there;s a book out now that has
collected toy catalog
from the 50's and 60''s - I thnk just from the Sears
Wish Book. And that might be the name of the
collection -
the Big Wish Book, or something like that.
Yeah, I think we have that book at the library I work at. As I
recall, it's all black-and-white and the resolution on the catalog pages
is pretty crappy. I should have another look at it...
I'd love to do one with the
actually toy company sales
catalogs I've collected, but I"m unsure on the
legal/rights issues to all the copyrighted characters.
It might be worth contacting a book publisher with your idea to see what
they think. I'd imagine that they would probably have a better idea
of the copyright issues reprinting catalog pages would entail...?

My cousins had the Evel Kneivel and 6 Million Dollar Man toys. I always liked my Mike Powers, the Atomic Man figure better. Sure, he only had one bionic leg and had to hop everywhere, but his helicopter blades kinda made up for it ;)
Subject: Re: [70stoys] Starting a topic that doesn't involve Flatts
my two favorites were and are still the Bionic Man and Evel Kneviel lines. Oh how I wished the bionics were on the same scale as Megos.
I don't think any toy was cooler than the secret exploding briefcase that came with Oscar Goldman.

I contacted Schiffer Books (they're the ones that publish Bonavita's Mego
books) a couple of months ago about doing a book of Christmas catalog
reprints (1974-1984, Wards or Sears or both).
They sent me back what was, I think, a standard response: "Send us a sample
chapter."
I've been futzing around with it for a while. I finally got the sample
catalog pages (1976) printed up, now I'm just working on (or not, as the
case may be) writing up the "supplemental commentary."
I think gathering together the toy parts of Christmas catalogs for other
toy collectors or nostalgia junkies is a great idea, in whatever form it takes.

Well just wondering on what people think of this idea. I've been buying old Christmas catalogs from 1972-1989, pretty much what I think is my "golden" age of toys. I'm going to scan EVERY page of the toy sections- and maybe some of the sports equipment and put it on a CD with a slideshow viewer. Here's my question would any of you be interested in something like this?
Also I'm still looking for a couple of years for the catalogs.
Alrighty.... would love to hear what you think about this! Also has anyone done this before????
OK does anyone remember busting up your Stretcharm Strong (mine I did this to the Stretcharm Monster) to find out if the middle was full of grape jelly???? Hell I remember the day I did it to mine! I also remember being VERY bummed that it wasn't!!! I also remember my mom being a rather miffed at my backyard experiment! I begged for another one.... but NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Boy what a bummer! I've seen that toy go for as much as $3300!!! DAMN IT!!!
I disagree! I would have to say that GI JOE ROCKED!!!!!! ;)

Yeah I have to agree with ya
Thats one section I'd like to get into more is the mini figures.
I absolutely love Silver Age DC and the 70's gave us so much to
choose from.
My favorite is the set of Marx 6" plastic Marvel Superhero
figures.
I had those when I was a kid, and I played the shit out of them!

Neat link from Slashdot today:
http://web.archive.org/web/20020121230544/http://www.safestuff.com/
It has memos from the real early days of Atari and cool artists' renderings
of how they thought arcades would look like and how people would look while
playing arcade games.

I'm happy with the bunch I got, for the rest I picked up Derryl DePriest's (he was a MML member WAAAAAY back in the day) GI Joe book with all the kickass pictures. It rocks, and I got it on clearance at a B&N a year or so ago
I saw that book in it's early stages at the US bookfair, I ordered it before it even went to press. It absolutely rocks and up until now I couldn't remember how I knew that name.
If you want the reverse of that book but for megos, pick up "Greenbergs guide to Superhero toys" and wade through horrible pictures by an author who thinks he's an artiste.
The biggest shame is that the book features the collection of my late friend John MacGonagle, the original owner of the GAH prototype and they didn't feature it in the book!!!!!
- Fighting Furies: Pegleg, Hook, Ghost, knockoff, and a couple of Pegleg
& Hook in FF outift "disguises," all on the big
Sears-exclusive Sea Fury playset.
- Big Jim's PACK: All the PACK and Zorak with the Howler motorcycle and
the LazerVette.
Joe
Adventure Team- I have a bunch of Joes and Mexican variations (pics
today!)
I love Adventure team stuff but it requires full time commitment and I
can't give it
I agree. AT stuff is great, but there's so MUCH of it.

Megos are definately my bread and butter but i have a few sidelines:
Joe Adventure Team- I have a bunch of Joes and Mexican variations (pics today!)
I love Adventure team stuff but it requires full time commitment and I can't give it
Big Jim- I have a few P.A.C.K guys MIB and some El Squadron Lobo
Next to Mego I love the PACK, I started collecting it in 1987
Licoln Monsters- I have three, doubt i get any more
MAC Men- traded with Keene for a mountain and other stuff, I don't have
any room to display it
Shogun Warriors- I have a Godzilla and a couple of beat guys I got at yardsales
when i was 12, no real interest but i could never sell them
And that it save for my wife's collection of 70's Space Lego
What 70's toys
do we all collect? I buy Mego 8" figures, GI Joe Adventure team
stuff, Tomland figures, and whatever other lines happen to catch my eye.
My Mego collection is pretty lame by most standards, since I tend to buy
Megos with an eye to making D&D customs out of them. As far as GI
Joe, I'm slowly but surely piecing together the Search for the Mummy's
Tomb playset (red jewel, anyone?) And I just need four figures to have a
complete set of Tomland Star Raiders. How about you
guys?
Mego 8" stuff is the biggest single part of my collection, but for a
lot of other 1970's toy lines I like to have just enough to be
"representative" of all that line comprised. I especially
like to display toy lines on a playset from that line whenever
possible.
Stuff I have that fits that category:
- GI Joe AT: Eagle-eye Joe, Atomic Man, Bulletman, and the two Intruders
displayed on the Secret Mountain Outpost playset.
- Kenner Star Wars: Most of the first series figures displayed on the
Death Star playset.
- Matchbox MAC Men: A whole bunch of guys and vehicles displayed on the
MAC Mountain playset. Also, I have the Oceana boat and the Mobile
Command Vehicle.
- 24" Shogun Warriors: I got on a big kick for these a few months
ago and got most of them (the American ones anyway).
- Ideal STAR Team: Bad guy and robots with the Star Hawk
spaceship.
I also have lost of "one-offs" or smaller groups: FP
Adventure People, Evel Knievel, SMDM, Electoman & Zogg, etc.
Boy, I need to get some pics up, don't I? :)
The couple of things I've been looking for lately are a Kraken to
complete my Clash of the Titans set and more Knickerbocker Lord of the
Rings figures (I just have Frodo and Gollum at the moment).
What do YOU guys have, and what have you been looking for lately?
:)

Well, I think we're all getting sick and tired of reading the newest flames on the Mego list, so I though I'd start a topic that *doesn't* have anything to do with Flatt customs or retarded flamers.
