Re:High Speed Hesitation

When riding at 65-80 miles per hour the bike will hesitate, as if it had a
momentary loss of gas. The peculiar thing is, it'll happen frequently for
about 25 miles, then nothing for another 100 miles. My hose is only a year
old. The tank may be dropping some rust into the carbs. It seemed to me
that this would always be worst on a full tank.

======================

I've experienced this a few times during my 38 years of ridding my '71 R75.
In my case it has always followed a long ride in hard rain or leaving it
parked exposed to hard rain. Every time I removed the float bowls and found
a pocket of water rolling around the bottom of the bowl. The problem was
solved by dumping the bowl. Each time I had this problem I rechecked the
bowls after riding a while and did not see any water, indicating to me that
the water was coming in through the carburetor(s). That could indicate a
problem with the plastic tubes linking the carbs to the filter box or be the
result of a poor fitting or modified air filter box.

The increased presence of alcohol in gas will help absorb the water, but
there is a limit.

I routinely remove the bowls and inspected them when the bike has been
exposed to rain and normally do not find water. Additionally I remove and
empty the bowls back into the tank when I know the bike will be setting for
more than a week or two. This practice has resulted in clean bowls and
absolutely no varnish buildup over my 38 years of ridding this bike.
