My late husband, Ivar Stanley Westerback, served in Italy from 1944-
1945. He took pictures of his group and I sent copies to Gary Smith.
I am willing to share images. The pictures include photos of his
Battalion, Company and unit, and GI's in smaller groups in a small
town in Italy (Either Ballino or Belligio). Some of the men are
identified, others are not. There are also pictures of General Mark
Clark's visitto is Regiment. I am working on a family history and
will share any important inforamtion with the group.
I would like to find any living members of this group and would like
the images to also be part of the 88th Infantry museum files.
Have a great day.

Hi Everybody,
Just wanted to let everybody know that I deleted the message with
Fred's email address because of email spammers.
When you post messages on the internet they last forever and little
email crawlers go out looking for email addresses on websites and
forums, etc., collect them up, put them on a lists and sell the lists
and then everybody sends junk emails to them.
So, be careful about posting someones personal email. Website URLs are
ok unless it's unrelated, another form of spamming called "url
stuffing".
Gotta go.
Cheers,
Gary Smith

Hi Everybody.
There is a new book out by a guy in Italy named Luca Valente. He mailed
me awile back about it and now it's finally published. Luca says he'll
send me a signed copy. His website is in Italian but if you bring up
the url address in Yahoo it has a translation feature to tranlate the
site to English.
http://www.lucavalente.it/index.php
Luca writes:
I'm an Italian journalist and historical researcher (from Schio, near
Vicenza) and I'm preparing a book about the end of the war in Veneto in
April 1945 (the temporary title is: "From Po to Alps. April 1945: the
German retreat and the Allied pursuit in Veneto").
Also, a fellow named Jeff who's grandfather was in the 350th is a film
maker and about 6 months ago placed 2nd in the DeNiro film competition
with a short film named "Battaglia" about the minutes before the Nazi
attack against the 350th at Mount Battaglia 26Sep44.
This is the mountain where my uncle died and who was later named
as "TheUnknown Hero Of Battle Mountain". The 350th received the
Distinguished Unit Citation and thereafter named the "Battle Mountain
Regiment".
Jeff says he rewrote the ending to the film and has it ready now. He's
been invited to join the list and let us know when it's posted
somewhere. It's a great piece of work and definately should have won
the DeNiro contest.
Gotta go.
Cheers,
Gary Smith

Roy, I have so much enjoyed this web site and learning more about the Blue
Devils. I have been talking with Fred Lincoln from out side of Boston. He left
for Italy yesterday for 10 days. I will be happy to forward his email address
to you. He may be able to answer your questions.
My father, Henry Cleeves, was in the 88th Div. 351 Infantry. He passed away 8
years ago leaving us (his 4 children) with a lot of questions. He did not talk
about the war--expect in history lessons from a teachers' perspective (not
personal). Fortunately, my father found his way back to NY State, went on to
college on the GI bill at Alfred University where he met my mother and married
in 1946---4 children-all in our 50s now and living near Corning, NY.
Good luck in locating the information you are looking for.
I will forward you a recent email I received from Mr. Lincoln. I am sure he
will contact you when he returns from Italy.

Thank you so much for this information. I think I knew it was the Silver Star,
Bronze Star Medals. I have not read these books, however, I have been
forwarding all the emails on the Blue Devils to my older brother. He stated he
wanted to buy some of the books he saw on the internet. Hopefully, he will do
so. I have really enjoyed talking with folks who were in Italy and part of this
elite group. It has given me further insight into who my father was. I so wish
he could have talked about the Blue Devils and the war, but just didn't..He was
a history teacher so did talk about this in the sense of a history lesson. I
have been emailing a War Vet who served with my father. He lives outside of
Boston. Yesterday, he left for a 10 day trip to Italy. Can't wait to hear from
him when he returns.
God Bless the men and women serving today. I live a good life because of the
men and women who served during WW II and since.
Later,
Candice

Ms. Kellogg..........
Greetings, and the best to all.......... the correct term would be the
SILVER STAR MEDAL, awarded only for exemplary Gallantry under fire and heroism.
The BRONZE STAR MEDAL, falls below the Silver Star Medal, and can be awarded for
Meritorious Service and for Gallantry and Heroism, in the latter case, it is
adorned with a "V" device, which denotes "Valor"....... My over 30 years of a
military career in the U.S. Army, retired Dec. 2003, provides me this common
knowledge.
Have you all read the book, "The Blue Devils in Italy".... by John Paul
Delaney and "The Draftee Division".... I believe by Jack Sloan. In Delaney's
book, he has an extensive listing of all subordinate units and soldiers of the
88th. Infantry Division, awards, decorations, wounded, and it is rather
complete. You may be surprised to find your father, uncle, or grandfather's
name in there as I did my own father in the 350th. Regiment Awards section.
Best to one and all.........

Hi,
I have a litttle bit on the mtmestas.com website from someone who was
there. Holland sent me a box full of photos and I put some up on a Trust

A few pictures from the family archives of Col. James G. Holland, Jr
(second row, second from left) are presented here. Holland served with
the 88th Division, first with the 350th and then as G-2 during the
occupation, served on the Regimental Staff and commanded the 1st Bn,

I would love to attend this reunion just to be with the men who shared
the experience with my father. He would have been 82 this year. I
guess I just want to know someone who knew my Dad when he was in the
service. There is so much that my two brothers, sister, mother and I do
not know about my father. He wouldn't talk about "the war." Except in
the context of teaching history. He didn't like picnics or camping and
we do understand why. He always wanted to sit at a dining table to eat
and sleep in his own bed! No sleeping bags for him.
Thanks for writing. I will pass this on to my siblings.

Hi,
Does anyone know what a Frapper map is? It's short for "Friends Map"
and it's a free online map service where your friends, etc. can leave
a map marker locating the area they are from. You can also leave a
hello message and a picture if desired.
Click here to see our map: www.frappr.com/bluedevils
You all are invited to add your greetings amd map markers. Show any
new people that come by that you are here.
Any questions or if anybody needs any help let me know.
Frapper maps are free so if you want to make your own just follow
their instructions.

Was the 351st part of the 88th after WWII in Italy? Not quite sure.
My Uncle George J. Bobal Jr. (of Brooklyn, NYC) was the only male in
the family of 4 children and went overseas immediately after the end
of WW II.
I have posted an album to see if anyone recognizes him our other

Thanks for the Yahoo Group. Great idea!

Best wishes to all. I am Jeff Gallant, and I am the son of a former
88th. Infantry Division soldier. My father, PFC Edward J. Gallant,
originally of Somerville, Massachusetts, was a BAR (Browing Automatic
Rifleman) in Company E, 2nd. Battalion, 350th. Infantry Regiment, of
the 88th. Infantry Division. He was with the division from the Camp
Gruber days and was cited for heroism and gallantry under fire on 12 &
13 May 1944, in operations against Hill 316, in support of the attack
on Monte Cassino in Italy. My father was egregiously wounded during
his act of heroism in which he personally attacked and destroyed
numerous German Machine Gun positions, accounting for a score of dead
and captured German soldiers. My father was given the last rites of
the Catholic Church three times, but survived, and was awarded the
Silver Star for gallantry in August 1944 and the Purple Heart, as
well. My father resides, at the age of 84 years, in Massachusetts, he
is a 100% disabled Veteran. Anyone should feel free to contact me and
again, thanks for forming the group and thanks for the invitation.
