DXKeeper logging program -- or any other logging program that supports
LoTW for that matter -- rather than trying to interact with it
"manually".

Thanks for the recommendation. This is a wealth of valuable information for
someone learning how to use LoTW. Since this wasn't provided by ARRL I'm glad
that this was done.

Two Days….

Two whole days I have spent trying to get my damned log to load onto the LOTW.

My certificate number shown on the webpage does not match any of the ones I can find in any of my certificates.

I have downloaded the software and uploaded the TQ5 files so many times trying to make the damned certificate match, and it just won’t do it.

Trying to find a “Yellow Brick Road” was a challenge: only to find it attached to one of the downloads: 23 pages of PDF! WHAT!

IF YOU CANT EXPLAIN HOW TO RUN LOTW IN ONE PAGE, YOU NEED A NEW SYSTEM!

I HAVE NEVER HAD A SINGLE TASK ON THE COMPUTER THAT WAS SO CONFUSING, COMPLICATED AND CONVOLUTED.

IF THE DAMNED ARRL PUBLISHING COMPANY REALLY WANTED TO DO SOMETHING WORTHWHILE WITH ITS MONEY IT WOULD BUY E-QSL AND MOVE ALL THE LOGS TO IT AND DUMP THE DAMNED LOTW!

Can you tell I have had enough? Why make it so tough to use?

It is NOT the CIA, NSA, FBI, AEC or any other organization that needs to have this many hoops to jump thru to do a simple task.

PLEASE, PLEASE PUT THE DAMNED INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LOTW ON A SINGLE PAGE “YELLOW BRICK ROAD” ON THE TOOLBAR WITH LOTW!

I know I can’t be the only one who feels this way, just maybe the only one willing to vent it!

I am walking away from this for now lest I rip the monitor off the desk in frustration.

Fortunately, Dave AA6YQ felt your pain some time ago and put what I

Peter's correct - have a look at the DXLab step-by-step directions.

One common problem that isn't addressed there is that you must use the
*same* computer that issued your certificate request to ARRL to install
the resulting signed certificate. You can't issue a request from
computer "A" and then install it on computer "B" - even if "A" and "B"
are the same computer that you just happened to wipe clean and reinstall.

After that's done, you can move your certificate anywhere you want as a
.p12 file.

Michael:  my simplistic solution is this....contact Kathy Allison, KA1RWY, the LoTW Specialist at ARRL - her e-mail address is kallison@...

She helped me far better and faster than any other resource 'bout three months ago when I had a certificate problem - she is responsive to e-mails, follows up on what needs to be done....so, just contact her and "get 'er done"!  I suggest you send her an e-mail, follow that up 'bout a half day later with a phone call (860-594-0295)

I can NOT believe she won't get it all squared away for you, Mike.

This page provides step-by-step instructions for these seven scenarios:

1. Install the LotW software on your PC

2. Request your initial certificate

3. Accept your initial certificate

4. Create a station location

5. Request an additional certificate

6. Accept an additional certificate

You were lucky...I couldn't even download the damn pdf instructions.....the links were broken.......If I hired a company to do work for me, I would make sure that they had completed the task properly before paying them.

My LOTW  works but I always upload the adi to eQSL first as it has a nice checking feature that will tell me if there is anything wrong with my adi file. I can correct the problems before sending the encrypted file on to the LOTW machine.

Call me perverse but I have my logs on an Access database and I have a convoluted process to output an xls file and then to create an ADI file from that. At least I have step by step control of the whole tedious process.

Maybe you could make a simple one line adi file by hand and see if that will upload. You can create the file as .txt and then rename the file extension to .adi and then try to encrypt with the "wonderful" TQSL program

I have been frustrated also.
The problem is ...If you fallow the instructions it will not work.
There are some things left out.
Get some one from the ARRL to send the new directions.
That is what I did. Then it worked.

Just so we are all on the same page here, the file generated by TQSL
for uploading to LoTW is not encrypted. It is a regular ADIF file
that includes field that has your digital signature (which is from
your certificate). It's then compressed using the ZLib library and
can be viewed by any program that supports that library. Here's the
first few lines of a file I signed with one of my certificates:

<TQSL_IDENT:34>TQSL V1.11 Lib: V2.0 Config: V1.11
<Rec_Type:5>tCERT
<CERT_UID:1>1

OK..good to know. I must admit that I have bothered to try and look at the
tq8 file. In my process it's either working by then or not.

It really shouldn't be this complicated. This reiterates a point that has
been brought up many times...after all these years, the league still thinks
this level of difficulty is acceptable, yet can't get basic awards added
that were promised many years ago.
