Minna-san,

Captivating book by Japanese designer for Christmas.

Each page is laser cut and when opened the book makes a diorama.  Beautiful!

My latest super restore.  The restore looks simple, but it isn't.  LOL!  I had to redraw shadows, his left arm, the stock of his rifle, the camera, the rope on the tent wall, the rock border, etc. etc.

I was cackling like a cartoon witch while I was doing it, I was having so much fun.  =)  Wish all of them were as fascinating to do as this.

My sympathies to you.  I got CS4 a few months before CS5 came out, and the content-aware feature slowly convinced me to spend the extra on CS5.  Naturally CS6 with selective bokeh came trundling down the path not too terribly long after that.  Sheesh......  At that point I called a halt and stopped upgrading.

As it turned out, besides content-aware, the other feature "puppet wrap" that excited me so much, I wound up never using.

Still have my CS4 Extended, since CS5 is an upgrade, but again I've never used all the really cool goodies in it, like 3D rendering.

The irony of it all is that while content-aware speeds up my restorations hugely, I still use the clone tool it was supposed to make superfluous, and I use it constantly.  Sometimes nearly 50% of what I do is cloning, with content-aware to clean it up.  Don't get me wrong, I love content-aware, but it's not the magic superduper cure-all that I thought it would be.  It does speed things up considerably though, which is a big help.

A shame you didn't look at Elements 9 or 10.  Fraction of the price and while it is limited you can get around a lot of that.  I got sent one free with my purchase of an Epson scanner and I've looked at it.

Give a holler if you get the urge to upgrade the CS6.  We can form our own 12-step Photoshop Anonymous group.

Mina-san,

Disturbing incident today.  Last night since my laptop was running a little slow I did maintenance on it, using CCleaner and Super Antispyware.  Found 104 pieces of tracking cookies that had built up over nearly a year of having this laptop.  Completely deleted them off my computer.

Today when I booted up it still wasn't a lot faster, so I ran Super Antispyware again.

In one single night Google Chrome had installed 67 (!) tracking cookies on my clean computer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To say I was angry doesn't begin to describe my feelings.

I  got Chrome by accident when I didn't read an installer warning in full and did not uncheck the box giving permission to install it.

Immediately it tried to change my home page, it DID change my gmail set-up, and it tried to make Google my home search engine.

I used a nifty British uninstaller called REVO to uninstall Chrome and check for left over files.  The blasted thing is gone now.

I use gmail, google calendars, and was going to use google wallet and google voice.  After this blatant rip-off I think instead I will simply change all the info from the past into something new and not ever let Chrome on my computer again.

Big Brother is not only alive and well, he IS watching you!  He just changed his name to Google.  Be warned if you use Chrome.  They might even know your shoe size......if it's on an electronic receipt, which means practically everything, these days.

Had google chrome once;  I had the entire slew of Web Browser installed on my previous machine, for web authoring purposes.

Google's intrusive software made the machine unstable... I removed it completely from the machine.

It shall never touch the workstation again.

There's another link showing a historical full set assembled on display somewhere on that url/page.    If you don't find it I'll dig it out from my folders.

Lordy I'd love to see a contemporary depiction of a woman gladiator!  Bet they used germanic types, for size and strength.  Wish they'd dig out the rest of Pompei and Herculaneum.  Has to be more murals there somewhere.  Heck, Nero's wife had a residence there.  BIG thing!

thanks Norm.  I've seen that statue before but not the bas-relief.  =)

Pomp. and Herc. are both only slightly excavated and the oldest arena in the republic/empire is there (uncovered) and that's why I'd like to see more of them.  Lots of murals and mosaics.   Funny thing about Rome at least, the patricians lived all over the city, not in a neighborhood or enclave like social/money classes started doing later in cities, so there's plenty of rich stuff to be found still in those two cities.

I recall several huge palatial homes that were closed back up in the 1800s because of escaping posionous gasses killing excavators as they broke through walls.  They aren't going anywhere--still there to be dug back out again.....   LOL

Yesterday, having my morning coffee, I saw an article in PULSE, the online news aggregate ap I have on my tablet, that fascinated me.

"Life imitates art", you might say:

The German army is deploying a sort of version of Google Glass to its troops.  Equiping 10 man infantry squads with a helicopter 'mother ship' backup/drop off/air evac.

Now here is where it gets spooky--not only do they have all the standard stuff like infra red, intersquad radio, etc., but they also have friend and enemy info (blue army/red army) and targeting all in one HUD.  And yes, the HUD follows eye movements.  Couple all of this to a "mother ship" helicoptor with modular weapons systems and what have you got?

A real-life combat video game with real-life opponents that die, that's what.

That 10 man squad is consequently able to function as one "organism" with this kind of setup, as if it had one mind directing every individual soldier.  Well, they are human and fallible after all, so things can go wrong, but you get the general idea.

This is not SF, this is not way off in the future.  It is real and right now.  It will be deployed in Afghanistan this year by Germany.

If you want to check out the company that makes it, wikipedia RHINEMETALL.  Turns out they predate the 3rd Reich and still make tons of weapons and weapon systems for Germany.

You will NOT find that combat system on their website, but I tracked it down to "IdZ" which is the name of it on Wikipedia.  For some reason the video showing it off has been deleted on Youtube.   Ahem.  I wonder why?  (nudge nudge, wink wink).

If you want to go further, you are going to have to speak fluent German.  I didn't see English as an alternative on their web page, but maybe I just missed it.  It's possible.

Heh!  The future is NOW, it seems.  Who would have thought it?
