THREE LILITHS INFO

There are 3 astrological points with the name Lilith: asteroid
Lilith, Black Moon Lilith and Dark Moon Lilith. They are all called
Lilith because the way you interpret them in a chart is related to
the Lilith story.

This is info I have compiled on the 3 Liliths. It was revised
June 12, 2006. In this revision most of the material stays the same
but I did completely revise the freeware section and added a few
other things. Future revisions will be posted at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/3Liliths If you have received this by e-
mail, then you have subscribed and will get them automatically.

There are 5 sections here:
1. General info about the legend of Lilith
2. Asteroid Lilith
3. Black Moon Lilith
4. Dark Moon Lilith
5. Freeware

1. LEGEND OF LILITH

There are many different versions of the Lilith legend. I am
calling it a legend because Lilith is not actually mentioned in the
Bible or in Hebrew scripture either. The version of Lilith we know
today is as the first wife of Adam, before Eve.

There are many versions and interpretations of the "biblical"
Lilith. As the first wife of Adam she refused to be subordinate to
him. She refused to lie beneath him in sexual relations. She wanted
to lie side by side or on top. When he tried to force her she used her
powers to fly away. This part of her story has interested many women
today . They like to think of Lilith as a feminist heroine, saying
she was courageous and asserting her equality. However, in the
original story she was more a symbol of the psychologically damaged.
If you interpret the Liliths in a chart as heroic or admirable it will
not be accurate. The Liliths in your chart operate as places where
you are having trouble, where you don't fit in with the norm.

After Adam refused to have her as his wife, she ran off and
mated with many demons, which was strictly against God's will. God
sent 3 angels to her to get her to stop but she didn't obey so He
started killing her children at the rate of 100 per day. She went mad
with grief and started killing other people's children. Painful
issues surrounding children, birth, unsuitable sexual partners and
parts of your life where you just can't function like others do are
Lilith issues.

See http://www.ucalgary.ca/~elsegal/Shokel/950206_Lilith.html
for an article explaining why this version is not a part of Hebrew
scripture but is part of a medieval writing the author thinks may be
anti-Jewish satire.

Probably the earliest version of Lilith is from Mesopotamia in
the 13 -15th centuries BC where she was the Goddess of Death in the
form of an owl. She was called Lilith because it means "screech owl"
(See Marija Gimbutas' book The Language of the Goddess, p. 191, for
photos of prehistoric owl death goddess pottery.) So in the middle
ages someone probably took this prehistoric belief and made it into a
biblical one, making Lilith the first wife of Adam, before Eve.
Lilith became the woman from hell, the anti-female.

At about the same time someone writing in the Jewish tradition
also wrote about her. In The Book of Lilith by Barbara Black Koltuv,
Ph.D., she says most of the writings about Lilith come from "the
Zohar, The Book of Splendor, a Kabbalistic work of the 13th century
(AD), by men, warning other men against her powers." Koltuv is one
of those who tries to transform Lilith into a feminist heroine. She
discusses many forms of the Lilith myth with footnotes and has a
lengthy bibliography at the end.

It is interesting that Lilith appears about the same time in
both cultures. In the late 1200's there were massive worldwide famines
which continued into the 1300's and weakened the population, leading
to the Black Plague. My thinking is that this may have caused a
collective feeling that Mother Earth was starving them, and then
killing them, so that the image of the baby-killing Lilith appeared.

For articles on the Lilith story go to:
http://www.lilith.demon.nl/lilithoverview.html Scroll past the Dutch
part and you will get to an English explanation of Lilith in the
Bible and myth. Further down on the page are nearly 200 links to
articles and other sites on Lilith.

Terry MacKinnell writes that he has found references to Lilith
in Sumerian mythology in The Drowned Continent of Southeast Asia by
Stephen Oppenheimer, a Phoenix paperback first published in Great
Britain by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in 1998 From `Eden in the East'
Pages 438 - 440, "In this crowded tree, the notorious Lilith, first
wife of Adam, mother of demons, temptress, succubus and snatcher of
newborn children, made her first(un-explained) appearance in world
literature as a tree spirit. In this baby-snatching role she was
identical with Puntianak of Southeast Asia and Leplepsepsep of
Vanuatu to the east. Fertility goddess Inanna was not happy with the
crowded unfruitful tree in her garden and got Gilgamesh to strike
the tree down with his great axe. The snake was also struck down,
whilst the bird escaped with its young to the mountains, and Lilith
was banished to the desert..... Enigmatic as this early Sumerian myth
is, the context places a genetic link with Genesis, with the tree-of-
life triad and with the Moon goddess...... Tree-spirit Lilith shares
some of her child-snatching manifestations with a dark side of Mother
Holle, and could represent in the Sumerian myth a displaced and
vilified mother fertility goddess." Terry says, "All Sumerian myths
predate Genesis as much of the early Old Testament is just a rehash
of earlier Sumerian stories (eg Noah). Sumerian myths cannot date
later than the 3rd millenium BC while nothing was documented in the
Old Testament before the 1st millenium BC. The Garden of Eden myth
is just one of a number of variations of many much older myths.

2. LILITH THE ASTEROID

The glyph for Lilith the asteroid is a straight horizontal line
with 4 small vertical lines sticking up from it, sort of like an
upturned rake head, and then on the right below the horizontal line
is a very small mark like a capital L (or in some cases a V). Some
say it is an upturned hand. When you are writing about the asteroid
you can just say Lilith. It takes about 5 years for Lilith to travel
through all 12 signs, since it does retrograde a lot.

The following books contain material that help to interpret the
asteroid Lilith in a chart:

Demetra George, Asteroid Goddesses, p. 189-190.
J. Lee Lehman, The Ultimate Asteroid Book, p. 76-8.
Martha Lang-Wescott, Mechanics of the Future: Asteroids. $22.95

Martha's book contains more info on Lilith than other books and
has interpretation of aspects of Lilith to other planets and
asteroids. It is real gem, truly brilliant and original. Not
available in bookstore chains but from her website,
http://www.treehousemountain.com, and from Astrology Center of
America, www.astroamerica.com which gives great summaries of all
her books at http://www.astroamerica.com/wescott.html. Martha's
website also gives short meanings of a large number of lesser known
asteroids. Phone orders: Treehouse Mountain: (307) 3879680 or
Astrology Center of America: (800) 475-2272

Most computer programs have lots of asteroids but if you want an
asteroid ephemeris in print, Martha Lang Wescott has 2 ephemerides
with 16 asteroids in each volume. They are called Asteroid Mechanics,
vol. 1 & 2. Lilith is in vol. 2. Order from her website or from
Astrology Center of America, above, although the latter has been
charging $3 more for these due to the fact that Martha makes these
herself, which is expensive, and cannot give as much discount to
other dealers as she can on her other books.

An online asteroid ephemeris generator is at
http://ephemeral.info/eph If the asteroid you want is not listed,
click on the Add Asteroid link and it will be added to the list
immediately. Scroll down to see the asteroid calculation is at the
bottom of the page. You can leave the preset selections as they are
if you want the answer as it would appear in an ordinary chart. A
slightly different version is at http://ephemeral.info/oldeph/

Mark A. Holmes has written an article on Hidalgo, Pandora and
Lilith at http://www.geocities.com/mahtezcatpoc/hidpanli.html He also
has articles on other asteroids on this site.

3. BLACK MOON LILITH

What is BML? Black Moon Lilith is a point in the moon's orbit.
It is not a body in the sky. It is the lunar apogee, the farthest
point that the Moon gets from Earth. The mean Black Moon Lilith moves
about 39 degrees per year or about 3 deg 8 min per month. The true
Black Moon varies greatly, since it retrogrades a lot. If you look at
a Black Moon ephemeris, you can see that from Jan 1 to Dec 31 of any
year the true can move anywhere from 9 deg. in a year to over 70
degrees. It takes approx. 9 years to complete one pass through all 12
signs. When you are writing about it you can spell out Black Moon
Lilith and then use Black Moon or abbreviate BML. If you just say
Lilith you are referring to the asteroid. Some people say BML is the
point midway between the lunar apogee and the Earth, the so-
called "empty focus". Using a midpoint between the Earth and the
lunar apogee doesn't seems like it would be a valid astrological
point and since that point is the same as the lunar apogee from the
point of view of the Earth, there seems to be no logical reason for
it.

Glyphs for BML: The glyph is a black third quarter Moon with a
black cross below. The tips of the black Moon point to the right. The
glyph on Win*Star is reversed. The points of the Moon face west
instead of east. Win*Star gives the true BML. The Win*Star
programmer said they started using this reversed glyph years ago as a
way to distinguish between the Swiss true position and the more
commonly available mean position. However, Win*Star is the only one
who uses this version of the glyph. I e-mailed Win*Star for this
update to see if this was still the case but no one answered me.

Software: Janus gives the mean position. I e-mailed them to
find out if their new version still only has the mean but they never
replied. Solar Fire v. 4 & 5 give the mean position but Solar Fire
v. 6 gives both the mean and true positions. Win*Star gives the true
position. Halloran's software gives both true and mean positions.
Astrodienst, at www.astro.com gives the mean position. The reason
most software and most articles use the mean position is because the
calculations for the mean position have been available since the
1920's, while the true position has only been available for about 10
years so most astrologers using it have never tried the true. See
the freeware section at the end for other options.

Mean vs. True: The mean position of BML is it's average
position. The true position is where it actually is. This is similar
to the difference between true and mean positions of the nodes of the
Moon. The difference between BML true and mean positions can vary up
to 30 degrees, so sometimes the mean and true will be in different
signs or houses in the same chart. The mean does not retrograde but
the true does. The true position can move up to 4 deg per day or it
can stay at the same degree for several days. When using the true it
is important to get an accurate calculation. Besides AstrAstr and
Riyal freeware (see Freeware section, below) the only way to do that
without software is to use the Swiss ephemeris online, directions
below.

Swiss Ephemeris online: To find the true position of BML for
your birth date and time, go to
http://www.astro.com/swisseph/swetest.htm and follow these directions.
If you have any trouble please let me know.
1. Start Date: Convert birth date to European style: May 3, 1958
becomes 3-5-1958. Enter this in Start Date.
2. Steps: Enter 1 to get the BML position for only the
birthdate in question. Entering 30 will give you 30 days worth of
data.
3. Step size: Enter 1, that gives you each day.
4. Planet Selection: Enter AB. This gives mean lunar apogee
(mean BML) and osculating lunar apogee (true BML). (For Dark Moon
Lilith enter "w" without the quote marks instead of AB)
5. Leave Swiss Ephemeris selected.
6. Output format: Enter: tPZS
7. Convert the birth time to Universal Time. Example: A birth
time of 8:01 PM Pacific Daylight Time (+ 7) on Feb. 23, 1958, would
be 03:01 Universal Time on Feb 24, 1958. (First convert to military
time, so 8:01 PM becomes 20:01, then add 7 for PDT to get 27:01, then
subtract 24 hours to get 03:01 the next morning). Enter this under
Other Options as: -ut03:01. If you have a rectified time that includes
seconds you can enter that as: -ut03:01:15.
8. After you submit your data, you will be sent to another
page. On this page the mean is the top line and the true ("osc") is
on the bottom line. The true can be either direct or retrograde. If
it is retrograde you will see a minus sign before the last set of
numbers on the line. If it is direct there will be no minus sign.
9. Optional step, adding elevation: You don't need to enter the
coordinates unless you are using the topocentric system, where the
elevation above or below sea level is taken into account. To do this
use a decimal point between degrees and minutes and preface with a -
sign if it is western or southern and a + sign if eastern or northern.
Use meters for the elevation, not miles. Example: If the place
coordinates are 135w15, 57n03, and the elevation is 12.42 meters you
would enter it as: -topo(-135.25,+57.05,12.42) To enter the time and
coordinates together enter: -ut15:01:00 -topo(-135.25,+57.05,12.42)
To convert miles to meters, 1 meter = .062137 miles, so 20 miles would
be 12.4274 meters. Don't enter the coordinates without the elevation
because the program will assume you are in Zurich, elevation 400
meters, and that will give you incorrect results.

Why bother with the true? It does seem to be more accurate. I
started using BML in my charts after listening to Verena Bachman's
tapes (below). She uses mean BML and I have Solar Fire, which gives
the mean, and over the next 2 years I found it was a very important
negative place. Verena uses very wide orbs. I think the reason you
need to use wide orbs with the mean position is that the true is
really what is working and by using wide orbs you get the true more
often without knowing it. Five years ago I got a true BML ephemeris
and since I was in the process of interviewing people by e-mail about
the meaning of BML in their charts as preparation for writing an
article, I started using both true and mean in the interviews to see
which worked better. Every time true has worked better. Then I
started using the Swiss Ephemeris online for more accurate placement
because the true can move up to 4 degrees per day. Using that I found
the orbs actually seem to be very small. At present the orb seems to
be no more than 3 degrees.

Rx or direct? Using the true also brings up the question of
what BML Rx means. At first I was guessing that since BML is a
negative place the Rx position might give a special gift to the sign
and house as well as the usual negative meanings. After further work
this doesn't seem to be the case. The Rx instead seems to indicate a
past life described by the sign and house. I will give an example of
this in my article, which will be posted at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/3Liliths If you received this by e-
mail, you will receive the article automatically by e-mail when it is
posted.

BML TAPES:
Verena Bachman has 2 tapes from UAC 98 on Lilith the Black Moon.
1. Lilith: the Great Goddess in Everyday Life (#41HG) and
2. Lilith, The Great Goddess in Relationship (#42HG).
Listening to these tapes in 1998 was what started me using
Black Moon Lilith in my charts. She uses the mean BML position.
Available from Audio Master, 85 Queen Anne Dr., Mableton, GA 30126 ,
Phone 770-948-2475, FAX 770-948-8005, In 1998 these were available
for $9 per tape + $3 shipping for 1st tape and .50 each additional
tape but check for the latest prices.

Tapes from NORWAC:
Demetra George, The Enigma of the Three Astrological Liliths.
M. Kelley Hunter, Lilith Speaks: The Dark Goddess of Our Time
I have not heard either tape. If you are thinking of ordering
the Kelley Hunter tape you might want to check out her article first
at: http://www.mountainastrologer.com/hunter.html The BML ephemeris
links in the article give the mean position, not the true.

BML ARTICLES:

An excellent article on BML in the signs, written by Marie
Dominique Villard and using the true, has been removed from the site
where I last found it and since I cannot find it posted anywhere
else, I posted it on this site http://groups.yahoo.com/group/3Liliths
because it is well worth reading.

Simon Wickham-Smith has a very interesting short article on the
role of true BML in transgendered charts at:
http://astroqueer.tripod.com/articles/lilith.html

A lecture by German astrologer Antonia Langsdorf on BML is at:
http://www.antonialangsdorf.de/dateien/astrologie-antonia-langsdorf-
essay.php She focuses on the chart of Marianne Bachmeier who shot
her daughter's murderer. She uses mean BML.

The June/July 2002 issue of The Mountain Astrologer Magazine,
pg. 29, has an article called "The Lilith Archetype: A Feminist
Mythology" by Kate O'Donnell. She converts the "Biblical Lilith" into
a feminist heroine and shows how her version of the Lilith story fits
the lives of 4 women prominent in the feminist movement. But exactly
how the astrological Liliths work in the charts is not really
explained. Long on theory, short on practical astrology. An
ephemeris for mean BML 1931-2006 is included.

The Mountain Astrologer Magazine also has an interesting 2 part
article by Claude Weiss called Black Moon Lilith Through the Houses.
Part 1 is in the Aug/Sept 1999 issue and part 2 is in the Oct/Nov 1999
issue. You can order back issues from them at
http://www.mountainastrologer.com/back.html but these issues are sold
out. I have e-mailed TMA a couple of times asking them to put his
articles on the TMA website with no reply. If enough people request
it maybe they will.

M. Kelley Hunter also wrote an article for Mountain Astrologer
in the April 1999 issue which is accompanied by an ephemeris for
monthly placement of Black Moon Lilith (mean) for 1900 - 2006. It is
at http://www.mountainastrologer.com/hunter.html The Mountain
Astrologer ephemeris uses the mean BML from Solar Fire 3, while Solar
Fire 4 uses mean BML calculated in a slightly different way, which
makes a difference of about 1 degree. Kelley has expanded her
article into a pamphlet published by ACS, for $3.95, but it doesn't
have an ephemeris.

An article at http://horusset.com/RIKB/Lillith.pdf examines BML
in the charts of 14 famous women known for their open sexuality or
rejection of male dominance, which he thinks is a Lilith personality.
It is downloaded via Adobe Acrobat and a graph at the end gives their
names and a few details about their charts but no birth data is
given. The author spends much time saying Dark Moon Lilith doesn't
exist but gives no source for his information and also spends a lot
of time on the mythology so you have to go to the end of the article
for his conclusions about the similarities in the women's charts,
which are few but interesting (one is that none of the women has
Lilith in a mutable sign). He is using the mean BML.

Marc Beriault has an article called "The Dark Moon" on the
Considerations Magazine website. He is using the mean Black Moon
Lilith on Solar Fire and gives the correct glyph for the Black Moon
but he says it should be called the Dark Moon. Since astrologers in
Europe have been calling the lunar apogee Black Moon for about 100
years and astrologers since Sepharial have been calling the dark
satellite of the Earth the Dark Moon almost 100 years, it is a little
late to try to change the terminology now. Click on:
http://www.considerations-mag.com/artif.htm and scroll down to the
article. If this doesn't open correctly you probably don't have Adobe
Acrobat 5 installed. In that case click on the Adobe Acrobat link
there and install that first. See below in the Dark Moon section for
a summary of his ideas on origin of Dark Moon Lilith.

BML BOOKS AND EPHEMERIDES IN PRINT:

These are 3 French books which might be translated into English
at some point:
1 - The Return of Lilith, The Black Moon, by Joelle de
Gravelaine
2 - The Nodes of the Moon and the Black Moon in Astrology, by
Marie-Thérèse des Longchamps
3 - The Black Moon - A Forbidden World by Jacqueline Aime

When using BML ephemerides, remember the true moves up to 4
degrees per day so you cannot rely on an ephemeris in print to be
totally accurate.

The Black Moon Book by Santoni, George & Suyterman, Sum Press,
$12, includes an ephemeris, credited to Santoni, which gives both mean
& true positions, 1910-2010. The time is not listed, it is probably
midnight GMT but there is no way to tell. Includes notes about the
Black Moon by Lee A. Suyterman. Available online from Astrology
Center of America at http://www.astroamerica.com/planet4.html

The New International Ephemeris, 1900-2050, gives true and mean
daily positions of BML. Also available is Ephemerides of True Black
Moon, 1910-2010 by Francis Santoni, in French. Both are available at
http://www.aureas.com for those in Europe, or from Astrology Center
of America http://www.astroamerica.com .

4. DARK MOON LILITH

This is a "second moon" to the Earth. It is a non-reflective
body(hence the name Dark Moon) that orbits the Earth about every 119
days. It was first sighted in the 1600's. Some people don't believe
the Dark Moon is a planetary body because the orbit is too regular. It
could be some type of equipment, but since it was first sighted in
the 1600's, it is nothing modern. Some people think it is a ball of
space dust, which would explain why it doesn't reflect the Sun as our
Moon does. For this reason a lot of astrologers will not use it. But
if it works in the chart and it is not a planetary body, then that
means that all kinds of space debris could have some influence. Every
once in a while someone on the internet comes up with the thought
that the Dark Moon could actually be the asteroid Cruithne but it
isn't. Their orbits are vastly different.

The glyph for Dark Moon Lilith is a circle or zero with a
diagonal line like a forward slash, cutting through it. In writing use
Dark Moon Lilith at first, then Dark Moon or DML to avoid confusion.

Dr. Georges Waltemath, a German astronomer, was the first to
document it in 1898. The astrologer Sepharial compiled an ephemeris
using his data, which Delphine Jay, Ivy Goldstein-Jacobson and Mae
Wilson-Ludlum all used for their Lilith ephemerides. Sepharial's
calculations differ slightly from the original Waltemath
calculations. Solar Fire, one of the few programs to include Dark
Moon Lilith uses the original Waltemath calculations and has
previously agreed with the Swiss Ephemeris calculations. However, the
Swiss Ephemeris has changed their calculation so that it no longer
matches Solar Fire v.4. Solar Fire v. 5 & 6 now agree with the Swiss
Ephemeris calculations.

In 2003 asked Solar Fire mfgrs. which version is correct.
Graham Dawson, programmer for Solar Fire said, "I now believe that
the data used by the Swiss Ephemeris calculation of Waltemath's Dark
Moon is probably a more accurate representation of what Waltemath
actually intended than what is currently used in Solar Fire.... I
originally supplied Dieter Kock (a Swiss Ephemeris author) with my
copy of Waltemath's original tabulations. After some discussion with
Dieter, I agreed with him that his own interpretation (which differed
slightly from the one I included in Solar Fire) was a better one."

Graham says, "However, the issue of the true accuracy of this
body is not straightforward, for the following reasons:
1) Waltemath's original orbital data contained some ambiguity
and therefore requires some subjective interpretation
2) A study of Waltemath's actual observations (on which his
data was based)show that they do not fit his proposed orbital data
very well
3) The actual observations he used have been questioned for
validity and accuracy
4) The body in question is considered by astronomers to be
purely "hypothetical" anyway, and therefore not observable. So I
hope you can see why the issue of accuracy of this body is a very
different one from the accuracy of the positions of planets and other
precisely observable objects."

You can find Dark Moon Lilith online by following the
directions on using the Swiss Ephemeris under the Black Moon Lilith
section, above, except instead of putting in AB for planet selection
you put in "w", but without the quote marks. When I do this for
myself Swiss Ephemeris shows my Dark Moon Lilith at 27 Leo, Sepharial
(via Delphine Jay's ephemeris) shows it at 14 Leo and Solar Fire v. 4
shows it as 8 Leo. Astrologically, this is a huge difference. It
changes the house, the aspects, and in other charts it could easily
change the sign. Solar Fire 5 & 6 now agree with the Swiss
Ephemeris and that is what I use now.

If you find an ephemeris and are wondering which version you are
looking at, using Bill Clinton (Aug 19 1946 8:51 AM CST +6) and
George W. Bush (July 6, 1946 7:26 AM EDT +4): Bill Clinton's Dark
Moon Lilith is at 7 Libra 25 in Solar Fire 4, 27 Libra 53 in Delphine
Jay's ephemeris(using Sepharial's calculations), and 27 Libra 56 in
the Swiss Ephemeris. This looks like the Swiss Ephemeris matches
Sepharial's calculations, but when you look at George W. Bush's Dark
Moon, Solar Fire 4 shows 5 Gemini 57, Delphine Jay, using Sepharial,
shows it at 15 Gemini 00, and the Swiss Ephemeris shows it at 22 Gem
53. Interestingly, in view of Bush's difficulties with foreign
countries and other religions, all his Liliths are in Gemini-Sag. His
asteroid Lilith is 16 Sag17 R, BML mean 6 Sag 54, and BML true 1
Sag 34

See also Marc Beriault's article in Considerations magazine, p,
6, http://www.considerations-mag.com/artif.htm where he gives an
entirely different origin for Dark Moon Lilith, but since there are
no examples of placements it is impossible to tell whether he is
talking about what Waltemath observed or not. He doesn't mention Dr.
Waltemath or Sepharial. He says Giovanni Battista Riccioli, a
Jesuit, (1598-1671) announced the discovery of a small body that
reappeared on the face of the Moon every night and published an
ephemeris for it. But after several years someone noticed that a
defect in the telescope produced a false image when it was pointed in
a certain direction and that is what produced the image. The article
says Riccioli told his fellow astrolomers of the error and it was
forgotten. Then in 1927 a French Cabbalist named Robert Ambelain found
the ephemeris and published it with calculations for the 20th
century. He called it Lilith. Later some American astrologers
published an ephemeris in the US. Beriault says it is discussed in
the history of science section of the Encyclopedia de la Pleides,
1957. I have searched the web for any information to confirm this.
Information on Riccioli and Amelain I have been able to find does not
mention them in connection with any ephemeris, with Lilith, or with
any discovery of another planetary body. If anyone knows anything
more about this, please let me know so I can include it here.

A fascinating article written by Sepharial about the time
Waltemath discovered DML in 1898, called "The New Satellite Lilith",
is at http://members.tripod.com/~LdyMyste/lilith.html The first few
paragraphs are on general astrology but after that the rest of the
article is on Dark Moon Lilith. He describes talking to Dr. Waltemath
and gives several examples of men with DML in the 6th house dying in
terrible accidents in the workplace. He also gives directions on how
to calculate DML in your chart by hand, which is very interesting in
giving us a chance to see his thinking at work. He gives examples of
dates when DML is conjunct the Sun so you can compare that with other
ephemerides you may have.

Eric J. Uberseder and Terry MacKinnell both report getting good
results using Sepharial's calculations. Eric has an interesting
article on Dark Moon Lilith's role in illness at:
http://home.epix.net/~tzarathu/Dark%20Moon%20Lilith.html After I read
this I started looking for DML in illness charts and found that it is
always a player, so now I watch for it in electional charts for
surgeries & biopsies, death from illness, etc.

Terry MacKinnell said he started off using Ivy Goldstein-
Jacobson's interpretations but says "Ivy's interpretations told only
half the story. Ivy Goldstein-Jacobson focussed upon the negative or
denial mode of Lilith. The only positive side was a short reference
to the fact that a strong Lilith in a chart made a person more
interesting." Terry related Lilith to the Hindu concept of a 'lila'
and says he realised that "the denial aspect of Lilith only applies
if the person grabs at whatever Lilith signifies in the chart. If the
person is detached, the object of 'desire' is given freely as a
gift." Years later he says he was very pleased to find that Delphine
Jay's interpretations matched his concept developed from the Hindu
lila. He also says Sepharial's DML is "the mainstay of predictions in
progressions. In fact I can usually tell my client what their
question is merely from the progressed DML in their chart based on
its progressed sign, dwaasamsa and aspects to other progressed or
natal planets."

Terry suggests the following as useful literary references to
Lilith and lilas depicting the mythology of Lilith presented in a non-
astrological fashion:
"The Soul of Lilith" by Marie Corelli published by Methuen & Co
Ltd, London 1897
"Lilith" by George MacDonald with an introduction by C.S. Lewis
published by Lion Publishing England
"Lila An Inquiry Into Morals" by Robert M Pirsig author of "Zen
and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" published by Corgi Books

When Jeaninne Akimowa's website was up she had an article
saying the Dark Moon had an orbit rate of 3 hours, 20 min and was
always in eclipse. Her website was removed after she died in March
2002, but she probably read this somewhere. In case you come across
this, there is a small body circling the Earth at the rate of 3
hours, 20 min, the same rate as Jeaninne quoted in her article,
traveling very close to the earth's surface, but it is not the Dark
Moon. Details are at
http://seds.lpl.arizona.edu/nineplanets/nineplanets/hypo.html Click
on The Earth's Second Moon. This article also contains a complete
history of the attempts to locate other Moons, including the Dark
Moon, and includes a bibliography.

The following are books on Dark Moon Lilith:

1. Delphine Jay, Interpreting Lilith, revised about 2003, AFA.
181 pages. This gives explanation and cookbook definitions for Dark
Moon Lilith placements. I have found her interpretations to be very
good.
2. Delphine Jay, The Lilith Ephemeris 1900-2000 AD. The
calculations are from Sepharial's calculations.
3. Ivy M. Goldstein-Jacobson, Dark Moon Lilith in Astrology.
If an ephemeris is included it is based on Sepharial.
4. Mae R. Wilson-Ludlum, Lilith Insight: New Light on the Dark
Moon, AFA. If she has an ephemeris in this, it is also from Sepharial.

Zolar's Encyclopedia of Ancient and Forbidden Knowledge (1984),
Chapter 7, "The Dark Satellite", p. 108-22, may or may not be about
Dark Moon Lilith. He doesn't mention the word Lilith or Sepharial or
Waltemath. He says the Dark Satellite is the "orb of death" and says
it has an organization all it's own where moral consciousness is
entirely lacking and "throughout this whole sphere are numerous races
of spiritual beings, ...who are...the producers of the greatest
portion of the suffering and misery which afflicts all humanity." He
doesn't give any examples of calculations in charts so it is hard to
know exactly what he is referring to. I mention this because a reader
thought this chapter was truly fascinating and called it to my
attention. I personally am unable to find a way to use this material
in charts, which is my main focus.

These tapes by Demetra George sound like they might be on Dark
Moon Lilith but I believe they are similar to her book, Mysteries of
the Dark Moon, which is not about Dark Moon Lilith or any other
Lilith, but on the psychological "dark" side of the psyche,
represented by the hidden side of our regular astrological Moon. I
list these here so you will not get confused and think they are
something they are not.
Demetra George, Dark Moon Phase of the Goddess.
Demetra George, Mysteries of the Dark Moon, (2 tape set)

Sisters of the Dark Moon, a book by G. Wood is also not on Dark
Moon Lilith but explains the psychological shadow side of each Moon
sign.

5. FREEWARE:

Freeware is usually not perfect so I have listed the pros and
cons as they relate to the subject of the 3 Liliths. I list the
easier to use programs first.

Most freeware doesn't come with an atlas so if you need to find
the longitude and latitude and time zone for a city world-wide there
is one at: http://www.astro.com/cgi-bin/atlw3/aq.cgi?lang=e

1. AstrAstr is an easy to use freeware program that has
interpretations for natal planets and also for transits to your natal
planets (up to a year's worth). This would be an excellent choice
for someone who is starting to learn astrology. Or for those who
don't like to tweak programs. There is a lot you can do with it
easily. The author has recently updated it to list both mean and
true BML. The default position is the true. Asteroid Lilith is also
listed. Only DML is not listed.

To get asteroid Lilith click on "Wheels", then "90d wheel -natal".
Then click on "Display symbols" and on "Display natal pos." You will
get a text list of the
positions of planets, transneptunians, mean and true BML and some
asteroids, including Lilith. To download go to
http://www.astrowin.org/astro_sw.htm Click on AstrAstr. After you
install it, go back to the same page and install the Swiss
Ephemeris. Click on "Download astrastr_ephems.zip" This takes
15.1MB but if you don't want the asteroids and the transneptunians but
just the basics you can use it without installing the Swiss
Ephemeris. The program has some cities listed but for most
locations you will need to find the latitude and longitude first on a
locator, above. There is a way to incorporate the ACS atlas if you
already have it installed. The author also has several other
freeware astrology programs that are worth a look.

2. Canopus is freeware that gives excellent interpretations for Black
Moon Lilith. Canopus is an easy to use program but it only works on
Windows 95, 98 and 2000. You can download it at
http://clairvision.org and click on freeware at the bottom of the
page. The interpretations are in the Help section. Click on
Astrological Interpretations. There are interpretation for BML under
both the Aspects and Houses sections. While the interpretations are
excellent, the actual placement of Black Moon Lilith in the chart is
in error. Don't use it. It is neither mean nor true nor the asteroid
nor Dark Moon Lilith. I e-mailed Canopus about it in Jan 2002, and
they said the author is not going to correct anything in the present
Canopus because he is working on a new expanded software program.
Another e-mail May 2006 says they are still working on it and can't
tell yet when it will be coming out.

3. ZET 8 ("Lite" version is freeware, you pay to upgrade to "Pro")
lists BML but only the mean. It is easy to use and is updated often.
http://zaytsev.com/downloads.html You can also download the asteroid
file and then you will get 8000 asteroids from the Swiss Ephemeris
incorporated into the program. This program has extras like a map of
the world with your chart location marked and a map of
constellations, fixed stars, the planets and an I Ching module where
you can ask questions (for those who don't have time for horary).

4. Starlite is a very simple program that gives you a wheel, aspects
and some other info all on one page but has no Liliths or other
features. www.AstroSoftware.com

The next two programs require the user to take additional steps
to get them ready to use. While experienced users of the previous
versions of these programs will have no trouble, inexperienced people
and/or those with no Virgo in their chart may get discouraged, even
despondent.

5. Riyal is freeware that calculates all 3 Liliths including both the
mean and true BML. There is a Windows version 2.4 and a DOS version.
You can download it at http://www.expreso.co.cr/centaurs/riyal.html
On the same page there is a link "read the documentation". It tells
you what is included in the program and a lot of practical
information for using the it. It also tells you how to install the
fonts which you need to do to get a wheel on the screen. If you don't
need a wheel and just want a list of the placement of lots of things
you don't get in other programs, you can skip installing the fonts.
There is now an online group you can join on the site (click on
What's New) to discuss issues with Riyal.

If you have older versions you should delete them first. Click
on "Riyal for Windows" to download. Go to My Computer then to to C:
drive and click on Riyal_for_Windows. You will see the contents of
the file. Right click the icon for Riyal32.exe and send to desktop
to create a shortcut there. Open the program, when click on "This is
freeware" button. Go to Menu and select Radix. Enter your data, but
when you get to latitude, check geocentric, otherwise it is preset to
heliocentric. It is also preset to Placidus but you can change it by
going to Houses. When you enter the date remember to enter it Euopean
style, with the day first and be sure all the digits are filled. Feb
5, 1958 is entered as 05-02-1958. You can check "expected time zone"
but I get better results converting to UT. To do this a time of 2:08
PM PST would be entered as 22:08(convert to military time, 14:08,
then add 8 hours for PST). You will need to add longitude and
latitude manually, there is no atlas.

You can click on the "Right Click" button at the bottom of the
screen to save the data ("copy to clipboard") but it is
only saved for the session. Once you exit from the program it is
gone. To close the program, click on Disk, then Exit. This program
is revised from time to time, so check for the latest upgrades.

To find the Liliths, click on Astronomical Data under Tables.
Mean BML is listed as "mean apogee", true BML is listed as "true
apogee". DML Swiss Ephemeris version is listed as "Dark Moon S.E".
DML Solar Fire 4 version is listed as "Dark Moon S.F.". Sepharial's
version is not listed. To find asteroid Lilith, you have to install
the asteroid file, "named.dat" which you can click on in the "read
the documentation" page. You get 12,000+ named asteroids.

6. The reason I list Astrolog 5.41G is because it has Windows, DOS,
Mac and Linux versions and because so many people use it and need to
know what the Lilith listing is. There is only one and it is for
mean BML but the glyph shown is for Dark Moon Lilith. The program
calls it Lilith. There are no placements for DML or the true BML or
asteroid Lilith. . The main download site
http://www.astrolog.org/astrolog.htm gives you version 5.40 Upgrade
to 5.41G at
http://astrolog.offline.ee/astrolog/changed/changed.shtml Last
version May 18, 2002.

After installation, open the file, right click on Astrolog.exe and
send a shortcut to the desktop if it isn't already there. When you
first start Astrolog you will see a default text chart for place and
time. You can edit it to set your own default time zone and longitude
and latitude by clicking on Info and then Default Info. Cast a chart
by clicking on Info and then Set Chart Info. If the chart is
distorted click on Graphics, then Square Screen.

If you have any additional information, corrections,
suggestions or questions on anything I have written here, please e-
mail me. You may send this to others or post on lists or groups but
please give me credit as the author. Thank you.
