I decided to start a group on the 20th Massachusetts because I
believe this regiment has not been given their due. While
watching "Gettysburg", "Gods and Generals" or any movie or documentry
I have not heard this regiment mentioned once. I also want to learn
more about these brave soldiers since I am sure their are people out
there who could teach me alot.

The anniversary of the Battle of Balls Bluff has just passed. This
was the first engagement for the 20th and gave a glimpse at the
courage and valor that was the core of the 20th. If you ever
are in the metro DC area, take some time to visit the small
battlefield park in Virginia (Situated in/near a residential
neighborhood)and see the actual terrain. It's very quiet there and it
is easy to imagine the events of the day as they took place. I just
shook my head in wonder.

I have been trying to put some pictures in the photo section, but have
only been able to get one in(I have no idea what I'm doing wrong).
The picture is of General Darius Couch who was the commander of the
Second Corps when the 20th Massachusetts fought at Fredricksburg. I
will try to get more photos in when I can. Feel free to add photos.

I am new to the group and have been looking for an ancestor who
fought in the Civil War. He was from Delaware and I searched all of
the regiments from Delaware and came up with nothing. His last name
was Cowgill and I have since found out he may have fought for the
20th Massachusetts. I would like to know if this is true and any
other information anybody here may have on him.

In the regimental history, there is listed a Charles Cowgill
credited to Dover , DE. He enlisted as a private in Company H , Aug
29, 1861 at the age of 25. He was comissioned 2nd LT 14 Dec, 1862
and promoted to 1st LT 16 May 1863. Roster shows he resigned 9 Mar
1864. I would strongly suggest you get a copy of the regimental
history, The Twentieth Massachusetts Volunteers by George A. Bruce.
Since it was published in 1906, I was lucky to find a reprint copy on
Ebay. I hope this helps.

Hello-
I bought the regimental history of the 20th from someone named,  I believe, E. Clayton Thomas. I could not find him when I just tried to. I think he is out of Philidelphia. He sells regimental histories.
Try searching for cival war book dealers--press search. You should come up with many dealers.
Good luck---Brendan

I got my 20th regimental history from Articles of War bookstore that
is in New Mexico. Their e-mail address is warbooks@.... The price
of the book can be anywhere between $35-$120 depending on the
condition of the book and if it's an original or a reprint. I got
mine for $50 and it was in great condition.

I have added two lists in the database section. One is a list of
officers from the Twentieth Massachusetts who were killed during the
Civil War. The other is a list of officers who commanded the regiment
at one time during the war.

I also put up two polls and put pictures in the files section. Hope
to add more soon.

I am searching for any information on Pvt. George L. Plant of 20th Massachusetts Infantry, Company A.  He may be a relative and I am trying to confirm that.  He apparently came from England and was killed at Gettysburg on July 3.  He was married to Ann Plant in England.  It seems he was taken prisoner at Savage Station on June 29, 1862.  I do have his military records, but I was hoping for more information in them. I would like to find any further information on this man.  I would be most appreciative if anyone knows of any additional information on him or the unit he was with.

It was 141 years ago that the 20th Massachusetts made their charge
through the streets of Fredricksburg and drove the Confedrates out of
the city. Two days later the Twentieth would be one of the many
regiments to attempt to take Mayre's Heights with disastrous results.
By the end of the two battles the Twentieth would lose 50 soldiers
and another 114 wounded.

I am sure some of you have alresdy read this but for those who
haven't there are a couple of articles on the Twentieth's struggle
within the ranks between the upper class officers and the foreign
born officers. One incident has four german sergeants being promoted
to lieutenant. Lt.Colonel Palfrey was given orders to commission them
but, instead wrote a letter to General Dana complaining that these men
were unfit to be an officer. Palfrey had written that one Sergeant
(who had transferred from another regiment) had disgraced himself at
Bull Run by running from battle. It is odd he said that since
thousands of federal soldiers ran and on top of that no one from the
Twentieth was even at Bull Run to witness what happened.

I am amazed that this regiment was still able to distingush itself in
battle with this kind of division between their officers. It shows
how dedicated these men were to their duty.

I will also say that there are two sides to every story. If you want
to read the articles go to http://www.millerrf.com and you will see a
list of articles about Massachusetts during the Civil War. You must
have Adobe to read the articles.

Today I stood at the intersection of Caroline & Hawke
Streets comparing the painting "Assault up Caroline
Street" with the buildings marveling at the
accomplishment of the brave men of the 20th
Massachusetts Infantry. An awesome feat, now largely
unknown or ignored by the folks rushing along on their
holiday errands. Oh the tales the walls could speak!

One of the articles caught my attention. It stated that over 200
soldiers had filed a petition wanting a lieutenant removed from
command because he was cruel. It is interesting because this happened
on an episode of Band of Brothers when the NCOs got rid of their
captain because of his cruelty. What happened to this officer? Were
the soldiers sucessful.

I have just received information from millerrf.com that a new book
has been written about the 20th Massachusetts called, "The History of
the Harvard Regiment". Unfortunatly, it will not be out until the
Fall of 2005. The book is published by University Press of New
England.

I would have fought for the south because it would have preserved the
union. Slavery was doomed to fail, anyway.
