Hello Chris,

Happy New Year for 2009 to you and to anybody who read this message !

The idea to order seafoam is of course the best thing to do to begin
fast and good.

Make nice trees isn't too difficult than it looks. I'm not a
specialist of the scenery.

As you said : the scenery is very important in our hobby. Trains
aren't the only thing to model when we model trains. I think scenery
is important as trains themselves. Presentation during shows is very
important too. My friend Christopher Payne knows this well !

Before you order "leaves" for your trees, choose well the colors you
need for your season. I love fall with the brown, yellow red and
green colors. It's nice to see. I have used very different kinds of
colors melting them when I used them.

But remember, it's not difficult to match a good and realistic
result. I was really happy of my first trees when I began.

My layout should come in England for a show in Stafford in 2011 :
there, you'll can see the result in 3 dimensions (but 2011 is still
far... sorry !).

There was a time when this group was unmoderated. Please use common sense when
corresponding with members of this group - we are here to discuss narrow gauge
railway modelling and have fun doing so.

Things to remember:
1 - Humour does not translate easily to the written word. Emoticons and other
devices are not fool-proof. Please mind how you phrase messages so as not to
cause offence and remember that humour translates even less well between
langauges!

2 - Please delete unneccessary information from the your emails before posting,
particularly when replying to somebody else's post, the content of which is
appended automatically to your reply. Digest recipients don't want to read
multiple copies of the same information in the same email in quick succession!

3 - There is an option to send 'Well done' replies and the like to the original
sender instead of the whole group. If the archive is to be a store of useful
information, these messages may not be needed, and our allocated space, though
generous, is limited.

4 - You can delete anything that you post - files, photos, messages, etc. If you
decide that something is no longer relevent, please remove it. This applies
equally to content with a shelf-life, like postings about items for sale or eBay
auctions. That is not to say don't post them because people will be interested
to see them but they are no longer required when the item is sold.

5 - Membership is moderated but not restricted to members of the Association.
The first few posts of new members are also moderated to ensure that posts of
dubious or irrelevent content are not allowed through. Posts from new members
may not therefore appear immediately. Moderation will be removed quicker if you
are a member of the Association and include a valid membership number in your
signature.

6 - Please include your name, approximate location and Association Membership
number if you have one as a signature at the end of posts in order that people
know with whom they are interacting. If you have a web site to show off, please
include that too. This is a courtesy that we ask you to extend to your fellow
members in order that less knowledgable or newer members can find a place in
this community - it is not a clique except perhaps by subject matter.

7 - You will not have been sent every post that occurred before you joined but
it is possible that your question could already have been asked and answered.
The archive of messages is accessible online at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/7mmnga/messages and is searchable using the
[Search Archive] button and box next to it.

All of the above are strong guidelines, rather than rigidly enforced rules. These
measures and suggestions result from past experience. They will be exercised, as
opposed to enforced, by the group moderators with common sense and sensitivity.

We are after all here to have fun! Thank you for your time and back to 7mm
Narrow Gauge modelling.

Hi,

Now that I'm able to get into Fotopic again I have added two new collections to
the Shifting Sands site; one of a new kitbash of the Knightwing diesel kit to an
O9 loco, the other a step-by-step construction of O9 open coaches - with an
option for those not wanting to do it themselves!

http://shiftingsands.fotopic.net/

The layout will be appearing at the Derby members day on the 17th January,
please do stop by and say hello if visiting.

Question for all,

I'm making a jetty, with a hut for drying fish, drying not smoking. I need
to hang split fish from strings in the roof. I doubt that there are
commercial castings but has anyone any suggestions how to model the fish?

Apologies if you get this message through other groups.

Hi everyone.

Thought I would introduce myself having just joined the group.

I have just started modelling in 7mm narrow gauge, my eyes aren't what
they used to be, and so far have just laid the track. I had the chance
of a few bits of Bachmann On30 and will run this on a UK narrow gauge
line until I can make my own UK outline kits up! Look a bit weird at
first I know!

I have also joined the 7mm Narrow Gauge Association (No 3508)and
received my first magazine - I'm impressed.

Look forward to loads of good info and hope to visit the open day on
17th Jan.

I'm also new to these groups so you will have to put up with me until
I learn the ropes!

Depending on the size of the fish, I would make a 'half profile' of fish
carefully modelled in - say - milliput, mounted on a stick which could then be
pressed into a flat slab of plasticene, skim the moulds with either casting
resin or a thinnish paste of car body filler - fish them out (aarg!) and either
glue together in the appropriate places.

I have done this with small components like axleboxes very successfully.

Hi Frank,

My wife builds and furnishes dolls houses and she uses a product called
FIMO to make vegetables, meat and other foods.

FIMO comes in many colours and is obtainable from all good craft shops.
When you have produced the fish models you will need to bake them in
the oven - my wife usually does this after cooking the Sunday roast as
there is enough residual heat to harden off the FIMO.

Best wishes

Open the hold on your model fishing boat? :-)

Ask the gnome on your neighbour's garden pond (as a railway modeller
you'll be far too cultured to have such an ornament yourself!!). :-)

Seriously, instead of going to thebother of making a mould and
casting halves, if all you want is a few 'fish why not just roll out
a very thin layer of Milliput, cut out filleted fish shapes, score
them slightly down the 'backbone', make a pinhole for the string and
leave them to dry. You can convey any other impression of relief
that you want when/if you come to paint them.
This way, you could even introduce a degree of variation to the
extent the fillets have been opened.

Another option would be to stamp them out of plasticard, but you'd
have all the bother of making the stamp. Better I think to spend a
fewminutes with a craft knife AND you'll get a 'catch' of slightly
varied sizes and shapes.

Hope that helps,

Adrian

Do they dry whole fish? I was under the impression that some
disassembly was involved before they went on the drying racks. If this
is indeed the case then you might not want fish shapes but something a
little less fishlike – though probably not the vaguely rectangular
orange things I am so fond of but that is smoking not drying anyway.
Of course all I know about the subject could be put on the back of a
stamp and probably comes from watching the suspiciously plump Ray
Mears and reading those old 'surviving in the wilds of the Americas'
children's books you used to find in libraries Not to mention mother's
horror stories about ling fish.

G'day Michael,

Depends on where you come from. In some places the fish is merely split and
the guts taken out and retains its essential shape, in others the fish is
split from gills to tail and opened out while in others the head is taken
off and the rest split and opened out flat. My father was a professional
fisherman here in Oz and he never dried fish - no need to as there was never
a time when you couldn't catch fresh fish. Even smoked fish was something
"foreign" to us. I can remember an old Italian immigrant who had been a
fisherman "back in the Old Country" who became a good friend of my father
and some of the things he would do with fish astounded us - and the reverse
was obviously true.

The answer to the original question is to find out what the practice was for
the area in which the layout is set and then to model your "fish"
accordingly - and of course to watch out for the fishy equivalent of a rivet
counter as you have to be sure to have the right number of bones in your
herring, haddock, flounder or whatever.

Cheers,

David Roy Axup

Time for an update

LAYOUTS

Henmore 48ft of 7mm Narrow Gauge representing an imaginary station in Ashbourne
serving the local quarry and timber yard as well as passenger services. Runs on
16.5mm track using a variety of kits, scratch built or modified proprietary
stock. Shown at the NEC a couple of years ago and now booked to go to Wigan in
December and so we had better get the extension boards finished

Shifting Sands O9 by Colin Peake. Shifting Sands is the name of my 0-9 (7mm
scale, 9mm gauge) railway modelling project, an attempt to model a seaside
miniature railway in a compact space of 3ft x 2ft, on a modified cork notice
board. http://www.shiftingsands.fotopic.net/

Bricks and Pipes 7mm Narrow gauge industrial layout based on a Brick and Pipe
works in the South Derbyshire area

Port Wynnstay Quay. Compact dockside scene modelled by Phil Traxson using boards
made up from Ikea drawer units. Buildings and the dockside are obviously resin
castings!

HOn3 (not sure if the layout has a name!) First shown at a Slim Gauge Circle
event last year balanced on an ironing board, Dave Bush has now extended his
layout and will be shown as 'work in progress'

DEMONSTRATIONS

Digital Control. Paul Martin from EDM Models will be demonstrating DCC using
Lenz and NCE systems with sound from Soundtraxx.

Resin Casting. Phil Traxson will be demonstrating resin casting (this means he
will be catching up on outstanding orders while people watch him at work)

Plasticard Modelling. Keith Gilliver and Ian Thompson make O Gauge Trams and
Goods Vehicles

Trackbuilding. Ian Cross demonstrates trackbuilding in On3 although the
techniques apply to all scales and gauges.

Buildings in card and textured coating. David Wright will be demonstrating his
building techniques as illustrated in December and January issues of Railway
Modeller.

Scenics for American layouts. Dave Bush uses Sculptamold to continue the scenic
additions to his layout and shows his techniques for using real timber for
buildings.

TRADERS

EDM Models stock the full range of Bachmann On30, as well as stock from many
other US suppliers such as Stoney Creek, Banta, PSC and other hard to get items
from USA. Paul stocks DCC from Lenz, NCE and Soundtraxx. The new On30 Annual is
now available

Port Wynnstay Models have a comprehensive range of 7mm Narrow Gauge stock
specialising in the Festiniog Railway, with other companies represented as well
as freelance and architectural items. Also 7mm Standard 'O' Gauge items

Avalon Line. Howard Martin specialises in O9 rolling stock such as that seen on
estate railways and the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.

Association Sales. New modelling goods from the 7mm Narrow Gauge Assn

Publications. The Assn publish a number of books of prototype drawings along

Having just arrived home a full 26 hours after the Derby 7mm NGA Open Day
ended I am surprised to find no mention of it here.

So, in that case, I'll start....

Yesterday was the umpteenth annual 7mm Trent Valley Group of the 7mm NGA's
open day held at the community centre in Mickleover close to Derby. We had
70+ visitors during the day who signed in [plus the usual few that are
either above signing in or can't write]. This modest entrance donation and
the honesty box by the "help yourself tea, coffee and biscuit" supply
collected enough to cover the costs of the day.

The main hall had the group layout Henmore Dale set up for running by the
group and anyone who wanted a go. In the same hall were a couple of small
layouts, some demonstration and association sales. The two side class room
[the community centre is and old school] had some more sales stands, resin
casting and DCC demonstration and some more traders.

I assume that everyone enjoyed themselves but it is perhaps not for me to
say as one of the traders, demonstrator and co-organiser but the people who
came to play DCC with me seemed happy enough and my trade stand, EDM models,
did OK. Sadly, I have no photos of the day I can post, it's a good idea to
charge the camera battery before leaving home! Hopefully someone else will
post some as there were other people there with cameras.

Anyway, to those of you who turned up we hope you had a good day and thanks
for coming.

Despite there being moments this morning when lugging the layout in and out
of the van when we said never again we'll probably mellow and see you for a
similar event same time next year

Following on from Paul's email, a good day was had by all, though there were a
few weary faces as we'd not been able to get in on the Friday evening to set
Henmore up as is usually the case.

Seemed busier than previous members days to me, though I did have to miss last
year's. While I forgot to take any general pictures, I did take some of Henmore
which i'll upload in due course, though not tonight as I'm off to bed as I'm in
work at silly o'clock in the morning.

Cheers,
Andrew

Thanks Paul,

I thought it was a bit quiet. I would have liked to have gone, but I had to
work - you have to keep the paymasters even happier these days! Still I
shouldn't complain as all the family have expensive hobbies!!!

Regards,

Robin

This group is:
1 - for people interested in modelling narrow gauge railways in 7mm:1ft
scale or thereabouts
2 - not restricted to members of the 7mm Narrow Gauge Association although
membership of said organisation is thoroughly recommended

To those who couldn't make the Derby open day onthe 17th I have

Hope you enjoy and thanks to the various operators fro their help in
taking the photos. Most are of Henmore Dale as I was selling
