- GOD'S WORLD NEWS (KIDS' NEWSPAPERS AND POSTERS)

I have the past two years worth (49 issues!) of News Current for 4th - 5th
graders, and one year (26 issues!) of Taking Off, for 2nd - 3rd graders. These
are weekly flyers similar to Weekly Reader, however they have a Christian slant
to them and are much more wholesome. While some of them deal with current events
(which have already happened), they all have very interesting columns, pictures,
stories, thought-provoking ideas and questions. I'd hate to just throw them out,
because there's so much to offer someone who hasn't used them yet. Also included
with these are 13 large folded posters, dealing with various geography / social
studies / history / science issues. All of these together cost me $66, but I
found them to be worth it! I am asking $7. (That's just over .10 an issue.)

FS: Character Building & Religious Studies

I have four books in this series:

- CONCORD CUNNINGHAM: THE SCRIPTURE SLEUTH 1 (by Mat Halverson)

- CONCORD CUNNINGHAM: THE SCRIPTURE SLEUTH 2 (by Mat Halverson)

- CONCORD CUNNINGHAM: THE SCRIPTURE SLEUTH 3 (by Mat Halverson)

- CONCORD CUNNINGHAM: THE SCRIPTURE SLEUTH 4 (by Mat Halverson)

From an online source: "Concord Cunningham solves mysteries! These delightful
books are full of fun mysteries that you participate in solving. After Concord
has asked all his questions and heard all the facts, there is usually something
that sounds familiar. Like something else he has heard before. That's when he
gets out his trusted Bible, looks at his concordance (hence his name!), and
finds the answer to the mystery! The best part is that he doesn't give you the
answer right away. He just gives you the scripture reference so you can look up
the verses and see if you can solve the mystery on your own! After you think you
have it all figured out you can flip to the back to read the solution to the
mystery! The mysteries, written by Mathew Halverson, are very creative and
tricky! There are twelve mysteries in each book. At the back, there are also
some great tips on how to use your own concordance to solve your own mysteries
in life."

On a personal note, my 13 year old has used these books during the past couple
of years, and read them aloud to me as part of his speech therapy (he still has
trouble making certain sounds). These have been, by far, the books which he's
looked forward to reading the most, and even though he disliked reading out
loud, he still wanted to read more than my one a day limit! Wish there were more
of 'em! These books are all in excellent, like new condition. The pages are
still stiff, no tears, bends, writing, etc) I'm asking $5 each.

~~~~~~~~
- PEARABLES CHARACTER BUILDING KINGDOM STORIES
I have three books in this series. These are all stories to help build up a
child's character and are for all ages. They've even given me some
thought-provoking insights. I have more information about each story in each
book, should you like me to send them to you... These books are all in
excellent, like new condition. The pages are still stiff, no tears, bends,
writing, etc. Each is workbook-sized, with 128 pages. Beautiful black/white
pictures.) Below is a list of the books, with a brief description of each story.
I do have more information on the stories, should you request it of me. I'm
asking $12 each.
- PEARABLES CHARACTER BUILDING KINGDOM STORIES, VOLUME 1 ~ $12
Stories in this volume include:
THE GOVERNOR'S PLOT (Home school or Home Training) The Governor's Plot is a
story about a wicked governor who desired that all the people in the land would
follow his ways rather than the One True King's. he develops schools where the
children can learn to read and write... but, they learn to read HIS principles
and then forsake the true King's. A MUST for those who are home schooling or are
interested in home educations.
THE HOUSE THE WORLD BUILT (Public Education) This is a rhyme set in a modern era
that shows that mothers are now leaving their children in search of treasures
the world gives because this is what public education has trained them to do!
THE ALCHEMIST (Women & Children at Home) The Alchemist is about a strange that
came to the Kingdom and brought a little silver bottle whose contents changed
the women in the land. What is an Alchemist? You'll find out at the end of the
book! (Does not contain any magic or things offensive to believers.)
THE VIEWING BOX (Television and Entertainment) The Viewing Box tells about a
foreigner coming into the Kingdom to sell little boxes of views. The people all
are mesmerized by their viewing boxes until the King rescues them from their
folly!
YOU CAN'T SHOOT THE BEARS! (Animal Rights?) This is a story that portrays what
can happen if you give animals rights that God never ordained!
THE NEW COMMAND (Loving Others) The New Command is based on the story of the
King commanding people to LOVE one another. You will be surprised at what they
do to obey Him in this!
THE CONQUERED VILLAGE (Denying the World) Some people in the land want to bring
foreigners into the Kingdom by becoming like the foreigners. The King has some
interesting things to say about this.
- PEARABLES CHARACTER BUILDING KINGDOM STORIES, VOLUME 2 ~ $12
Stories in this volume include:
THE KING'S REQUEST (Perseverance) When the King asks for an elderly gentleman to
complete an impossible task, the man completes it with wisdom that only comes
from the King and with age!
THE GOAL (Work) This story will show how work is a great thing, not a negative
thing!
THE LOVE OF THE KING (Obedience) This is a story about a boy who questions why
he must obey the laws of the King. He finds out soon enough that the reason the
King laid down rules to follow was for his own good and protection!
THE BICYCLE (Materialism vs. Responsibility) Two brothers each get a new
bicycle, but attitudes arise that show how idolatry concerning material objects
can emerge without anyone even becoming aware of it. A great story that deals
fairly with the issue of materialism.
THE GOVERNOR'S REVENGE (Socialization) When the governor's plan failed in
regards to having all the people attend his schools he sets forth another one...
He claims that all the children in the land must "socialize" in order to be
"normal"!
THE JOURNEY (Following God, Not Men) Learning to follow the ways of the majority
is not necessarily the way of God.
THE MAN OF THE KING (Relationship with God) This is a story about a man who pays
someone else to teach his children about the King rather than doing so himself!
THE MESSENGER (Regarding Outward Appearances) A stranger comes who is an
ambassador in disguise!
- PEARABLES CHARACTER BUILDING KINGDOM STORIES, VOLUME 3 ~ $12
Stories in this volume include:
I'LL ALWAYS HAVE TOMORROW (Procrastination) This story will encourage all ages,
both old and young, to enjoy each moment that the Lord gives us and to take time
for the simple things in life before they are gone tomorrow.
THE KITE (Blaming Others for our Own Mistakes) This poem encourages children to
confess their own sins and admit it when they make mistakes rather than pointing
at others and claiming that THEY made them do it...
THE FISHERMAN (Being Fishers of Men) A father hopes to train his child so he
will be able to serve the King. When the King encourages the father to teach the
boy how to fish, this lesson not only helps the boy but can help ANYONE who is a
believer in the Lord Jesus Chris!
THE BABY COW (Contentment) Two twin boys each have very unique personalities...
Let this story encourage your children to follow the one who is content in
whatever situation he finds himself.
THE TREASURE (True Riches) The King tells the people of the land to spend their
lives searching for treasure they can bring into the Kingdom...
ONE LITTLE WEED (Hidden Sin) What happens when you let one little weed go
without pulling it up by the roots?
THE GENTLE WARRIOR (Speaking the Truth in Love) How a warrior for the King
learns how to conquer people and bring them into the Kingdom!
~~~~~~~~

IN GOD WE TRUST: STORIES OF FAITH IN AMERICAN HISTORY

(Elementary through junior high ages) Down through our nation's history, men and
women have taken a stand for right. They came seeking religious freedom and
found that their faith in God played a role in many life-changing decisions - in
discovering new territories, in setting up new governments, in establishing what
was fair and just for all. These are their stories... presented using factual
information in a fun and lively way. Each narrative story highlights a person in
history, focusing on how that person's faith n God played an important part in
the development of America. Christopher Columbus, Abigail Adams, Daniel Webster,
Abraham Lincoln, William Penn, Paul Revere, Patrick Henry. George Washington,
Benjamin Franklin, Francis Scott Key, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Clara
Barton are but a few of the 50 people highlighted. This is a hardbound book, in
excellent, like new condition. Colorful pictures; 224 pages, including a
glossary and bibliography. ~ $7

~~~~~~~~
JENNIE'S WAR: THE HOME FRONT IN WORLD WAR ll (by Bonnie Hinman)
(Grades 3-7) Jennie is helping the war effort. The Seattle ten-year-old is using
a hoe to win WWll - she's growing vegetables in a "Victory Garden" on the vacant
lot she and her brother once used as a baseball field. But serving a larger
cause sometimes demands sacrifice, and Jennie's willing to do whatever it takes
to see the war ended. Soon, though, her war efforts take on a darker hue when
she suspects a new man in her neighborhood may be a spy. What can such a young
girl do?
Softbound, 138 pages. Book is brand new and in perfect condition. (I bought two
by mistake and only need one for my own this school year.) ~ $3.50
~~~~~~~~

EASY GRAMMAR 3/4 (by Easy Grammar Systems)

This text is both the teacher and student edition, put together in one big
yellow softbound book (478 pages), and I've found it to be a godsend! The
teacher's page is on the left (complete with answers and instruction tips),
while the student's page is on the right. Simply place a piece of paper on the
teacher's side, so that child doesn't see the answers. On a personal note, I've
decided that Easy Grammar is the route my son and I will be taking. It explains
grammar rules in such a way that even *I* can't go wrong! I've even learned a
few things I never before understood concerning grammar!

Introduces 28 prepositions, then uses the process of deleting prepositional
phrases as student moves forward. Includes capitalization, punctuation, sentence
types, verbs, nouns, adjectives, conjunctions, interjections, pronouns, and
adverbs, as well as writing a friendly letter. Very easy format and not
overwhelming for child, nor parent. Unit reviews, unit tests, cumulative
reviews, and cumulative tests are included. Book is very gently used and you
would be pleased with it. ~ $18

~~~~~~~~
MAD LIBS
This unopened package contains 2 Mad Libs books... "Mad Libs on the Road" and
"Kid Libs." Great fun for students, as they become more familiar with
grammatical terms, such as "noun," "plural," "adjective," etc. ~ $4
~~~~~~~~

READING DETECTIVE, BEGINNING (Critical Thinking Company)

(Designed for grades 3-4.) Teaches a depth of analysis that guarantees superior
reading comprehension, top grades, and higher test scores! The workbook is
organized into single-skill units with a concluding mixed-skills unit and
provides an introductory lesson for each skill. The standards-based critical
thinking activities of Reading Detective® develop the analysis, synthesis, and
vocabulary skills children need for exceptional reading comprehension. The
activities are especially effective at helping children understand more
challenging reading concepts such as drawing inferences, making conclusions,
determining cause-and-effect, and using context clues to define vocabulary.
Students read and analyze short literature passages and stories that include
fiction and nonfiction genres. Then they answer multiple-choice and
short-response questions, citing sentence evidence to support their answers.
Includes pretests, post-tests, lesson guidelines, and answers with detailed
evidence. Reading and literary analysis skills are based on grade-level
standards.

Softbound; new (never used, because we had two of them, and just used one); 206
pages. Sells for $23.99 on the Critical Thinking Company site, but I'll sell it
for $18.

~~~~~~~~
SPECTRUM READING (GRADES 3 & 4)
I have 2 of these books. One is for grade 3, the other, grade 4. Both are in
excellent condition. - "The workbooks are designed to help students improve
comprehension, vocabulary, decoding, and study skills - going beyond the typical
reading comprehension program. The selections are appealing also. Rather than
unrelated excerpts, the workbook contains a storyline which progresses
throughout the book. Each reading is an event centering around the same
characters and families. While the characters and scenario are fictitious, many
of the excerpts contain a good bit of real, textual information. It's a nice
blend, with students learning a lot from the context of the story. Plus,
students are more motivated to read the next passage, since there's an ongoing
story in the background. The worktext is also in full-color, with a photograph
or illustration accompanying every passage. Each selection is contained on one
page, with exercises on the facing page. Each exercise page has Knowing the
Words, Learning to Study, Reading and Thinking, and Working with Words sections.
These correspond roughly to the skills mentioned above. It would be difficult to
give examples of the activities; they vary so much from one selection to the
next that there is little repetition. This constant variety would also be more
stimulating to a student than completing the same types of exercises over and
over. Answer key is included in book. (Online source)
On a personal note, these have really benefitted my special needs son, who has
had trouble with reading comprehension-type skills. He doesn't care to read,
however, these selections have kept his interest. ~ $5 each
~~~~~~~~

SPECTRUM VOCABULARY (GRADES 4, 5, & 6)

I have 3 of these books. One is for grade 4, one for grade 5, and the last,
grade 6. They're all in excellent condition. These are heavily language-arts
based, vocabulary workbooks, with emphasis on learning and using words in
context. Each workbook is 160 pages in length, and is arranged by skill, not
types of words studied. The skills covered include: classification, synonyms,
antonyms, homonyms, context clues, concept words, sensory words, plurals,
suffixes, prefixes, root and base words, imported words, abbreviations, compound
words, and contractions. In each skills section, workbook pages focus on using
the language skill through different vocabulary words. Exercises involve
matching words synonyms, doing crossword puzzles antonyms, filling in the blanks
using the correct word when two homonyms are provided, classifying groups of
concept words, making singular words into plurals, adding suffixes to words so
they can be used properly in a sentence, abbreviating full words that are
normally written as abbreviations, making contractions out of words, and more.
Answer key is included in book.

On a personal note, I have been so impressed with these books... and wish the
Spectrum Vocabulary series continued on into upper grades. ~ $5 each

~~~~~~~~
THEY'RE POETS AND THEY KNOW IT! (A COLLECTION OF 30 TIMELESS POEMS)
(Grades 4-8) Small book of poetry by timeless poets, such as, Emily Dickinson,
Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walt Whitman, Lewis
Carroll, and more. Softbound and like new condition. ~ $1
~~~~~~~~

Library Skills / Report & Research Skills

I have two workbooks called "Thinking Skills" (by the American Education
Publishing), which are actually more along the lines of developing library and
report/research skills. More info on each grade, below:

- THINKING SKILLS (GRADE 4)

Designed to enhance and improve thinking skills through a variety of
thought-provoking exercises that stress comprehension and recall. Students will
also learn how to outline, summarize, and take notes. Practice is provided in
the use of library skills, and students will be taught how to use the
encyclopedia. Students will write reports which put to practical use the
research skills they've mastered. Softbound; 87 pages; gently used. ~ $5

- THINKING SKILLS (GRADE 5)

Designed to enhance and improve thinking skills through a variety of
thought-provoking exercises that stress the elements needed to gather
information and write a report. Students will review skills needed for taking
notes, summarizing, and outlining. They will also increase their vocabularies,
improve their editing skills, and research and write a report that puts their
new skills to practical use. In addition, students will learn how to find
information in periodicals, card catalogs, and library computers. Softbound; 87
pages; gently used. ~ $5

~~~~~~~~
READERS
I have several wonderful hardbound, workbook-sized readers. These are former
public school readers, and one book should last an entire year, since they are
so thick (each have from 576 - 672 pages). Each are full of stories,
biographies, poetry, non-fiction, etc., and each piece introduces the reader to
the particular author who wrote them.
- SEEING IS BELIEVING ... GRADE 4 (Scott Foresman Reading) ~ $8
- BEAT THE STORY DRUM... GRADE 4 (Macmillan McGraw-Hill) ~ $8
- DON'T FORGET TO FLY... GRADE 5 (Macmillan McGraw-Hill) ~ $8
- JUST PAST THE POSSIBILITY... GRADE 6 (Macmillan McGraw-Hill) ~ $8
- BECOME THE MUSIC... GRADE 7 (Macmillan McGraw-Hill) ~ $8
- DREAM WORLD.... GRADE 8 (Macmillan McGraw-Hill) ~ $8
Miscellaneous Literature
- THE FIVE LITTLE PEPPERS MIDWAY (by Margaret Sidney)
It's five years later for the children of Five Little Peppers and How They Grew.
Now the Peppers and their Mamsie are living with gruff, kindly Mr. King, his
grandson, Jasper, and the Whitneys - three families together in Mr. King's grand
mansion, and what times they have: parties, outings, tricks, theatricals,
dances. The Pepper family's days of poverty in "the little brown house" are
behind them, but not their fond memories of life there. Now new adventures await
them as they grow - including a new father, and a whole new future together.
It's hard to imagine that anything could threaten the Peppers' happiness, yet
haughty Mrs. Chatterton, Mr. King's spiteful cousin, is determined to spoil
things for them. And Phronsie is the key to Mr. Chatterton's frightful plan!
Softbound; 256 pages; gently used. ~ $2
~~~~~~~~

- POLLYANNA (by Eleanor H. Porter)

Eleven year old orphan, Pollyanna Whittier, is sent to live with her spinster
Aunt Polly. Although not particularly excited about the prospect, Polly knows
her duty and agrees to take Pollyanna in her care. Before too long, the carefree
nature of this little girl changes the lives of all those around her, including
that of stern, no nonsense Aunt Polly. When Pollyanna is involved in a critical
accident, the town must work to bring joy back into the life of this beloved
girl. Softbound; 251 pages; a bit of wear. An owners sticker is on the inside
front cover, and a child wrote a poem on the back inside cover. ~ $1

~~~~~~~~
- THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES: BOOK 1, THE FIELD GUIDE
It all started with a mysterious letter left at a tiny bookstore for authors
Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. Its closing lines: "We just want people to know
about this. The stuff that has happened to us could happen to anyone." Little
could they imagine the remarkable adventure that awaited them as they followed
Jared, Simon, and Mallory Grace and a strange old book into a world filled with
elves, goblins, dwarves, trolls, and a fantastical menagerie of other creatures.
The oddest part is in entering that world, they didn't leave this one!
Hardbound; excellent condition with tight spine and clean pages; 114 pages. ~ $5
~~~~~~~~

- THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES: BOOK 2, THE SEEING STONE

In the Spiderwick Chronicles' second book, things get even more exciting--and
kind of scary--for the Grace kids. The series' already-fast pace picks up
quickly in the second installment, and we can begin to imagine what other sorts
of trouble these three will turn up as they learn the rules to this odd (and
dangerous) new world--while, of course, trying to explain away the strange
goings-on to their mother.

Hardbound; excellent condition with tight spine and clean pages; 114 pages. ~ $5

~~~~~~~~
- THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES: GOBLINS ATTACK (Special Edition of The Seeing
Stone)
For anyone who buys both the above two Spiderwick books, I will throw this one
in for free.
~~~~~~~~

- BUNNY MY HONEY (by Anita Jeram) - (Scholastic; Softbound ; 34 pages) Attempts
to show the strength of parental love. Little Bunny is obviously well cared for
by his adoring mother, who calls him "Bunny, my Honey." During a game with Miss
Mouse and Little Duckling, Bunny wanders off and becomes lost. Frightened, he
calls for Mommy, who, of course, is also searching for him. ~ $1

~~~~~~~~
- DREAM! A TALE OF WONDER, WISDOM, AND WISHES (by Susan V. Bosak) - (Hardbound;
32 pages) A one-of-a-kin collaboration of 15 internationally acclaimed artists!
Be a dreamer.. From the smallest personal beginnings to the largest human
triumphs, why are we here if not to dream? As you open this Dream Chest, you are
whisked away on a colorful journey of a lifetime in which the young discover all
the possibilities within themselves and adults are reminded that their best can
be just ahead. Remarkable illustrations, inspiring text, and a beautifully
resonant story reveal more with each reading. A celebration of living and
dreaming, this is a book to treasure, to share, and to give as a gift - for
everyone, at any age, who dreams. (Retails at $18, however, I am asking $5.)
SILENT THUNDER: A CIVIL WAR STORY (by Andrea Davis Pinkney)
(Ages 9-16.) Children's fiction about slavery typically involves young
protagonists struggling with injustice, yearning to read and risking their lives
for freedom; Pinkney reinvigorates this familiar framework by infusing her work
with a more personal, equally hard-hitting theme. The "silent thunder" of the
title refers to the urgent need for enslaved children (and adults) to suppress
their own desires and thoughts. As an adult slave warns 11-year-old Summer,
"Anything that makes you feel good has gotta stay cooped up, like a toad
wriggling inside a croaker sack, else it can be taken away." Yet Summer is
practically bursting to chat about everything, wondering who her daddy is, why
her mother is so moody, why she has to beat rugs, why she can't have a
china-head doll. Her older brother, Rosco, the "body servant" of young Master
Lowell, has learned to read from eavesdropping on Lowell's lessons; he teaches
Summer to read, too, and when she can't keep this dangerous accomplishment to
herself, he makes her a doll in whom she can safely confide. Rosco, meanwhile,
grapples with his own secrets, namely his knowledge of Lincoln's Emancipation
Proclamation. While Pinkney bows to a few stereotypes, generally her portraits
are unusually well nuanced. As Summer and Rosco alternate as narrators, their
feelings flow off the page to envelop the reader. 218 pages; excellent
condition. ~ $2.50
- IF YOU TRAVELED WEST IN A COVERED WAGON (by Ellen Levine)
(Ages 4-12.) A provocative question-and-answer format and a multitude of facts
bring to life the Oregon Trail in the 1840s. New larger format with full-color
illustrations. This book was wonderful to use in the classroom with my Fourth
Graders! It is written so that they can easily read and understand it and
provided realistic illustrations to support the text. While it is not a book
that can be easily read in one sitting it goes along well with our study of the
Westward Movement and was enjoyed by all the students. It was conducive to group
discussion and covered all the aspects of the topic that the students wished to
know from the question "What was a covered wagon?" to "Could they recieve mail
along the way?". It lent itself to projects and assignments for the students. 80
pages, colorful pictures, very good condition. ~ $2.50
sixteen, returns home to Virginia after four years of school in England to find
conditions in America greatly unsettled. When war breaks out in 1861, Vincent
staunchly supports the rights of slaves but joins Lee's cavalry to fight for the
Confederacy. Henty's gripping story, written several decades after the war,
weaves the spirited teenagers adventures with real-life events, while providing
an acute glimpse of the conflict from a Southern perspective. Henty celebrates
family loyalty, honor, bravery, and determination in the face of adversity. 328
pages, excellent condition ~ $4.50
suspected.
problem with slavery in the first place. "Slaves are treated just like family,"
she says. Then Tim and Pam are put into a situation where they can save the life
of a slave baby whose mother has just been killed. Will Pam changer her views on
opens a store in Cincinnati that won't sell anything produced by slave labor.
Meg thinks there must be a way to deal with the issue that won't make people so
angry. Then Meg gets terribly sick. Will Fred come to value the things that make
his sister so different from him? And will Meg learn to stand up for herself and
others?
Purlee helps slave owners. Fred's problems follow him home when his sister Julia
Fred's warnings about them. When Mr. Purlee blames an explosion at the factory
Will Papa and Fred settle their differences? And how can Fred's enemy possibly
become his friend?
What can Carl and Edie do to prove their loyalty?
CYRUS HOLT AND THE CIVIL WAR (by Anna Gertrude Hall)
Cyrus Holt was nine years old when the Civil War began, and thirteen when it
ended. This is the story of those years as Cyrus lived them in a small village
in upstate New York. Though the actual fighting took place far from home, it is
nonetheless felt there, and its impact is reflected through a succession of
episodes in the life of Cyrus, his family, and friends.
This out of print book was once on the shelves of a library. It is obviously
used, but the spine, cover and pages are still strong and firm. Pages are still
pretty clean, considering it was published in 1965. $2
IN MY FATHER'S HOUSE (by Ann Rinaldi)
(Ages 12+.) By an extraordinary quirk, the McLean family entertained
Confederates at their Manassas home just before the battle of Bull Run--and also
hosted the peace negotiations at Appomattox, where they had moved to escape the
war. Staying close to documented facts, as detailed in an excellent note,
Rinaldi uses the McLeans' lives to dramatize the war's moral dilemmas. From his
marriage in 1852, Will McLean has an uneasy relationship with his feisty
seven-year-old stepdaughter Osceola (``Oscie''), the narrator; though she loves
and respects the northern governess Will hires, and absorbs many of her ideas,
Oscie is uneasy with Will's progressive stance toward slavery and, later, with
his profiteering. Some of Rinaldi's inventions are unevenly developed--Oscie's
long-held suspicions of one slave (dispelled when she understands her true
story); a couple of romances typical of the era--though they do fill out the
story. The most compelling relationship is between Oscie and Will, strong-minded
characters, often opposed, whose mutual respect turns believably into a
father-daughter bond, touchingly acknowledged in the last scene. Meanwhile, the
author skillfully weaves history into her story--offstage battles, resentment
against profiteers, a remarkable depiction of the northern generals taking the
McLeans' furniture as memorabilia of Lee's surrender. Despite some weaknesses
(Oscie at seven is unbelievably mature, and there's a 20th-century feel to some
of the dialogue): a sweeping, dramatic overview of the war, authentic and
compelling. Bibliography; chronology. (Historical fiction; 333 pages; very good
condition) ~ $2
THE CIVIL WAR - COMPLETE 6 BOOK SET (by James R. Arnold and Roberta Wiener)
(Grades 5-12) War historians reveal the political, economic, and cultural
implications of the Civil War through the voices of Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson
Davis, former slaves, impassioned abolitionists, soldiers, and other
participants. Refreshing design illuminates the conflict that pitted North
against South in a monumental struggle over slavery and states' rights.
Book Features - Charts/Graphs/Diagrams . Primary Source Quotations . Places to
Visit . Sidebars . Bibliography . Black-and-White Photographs . Full-Color
Illustrations . Further Reading . Glossary . Index . Maps . Timeline . Table of
Contents . Websites
Book 1 - "DIVIDED IN TWO: THE ROAD TO CIVIL WAR, 1861"
Although the first official gunshot of the Civil War was fired on April 12,
1861, the sequence of events leading up to it began much earlier. Go back
through time to discover the many events and beliefs that led to one of the
bloodiest and most tragic events in American history--the Civil War.
Book 2 - "ON TO RICHMOND: THE CIVIL WAR IN THE EAST, 1861-1862"
With the commencement of the Civil War, U.S. President Lincoln and Confederate
President Davis were forced to choose military strategies and leaders. Their
initial choices of Generals McClellan and Lee determined the style, length, and
mood of the war. Go behind the scenes to determine how the size, skill, and
morale of each army affected the outcome of major battles.
Book 3 - "RIVER TO VICTORY: THE CIVIL WAR IN THE WEST, 1861-1862"
While many people focused on the war raging in the East, a lesser-known general,
Ulysses S. Grant, was leading the Union army to a series of victories along
several strategic rivers in the West. The significance of these victories would
eventually lead to a crucial change in the leadership of the Union army, and the
eventual shift of military power from the Confederacy to the Union.
Book 4 - "LIFE GOES ON: THE CIVIL WAR AT HOME, 1861-1865"
While thousands of men went off to fight, those who were left behind faced
hardship and dangers of a different kind. Families throughout the nation were
often ripped apart by differing views, women faced the growing number of
casualties as their husbands and families were killed, and everyone experienced
shortages of basic goods.
Book 5 - "THIS UNHAPPY COUNTRY: THE TURN OF THE CIVIL WAR, 1863"
The defeat of Lee at Gettysburg in July 1863 coupled with Grant's victory in the
heavily protected city of Vicksburg that same month were two of the most
important events of the war. With the South's defeat at Chickamauga, the fate of
the Confederacy was virtually sealed. Although it would take two more years
before the South surrendered, the tide was turned with these significant, and
tragic, battles.
Book 6 - "LOST CAUSE: THE END OF THE CIVIL WAR, 1864-1865"
As the end of the war approached, the situation in the south became more and
more
desperate. With Sherman's march on Atlanta, Lincoln's reelection, the surrender
at Appomattox, and Reconstruction and its aftermath, this comprehensive volume
brings the tragedies of war to a conclusion.
These are hardbound books (72 pages each) are in excellent condition, never used
because they were too advanced for my special needs son (reading
comprehension-wise). I'm tempted to keep them, thinking he'll enjoy them in a
couple of years, but we really need the money. Sigh. These books will be sold as
a complete set, and if you are interested in learning more about them, type in
"Civil War" in the search box at the following site: http://www.lernerbooks.com/
FS: Critical Thinking, Auditory Development; Skills Evaluators
- LISTEN, MY CHILDREN, AND YOU WILL HEAR (by Betty Lou Kratoville; )
Students who have difficulties with auditory comprehension skills will benefit
from this book, as my special needs son has. He has both long- and short-term
memory issues, and we've been so grateful for this book! He's come miles in both
his listening skills, and his listening comprehension and so forth! The book is
a collection of stories and exercises to help children develop listening skills,
auditory memory, vocabulary, and imagination. Great for both home school
parents, classroom teachers, speech-language pathologists, and special
educators. Activities take just a few moments each day.
This 232 page)book is spiral-bound, which I really appreciated, and is in
excellent condition (no writing, tears, bends, etc) You can check it out at this
site:
http://www.proedinc.com/customer/productView.aspx?ID=3415
You'll notice that the book sells for $50 at her website, however, I will sell
it for $16.
~~~~~~~~

I have two books in this series:

- SCRATCH YOUR BRAIN A1 (Grades 2-3; by Critical Thinking Company; 124
activities; 104 pages)

- SCRATCH YOUR BRAIN B1 (Grades 4-5; by Critical Thinking Company; 180
activities, 136 pages)

From an online source: "Children really do have to work to figure out a wide
variety of math problems, including puzzles, sequences and patterns, games, math
tricks, and other fun. Each challenging exercise is intended to boost
mathematical reasoning. And there isn't always just one right answer; some may
have two or three, requiring students to approach the problem in different ways
to get an answer. Space is provided to explain the reasoning for the approach
taken. Answers are in the back of the book, along with step-by-step solutions. A
matrix correlated to the National Math Standards allows you to see which skills
are used in each activity, so you can pick out ones that go along with your
studies. No rote here, these activities make you think, preparing you for
assessment tests and giving you a head start on algebraic thinking."

I'll give you a heads up, however... the A-1 book says it's for grades 2-3, but
some of the problems, in my opinion, look like something a 5th grader might work
on. The B-1 book says it's for grades 4-5, however again some of the problems
seem to be a little difficult for those grades. They have been very helpful for
my special needs son, however you certainly don't need to be special needs to
benefit!

These books are in like new condition. On the Rainbow Resource site, you can
find them each for $16.99. I will sell them for $12 each.

- PREPARE YOUR CHILD TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL (by Grant Von Harrison)

Book helps prepare young children for entering school, using games and
activities to tutor them. Chapters include: speech 1, speech 2, colors, shapes
and sizes, family names, naming digits, counting, writing numbers, sight words,
letter sounds, writing letters, blending, personal data, money, parent
employment, time, spelling, addition, subtraction, math facts, appendix.
(Workbook-sized book; 117 pages; like new condition, although some one has
written a tiny #15 on the front, bottom righthand corner, and circled it.) ~ I
bought it new for $13.95, but am will to sell it for $8

~~~~~~~~
- SKILLS EVALUATION FOR THE HOME SCHOOL (Grades K-6; by Weaver Curriculum)
Workbook-sized, spiral bound, 142-page evaluation book, designed to help the
home school parent determine the skill level of each child. It comes a long way
in laying a framework for one's home schooling goals for one's child, helping
you successfully target areas which might need improvement. Grades kindergarten
through six are discussed, followed by evaluation milestone questions in the
following areas: auditory, motor, oral, visual, and comprehension skills, social
studies, science, health, language arts, and arithmetic. A glossary is available
at the back of the book.
On a personal note, this book has helped me immensely as I've struggled to teach
my special needs son, who is all over the board (grade-wise) in his studies. I
bought this book for $18, but I've written with pencil in the book, and then
erased the markings. Pages and cover are nice and crisp, no tears, etc.,
however, because I've written in it, and then erased, I'll sell this book for
$10.
~~~~~~~~

- BUILDING THINKING SKILLS BOOK 1 LESSON PLANS AND TEACHER'S MANUAL (Critical
Thinking Press, 1986; includes answers)

This book will only be of use to you if you have the Building Thinking Skills
book 1 book, of the same year to accompany it. Someone sold it to me without
telling me this, and it is of no use to me. ~ $3
