ICOM makes a P25 capable VHF mobile and HT that covers 136-174 MHz and also P25 capable
UHF mobiles and HTs in 2 ranges, 400-470 MHz and 450-520 MHz.
They are conventional only, no trunking.

Kenwood makes a P25 mobile & HT, 136-174 MHz that I think may now have a trunking option.

Don't mean to duplicate a question/post, but sometimes on these
yahoogroups, the database information sometimes may not be updated.

Can someone please post a list of current P25 2-meter ham repeaters for
Northern IL/Chicago area, along with the Output, Input, and NAC
required?

Thanks in advance!

Any idea if the high split 450-520 icom p25 radios (portable and
mobile) play OK down into the 440 band in p25 mode or are you stuck
with buying the 400-470 split?

Thanks in advance

As far as I know the database here on the group is fairly accurate.

Brian,

I have heard of one that was programmed into the ham band, but I have no idea how well it performed.

Guys, I run a UHF P25 repeater here and we've started thinking of
reducing the channel width from 25kHz to 12.5kHz.

We're looking into improving the selectivity and spectral power efficiency.

Any hints or experience on such from others?

I too have played with one that was programmed below 450. I believe
it started to lose VCO lock around 446, and I am not sure on the
hardware mods that can be done to correct that, like you can on Astrro
Spectra's from Motorola.

Hello All,
Well its always been a toss up between p25 and D-STAR over here. I
have the IC-91AD for D-Star and seems to be working just fine. Well,
sure enough I heard a local repeater here is putting up a p25 repeater
up and that would really be wonderful since its close too me. Well,
just wondering what Motorola radio's out there do p25. With a up
comming ham fest right around the corner this would be good to know.
Also, what and I looking to spend on a basic p25 radio? I know the
MOTOROLA ASTRO SABER does p25 and see them going for $500+ on ebay.
This the cheapest HT on the market these days?

Please fill me in with what you know.

Thanks

Jeffrey

Jeff,

Motorola:
Astro Saber
Astro Spectra
XTS 3000
XTS 3500
XTS 2500
XTS 5000
XTL 5000

Make sure the first number of the flash code is either 1 or 5 for the
radio to be able to be P25.

Kenwood, Icom, Vertex, EF Johnson, and Thales also make P25 radios,
The EF Johnson and Thales are Front Panel Programable when set up for
it and are fairly inexpensive.

Add Tyco and/or M/A-Com to the vendor list... several models spanning

In particular :
P7100ip

And a few models being released soon... to be announced...
Mastr III stations of later generation can be upgraded, older ones
may be retrofit-able with the required parts in some cases.

The ICOM (portable and mobile) is front panel programmable as well.

Also, the ICOM has a "tactical group" feature that lets you copy from banks/channels to a "tactical bank". and you may then clone (radio to radio) just the tactical bank (or the whole radio).

Don't forget Bendix/King (aka BK Radio) with the DPH, DPH-Command, and
DMH mobile, as well as a tactical repeater.

And if you have too much money, look up Wulfsberg.

ICOM also makes PCR1500 and PCR2500 receivers.  Each have a single option slot, and 2 possible option modules.

Nick,

Does the icom portable need program software or can it be completely

Shawn,

To my knowledge all of the mentioned radios need to be programmed with
software FIRST and have FPP (Front Panel Programable) set by software
before they are able to do so when the radio is bought new. This may
not be the case for a used radio, some may already be set, some may not.

Jeff,

The cheapest portables would be a Motorola Astro Saber Model 1 (no
keypad, no screen, 16 channels, no longer made and would have to be
bought used/2nd hand), the most expensive would be the Motorola XTS
5000 Model 3 (full keypad, screen, 800 channels, current model made).
You might also be able to get a Thales/RACAL 501 fairly inexpensive
(VHF Only, FPP, Full keypad, screen, used/2nd hand), or an EF Johnson
model 2 (limited keypad, screen, FPP used/2nd hand) or a model 3 (same
as model 2 with a full keypad).

The cheapest mobiles I believe is a toss up, but probably a Motorola
Astro Spectra W4 low power (knobs and limited buttons on the
faceplate, 45 watts). Most expensive would be the Woulfsburg (It is
primarily an aviation radio, but i have seen it used in a mobile set-
up), as for a realistic mobile, Motorola XTL 5000 high power radio
with a remote mount O3 head (or any remote mount package for that
matter).

Good luck with the hunt.

Dan,

That was a good overview... I will admit that the Thales-Racal is very
nice and the price is not bad (E-Bay $300), along with the face that is
keypad programmable. The only Motorola handheld that allows for that is
the XTS-5000 and even that requires a RSS that allow for that to be
programmed in.
Speaking of Motorola, there is some outstanding prices on the Astro I,
II, and III. Recently saw an ASIII (E-Bay) for $245. Of course, I have
to point out that since no one sanctions pirated software, one needs to
pay Motorola for the RSS/CPS software, and currently the price for the
software is $450, assuming they are willing to sell it.

Kim,

The Motorola CXT 2500 is FPP as well, I have played with two and with
the exception of fewer channels to program, and smaller form factor,
is exactly like the XTS 5000. I am playing with a couple of the RACAL/
Thales radios now and so far I like them, they play nice with the
other P25 radios I have. They are very slim (slimmer than an Astro
Saber), extremely light, and the battery is designed to be attached
anyway it is positioned (it is a 1/4 twist to lock with contacts on
both side of the top of the battery, the radio has a battery catch on
either side if the body, if that makes sense).

As for other FPP portables, Vertex makes one as well and it will also
take and additional board for another band to receive (i.e. VHF radio
will accept UHF board for dual band receive and vice versa).

I have owned and played with all of the various Motorola portables,
and my favorite is a toss up between the Astro Spectra Model 3 and the
XTS 2500 with FPP. EF Johnson is a close 2nd in my book with the
added feature that a model 2 radio (limited keypad) can also be set up
for FPP. I have just started to play with the RACAL/Thales so i don't
have much to say about them yet. All of the above have been mainly
used for amateur bands, with various other uses (GMRS, MURS, FRS on
low power, Authorized county frequencies) and all have been very nice
to use.

It depends on what you are looking for in a portable. BTW the Astro
Saber and XTS 5000 are the only ones that I know of that the ability
to use a convertacom to be used in a mobile environment without having
to change the configuration of the radio.

As for mobiles, I have only played with the Astro Spectra thus far and
with all of the configurations (low power, high power, w3, w4, w5, w7,
w9 control heads, remote, dash and console), I would like to start
playing with some of the other manufacturers to see how well they play
and work.

Again, just my experience over the past 3-4 years so far.

That would depend on new or used, and what band you wish to use...

In VHF and UHF "NEW".... Kenwood, Icom and Vertex would probably
prevail cost wise..... as all are what would be considered ( fairly
or not, no judgement here, just perception) as mid tier Public
Safety... Most of the others would be considered High Tier Public
Safety/ Govt...service radios and thus higher priced in general..
usually for mostly justified reason...

That is no way intended to slight these 3 vendors, as they are all 3
very competitive in the market.. it is just a different target audience...

In 700/800/900 the list gets a lot shorter....

I do not know if you actually said what band you were looking for???

This is a ham list, but questions sometimes are more broad than that :-)

And yes some of us do have market access to product from these vendors :-)

Excellent point on the software.  That's why it's frequently more cost effective to go with another manufacturer.

The ICOM is similar to most LM type radios.

LM radios in general need to be programmed initially using software.  During this programming you setup the ability to front panel program.  There are also a number of items that are only software programmable.  The list is too long to mention, but unit ID's, signaling options (P25 vs 2 tone vs. etc...) .

Once you setup the radio, ICOM allows Freq, CTCS/DCS (for analog & dual mode channels) Channel text, and P25 talkgroup (for digital and dual mode channels).

Nick,

Does the icom portable need program software or can it be completely

All,

My experience with Motorola software costs was a bit lower than what
has been described here. I currently subscribe to three of their
software platforms: ASTRO Saber/XTS 3000, ASTRO 25 CPS and MTS 2000.
All total, I paid $750 which covers three years of updates.

Frankly, I think their prices are outrageous. But, when you consider
this is less than $21 a month, that is not that bad.

BTW: because I have recently switched to Racal portables, all of my
VHF APCO 25 Motorola and Bendix King gear is for sale (XTS 2500, XTS
5000, DPH, all FPP). Because I am unsure if it is permissible to
list the prices, I will not. Feel free to contact me directly, if
interested.
