This group is the Alabama chapter of HEARTS - Homeschoolers Educating, Assisting, & Reaching-out Through Service, begun in New Jersey by a homeschooling activist named Michele Pulis. This program encourages homeschooling families to get involved and to help make a difference. H.E.A.R.T.S.' purpose is to unite a very diverse group of homeschoolers in community service projects; and to generate increased public awareness, understanding, and acceptance of homeschoolers and homeschooling as a single focus - unrelated to any other issue.
We are sponsored by the North Alabama Home Educators support group (http://NorthAlabamaHomeEducators.freeservers.com), based in Huntsville. Alabama-HEARTS will use the national H.E.A.R.T.S. monthly schedule of projects at http://www.H-E-A-R-T-S.org to start with and then add in our own as our group grows. The local recipient(s) for each month's project will be voted on and posted to this list. You are encouraged to also join the national list: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/H-E-A-R-T-S
“Nationwide, homeschoolers consistently become involved in community outreach as part of their daily learning. The organization called H.E.A.R.T.S. was recently created in an effort to capitalize on this volunteer spirit by coordinating efforts – reaching beyond the barriers of religion, politics, educational philosophy, and distance.”
