Normally your agent sales the manuscript to the publisher. There are
agents who negotiate a big sale for you and then there are those who
don't. In Writers Market, and in literaryagents.org, they tell you
what books the agents have sold. Your agent should also give you
helpful advice about promoting your book. It is in her best interest
to have your book succeed once they sell it, so she can end up
negotiating your next deal. Talk with your agent, ask her questions,
find out what she will do for you and what she(or he) expects of you.
Just because you have an agent doesn't mean your manuscript will be
sold.

You say you want advice. That is very good. Have you considered a
publicist. There are small press publicist who will charge for one
time, or will charge you for just a few months. Also being online
with the sister forums is good. There are many african american
websites that will showcase your book. I will tell you more later.
Just don't get caught up in spending too much money. The profit
margin on a book is too low for that. Television shows and radio
shows get many request for appearances. I either got on television
and radio by a friend who recommended me to a friend or now my
publicist, he is getting me a lot of appearances on radio all over
the country. I will give you many list and names later. Today I was
on WHRO Public Television, Hampton Roads, it airs in virginia and
north carolina on April 25. They told me it will probably air 3
additional times. My publicist got that for me.

I just wanted to jump into the discussion on Agents as I have had some
questions regarding them.
I was able, through word of mouth of obtain an agent. I was surprised
at the way it went and I felt so flattered that It was my books
content that drove the agent to want to take me on.
However, all that I'm reading has proven so true. So much of the
success of an author's book (s) still lay in the hands of the author.
Espeically if your agent is one that gives you the freedom to seek
your own way.
I know MY agents role in my literary life, but my question today is
this? As a general state, what should one expect from an agent?
I have books in stores. I have books in local stores in ny and nj. and I have a shipment of books coming to my home this weekend. I have been offered to do a book signing in brooklyn and one in newark. The first book signing was at Nicole's Cafe in bloomfield, nj. and she sold 47 of the 60 books she had in stock that day. the other books were sold over the course of a week. I have been on the Tyrone Chabliss show (an african american cable tv show) and it went very well. I am actually selling books (a few hunred thus far) through the trafford website, and am pleased with the way that aspect of this process is going. My "situation" is getting my information out. I have sold books in tennesee and ohio and north carolina. but I need to really do a marketing / promo blitz. I have posters, I have fliers, postcards and pamphlets with the prelude to the book. all this stuff is in my living room. Tonight my intent is to sit down and figure out how to distribute my promo stuff to start the "buzz"
I would like to do radio shows, but again, i've been getting the shaft from my brothers and sisters in radio. they want me to pay them. and wendy is 1000 for 15 minutes. this is a lot. for me. and as you stated, the check i am receiving shortly (first royalty) is going to be just a smidget more than what I have put out in comp. books and promotional stuff.
I am begging for guidance here. I really am. Now as far as the book is concerned, "when gucci came first" true tales of a tramp has been compared to "the coldest winter ever" and "true to the game" I have been approached by the film producer of Dirty Games for screen play conversion of the book and everyone says the book is very good, they cant believe the stories. they are so real, and I say, thats because they are. The book tells my story, the story of a girl from Mt. Vernon, NY who was fascinated by the lifestyle of the local drug dealers girlfriend. and it talks about rape within the nba and how I put myself in different situations that were unhealthy. the reader doesnt know why until mid book when I drop the bomb about my childhood. Suicide attempts, etc. the book is funny, painful and again, my story.
I hope you read it one day.
again, if you can give me any advice, pleae give feel free, I want to understand the way this "thing" works. I appreciatiate any advice you can offer and please dont sugar coat anything, I can accept critisism and I WELCOME IT. if you feel I am going about this the wrong way, please tell me.
Respectfully,
Mia

$1000 is too much. Even $200 is too much. Radio works best when you have books in the store. They listen to the show and about 10 people will come down and buy the book. If it is a national show, you need to have some way to get them the books nationally. If your books are online, you need to concentrate on ways to get links to your books online. Inexpensive ways. At the $1000 rate, you will "loose your shirt, fast!"
please dont forget me (the radio interview list). Can I just say that I am very grateful for all the advice and direction. I really am!

Try starting your book signings at the black bookstores, they are usually very supportive, sometimes they will give you radio producers to contact in town. All of the book publishing guru's recommend you do a much free stuff as possible. If you start paying, you will quickly find out that you spend more on the marketing than you make on the book. Even the most efficiently produced book has a low profit margin.
So concentrate on your personal email list==>ask them to pass this on, contact radio and television producers direct(ask them if you can send them a media kit and follow-up)==>do a radio show before a booksigning to bring people down to the store. Contact every single black bookstore, and independent bookstore you can drive to, provided your book is not POD, you can contact the major bookstores. Just try to do everything free. Since the book is about my life and the contents are "sensitive" - my mom and brothers after reading it BEGGED me not to use my real name. To be honest with you, I wanted to use my real name. I am not ashamed of the things I have done and I wanted to help people through this book and so I felt like I may not have done the "right" thing with changing my name, but my family asked me not to. I really think it was moreso for their "protection" --people hate to face the truth and there are things in the book that my family were competely unaware of and they felt as though they collectively "failed" in being the support system most families try to be to one another.
In the book I speak candidly about sex, drug abuse, psychotherapy, psychotropics (chemial restraint), sexual abuse (at the hands of my baby sitter and his brothers throughout my childhood - age 10 to 13 - stopped because we moved. and how my mother emotionally abandoned me and my brothers because she was being "herself" - so its a lot for a family to handle. and because the fact "they" had to face my life and what happened to me, they felt unprotected from the public.
Selfish aint it?
So that's why I am writing under kalico jones. The final installment of my stories will be under my REAL name and of course I am trying to do some things with helping survivors of rape, people living with HIV/AIDS, and teenage girls. I am looking to donate a portion of my proceeds to a few organizations
So that's the story. Oh and I took my photo off the cover. a photo of which you could not deduce who I was anyway (at the request of my family).

Mia,
Why don't you use your real name? I am just curious.
I have been reading a lot of posts about sending out queries to get an agent. Have any of the successful authors who are in this forum gotten an agent with a query letter when they were completely unknown? And had no book sales record? I suspect it usually happens the way ReShonda got her's (The Author of My Brothers Keeper). They came to her after she proved she could sell books.
This is why I feel this is true most of the time. I was listening to a book fair workshop on cspan. It was a part of a larger literary fair. The conference was put on by literary agents. This is what they said they MAINLY look for:
1. They look for someone who has given them some indication that they can sell their book with their name. 2. They said they sell authors, not books. 3. They said they would rather take a housewife who has a web site with 50,000 unique visitors, than a college professor who noone knows. The housewife has a built-in sales audience. The book sales industry is fierce, so this is primarily what they look for. 4. They said a lot of authors are still sending manuscripts to publishers, 99.0% of those get tossed in the trash. 5. Literary agents read the manuscripts(or have people who do), then they sale the manuscript or idea to a publisher. The more people know your name, the better chance you have of getting published.
I sent out three query letters just to see the response I would get. I looked in the Writers Market and sent two letters to agents who claimed they published in my genre. I got, "good luck" on my query returned to me. The third actually sent me a letter on her stationary, she said she was looking for the next John Grisham, and she was more interested in making a deal with my website. Anyhow, I got the drift early, and decided to self-publish a quality book with a cover design, interior design, proofreader and editor. I am starting to get some major interest in the book, it sells extremely well.
This is my advice. Be careful with publishers. Many print on demand and expensive vanity press call themselves publishers, but they are just printing books and selling them back to you, very expensively. Many agents have phone numbers, why don't you call in advance, tell them who you are(if your name is unknown), if they are looking in your genre---if they say NO!, you have saved yourself a lot of time and energy. While you are writing queries, also take a lot of time to read and study every self-publishing manual in the library. Even if you don't plan to self-publish you should learn about the industry, knowing how it works is important. But, be forewarned, a lot of the industry facts are NOT published.

My book is currently available through Amazon.com /barnes&noble.com the trafford order desk at: Bookstore@... or 1888-232-4444. I have been writing for over 10 years now. but only small articles and marketing/promotions/sales proposals for different firms.
I am marketing my book through the attached flier - to be distributed all over the tri-state area and north carolina, atlanta, chicago. I am also using attempting to purchase on air time with a major radio personality (she costs 1000 for 15 minutes!) and I am calling local book stores trying to get in store book signings (which is a job in itself).
The reason why I decided to apply for membership to this club is for the advice of my peers and those of whom have been at "this" a lot longer than I have and can give me some direction and professional critisism as far as how I am handling my business of promoting my book and getting to the "next level."
I have been reading some of your emails and feel that I have done the right thing with joining this group and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn.

The event is actually a literacy day event. So you will be talking about promoting literacy and stamping out literacy vs. a book signing. I'll be speaking at a Sams Club in Va Beach and a Walmart in Va Beach on April 12th. I was told that the store managers have the discretion to order the books for the event. You will not be able to bring your own books. They must have an SKU or bar code and had to have been ordered by the stores.
The thing is the store managers won't get the details about the authors participating at their stores until about 2 weeks before the event, so I don't know if they will have enough time to order books, and yes the books must be available in Walmart stores or at Walmart.com.
You all know walmart is having book signings on April 12. Well,
apparently if you have books in walmart.com you can participate. It
is said that walmart.com gets their books from BAMM.com
(booksamillion.com), so if your book is is bamm.com, they should be,
in walmart.com. Getting them in the store is a different story. They
use individual buyers to get them in the stores.
If anyone gets any more information, please let us know.
