Just for information:

I received this answer from Joe, N8FQ and Rick KV9U.

Q: Is MFSK16 analog SSTV allowed on 30m in the US?

A(1): Yes, as of December 15, 2006. SSTV/FAX with less than 500 Hz bandwidth
is legal anywhere digital text is.

A(2): Yes, thanks to Mark, N5RFX, who petitioned the FCC last year, the
decision was made to allow any kind of image transmission (analog or
digital) in text digital portions of the bands here in the U.S.,
provided that they are 500 Hz or less in bandwidth.

The FCC redefined "data" to include image when under 500 Hz and can be
found at:

       '97.3 Definitions.

(c)(2) Data.Telemetry, telecommand and computer communications emissions
having (i) designators with A, C, D, F, G, H, J or R as the first
symbol, 1 as the second symbol, and D as the third symbol; (ii) emission
J2D; and (iii) emissions A1C, F1C, F2C, J2C, and J3C having an occupied
bandwidth of 500 Hz or less when transmitted on an amateur service
frequency below 30 MHz. Only a digital code of a type specifically
authorized in this part may be transmitted.

Here are some interpretations of the ITU Emission Classifications:

A1C = DSB AM digital FAX with no subcarrier

F1C = FM FAX digital modulation with no subcarrier (MFSK)

F2C = FM digital FAX with subcarrier

J2C = digital SSB FAX with subcarrier

J3C = analog SSB FAX

Howdy,
I'm still looking to make a 30M QSO with a station in
Minnesota.
Are there any members who are from Minnesota who would like
to try a sched?

I don't see why it would be illegal it's MFSK16.
If it is not legal, I have broken the law.
I have seen some PSK signals that scribe "73" on the
waterfall at the end of a qso so MFSK16 SSTV should be OK.

Hi Delbert, well that's the thing, it isn't MFSK16 or even digital. It is
just analogue SSTV so I was just checking with more knowledgeable folks!

Hi Delbert,

From the twin cities, Minnesota. Have worked a few stations in Texas
on 30 meter PSK31. I don't think today or tomorrow would be to good.
Were having a snow storm and is supposed to continue over night into
tomorrow. Afternoons around 15:30 to 17:00 CST seem to be a good time.
Maybe set up a schedule next week?

Delbert and Sholto,

Thanks for posting that question and the answer to using MFSK16 but
sending SSTV type pictures...now another question:

How do you do what using MFSK16? Could one of you 'old school' us on
how that is done because over the many years of digital modes used
here in EN50dp I don't think I have ever tried that before and that
sounds interesting to me (regular SSTV many many times but not via
MFSK). Can you give/list step by step how you actually send a pic
using MFSK16? I think this would be a fun activity on 30 meters.

Don,

MixW and Multipsk have the SSTV for MFSK16

On MixW find a image bmp or jpg:

From the MixW help file, MFSK image mode:
The pictures should be small, no larger than about 250 x 200 pixels.
The operation is much easier if the picture is put in the MixW folder,
but that is not required.

The sending station should inform the receiving station that a picture
is about to be sent. Then the sending operator should select File |
Send Picture and then choose B/W... or Color.... The following dialog
box will open. (There is a image in the MixW help file shows the file
being selected), but open the image and a dialog will appear to send
image.

Multipsk open the help file, and MFSK16, the information is there.

Works kind of neat, but the signals have to be 569 or better or the
image will not be received by the other station.

GA,

I thought yesterday I would take a few hours to try to translate our
homepage in a few different languages (well, actually it might have
taken longer than just a few hours as I could only translate a number
of words at a time). So, if you have time please give this a look
over and for sure those of you already here that are DX outside USA
that use languages of Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Swedish,
Portuguese, Itailian, Russian, Japanese, Arabic, etc....please look
it over and I hope it might help others outside the USA or non-
English DX stations feel more welcome as we sure DO want to include
them here.

http://www.30meterdigital.org

I think it would be nice to have maybe a couple dedicated Hams that
speak a specific language dedicated as 'contact' people so if there
are questions they can ask in their own language, agreed? I will
work on that in the next month or two and try to have again dedicated
contact folks.. I.E. for our FRENCH page a stations from France or
Canada that can speak french be a contact on that page with their
email address for questions. I thought maybe translating some of
what is on our homepage and what we are about and tring to do might
help others outside the U.S.A., hope you agree and your comments or
feedback welcome (any DX station knowing another language please
email kb9umt@... if you would like to be a contact person as
stated).

Sholto's Spot Page....Sholto, can you please also add below the 30
Meter PSK Yahoo Group link a link to www.30meterdigital.org ?? Would
that be okay if you have time to do that? I would appreciate it.

Tim, N9PUZ...I really appreciate you dedicating 'auto' Spot Reports
to show the band's activity. It really does show us a few things. I
have noticed some DX show up at times I would not normally look for
them, I have noticed many times there are CQs but no replies so we
sure could use some more dedicated 30 meter ops in my view to answer
those replies, I noticed that next time I want to make contact with
you 70 miles south of me or so that I will try my vertical to you as
it seems you Spot me when using the vertical but do not see my
signals on my 30m rotatable dipole...but again THANK YOU for your
Spots Tim and Sholto for a way to interface this neat idea...again,
anyone in EU anyone in EU or SA that would like to help on
the 'auto' spots on our 30m Spot Page??

Thanks

ps. will be on the band tonight so hope to see some of you, the ice
here didn't get the large 30m rotatable dipole up on the tower so we
are still ready to go here in EN50dp (now if it would stop
storming/lightening..humm, in December?)

For those that do not know I am in grid square EM59ft. That is about
3-4 miles straight East of Springfield, IL just about in the center of
the state. We live in the country and have electrically quiet
conditions here most of the time.

My main station is modest but has served me well. The 30 meter
spotting is done with a GAP Titan DX vertical and an Icom IC-718
transceiver. The vertical probably favors DX over the closer stations
like Don.

This morning I upgraded the spotting program to Sholto's latest
version. I don't know all the particulars but this latest version is
supposed to reduce duplicate spots to keep the web page uncluttered.

It's been interesting to see what the auto-spotter hears. Like Don I
see activity at times I wouldn't have normally thought might be
productive. For the time being I plan to keep the auto-spotter active
except when there are storms in the area or times when I can actually
go operate myself.

Another thing that's interesting is to look at some of the propagation
tools available. I did _not_ want to be an expert in this area. If
you're of a like mind then check out the information here for a nice,
no cost tool...

in a row to get to that new forum's admin panel to try to make one of
you admin/mod with no luck I was very upset with it. I decided last
night before going to bed that with no luck of changing anything I
would just link back here to this Yahoo 30m PSK Forum...so that is what
I did.

I finally just tonight was able to post a message to the other new
forum and I even finally got to the admin panel and I hope changed both
you and Trey to admin's and moderators of that new forum. See if you
have rights not to change things or make that one work. I really don't
have the time for both forums so I will leave the new one up to you and
Trey and if you can improve on it then link back up to it..is that
okay? I really have dedicated all the free time I have to the new
30MDG website, new applicants/certificates, and this Yahoo 30m PSK
Group forum (I also run a couple other Yahoo forums/groups and the
largest one that takes even more time than all these being the
http://www.HamRadioHelp.com Ham Radio Help Yahoo Group w/over 3,200
members).

Thanks for the post and I was going to post this today but again if you
can get things going we will link back up to it on the 30MDG website to
that new forum.

All,

If you were not around the 30m band yesterday you missed the band in
good condition (finally after days of it not being in any shape). I
noticed many PSK signals yesterday for Sunday 30m PSK and also some
RTTY (most DX) and also MFSK....made a number of contacts and the band
was really in nice shape (you can check the 30m Spot page for data on
some of the action). I got to rag chew with a few of you and made a
couple of DX contacts....heck even got Sholto to send me a picture
using MFSK so that was neat...all in all a really nice time of
operation for a few hours on 30 meters.

Now as Delbert has mentioned we had an Alaska station come in and with
a very nice signal to boot, that was fun and I think or hope some of
you might need that state on 30m and if so I went ahead and gave him
our spill both on the air and also in an email after the contacts.
Here is his reply:

Hi All

Well 30 meters is alive and kicking - today 1700 - 1830 UTC, I had 71
QSO's with EU - 18 DXCC entities, 53 WPX - all on RTTY. Unfortunately
nothing heard on the Long or Short Path from the USA - 1 'G' station
called numerous times but was 'swamped' each time by Italy and Germany -
  - I could just not pull him out of the QRM! Sorry!!! Sure hope condx
improve to USA sn!

Hmmm, I see you've had the key out of the drawer again Rob! B-)
I've not heard a sig at all on 30M since 0000Z and little before then.

I have been having daily scheds with W6DEI (Peter) in Berkeley, CA,
for the past four weeks or so. 10.140 / PSK31 , 2300 UTC.

Peter is using an out-of-tune dipole, and I'm using a 16' vertical
sticking out from my balcony, with the balcony railing as a
counterpoise. My antenna qualifies as "compromised".

We generally run 30-50 watts, and contacts have been reliable -- some
days are better than others, but we haven't had "no contact" yet.

Just a little bit more solar flux would help . . . <g>

Hello everyone,

I have an idea and wanted to get some feedback before implementing it. Would
anyone be interested in receiving an email or cell phone SMS alert when
conditions on 30m are "happening" or a specific entity shows up?

With the autospot software it is possible to measure the number of different
stations transmitting in a given time period.

So say, there were 20 different calls in 5 minutes, maybe that would
indicate a good time to get on the band?

The alert could also be programmed to look for a certain entity callsign -
so if you wanted South Africa, you would get an email when a Zulu Sierra
turned up (if it was spotted by someone within a "close" distance to you).

Depending on the feedback I will look into implementing this. I don't intend
to charge anything for it because there is no way to guarantee anything, but
it's possible that using SMS would involve a charge.

Don, I'd be happy to help in any way I can and I certainly have the time
to moderate on the group's web forum. I still can't get into the forum
because the link is pointing at the Yahoo group page but when things are
squared away, I'll try to sort things out and get it rolling to see if
it will work. I have a feeling many of the Yahoo group people prefer to
use the mailing/reflector list rather than the forum but we will see...

Hello Sholto,

Are you aware of the "internet alert" software developed by KF6XA for Propnet
which, I believe, does what you are looking for, at least for Propnet signals.

You tell the software (as of last report, just tell Dave) how often you want to
be alerted to the receipt of YOUR signal by another Propnet station (on whatever
band.) When a Propnet station reports a catch to findu, Dave's software notices
and sends you an e-mail alert.

Don't know if Dave wants to increase the utilization of his program right now
but at least I thought it was worth letting you know.

Ed

Hi Ed,

Yes I had come across that before but as you say it is just for Propnet. I
suspect from the Propnet weekend there are a lot of US stations using it but
not so many DX stations.

The biggest hurdle I see to doing it with our data is getting more people
auto-spotting. Currently we only have Tim N9PUZ, John VK2XGJ and myself.
None of us run 24hr/day.

Regarding the alert feature - it's probably a step too far right now but
maybe in the future.

By the way, I will repeat the request: Anyone (anywhere!) want to try
autospotting for the spot page? If you have a registered version of MultiPSK
contact me and I will send you the software to test!
