Smokers Needed!

Smokers from the Chinese, Vietnamese, Asian Indian, and Korean communities are needed to participate in a 1.5 hour focus group discussion about smoking attitudes and behavior in their respective Asian Pacific American community in the Maryland area. Smokers should be over the age of 18 and can be users of various tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, snuff, pipes, hookah, etc.)

When: Specific dates not yet scheduled, but tentatively a Saturday or Sunday in late July/early-mid August

Where: Location close to the College Park/DC/Metro area

Participants will be compensated $50 for their time and travel.

This project is sponsored by the Tobacco Control Evaluation Program of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

OCA National Convention: Voices for Progress
July 31st – August 3rd
Hilton Washington

The Organization of Chinese Americans is a national organization dedicated to the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans.

Every year OCA hosts a national convention. Part of the convention will feature two days of workshops and discussion geared towards APIA college students. During the two days, students explore leadership, empowerment, and identity within the APIA community. Both days are free and include free meals!

Thursday, July 31st, is a leadership summit, which will be a full day of workshops focused on creating and developing a shared vision, campus organizing and leadership development. It gives student leaders a chance to network with each other and build new skills to take back to campus.

Friday, Aug 1^st is college day, which focuses on media, politics, communication, education, activism, and career choices in the APIA community. Friday also includes a career fair, where you can talk to prospective employers from fortune 500 companies to non-profits to government agencies.
