Once every generation, we get a chance for a new Motorcycle CrashCausation
Study. The last one, by Harry Hurt, was published in 1981. Itmade
recommendations that led to always-on headlights and improvementsin rider
training. These were major factors in the one-third reductionin motorcycle
fatalities between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s.

InOctober 2009, US DOT announced a new Crash Causation Study authorizedby the
SAFETEA-LU bill. The scope of the study has since been trimmedto only 300
crashes, far fewer than the 900 to 1200 originallyrequired, which is what all
experts agree is needed for goodstatistics. There are full details about this
issue at BikeSafer.comCrash Study Petition Fact Page, including the official
statements,stakeholders and background information.

Bikers need this newstudy because 5290 bikers die yearly in crashes, we don't
fullyunderstand why, and we need good crash causation information to ridesafely
and inform public policy. The new study has the potential tofind the current
causes of crashes, and identify successful ridingstrategies that might work for
us all.

We believe that thestakeholders need to figure out a way to use our tax dollars
wisely andensure the study samples 900 to 1200 crashes, as originally required.

Pleasesign the petition at BikeSafer.com Crash Study Petition. Bikers have
astake in this outcome, and we need to have a voice in the issue. If youcould
forward this to your mailing list, it would help get the word out.

...now these guys are (chuckle) bikers!

No one will deny that the term "Biker" was initially applied to a hard core
minority of the motor cycling public who (as the saying goes) "...Ate, Slept,
Lived, Loved, and Dreamed Motorcycles..."

When i was a youngster these were guys and gals who, as the song goes, "...Wore
A Black Leather Jackets With AN Eagle On The Back..."

Regardless of what they called themselves, these people were the rugged
individuals who applied their motorcycles to their every day lives. Moreover,
they pushed their skill, endurance, and their machines to the limit.

Take a good look at these pictures. They are the Standard....... the metric by
which the term "Biker" was originally defined.

No matter who we are, what we ride or when we ride it, if we call ourselves
"Bikers" this is the legacy to which we aspire.

So, now the question we each have to ask ourselves is simply this....... "how do
i measure up ?"

Don't know about you, but me....i'm humble by these pictures.

WARNING: The pictured reality could put a damper on "contemporary Biker"
self-esteem..... :-)

On Thanksgiving Day, as most of America was watching football, the Weber
household was sitting around talking about bikes. We started looking though my
dad’s old riding photos. These are so great that I had to share some with all
of you…

My dad and some friends were Adventure Riders to the hilt back in the 1950’s.
Sunday rides were the thing for these guys, with the occasional jaunt to Mexico
City or somewhere thrown in for fun. First let’s introduce the characters.
Here's the clan filling up for gas somewhere near Fort Collings, CO. We've got
them from left to right:
Jerry Francis, 1950 Harley 74
Mike Sadusky, 1950 Harley 74
Warren Weber (my dad), 1950 Harley 74
Wendell Rea, 1942 Harley 45 CI. Notice the front knobby!

I guess the 1950 Harley 74 was 'all that', Just like the GS is (supposedly)
these days. Seems pretty popular anyhow...

Here's the 'usual suspects' again taking a morning break on a nice Sunday ride.

One Sunday ride took 'em to the top of Mount Evans, elevation 14,264. This was
back in the day before it was paved all the way to the top. It was, however,
paved here if it hadn't been for the snow. I was recently in a similar situation
on my Rally Twin coming over Pearl Pass. I thought it was touchy enough, and I
didn't have a FOOT CLUTCH!!! Yikes!

Yet another 1952 Sunday ride ventured up Arapahoe Pass - it's near Eldora,
Colorado and is now all wilderness. Stupid lousy rotten environmental freaks,
but I digress… (sigh)

The clan started out from my Dad's house in Wheat Ridge, which is a stone's
throw from Golden, CO. They usually left about 8:00 a.m. If you didn't arrive on
time, they'd leave you. Hard knocks. They headed up to Boulder, CO and followed
the nice, twisty, scenic Boulder Canyon to Nederland. From there they headed
through the town of Eldora and up Arapahoe pass.

Now some things never change. There's always that one person in the group that
either insists that they absolutely positively know where to go, or that it "not
that bad". In this case, the group ended up venturing down this:

Turned out that this the wrong way (DUH!). The Harley guys actually let the
english bike riders be guinea pigs on this part of the ride. Must've been one of
those hot-headed british riding know-it-alls that suggested it in the first
place...

After some back tracking and de-mudding operations, they finally found the right
trail and made it to the top at 11905 feet elevation. Nice day!

I also think these guys could've invented the "No Fear" logo. I have fear when
it associates a 750 lb hard tail with a stream crossing on a trail. These guys
really deserve some respect for being able to pull this off. Or they deserve to
be taken away in straight jackets, I'm not really sure.

Not that they didn't dab once or twice. OK, maybe they dabbed about 100 times,
but they still made it across. Now it's time to take a break and dry out.

Here’s a portrait of my dad taken in 1951, just before the start of a nice
ride. Notice the cool stylish apparel. Helmet? I don't need no stinking helmet!
Of course, this was pre-head injury days....

These guys also had a lot of fun just playin’ around. Imagine getting a couple
feet (OR MORE!) of air on a 750 HARD-TAIL Harley! This makes you GS-jumpers look
like whimps, with your fancy rear suspension and all. Sheesh!

But the most insane (read: talented) member of the group in the area of piloting
a Harley 74(7) through the air was a fellow named Kenny Erie. If Kenny was alive
today and about 50 years younger, I’m sure he’d be one of the top names in
freestyle!

These guys weren't shy of riding on a bit of snow, either. Here's Mike Sadusky
on his 50 Harley. Man, I really envy this guy's legs. I bet he could straddle
the 950 Adventure-S with his knees bent. Me, on the other hand, can't physically
touch both toes to the ground at the same time. Mike used to drape his legs over
the handle bars to stretch on those long road trips (no joking!). Who needs
hiway pegs?

You’d think these guys would know when to stop. Apparently not…

Good thing Mike has those long legs...

These were taken up by my Dad's cabin on Mt Thorodin. Wanna park, but you're too
lazy to put the side stand down? Just cram it in a snow bank and leave it like
my dad did. Mike and Kenny are in the process of “parking”.

These guys were never short of play time. Once again, Mike's extra long legs
save the day. Well, almost.

And again...

You’re not a real rider unless you can power slide…

So, as it goes on Thanksgiving day you’re supposed to think what you’re
thankful for. I’m thankful for my dad being a nutcase in the 1950’s, buying
my brother Wayne and I Z-50’s in the 70s, and riding every chance I get with
my friends and family!

Happy Thanksgiving, all!

Subject: [AMADistrict34] So you think you're a biker...

...now these guys are (chuckle) bikers!

We started looking though my
dads old riding photos. These are so great that I had to share some with all of
you

My dad and some friends were Adventure Riders to the hilt back in the 1950s.
Sunday rides were the thing for these guys, with the occasional jaunt to Mexico
City or somewhere thrown in for fun. First lets introduce the characters.

Stupid lousy rotten environmental freaks,
but I digress (sigh)

Heres a portrait of my dad taken in 1951, just before the start of a nice ride.
Notice the cool stylish apparel. Helmet? I don't need no stinking helmet! Of
course, this was pre-head injury days....

These guys also had a lot of fun just playin around.

If Kenny was alive
today and about 50 years younger, Im sure hed be one of the top names in
freestyle!

These guys weren't shy of riding on a bit of snow, either. Here's Mike Sadusky
on his 50 Harley. Man, I really envy this guy's legs. I bet he could straddle
the 950 Adventure-S with his knees bent. Me, on the other hand, can't physically
touch both toes to the ground at the same time. Mike used to drape his legs over
the handle bars to stretch on those long road trips (no joking!). Who needs
hiway pegs?

Youd think these guys would know when to stop. Apparently not

Good thing Mike has those long legs...

These were taken up by my Dad's cabin on Mt Thorodin. Wanna park, but you're too
lazy to put the side stand down? Just cram it in a snow bank and leave it like
my dad did. Mike and Kenny are in the process of parking.

These guys were never short of play time. Once again, Mike's extra long legs
save the day. Well, almost.

And again...

Youre not a real rider unless you can power slide

So, as it goes on Thanksgiving day youre supposed to think what youre thankful
for. Im thankful for my dad being a nutcase in the 1950s, buying my brother
Wayne and I Z-50s in the 70s, and riding every chance I get with my friends and
family!

Happy Thanksgiving, all!

Washington, DC: Efforts to fight distracted driving move into high
gear. President Obama's administration and federal lawmakers are making it clear
that they are serious about reducing distracted driving on the nation's roads.
In October, Obama signed an executive order banning federal workers from
text-messaging on cell phones while driving government vehicles, U.S.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told federal lawmakers at hearings that he
will work to "raise the awareness (of the dangers of distracted driving) and
sharpen the consequences," and U.S. House and Senate committees held hearings on
the issue.
The U.S. House Subcommittee on Highways and Transit of the Committee
on Transportation and Infrastructure held a hearing on Oct. 29, "Addressing the
Problem of Distracted Driving." At the hearing, LaHood said education and
awareness campaigns are essential for getting people to stop texting or engaging
in other distracting activities while driving.
"We are still researching the effectiveness of combining high-visibility (law)
enforcement with outreach campaigns in the distracted-driving context," LaHood
said. "But we are hopeful that such efforts may prove effective in the same way
that we've been able to use them to reduce drunk driving and increase seatbelt
use."
Riders can contact their U.S. senators and representatives to thank
them for having these hearings on combating distracted driving and urge them to
include the motorcycle community in the ongoing discussions on legislation and
development of technologies. To find contact information for elected officials,
go to the Issues & Legislation section of the AMA's website.

U.S. Senate holds hearing on pro-OHV bill. The U.S. Senate
Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests of the Committee on Energy and Natural
Resources, chaired by Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), recently held a hearing to
receive testimony on various bills, including H.R. 689.
Introduced by Rep. Wally Herger (R-Calif.), H.R. 689 would reduce
unnecessary bureaucracy for OHV enthusiasts looking to use the Chappie-Shasta
OHV Area near Redding in Northern California. The AMA supports this bill and
will continue to advocate its passage.

Washington, DC: AMA, others meet with new forest service head. AMA
Government Relations Vice President Ed Moreland and Government Affairs Manager
Royce Wood, along with representatives of various other outdoor recreation
groups, met with new U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell recently to discuss
forest trails.
Specifically, they discussed travel management plans for the
forests, planning efforts related to various uses of forestland, and national
forest policies. "Chief Tidwell seemed genuinely interested in what we had to
say concerning recreational use of the national forests," Moreland said. "We're
hopeful that there will be a lot of collaboration between Forest Service
officials and recreational users of the forests under Tidwell's leadership.
The meeting was held Oct. 15 in Washington, D.C. and was arranged by
Americans for Recreational Access, of which the AMA is a member. Also attending
were representatives of the BlueRibbon Coalition, the Motorcycle Industry
Council (MIC), Specialty Vehicle institute of America (SVIA), Recreational
Off-Highway Vehicle Association, Specialty Equipment Market Association,
Personal Watercraft Industry Association, and American Council of Snowmobile
Associations. The U.S. Forest Service manages roughly 193 million acres of
public lands across 155 national forests and 22 grasslands nationwide.

National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC) OHV
Public Land Advocacy Webinar series registration is now available for fall
sessions. These webinars, interactive web based workshops, are for OHV riders
and anyone interested in OHV land use. They are designed to give riders and land
managers the skills they'll need to keep trails open in their areas. Each
session will be approximately 2-3 hours long, and will be conducted by the same
OHV management experts who conduct NOHVCC's on-site workshops.
The workshop modules were developed in cooperation with the American
Motorcyclist Association, BlueRibbon Coalition, Motorcycle Industry Council,
Off-Road Business Association, Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, and
United Four Wheel Drive Associations.

Montpelier, Vt.: Legislative committee debates proposal to allow
ATVs on state lands. A rule change under consideration at the Agency of Natural
Resources would, for the first time in state history, allow ATVs to establish a
network of legal trails on state-owned lands. The proposal to lift the ATV ban
on state lands has re-ignited a years-old debate about whether ATV's belong on
public forests, fields and mountains.
State officials say the rule is intended to create short "connector"
trails linking segments of a 600-mile network of legal trails created by the
Vermont All-Terrain Vehicle Sportsman's
Association. Committee members deferred a decision until their upcoming Nov.
17th meeting. Questions may be sent via email to: ATVRULE@... or via
mail to: Meghan Purvee, Agency of Natural Resources, 103 South Main Street,

Atlanta, Ga.: The Georgia State Patrol and the Governor's Office of
Highway Safety have announced a new safety education initiative aimed at
reducing the number of motorcycle accidents across Georgia. The project was
announced at the First Army Commander's Motorcycle Safety Rally at Fort Gillem.
Major Mark McDonough, commanding officer of the Georgia State
Patrol, said Georgia State Troopers assigned to the Safety Education Unit would
immediately begin incorporating motorcycle safety information as part of their
safety presentations at schools, civic clubs, and other organizations. The
safety program is also being offered at military facilities across Georgia.
"Educating all drivers is the foundation to build a program that
will reduce the number of deaths on our roads," Major McDonough said. "Our goal
is to make all drivers aware of motorcyclists and educate motorcyclists on the
safe operation of the vehicle."
In Georgia, motorcycle training is available through a course
coordinated by the Georgia Department of Driver Services. If you would like to
schedule a motorcycle safety presentation for a civic group, contact the Georgia
State Patrol Safety Education Unit at 770-229-3422.

Wisconsin Assembly Bill 544, introduced by Asm. Spencer Black
(D-Madison) and Senate Bill 364, introduced by Sen. G. Spencer Coggs
(D-Milwaukee), would prohibit the installation, sale or distribution of wheel
weights or balancing products that contain lead.

Aspen, Colo.: An association of mountain bikers in the Roaring Fork
Valley has formally come out in opposition to the Hidden Gems Wilderness
proposal. Already the focus of numerous state OHV and snowmobile groups,
including the Colorado Off Highway Vehicle Coalition, the proposal would
potentially affect many historically available riding areas.
The Roaring Fork Mountain Bike Association informed part of
Colorado's Congressional delegation recently that it couldn't support the
proposed "Hidden Gems Wilderness "in its current form. The letter was also sent
to the county commissioners in Pitkin, Eagle and Garfield counties.
A wilderness designation prohibits motorized and mechanized vehicles
and uses from public lands. The mountain bike association wants a
slightly lower level of protection used on most of the lands targeted as Hidden
Gems. Those "companion designations" would protect lands from natural gas
development and motorized travel but leave them open to mountain biking.
Advocates from the Wilderness Workshop had previously agreed to seek
a "Wilderness with bikes" designation for an area that includes parts of the
popular Arbaney Kittle Trail between Woody Creek and Basalt. But overall these
wilderness proponents want these areas closed and not available to any form of
wheeled recreation.

San Francisco, Calif.: Bridge Toll Hike Proposed. The Bay Area Toll
Authority (BATA) is considering a toll increase that would most likely include
motorcyclists riding on the seven state-owned Bay Area toll bridges: the
Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael, San
Francisco-Oakland Bay and San Mateo-Hayward bridges. (The toll proposal does not

El Centro, Calif.: Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (ISDRA)
season ramps up with new road, and increased emphasis on safety, the Bureau of
Land Management (BLM) announced recently. Long considered one of the premier
recreational riding areas in the country, the ISDRA offers 118,000 acres of sand
dunes open for OHV use.
ATV riders are reminded that California state law requires that all
ATV riders under 18 years of age possess an ATV safety certificate issued by the
state or be supervised by an adult possessing a certificate. An adult must
supervise all ATV riders under the age of 14. More information regarding the ATV
rider course, including free enrollment, can be found at www.ohv.parks.ca.gov or
by calling the ATV Safety Institute, (800) 887-2887.
All visitors are reminded that a permit is required at the dunes.
They can be purchased from a number of different vendors online, at many local
area stores, as well as at the dunes themselves. Visit
http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/elcentro/recreation/ohvs/isdra.html for the
latest information.

Wasilla, Alaska: Wasilla City Council ponders ATV restrictions. In
response to community requests to address the use of ATVs inside city limits,
the Wasilla City Council recently met to discuss the results of a survey it
conducted on the issue. The survey, which was posted to the city's website on
August 24 and ran for 60 days, received 140 responses to the 10 questions asked.
Questions included age limits, training, education, registration and
identification required to operate ATVs. Of those responding, 70 percent
identified themselves as ATV owners. The majority of respondents were between
the ages of 30 and 60 years old, and almost all live in the city limits or the
greater Wasilla area.

Shanghai, China: U.S. seeks help on drywall, ATV standards
compliance. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Inez Tenenbaum
said that the CPSC delegation to China, which included a representative from the
MIC/SVIA, was updating the Chinese side on U.S. regulations. One of them was the
Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act or CPSIA, which took effect in August
2008 and imposes heavy fines for violation of rules meant to protect children
from lead (which can cause irreversible brain damage).
The talks were mainly devoted to new mandatory safety standards for ATVs. "In a
global economy, with goods coming from all over the world, it's important that
we have clear standards that we can enforce on imports," she said.

Husqvarna Motorcycles North America sponsoring AMA
Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is pleased to
announce that Husqvarna Motorcycles North America has signed on as a sponsor of
the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony this Dec. 5 at the Hard Rock
Hotel & Casino Las Vegas.

"We are thrilled to have Husqvarna's participation in the
AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony," said AMA Special Events and
Marketing Director Tigra Tsujikawa. "With a lineage dating back more than a
century, this historic marque's motorcycling history runs very
deep."

Husqvarna Motorcycles North America Sales and Marketing
Director Scot Harden, an accomplished off-road racer who was inducted into the
AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2008, said that the company is proud to recognize
the achievement of motorcycling's heroes.

"For a company like Husqvarna, the history of our great
sport and the pioneers who laid the foundation for its success share more than
just a casual connection," Harden said. "The name Husqvarna is synonymous with
two-wheeled champions and heroes. We are proud to have played a major role in
the
growth in popularity of off-road recreation that started in the '60s and
continues through today. It's only fitting that we step up and support the AMA
and the Hall of Fame Museum to help ensure that the proud legacy of the
motorcycling community has a fitting home that will inspire future generations
of motorcyclists. This is why we support the Hall of Fame and will continue to
do so for years to come."

The 2009 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is
part of a larger celebration at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas that
includes the AMA Racing Championship Banquet and the 2009 AMA Motorcycle Hall
of Fame Concours d'Elegance, which will feature some of the most beautiful
motorcycles in existence.

The racing banquet will kick off the festivities on the
evening of Dec. 4. It will recognize the champions from 2009 AMA Racing premier
events and series. In addition, special awards, such as the AMA Racing Athlete
of the Year, the AMA Racing Sportsman of the Year and the AMA Racing Female
Rider of the Year, will be awarded.

Following the Concours d'Elegance on Saturday, Perry King,
legendary actor of stage, screen and TV, will serve as master of ceremonies as
the AMA officially welcomes the 2009 class to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

This year's inductees are industry innovator Robert Bates,
off-road racer Randy Hawkins, suspension pioneer Gilles Vaillancourt,
off-highway rights activist Mona Ehnes, industry entrepreneurs and
technological trailblazers Geoff and Bob Fox, longtime motorcycle safety
proponent David Hough, noted race team manager Gary Mathers and successful
dirt-track racer and tuner Chuck Palmgren.

Advance ticket purchase is required for both evening events at a cost of
$49 per person per single event, or $89 per person for both events. Tickets
will remain on sale through Nov. 29. Admission to the Hall of Fame autograph
session and the Concours d'Elegance bike show is free. For more information,
visit AmericanMotorcyclist.com/LetsRock.

of Fame.

Additionally, in our efforts to go green, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum
is initiating more environmentally friendly business practices. This year’s

selection online and order from a secure website.

Our online program will provide you faster service, and at no additional cost
