VERY surprised that profile change form does not check for valid address. The help request form checks so looks like wrong coder wrote profile form.
Now to see how long before forwarding starts.

Who said it would give a user direct access to SMTP records if it were automated. Only those with a membership would be able to change anything and they would have to provide their email address to do0 it. Not much danger here and MUCH better service. the point of a forwarding is to not have to tell everyone a new address if you lose your primary address. If you have to wait 5 days (on my 5th day now) it is worthless.

Heh! What is the date of that RFC?? :)
When RFC 821 first came out 30 years ago, e-mail was designed as a relatively crude store-and-forward application back when dial-up UUCP connections were common (remember bang paths??). While even the latest RFC 5321 does allow for a 4-5 day wait before declaring a message undeliverable (I tried to find your 72-hour reference, but go lost somewhere around section 4.5.4.1 :), today's providers of e-mail services would quickly go out of business if even hour-long delays were to become common. Granted that SMTP may allow for longer delivery times, but today's market place and on-line community dictates what we have come to expect: near-instantaneous delivery.
If there are delivery problems with arrl.net-addressed e-mail, it is almost always a problem with the downstream delivery client. Once in awhile the data center ARRL contracts with to provide e-mail services goes down and in the past they have gone down for a day or two at a time, but those kinds of problems typically affect all arrl.net users, not just isolated accounts. So if my arrl.net e-mail works well, yours should, too.
As for address changes, I am sure this is a manual process at ARRL where the changes are batched up for periodic updating. To give users direct access to SMTP records would just invite mischief.

I don't make the rules, I just run servers that have to followthem. And please note: I didn't say it would take three days to deliver. WhatI said was SMTP systems are allowed 3 days to deliver. I also noted thatthe vast majority of messages are delivered near instantly - but that isnot guaranteed. In spite of that, most users - as you so clearlyexemplified here - expect near instant delivery to be the norm and arequite surprised on those few occasions, when it isn't. But, since - as my log shows - messages to the ARRL forwarding serviceare being accepted - nearly instantly - I suggest you considerreviewing the configuration of your email client or the forwardingaddress you submitted to ARRL's service. I'd suggest contacting the ARRL for further assistance on this issue. 73, KA7O On 02/13/2012 05:50 AM, Gilbert Baron wrote:You Are so far out of it that it is unbelievable. If email took three daysas a regular thing that email provider would be in the trash can. I have hadMANY email providers and even may years ago it would be seconds for 99.999%of email. Maybe RFC says that but in practice it is not that way. -----Original Message-----From: ARRL-LOTW@yahoogroups.com [mailto:ARRL-LOTW@yahoogroups.com] On BehalfOf KA7OSent: Sunday, February 12, 2012 2:55 PMTo: ARRL-LOTW@yahoogroups.comSubject: Re: [ARRL-LOTW] Re: Arrl mail forwarding Uh, actually - no. It can take - and is allowed to take - up to 3 days (72 hours) for deliveryof an email message. This is by design and 'rule'. We've become quite spoiled - to the point of expectation - by our systemsnormally doing things much faster than that. But, by design and by RFC, email is NOT an instant system by any means. If you need assured instant delivery, you use IM, voice or other point topoint technologies. 73 ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
