Response to Question on Alumni Group

Hello Dan,

Thanks for your comments and questions. Yahoo groups were our first attempt at
improved communications. Later the web site was established, however with most
folks the old email lists rule. I keep the group sites for completeness and
often I update them, however involvement of contributors is always lacking.

We have had some very interesting enjoyable contacts like message 25, an alumni
who moved to USA made long lost contact with our group site.

Our alumni are often invited to our social events such as BP dinner and such.

As with all Scouters, there are those who remain active forever and those with
fewer aspirations. It takes a lot of work to keep track of everyone. For the
31st it is mainly a social function. Our fundraising is well established with
major activities being Christmas Tree sales, 900 Parade seats, and popcorn.

My best suggestion perhaps is to provide all forms of communications in a hope
that one may be the right choice for the member. Most recently I have included a
calendar to allow sections to post events on the web site
(http://www.localendar.com). Again it takes creativity to get involvement.

As for email, each section leader chooses his own methods, in addition as
registrar, I set out a central coordination to post messages to all sections
from group. At the end of each scouting year the list is archived and a new list
established. For big events, lists from past years are included to help contact
inactive youth and parents. This method allows contact with active and inactive
members. Anyone specifically requesting removal is promptly removed, rarely
happens.

This can be lot of work and requires a volunteer who is computer savvy.. If only
the Yahoo group sites would work, they are so nice.. I tire of the work involved
and I'm always looking for that interested parent or scouter.

Yours in Scouting,

garwin

50 years in our case, and I have thought about finding a way to keep in better
touch with our alumni. Do you have regular communications with your alumni? Do
you look to them for program assistance, funding help or other types of
assistance? Or is it mainly a social function of encouraging people to stay in
touch?
