My source did some digging and it seems that "$16mill" spent on homeland
security measures since 9/11 is a valid figure:
Okay, here's what I've got. City Mgr Toby Futrell gave the figure of $16M as
the cost of increased security in an address to the League of Women Voters
at a 27 Jan 03 meeting. I checked with the CM office and was referred to
Public Information. PI said there is no text of this address available. I
didn't push the question because I had found in the 2002-2003 proposed
budget, a request for $4.5M for Homeland Defense by the Austin Police Dept.
Based on that one year figure for one command within the police department,
it seems a reasonable extrapolation that approximately $16M was spent from
11 Sept 01 to Jan 03 by all first responder departments.
