Hey, that's great, Ron!
I've been wondering how much I could improve my signal on 30m, and I was thinking about a loop dedicated to the band.  This project has now expanded to trying to get a full wave loop up for 80m hoping to tune it to 30m.  If I had just left the thought as it was, it would be done already!  Funy how that works.
Congratulations on the new FB antenna!
See you on thirty meters!

Yesterday I put up a new multi-band Carolina Windom (160-10-meter) antenna and last night I tried it out on 30 BPSK31.  Before now I would tune my 75-meter dipole for 30.  The first thing I noticed was more signals on the waterfall.

I haven't had much time for QSO's lately, but I have been running
Propnet when I'm around the shack, and it's interesting to see who can
hear me. Last night, my first beacon was copied by stations on both
coasts and one in New Mexico. Now, I need to improve my antenna
situation so I can hear them as well as they hear me. I don't know
where it's coming from, but there is some kind of broadband QRM that
covers the PSK and Propnet frequencies. It's much weaker on the dipole
than it is on my loop. I'm thinking about building a vertical for 30
to see if that would be better.

The best antenna I remember having for 30 meters was a half-wave
sloper (not a so-called 'half sloper'), aimed at Europe, when I was in
California. I haven't heard nearly as many Europeans on 30 since.

A vertical loop would probably be a killer antenna on this band. You'd
only need a support 28 feet high to get the bottom of the loop 10 feet
above ground (using a triangular loop). If you feed it with open wire
line, or mount a remote auto antenna tuner at the feedpoint, it will
work on all bands higher than 10 Mhz.. Hmmm- I might have to try this
myself...

It appears that WB4U and VK2XGJ have had an RF path over the last 24 hours,
according to the 30 meter, 24 hour WW (World Wide) map on http://www.PropNET.org

Congrats!

GM,

Hello all, sorry for not being involved the last month or so but
other things have been taking priority for me.

Is anyone going to make it on the band tonight? I will be in later
tonight and looking. I also have received some qsl cards from some
of you on our contacts on 30mtr psk and will be working on them this
week to get them out to you...thanks for the qsls.

I did make it in on Thursday Night and had a couple ragchew contacts
with a few state-side stations that was fun (one again that said "you
are my first 30 mtr psk contact"...nice to see that!).

Let's keep at this and I really do think that we can increase traffic
or the awareness of folks checking 30mtr for digital traffic when
switching from 20mtrs to 40mtrs (I have made a number of contacts
from folks using 20 or 40 mtr verticals via turner on 30mtrs and they
had good signals here, of course would be better with dedicated 30
mtr antenna but hey they used what they had and it made contacts).

Hope to see some of you on the waterfall tonight on our Sunday Night
30mtr PSK night.

Well I guess Bill ZL3NB has been passing the word around about our
group (hope others will do the same!).

Just wanted to post a 'WELCOME' to our 2 new ZL members that will be
looking for contacts so let's listen up for our DX members on 30 mtrs
digital!

Welcome Jason:

GM,

About a month ago we had a 'core' 30 meter psk/digital group
discussion and although at this time we believe we don't have enough
support for a full blown 30 mtr digital 'club' like 10-10 or 070
digital or the like dedicated for 30 mtr we do believe we have a good
start of getting activity going by just simply posting to other Ham
sites or Ham digital sites that we are on 30 mtr psk giving it a go
and to join in. I think we will need to have a more dedicated core
group if we are to start an official website, give out member number,
awards, nets, etc..we must have many people that want to do this and
not make it a job that we may or may not get dedicated folks to do
all the activities that will be reqired.

An item that was also brought up by the core group was a night or two
a week that we can switch to other digital modes (of course this can
be done at anytime but an annouced night/time and mode they thought
would be nice to try). I think this is a good idea and wonder if
anyone else here in this group things that this would be a good idea,
anyone? I think that an increase of psk activity on 30 mtr is a
good thing but those of use using digital modes know that psk is not
always the best mode in certian band condtions. I think once a week
we could try this if others agree and we can go above or below the
10.140 psk mark and maybe once week announce it will be Saturday Hell
Night or Monday MFSK16 night etc etc...not only are these other
digital modes fun to operate and experiment with they actually might
be better suited for poor band conditions or weak signal work (it
would also give folks that have never used other digital modes other
than psk a chance to get familar with these different digital
modes). Anyone interested?

Thanks

Thanks for the welcome Don, have been calling most days on 10.140
using PSK31/63 also on MSK16 but so far no luck, but at this time it
is difficult from this far South. I run a IC746Pro up to 70w into an
inverted Vee at 50ft, I also see some of the boys are using the WSJT
modes on 10.138 so will have a look, its good for low sig stuff.
Hope to see you on the waterfall.

The band finally came alive this afternoon for awhile for us folk
Down Under....

Worked:
0418Z NB2B Fred/Florida
0441Z k5PAX Harvey/New Mexico Have now wrkd 30/20 and 10M PSK31.
0453Z KE5CO Paul/Texas

Copy pretty good on all stations here with Harvey the strongest with
his magnetic loop.

Did have a KD0AG???? calling but finally had to give it up after
many many tries...I appreciated the effort on that stations part and
would be nice to know what the full call was. His signals were
gaining but so was the local noise.

So seems the time frame around 0400 to 0500Z is ok between ZL/W/VE.

Now listening (0520Z) to David VK4BDJ and Jason ZL2FT having a QSO
on 2008hz...Only bits and pieces from our friend Jason in the North
Island as no short skip between us but David is booming into
Christchurch.

Our Sunset is now 0522Z (5:22PM NZST)

Hopefully by the middle of August and definitely from September
onwards this band should be pretty good for between NZ and the USA
plus Long Path into EU after the spring/fall equinox.

Here's hoping anyway.....Bring on Cycle 24!

Hello All

I thought i better introduce myself.
My name is Jason ,I am located in the Town Of Wanganui which is in
the north island of nz.
I have just got myself an interface for the digi modes (Link all usb
made by BA3DP).
I have been on hf since 2002 and enjoy working dx etc.
My fav band would have to be 15mtrs when it is open, so i look
forward to working lots of digi dx on that band.
I have no antenna up that is cut for 10mhz but instead use my 40mtr
inverted "L" thru the atu to match it up.
I look forward to working many stations on 30mtrs digi modes.
Managed to work Laure VK3AMA on 30mtrs the other day which was
great, my first contact on 30.
Special hi to Bill ZL3NB and Brian ZL4AD, and any other ZL's in the
group.
I look forward to working many of you on this interesting band.

73's and good DX from Jason.
ZL2FT.

Hi, Jason!

I'm not as active as some others around here - and I openly apologize for
that - but it is simply because I am not yet retired. As such, I just don't
find the time to get on every day. But I try! ;-)

I have found that 30m is *quite* a bit of fun... and I think you will, too.
Most of my OPS to date (on PSK) have been on 20m, but I'm seriously thinking
of changing my "home band".

Welcome, and hope the band opens enough for us to be able to work each
other. My station is simple - I only have a vertical for HF, and I think
that hampers be a bit with the DX, but I have been able to work VK stations
on PSK and I also worked 3Y0X on 20m Phone... so it CAN be done!

I apologize for my not being around for some time ... I've been off the air and will be for a a bit longer.  But, as soon as I have bits and bytes flying into the ether, I'll be back on 30m :-)

Larry nk2x,

Hope all is well and we look forward to seeing you on the waterfall
again on 30meters. Hope to see you soon back on the band.

BTW, I have noticed the last few nights that the PSK activity is
increasing I seem to see a number of psk operators each night vs none
or darn few and far between a few months or a year ago.

All because of your fine stewardship of the band, Don!! Your promotion of
digital modes on 30 is what got me interested in the first place... Now, if
I can just find the TIME to be able to get on the air.

It's a real shame when work gets in the way of the hobby, isn't it??
hehehehe
