Hello,
Earth Day 2012 is scheduled for the weekend of April 21-22. Arbor Day is April
27. Global Youth Service Day is April 20-22. This is the perfect time for
4-Hers in most parts of the US to plan their Spring tree planting events. If
the kids identify tree planting as their April community service, they have
plenty of time to organize. For example,
1. Form a committee
2. Determine the location to plant the trees: a park, school, church, farm,
ranch, yards, etc.
3. Figure out the species of trees to plant. We recommend native and locally
adapted trees. Experts from the local Cooperative Extension office can help.
4. Make a plan to water and care for the trees for a year or two until they are
well established.
5. Identify funding sources for the event, such as the club treasury,
fundraisers, contributions and donations, discounts from vendors, etc.
6. Include an educational component to this service-learning project. For some
ideas, see: www.4hmilliontrees.org and
https://sites.google.com/site/reforestingsanbrunoresidents/home .
7. Get ready to get outside, get dirty, and have some fun!
Clubs should register their trees with 4HMT so the kids get credit for their
work by filling out the secure online form on the Join Us page of the 4-H
Million Trees Project website.
