Hello Everyone,
My name is Yared. I joined this group a while back, but nothing has happened
since then. Even though these are little introduction, they are better than
nothing. At least now, I know there people interested in positive discussion
here.
I am not a journalist or anything like that; actually I am a computer
engineering student at california state university chico. I am from Africa, and
I always wondered why Africa is not covered in the news media as it should be,
and the only thing I can think of is because we don't have well organized media,
so I searched for a group that talks about Africa and media and I landed here.
I am still interested in finding out about the black media. How it can be
improved, what needs to be done...etc...etc....
Well, that was my little introduction.
Peace
Yared

Hi,
I joined the group because I am interested in Black Media. I feel that
currently the programming is improving but lacks the content that is
necessary to inspire and improve our youth. I am appalled that media would
allow Blacks to be cast in such a negative way, and displayed with lyrics
that are tainted with vulgarity and consider it to be harmless to our
society.
Though I am not in the communications industry presently, I am intrigued by
it. Currently, my background is very diverse, I am currently enrolled in
school to become a Registered Nurse, however I am pursuing communications as
my second major.
My interest include: nursing, communications, Internet, computers, and
writing.
Because of the tremendous impact of the internet on our lives, I feel that a
degree in communications, and computers would only be an assets to my
nursing career.
Currently I reside in a small Southern Town.

Hi Debra!
What an interesting name. I joined the group out of curiosity because I
wanted to communicate with other African Americans who have an interest in
Black media. I guess we're finding out the group/list is what we make it
because there doesn't seem to be any heavy discussions going on.
OK, so let's get started!
I am an old veteran Communications major who grew up in Ohio and was educated
chiefly in southern California. I've recently returned to the Midwest here in
Chicago to do some graduate work at the University of Illinois. While I'm
waiting for my one year of state residency to kick in, I'm pursuing a second
BA in broadcast journalism at Columbia College-Chicago.
So, I'm reacquainting myself with the profession and I'm loving it.
And you?...
Hi Ed,
I'm Debra. I joined AFMEDIA a week ago. I am hoping to learn through my
experience.
Well, I guess it's your turn to give a reply. I promise to keep in touch.
Later,
Debra

Greetings, Brothers/sisters and friends...
My name is Yared Negussie. I am a computer engineering student at Chico
state university. originally, I am from Eritrea: the newest nation in
Africa. Eritrea is about the size of England. Eritrea liberated itself
after 30 years of long war from Ethiopia. The civil war coasted about
60,000 Eritreans life.
During independence, Eritreans enjoyed 7 years of freedom we longed for,
freedom we paid 60,000 of lives for. The economy started to pick up. The
world started to praise this small nation's fast economical growth.
Eritrean government quickly introduced its philosophy of self reliance,
which didn't find many fans in the west, nevertheless, Eritrea continued
its policy. New York Times, Washington Post, National Geography and Time
magazine all wrote articles about the presidents of Eritrea and Ethiopia.
They called the leaders "hope of Africa". (many articles can be found on
the archives of BBC). The policy that Eritrea followed after freedom came
home was "forgive and forget" We forgive what happened before
independence, we forgive the suffering, beating, rape and everything the
then Ethiopian government committed to our people. We started
concentrating on the development of Eritrea.
Seven years later, our hope crashed, we were caught with surprise. The two
friendly countries Ethiopia, and Eritrea found themselves in war. The
bloodshed started, people died left and right. about 50,000 people from
both sides have been believed to be killed in this war. 60,000 + Eritreans
were deported from Ethiopia in totally inhuman manner. The war so far has
been called, the stupidest war of the century, the senseless war (I and may
Eritreans also share the same view on this one), Africa's first high tech
war etc...etc..
After thirty long years of war, it was clear that Eritreans and Ethiopians
were clearly tired of war, yet the war continued. Ethiopia continued
deporting Eritreans and Ethiopians of Eritrean origin. Their property was
confiscated, the pride taken away from them. Human right was grossly
violated. Amnesty international condemned the deportation of Eritreans,
and Ethiopians of the Eritrean origin. ICRC condemned it too, yet the
Ethiopian government decided to give their objection a deaf ear. Ethiopia
committed crime, violating the international laws.
We asked the the international community to get involved and use their
power to intervene and stop this bloody war, but instead they chose to give
one side aid. The media decided not to print anything about the war since
it won't generate any money for them. Only few cngressmen/women have
decided to share our views. Eritreans has come to believe the public and
not the government of the America would do anything about the peace in
Africa. We have come to believe the American tax payers need to know that
their money is being sent to countries who have engaged in committing war
crimes and gross vilation of human rights, so I went on the internet
searching for news groups, and mailing lists where I would likely want my
case to be heared and I reached to this mailing list. Below you will find
the facts about the war, I hope everyone will look at these facts and take
actions on inquiring about the war. I hope you will appeal to your
congressmen and women, senators and law make!
rs for America to intervene and stop this bloody war, for economic
sanctions be placed on Ethiopia (since Ethiopia has rejected the plan now),
and stop the unfair mass punishment by stopping and cutting aid to Eritrea,
while the fact remainls Eritrea has accepted the drafted peace proposals
without any ifs and buts.
United states clearly and officially stated that "OAU Peace Proposal" that
the United Nation stands behind, without a doub is a firm and just
proposal. As recent as Novemeber 9, 1999, at Stanford University, Cubberly
Auditorium, Palo Alto, Dr. Susan E. Rice, Assistant Secretary of State for
African Affairs stted "the United Sttes believes theat the current Peace
plan that the United Nations stands behind is indubitably a just proposal".
Last week on December 6th the Ethiopian government has rejected the peace
plan. The Ethipian Prime minister Meles Zenawi, did this in a rare
interview with state television.
Below you will find facts about the confilict and sites where you can find
relialble news and information about Eritrea.
Facts of the Eritrean-Ethiopian Conflict:
July 1997:
Ethiopia crossed border area and occupied a village called Adi-Murug.
Ethiopia gives an excuse " we are in a hot pursuit to destroy groups
opposing our government ".
Eritrea responded to resolve the issue through bilateral committee.
October 1997:
Ethiopia issued an illegal map that incorporates some parts of Eritrean
land as its own.
May 6 1998:
Ethiopian troops shot and killed Ertitrean officers in Badme who come to
discuss matters of why Eritrean peoples have being harassed at the border.
That provoked a series of clashes with both parties building their troops.
May 13 1998:
The Ethiopian parliament declares war on Eritrea.
June 5 1998:
Ethiopia bombed Asmara airport on the capital of Eritrea. Eritrea
retaliated with the same action.
US and Rwanda introduces a peace proposal to resolve the conflict.
OAU and UN endorsed the peace initiatives.
Ethiopia accepted the peace agreement. Eritrea ask for clarifications
While Eritrea awaits response of clarifications from the OAU, Ethiopia
unleashes a major attack on Eritrea. 50,000 young people are feared dead on
these battles.
Eritrea accepted peace Proposal in February of 1999.
Ethiopia has so far deported around 70,000 Eritreans and Ethiopians of
Eritrean origin. In recent deportation, Ethiopia ignored the call and
warning from international Red Cross and deported 1,300 Eritreans through
dangerous battlefronts filled with mines. US action to this matter has
being nothing but " we are concerned of the situation"
Ethiopia is still rejecting the technical arrangements drawn by OAU, which
is set to execute the peace proposal accepted already by both parties.
Eritrea accepted the peace proposal and the technical arrangements its
entirely
USA still aiding Ethiopia with Millions of dollars for food and education
proposes while the government of Ethiopia spends one million dollar a day
to arm its troops.
More than 500000 people are displaced from their home from both countries
to save their lives.
Another 500000-troop face each other day and night for the last 18 months
while the world leave resolutions is implemented through the OAU peace
process.
Background and short history:
For political reasons, the United Nation federated Eritrea with Ethiopia in
1952. In the years to follow, Ethiopia, who was then ruled by an Emperor,
would systematically dismantle the Eritrean assembly, parliament and remove
the Eritrean flag and strip Eritreans of their nation. This has been
referred to as "neighbor's Colonialism". Eritreans began their armed
struggle in 1961 to regain their freedom. For 30 years Eritreans faced
tremendous sacrifices and suffered insurmountably. After Eritrea totally
defeated Ethiopia in 1991, it made an agreement with the new Ethiopian
government and the United Nation to let its own people choose their
destiny. Eritreans were to decide whether to stay with Ethiopia or have
their own country. 99.8% of the people of Eritrea, decisively and legally
voted for Eritrea to be an independent nation.
The current Ethiopian government, Tigrayan Regime, came to power in 1991
with the aid of Eritrea. The Tigrayan people were also waging war to
overcome oppression from Ethiopia, during the 30-year struggle for
independence. During the struggle both the current Eritrean and Ethiopian
governments (Tigrayan Regime) helped each other to topple the common enemy
in Ethiopia. They did so and succeeded. However, after independence, both
Eritrea and Ethiopia did not demarcate the border between them. People
traveled freely between these two countries and enjoyed the freedom.
Cause of the Conflict:
The current Ethiopian government, the Tigryan Regime, is currently running
Ethiopia; geographically they came from an Ethiopian northern province
called Tigrai, which is bordered with Eritrea. The Tigrayan people that are
now equipped with power have been the oppressed minority for centuries.
They have struggled and overcome oppression from Ethiopia in 1991
along-side Eritrea. Since independence, they have been building the
infrastructure of their respective province, Tigrai economically and
expanding it by scraping lands from their neighbor provinces i.e. Wollo,
Gondar and also a bordered sovereign country, Eritrea.
The Tigryan Regime started violating Eritrean sovereignty by crossing their
common border and disrupting the Eritrean inhabitant's life at the border
and by dismantling their administration in July 1997. The Eritrean
government voiced its concerns and proposed to set up a bilateral committee
to resolve this issue. The issue was dragged out until May 6, 1998, which
is the date that the Tigryan Regime coldly murdered 6 Eritrean officers,
which forced Eritrea to swiftly react, and became the beginning of yet
another all out war.
Where The Conflict Stands now:
Eritrea has undeniably accepted a peace proposal that was drafted by the
United States, O.A.U. and the U.N. However, Ethiopia has rejected the
peace plan.

this whole message seems kinda dodgy. Is this a meme or is this real? Democracy
goes a lot deeper that the definitition and is after all an ideology. A problem
with democracy is that every minority group feels that they have to be heard,
and scream oppression and snobbery if their demands are not met. I am
particulary worried about what "moral fibre" of civil rights mean in your
context.
The War on Culture (ie Drugs) ???? what does this mean? War on drug culture?
What is the list's general opinion about the war on drugs? The fact that people
are uninformed about the use and possible negative and positive effects of drugs
makes it far dangerous.
As for the war on culture, well, I have to agree, kick over your TV.

On 11/28/99 Tom Lowry Reported in USA Today the most horrifing words ever,
the IRS has Declared War on White Collar Americans for investing in Trusts
for their children.
At this point on everyone is at equal odds for having a Waco ATF, IRS Tax
Rais in their back yard, or worse yet in their front yard.
Information has been compiled and organized by countless volunteer hours
for American to over come the government oppression, and Tyranical
Polticians, and to again enjoy our infeasible, inalienable, civil
liberties.
Democracy defined is Government for the People by the people through equal
representation. It is the system in which Supreme Power is retained by the
people. It also carries the very moral fiber of civil rights; Belief in the
practice of Social Equality, with an absence of Snobbery.

This letter has been sent in response to wilpf WTO stance:
Dear Lohes,
Thank you for the memo. It is great that the WILPF is taking such a firm
stance in our struggle with the WTO.
It seems that if we cut Trade out of the global picture indigenous peoples
could use there land for food and the economics and monetary influences that
kill people in countries that money has no importance
in, we would all be better off.
Perhaps at the Corporate Trials in Seattle many of the issues will be brought
to the negotiation tables.
It seems odd to me that the US can tax their citizens, and in turn the
politicians and the over sized government, use this money, $269 Billion for
National defense. This is clearly taxation without representation.
When one takes a look at Kosovo, Columbia and elsewhere, a sane person should
say, Defense of what. The socio-economic picture in the US is no better than a
3rd world country as homelessness and addiction are epidemic.
The citizens of the US are organized and well educated, fearing for the loss
of their soveriegnty as the powers that be are swaying towards Marshall Law and
International Court. The people of the US do not want this. Our War veterans
died for our freedom, liberty, the preservation of the US Constitution, and our
Civil Liberties.
These are being threatened now by the gross neglect of our Politicians and
government agencies. They disgrace the American people by spying on other
countries, and oppressing the US population.
Many of our organization speak for our rights loudly, however our voices fall
on the deaf ears of self centered, self seeking politicians and agencies with
the conscience of intentional malice.
All while less than 1% of the US budget is spent on development and
humanitarian aid. For instance, more money is being spent and offered up for
the 2002 Olympics in Utah, than the G-7 has offered to Belgarus, and
Chernobyl. This is while Utah is under a police-state, as was Vietnam.
The word Humanitarian has no definition or influence in the US political
arena.
More organizing amongst the diverse US population is happening at a pace that
US Congress cannot possibly keep up with. The majority of US Citizens are fed
up with the intentional torts inflicted upon
them by ignorant politicians and the lobbyist that pad the politicians pockets
with what is essentially blood money.
In our diverse but unified effort we are determined to see justice served and
our civil liberties reinstated.[end]
It is my conclusion that our voices will not be heard by the deaf ears of the
US congress, the government agencies, or the United Nations, unless we unite our
diverse communities and demand that politicians serve us and not the corporate
lobbyist they are bribed by. Over 1.5 million dollars a day pass through the
hands of congress alone.
The Black Panther's Ten Point Platform is the only true and honest platform
in US politics for the people and by the people.
http://www.afroam.org/history/Panthers/10point.html
And is the desired platform of most Americans under the age of 35, as well as
the generation of the 60's. It is the voice of and stance of the oppressed and
abused, which in the 90's, includes even the upper middle class. The Panthers
have been tainted by the American press and government. A point that needs to
made clear is that yes the Panthers are Pro-Black, and encourage all races to
be Pro-Self, with the same dignity and pride that Martin Luther King Jr. taught.
http://www.afroam.org/history/Panthers/panther-lead.html
It is time for US citizens and citizens of other countries as well to exert
our human rights and demand them from the government, and politicians. This is
a perfect time in the year 1999 as we commemorate one of the most evil crimes of
the US Government, COINTEL-PRO, the governments crime against the Black
Panther Party.
http://www.afroam.org/history/Panthers/Cointel/Cointel.html
One can read the US government documentation, the murders of many members of the
Black Panther Party by the FBI and other government agencies:
http://www.icdc.com/~paulwolf/copap5b.htm
December 4, 1999, will be the 30th anniversary of one of the worst attempts
to oppress the black community in the history of the US. The Black Panther
Party was founded by Huey Newton, and Bobby Seale, two of the most educated
young black men. Huey Newton was murdered August 22, 1989, after years of being
tormented by the federal government, by a low level drug dealer. Information
about Bobby Seale in the 90's can be found at his home page:
http://www.bobbyseale.com/
In the modern history of the US, upper class white males have dictated to the
masses. Handing out welfare in pity, judging alternative medicines given to us
by indigenous people of the globe, and declaring war upon our cultures,
ultimately leading to genocide of many races, including blacks, and native
Americans, through taxation without representation.

The US political network and government agencies have literally stolen
tax-payers money. By means of undeclared conflicts such as Vietnam and Kosovo,
US politicians have violated United States Constitutional Law. The Drug War is
the latest political crime against citizens of the US and affects the
indigenious peoples of South America.
We the People will no longer stand by while lobbyist, PACS, and bribed
politicians murder our families through neglect and disrespect of human life.
We, as a people, understand our Constitutional Rights. A loud and clear message
is therefore being sent to these men: Politicians are elected to serve the
people through representation, Police Officers work for the people. Police are
not the government, nor do they work for the government, they have a job to
protect every citizen. We demand an end to police brutality, as it has hit a
new low by beating women and children, as was the case April 19, 1999 in Salt
Lake City, Utah.
http://www.angelfire.com/ut/CivilRightsvSLC/index.html
Countless hours of effort have gone into contacting congress in order to tell
them how "We the People" want them to vote. However, the bogus politicians, are
to busy with lobbyist and corporate representatives, to even open and read their
email personally. So as predicted, the CTBT was not ratified, minimum wage was
not raised, Orin Hatch and his fellow crooked politicians filibuster childrens
lifes away. Need we remind these men that every 2.5 seconds a child under 5
dies of a hunger related disease, and it is obvious it is the politicians who
have the blood of these children on their hands. And yet the US Judiciary, and
the US Drug Czar McCaffey have time to stick their unwanted noses into
everything from drug testing Olympic athletes, to negotiating the price of their
"legal" drugs such as was the case of Claritin. So we literally pay these men
to deem themselves "legal" drug dealers.
The people of this nation as well as other do not and will not stand for
this maladministrative government any longer. Reforms are to made quickly, and
immediately. Need we remind President Clinton of his statement in 1992 on MTV
"the Constitution is a radical document…it is the job of the government to rein
in peoples rights."
Our demands to the government are the same as they were in the 60's. And it
is expected they be met by the year 2000. If they are not qualified to do the
work in order to meet them, they should resign from there positions. The
definition of governing is to oversee and control, one does not manage this by
throwing free minded able bodies into prison. Reform is being called for. Once
again I will quote Martin Luther King Jr "Let us make our intentions crystal
clear. We must be and we will be free. We want freedom now…We do not want
freedom fed to us in teaspoons over the next 150 years. Under God we were born
free. Misguided men robbed us of our freedom. We want it back."
Politicians must know we are unified in our diversity and we will no longer
let the legacy of J. Edgar Hoovers "No messiah" fight against each other. The
factions are perfectly clear that government agencies are the agitators, and
instigators of hate between us.

Salt Lake City Utah has taken a time warp back in time as the City prepares to
defend itself in the Civil Rights Law suit of Claudia K. White v Salt Lake City
Corporation. Attorney for Claimant: Gregory
W. Stevens
http://WWW.GWSLAW.COM
The lawsuit is being filed under the Klu Klux Klan Act of 1964, Title VII,
Section 42 United states code 1983, which states, "under the color of the Law" a
Political
Official cannot deprive a United States Citizen of their Constitutional Rights.
The Corporate Olympic Scandal involving, Senator Orin Hatch, Governor Mike
Leavitt, Mayor Deedee Corradini, and Police Chief
Rubin Ortega, the illegal Olympic tasks forces of the Pioneer Park Liberty Park,
and Boyer Inc. to name a few has failed at its efforts to culturally cleanse
SaltLake City. The peaceful, yet firm stance
of Salt Lake City Residence, and academic community are conveying the confidence
reminiscent of the social tone of the 1960's Civil Rights Movement.
Olympic Scandal
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Lair/6256/SocIssues/Olyscan.html
Salt Lake City Political Officials obviously do not or can not comprehend
what the deprivation of Civil Liberties actually means to a United States
citizen, or the severity of the crime committed by the act
Of police brutality under the "color of " Law. The breaking of civil rights has
historically been proven to cause poverty, and homelessness to any race.
To quote the late great Martin Luther King, Jr. "We come humbly to say to the
men in the for front of our government that the Civil Rights issue isnot an
ephemeral, evanescent domestic issue that can be kicked about by reactionary
guardians of the status quo; it is rather an eternal moral issue which may well
determine the destiny of our nation in the ideological
struggle with Communism. The hour is late. The clock of destiny is ticking
out. We must act now, before it is too late." As a nation, we must have the
"audacity" now to make Dr. Kings dream come true.
The modern history of Civil Rights is alive and well in Salt Lake City and
the Voices of Freedom under protection of the United States Constitution, and
Academic Freedom cannot be silenced by Legally under any Law in the United State
of America. One can reflect upon the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's at the
Redwood Campus Of Salt Lake City Community College November 15-19, 1999. Salt
Lake Community College, ironically, of which, ironically Ms. White is part of
the Alumni.
The Salt Lake Community College Student Association club BACCHUS,(Boosting
Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health Of UniversityStudent), is sponsoring
Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. BACCHUS is
joining the nation in support of "National Homeless Awareness Week".
Shack City, located on the Redwood Campus will aid the students and other
participants to remember the civil rights efforts of Jessie Jackson and the
Black Community, Resurrection City. The student body is hosting a
"2Nites"without a home on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Cardboard houses will
be
assembled throughout the day. These boxes will be covered with statics, such as:
"Less than 1% of the United States Budget is spent on Development
and Humanitarian Aid". "Every 2 and a half seconds a child dies from hunger
related disease, thats 34,000 children a day."
Although 2Nites outside can in no way simulate
homelessness, or Resurrection City, the activity will raise awareness of
theeveryday conditions that many people face. Donations of coats and jackets
will go towards preparing the students for the cool November nights.
Please join the Student Body and Alumni of Salt Community College in
peaceable assembly of "Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week". BACCHUS is
accepting donations for the local shelters. Containers
are located oncampus, next to the scarecrows, with signs reading: I'm hungry,
I'm Cold, and Hungry Please help. BACCHUS can be reached @ 1-801-957-4268.
During the National Homeless Awareness week everyone is encourage to aid the

Dear DRCNet supporter:
Over 400,000 nonviolent drug offenders crowd our
nation's prisons. Michigan Senator Spencer Abraham is
trying to make things even worse by sneaking an
amendment that would dramatically increase penalties
for low-level cocaine offenders into an unrelated bill
on bankruptcy law. Congress may vote on the Abraham
amendment as soon as tomorrow (Tuesday 11/9), and your
action is needed to stop it!
Please visit http://www.drcnet.org/justice/ to send a
free e-mail or fax to Congress and learn more about
the Abraham amendment and mandatory minimum drug
sentencing. Our system now has the capacity to let you edit the
text of your letter, not just add comments to the end as before.
You will also find a "tell a friend" page on the site; please use
it to bring more supporters of justice to our web site to write
Congress on this issue, or forward this alert. Last but not least,
before you hit the submit button, please write down your Senators'
phone numbers and follow up your letter with a phone call to make even more
impact.
Please take this small step to help bring
justice back to America.
Visit http://www.famm.org/Abraham%20Alert.htm for more
information on this bill and its implications.
