I deleted an e-mail I shouldn’t have. I thought I saw an e-mail from Gaylon
saying that AQ now had a free version (not just a 60 day free trial). Would
someone please send me the details and where to download this free version. What
is the difference between that version and the paid version.

Thank you for your help.
Margaret

Margaret,

You can find the free version here: http://www.ancquest.com/AQBasics.htm
There is a link there to list the differences between versions.

Help, I am checking for changes. When I finish a section it is my practice
to go back and run the check again and see if there are any I missed. Here
is my problem. Let us call the records A,B,C and D.

If I check then A and B show changed. I review or mark as reviewed and
check again and C and D show changed. I review these and run again and A
and B show as changed. This sequence of AB the CD repeats. And on and on.
Any ideas?

When I have had a problem with the check for changes repeating the same
individuals time after time I have had to do one of several things to get it to
go away.
First, when I do a review I always do a save on the review screen whether I need
to make any changes or not.
Second, I look to see if I need to do a check and repair on the AQ data base to
make sure there are no data base errors.
Third, if there are no errors on the AQ data base then I unlink the individual
from NFS and then relink the individual. This usually takes care of the
problem.

Many thanks. I ran check and repair and AQ found a marriage problem. That
fixed it.

Subject: Beta test of new AQ build
ghfindlay
Send Email Send Email

All:

If any of you would like to help us out for a quick test, we would
appreciate it.

We are about to release build 28 of AQ 12.1. Before we do, we would like
some of our users to test it and make sure that they feel it is ready to
be released.

These are the items that have been fixed or enhanced since build 27:

Added: AQ's ability to let you do custom Internet searches has been
enhanced. In addition to using the given names and surname, you can now
specify birth date and place and death date and place.

Added: In the December 2010 release of FamilySearch, millions or
billions of indexed records were made available to the public. We have
added searches under "Search Favorite Sites" to access these records.
(There are three searches, labeled, "FamilySearch (New-Birth)" which
will supplement the name with birth information; "FamilySearch
(New-General)" which will supplement the name with birth year and death
year; and "FamilySearch (New-Death)" which will supplement the name with
death information.) This should be a exciting boon to users of AQ, who
want to search for their ancestors.

Added: The ability to select a different language easily from the
Pedigree and Family views. This patch file contains a partial
translation of AQ into Finnish. If you could please test selecting the
Finnish language, the switching back to English to see if everything
looks smooth. (We expect to release a complete translation of German in
the next few days, along with partial translations of a few other
languages, including Spanish. The Finnish translation we are providing
for this test only has a couple of screens translated. The partial
translations of other languages will have the most commonly used screens
and reports translated.)

Enhanced: Some screens that seemed extra cramped were expanded a bit.
This made it easier for translators to convert short English text into
sometimes longer non-English text, but also makes these screen feel less
crowded.

Fixed: In the December 2010 release of FamilySearch, FamilySearch
introduced a bug in their API which in turn, caused AQ to crash. AQ will
no longer crash in this situation, but will report the FamilySearch error.

Fixed: In AQ's build 12.1.27, a feature was added to allow LDS users to
search ordinance batches for a person. If the person was not found in
the list of batches, AQ would sometimes hang. Fixed.

================================

If you would like to download and test this new build, please follow
these instructions:

1) Make a backup of your database.

2) Close AQ

3) Download this file: http://www.inclinesoftware.net/files/Latest.zip

4) Extract the contents of this file into your AQ program folder (which
is typically "C:\Program Files\Incline Software\Ancestral Quest 12.1")

5) Run AQ -- go to the "About Ancestral Quest" screen under the 'Help'
menu to verify that the date of the build is "1/11/2011". It should
still show that it is build 27 -- we will update the build number to
build 28 after giving users a day or two to give feedback on this build.

6) If you have successfully installed the patch, please use AQ normally,
and test the new searches on FamilySearch as well as switching between
languages, then let me know by Thursday (1/13) morning whether you found
any problems at "gfindlay@...". (We want to release this by
mid-day Thursday, so we're on a tight schedule.)

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

I thought I'd give this a shot so I have downloaded the new beta build.

I can see the box where I can switch language, but I don't understand the
search feature:

(There are three searches, labeled, "FamilySearch (New-Birth)" which
will supplement the name with birth information; "FamilySearch
(New-General)" which will supplement the name with birth year and death
year; and "FamilySearch (New-Death)"

Where do I find that? I have looked under Internet and under Family
Search? Under Internet I can get search Family search general and IGI, but
nowhere to specify birth or death info??

Gunilla:

From the menubar, choose *Internet > Search Favorite Sites*. That is
how you can get to these new searches.

You can also select *Internet *> *Favorite Sites...* and *choose one*
of those search options, then click to *Make **Default *and *Close *the
window. Then, for one-click access to that search option, click the
far-right button on the Toolbar (the computer in front of the globe,
labeled /Connect/Search favorite WWW site/).

See my comments below, but keep in mind I still consider myself a novice
genealogy person.

I took me a while to get the patch file into my default folder as I am
running Windows 7
64 bit, and it protects both

"C:\Program Files\Incline Software\Ancestral Quest 12.1")

and

"C:\Program Files(x86)\Incline Software\Ancestral Quest 12.1")

but I finally did get it there OK.

As I have never tried the language tools so I was not familiar with
doing this.
I saw two different ways that should change the language, the one from the
tools menu, did allow me to change to another language and back to English,
(not sure which language it was, but it was not Finnish) but I did not see
Finnish, but as I said I am only English speaking. The other method was
a drop down
box in the top right hand corner, no Finnish there either, but if I
selected a different
language, I tried more then one but not all, it took me to you web
site with the
opportunity to download different language modules.

A user just pointed out that I overlooked something. If you are trying
to follow my request to switch to Finnish and then back to English,
realize that the non-English languages are in their native form. Finnish
appears on the list as "Suomi," not as "Finnish". :-) My mistake.

All:

We released, a couple of days ago, a new build (28) of AQ 12.1. Those of
you who have recent copies of AQ will have noticed this already in the
NewsLine window when you start AQ, but for the rest of you, let me tell
you what is in the new build.

But first, let me review how to download and install it:

1) Start AQ
2) Backup your file -- you should be doing this regularly
3) Go to the Internet Menu, then to "Check for Latest Release"
4) Your browser should take you to the download page -- download the
Basic installer
5) Close AQ
6) Run the installer you downloaded in step 3.

New improvements to look for in the new release include

General Enhancements

      * Internet Searches: In the past, you could set up customized
Internet searches using the First names and Last name of any person in
your file. With this build, AQ also lets you now use the birth date and
place and death date and place with customized Internet searches. This
should provide for more refined searching.

      * Access to Hundreds of Millions of Free Records: FamilySearch has
just released to the public hundreds of millions of indexed records,
many of which have images. AQ now has built-in searches for these
records to aid in your research. (To use these, go to the Internet menu,
then to "Search Favorite Sites.")

      * Access to Holocaust Records: Yad Vashem in Jerusalem has indexed
records on roughly half of the 6 million victims of the Holocaust
available for public searching. AQ now has a built-in search to access
these records. (As above, use "Search Favorite Sites.")

      * Non-English Language Selection: A dropdown selection box of
several non-English languages has been added to the main Pedigree and
Family Views. If you don't have any language modules installed, you will
have an option to download several translations of AQ, so that you can
print reports in other languages, or work in the various screens of AQ
in non-English languages. (None of the languages are ready today -- we
hope to have some ready within a week.)

      * Expanded Screens: Some of the more crowded screens, such as the
Individual entry screen and the Individual Search screen were widened to
provide more room and feel less crowded.

Bug Fixes to nFS Features

      * FamilySearch Bug: In the December 2010 release of
New.FamilySearch, a bug was introduced by FamilySearch which in turn
caused AQ to crash. AQ no longer crashes after it reports the
FamilySearch bug. (You may occasionally see an error 500 if you
encounter this bug.)

      * Search Through Batches: Build 27 introduced a new feature that
allowed an LDS user to search through batches of submitted ordinances to
find a record. A bug was discovered wherein if you searched for someone
who was not on the list, AQ would hang. Fixed.

I think there is another bug in release 28.

I have been using advanced filter to find names that needed baptism. It used
to work pretty good.

Now at least half of what comes up actually already has the temple dates.
And I ought to get only those that don't have a temple baptism date.

This how I set up the parameters:

Name Exists

And

Birth date is less than 1890

And

Birth place contains (name of one county)

Or

Birth place contains (name of another county)

And

LDS Baptism Date does not exist.

Why am I getting so many that already have temple baptism done?

Like I said above, it used to work before this last update.

As you know, FamilySearch is in a constant state of change.

Search options in FamilySearch that have long been in beta testing are
just being made public.

As of the December 15 build of AQ, there are new options for searching
against the newly released records of FamilySearch. I would recommend
that you do the following:

1) Open AQ's "Internet" menu.
2) Select "Search Favorite Sites".
3) Experiment with using the three new searches available for
FamilySearch: in addition to sending the name as a search criteria, one
option will send birth information, another option will send death
information, and the third will send birth and death years.
4) If you decide that you like one of these options best, then make it
you default search by doing these steps:
    a) Go back to the "Internet" menu
    b) Select "Favorite Sites"
    c) Highlight the option you want to be the default
    d) Click the "Make Default" button
    e) Now that this is set to be your default Internet search, you can
use the Toolbar shortcut to activate it. You'll see the icon on the far
right of AQ's main toolbar that looks like a PC superimposed on a globe
-- simply click that icon to use your default search.

After a little more time has passed to allow FamilySearch to solidify
its constant changes, we will probably change AQ's "Internet" options
for FamilySearch to migrate from the older search to the newer search.

AQ Support,

I clicked the Internet menu > AncestralQuest Home Page > LDS
[http://www.ancquest.com/LDSFeats.htm]
I noticed that this page is badly out of date, in particular:
...
Update ordinance information from Online IGI through special, efficient
search filters [IGI is no longer used for that purpose, AQ uses the new
process.]
Submit names to TempleReady [no longer used]
Update ordinance information from TempleReady [no longer used]
Export names to Ancestral File [no longer possible, although PRF accepts
submissions to the best of my knowledge]
...
Prequalifying of individuals for TempleReady submissions [no longer used]
...

It would only take a few minutes to have someone update this page to give
current information. The page makes AQ look years out of date, which we know
is not true.

You can run your registered copy on all your personal computers and also put
it on a flash drive for mobility. It is great that way.

I move from desktop to laptop to flash drive depending on where I am and
what is available to me.

Just install it on your laptop and put in the registration key.

I have a family in my local record that is out of syn with nFS. They are not
aligned.

When I search for the perons and then go to sync AQ freezes. This has happened
several times.

I have tried from:

a) within the ordinace reservation system

b) reviewing on family search and choosing parents/siblings

Whichever what I go AQ freezes.

I have done check repair database and it still does not help.

Any ideas please? Thank you.

I also find the Ordinance Reservation System slow to work with. Slow to load and
I probably only have about 20 names in there. Would love to add more but it
takes forever to load and then forever to review each person. These are people
submitted to Temple File. I suspect this is slow internet problems rather than
AQ problems. I only have about 4.5 Mbs speed but cannot usually get that to the
USA.

I thought I had figured out how to add sources properly in AQ, but I still don't
get it right yet.

I want to use one source 30 or 40 times BUT I want to add the data about each
individual without it showing up for everyone.

In PAF there is Actual Text inside the Sourse file; and after that is closed,
and selected; there is another Actual Source where one can add pages of data (if
one wishes) without it showing up for anyone but the one individual.

Can this be done in AQ? If so, how?

In AQ sources -

For each Citation of the Source - each individual use of the source has its
own unique citation - you can use any of the citation fields that suit your
purpose and they will only show up in that single use of the source - the
citation fields are - Vol/Page/Film (for the detailed citation reference);
Entry Date (for when this source was created); Reference (for your own
filing reference of any source document copy); Actual Text (if you want to
transcribe the content of the source); Comments (if you want to add any
extra information or views about the source).

You need to make sure that when you define the source that you define it
with a generic description that will suit its multiple use - in other words,
do not define a source as "Birth Certificate for John Jones" - because you
will only be able to use that once - whereas, if you define the source as
"Birth Certificate" (maybe "Birth Certificate - England & Wales" to separate
them from "Birth Certificate - Scotland/Nevada etc" - you can use it
multiple times, each time providing the unique citation detail that is
unique to each use.

I often find that many people in setting up sources feel that they have to
use every field offered in the set up for defining a source - you do not -
only use those fields that you understand and that make sense to you.
Especially - do not use the Call no./Actual Text/Comments in the source
definition unless these fields can really be applied to every use of the
source. You will only see the source citation details after you have set up
the "Source" and select it for use against a specific event - then, as
described above, all the citation details entered will be unique to that
particular use of the "Source".

Thank you for trying to help. Unfortunately I should have asked about citations,
not sources.

After the source was made and selected, and I added the citation, and saved it,
The questions that followed of whether to apply these changes to all events
that use this citation, etc., had me stumped until this morning. Your message
made me take a better look at the various screens and I hope I have now got my
head on straight.

Thank you,
Cleadie B.

       In AQ sources -

For each Citation of the Source - each individual use of the source has its

own unique citation - you can use any of the citation fields that suit your

purpose and they will only show up in that single use of the source - the

citation fields are - Vol/Page/Film (for the detailed citation reference);

I thought I had figured out how to add sources properly in AQ, but I still

don't get it right yet.

I want to use one source 30 or 40 times BUT I want to add the data about

each individual without it showing up for everyone.

In PAF there is Actual Text inside the Sourse file; and after that is

closed, and selected; there is another Actual Source where one can add pages

of data (if one wishes) without it showing up for anyone but the one

individual.

Can this be done in AQ? If so, how?

Subject: Beta Test of New FamilySearch

All:

New FamilySearch is now in beta test of the February, 2011 release. It
is expected to be available until about February 14.

I have just made available a special version of AQ that will work with
the beta of New FamilySearch, rather than the live data on New
FamilySearch.

If you have the time and energy, please spend a bit of time over the
next few days testing AQ with the new features of New FamilySearch. It
is possible that New FamilySearch has introduced bugs that might affect
AQ. If we discover these now, we might be able to get FamilySearch to
fix the bugs before they release the February 2011 build.

(Some of you may have experienced a bug introduced in the December 2010
release, which causes an error 500 when looking up ordinance reservation
information on some individuals. Unfortunately, even though we reported
this to FamilySearch immediately, it has still not been fixed. But if
you find other bugs, we may be able to alert FamilySearch in time to fix
it before they release this new build.)

If you'd like to test AQ with the beta version of nFS, please:

1) Download this file: http://www.inclinesoftware.net/files/AQ-NFSBeta.zip

2) Unzip the contents of this file into your AQ 12.1 program folder,
which is normally:

"C:\Program Files\Incline Software\Ancestral Quest 12.1"

This will put a new file named, "AncquestNFSBeta.exe" into your folder.
It shouldn't cause any problems with your normal version of AQ.

3) When you want to run the test with the beta version of NFS, run this
file. It will act just like your normal version of AQ, but will access
the beta version of nFS rather than the normal New.FamilySearch.org.

You will know that you are running the special version, because the
title bar of AQ will have "[NFS Beta]" as part of the title, and when
you login to nFS, you will see that you are signing into
"ftbeta.FamilySearch.org" rather than "new.familysearch.org".

Any changes you make in nFS while using this special version of AQ will
be made to the beta database, not to the live data. So you can
experiment and try things that you would normally might not do, and it
won't affect the live data on nFS. Please test AQ's "NFS" features that
you normally use to see if they all work as expected. If you find any
problems, please let me know ASAP. ALSO, we recommend that you work on a
copy of your AQ or PAF database while testing, rather than on your own
permanent database.

IMPORTANT: When you prepare a test copy of your database to use in this
testing, go to AQ's "FamilySearch" menu and use the "Unlink" tool to
UNLINK ALL INDIVIDUALS. If you have used the Ordinance Reservation and
Tracking System, first flush all reservations from AQ's database by: 1)
Going into the "Reserve Ordinances/Create Batches" screen and Remove all
records; 2) Going into the "Manage Batches" screen and remove all batches.

To test with the Beta data of New FamilySearch, you need to flush all
your old links, because the beta data is older, and may not have some of
the records you have linked to. This would cause errors in AQ as it
tries to locate missing nFS records.

So during testing, start fresh with your test database and link records
as you go during testing. Also if you are testing the Reservation
system, make reservations in the beta system as you go.

If you are unable to login to the beta version of NFS with this special
version of AQ, try these two things:

1) Make sure you are using the new LDS Account rather than an older NFS
Login. The older login will no longer work in NFS once this build of NFS
is released.

2) See if you are set up to run in the beta of New FamilySearch. Go to
"ftbeta.familysearch.org" in your browser. If your login credentials
work there, they should work in AQ. If they don't work there, then you
won't expect AQ to be able to log you into this special beta version of
NFS.

Thank you,

Gaylon Findlay

Dear Gaylon...

This particular version of nFS is for non-members and so tjwy could
create a different log on to check out the features that will NOT show
LDS data. There is a process to go through too. Just a little
headsup!! ---- Terry

Please help clear up something for me. Is the download of the free version of AQ
and the registered version the same, the difference being that by putting in the
registration code you get the full features? Or is it a different file? I am
trying to help people get started using AQ and most want to try it out before
buying it.

Thanks for the help,
Margaret
