Hi Lou and all,

I think Larry's n6hpx email address has been hi-jacked/SPAMMED so I have emailed
him off list to let him know and also put on moderation for the moment. The

Hi all,
similar to ON2AD-Pat's summary of the first 6 months, I have analysed my
activity on 30m as follows; of course, a lot of further contacts were had on
other bands but they are of no significance in this group:

Mode QSOs done

PSK31 500 (BPSK and QPSK together)
CW 222
PSK63 175 (BPSK and QPSK together)
RTTY 100
JT65 92 with WSJT
PSK125 68 (BPSK and QPSK together)
CONTESTIA 37
FMHELL (105 and 245) 25
HELL 24
MFSK16 28
THOR 23
OLIVIA 16
DOMINO 12
RTTYM 10
THROB 8
SSTV 7 with MMSSTV
THROBX 7
HELL80 6
MT63 5
AMTOR FEC 5 with MixW
MFSK22 4
MFSK32 4
FSK31 3 with MixW
CHIP64 and CHIP128 each 2

and 1 QSO each in the following modes

MFSK4 / PSK16 / PSK125R / ROS / FSK 63 and 125 / PACTOR-FEC / SLOWHELL / PSK63F
( PSK220F / PSK500 / PSK250 / MFSK11 / WSJT-DIANA / DOMINOF / MFSK8 / PSKHELL /
MFSK8. Some were skeds, some were replies to other hams calling with MixW and
Multipsk.
Total QSOs 1402 on 30m done mostly with FLDIGI. Yet I doubt that I shall achieve
a similar number for the 2nd half year due to conditions.

Someone on qrz.com commented on the loud over the horizon radar that's audible
just about everywhere on 30 meters lately. It's gets really loud at times,
registering over S9 at my location. Is it this bad for everyone? With any luck
it won't be a factor for too long.

Congrats Scott.

Yes I accomplished it a while back. I'm waiting for the award to get here from LotW. I think it should have been here by now, maybe it got lost in the mail. Waiting for them to respond to my email about it.

This week I decided to try JT65A with 0.5 watts into my low-slung dipole
(2 meters high).
My QTH is a densely populated village in the center of Malta island,
3km from the sea.
As usual, the European contacts were there, with most reports giving me
S/N <-20dB.
Nobody in the Americas seems to hear me, although incoming signals here
were as usual.
The big surprise was around 00:00 Z on several nights, when I had a QSO
with VK4 with report S/N -20dB
and was also regularly spotted on VK3AMA reverse beacon, even stronger.
Maybe I'll try for WAC with 0.5 watts, that should prove if, with my
simple antenna,
it really is possible to work the world using 0.5 watts on 30 meters.

Hi Robin - No worry about your signal as I can read you nearly all the time; but
to be honest, 500 mW are remarkable! Good luck and dx!

Yes, it can be quite strong. I have not heard it in over a month or so. It usually will destroy the top part of the 30 meter band. It usually doesn't destroy the whole band but it means that you can either operate cw or move to a different band.

It's a royal pain in the neck because it stays on for hours at a time. It's not like the old Russian Woodpecker of the 80's that would plop down for 10 minutes or so.

Some people have reported success in working through the QRM using wideband Olivia.

I have worked through it when it was weak, when it's 10db over S9 it's very hard to deal with.

Sometimes we're lucky and it doesn't last long, other times its on for a long time.

Unfortunately if it's on for more than a few minutes it seems that most people QSY to another band.

73 and good dx

Someone on qrz.com commented on the loud over the horizon radar that's audible just about everywhere on 30 meters lately. It's gets really loud at times, registering over S9 at my location. Is it this bad for everyone? With any luck it won't be a factor for too long.

Hi all,

Just a quick note to let you all know that I will not be able to issue any of
the above mentioned awards for the next 3 weeks.

Although I will have limited access to the internet via my mobile phone, I will
most likely not issue any awards!

If you are really in a hurry, please apply within the next 24 hours and I might
just be able to get them through in time.

I beg you to not re-apply for an award within this 3 week period as this will
only slow things up and fill up my mailbox!

Any group member have any 30 meter PSK or other digital mode contacts to report?

Or does anyone has any comments about the propagation paths in your area of the
World for the last few weeks on the 30 meter band?
(openings, path changes, activity, DX best times, modes, antennas, etc)

Or report 30m digital spots here:

Hello All.,

I was wondering if we could use the WSPR mode as a contact to set up a contact?

I mean some of use wspr as a prop report, antenna analyzer, or just to see how
far we can go. Think about it if we are all running wspr and spot someone we
could try to work them and we would not have to watch a DX cluster. After we see
the WSPR report we then switch over to RTTY, PSK, HELLSCribe, or our favorite
digital mode to try to make contact.

I know WSPR is not consider a "real" contact but since us 30m guys are die hard
operators and band dedicated we can make it a real mode between our band. After
all isn't that how the other modes became a real contact. Started with a few and
became accepted world wide.

Just thoughts from a 30m guy.

Harold/KD8DVY

P.S.

We can make it a contest among ourselves.

WSPR QSO mode was included in WSJT7, but I don't think it really caught on.  It is no longer supported in WSJT9, but it may be of interest to you.

Hi All..

I have had that thought before....and looked at what S/N would be needed on a
WSPR spot if a contact was to be made with that same station using say Olivia..

Think your chances would be better using something like JT65 as the mode and
power is closer to other digital modes.. there is also the option for your own
13 characters to be sent giving some details of mode and freq...you would like
to try....don't forget even Olivia 16/500 has only a -10db or -12db s/n...8/250
is a bit better at around -15db or so..

most WSPR spots are low db and not similar to other modes....and not sure...but
I suspect many are operated with the Ham doing other things or not actually in
the room....JT65 the Operator has to be there to use it...

I'm all for experimentation, however this would be more akin to trying to use a fork as a screwdriver - just not suited for the task.
