I've already considered this for the horse sculpt. The sheets I use
are one mm thick so this problem could occur. So what I've done is
that I've rounded the edges so the material thickness doesn't get in
the way. In some places where I really want to add putty on the
outlines I've made the outline smaller. In that way I can still
follow the shape and add putty on the outside.

By the way, this would not work on the legs of a real thin-legged
creature like a deer. Then you'd probably have to go for a wire
armature. At least for the legs.

The Daeodon looks like it's off to a good start. Can I post the links
over at modelsculpt.ru? They should be interested in seeing what you
are doing.

That sounds fine. Go for a humanoid I'd say.

Ok, VIP 12 proposal is a sculpt based on a description. Group question:
how do you like the idea and are you joining in? I am.

I'm in, I need all the practice I can get *lol*

Working from a description sounds like fun too, if I can get it nailed
it'd help me out as I can't draw anything, let alone a concept sketch!

Cheers,

Rik

Another suggestion, castlegardener makes a description. Somebody (me?)
makes a concept drawing. The later is posted in the files section and
participants can choose whether they will only go for the description
or the drawings (which will be concept sketches - don't expect a full
drawing :) ).

Is a fantasy figure ok for you people?

Sounds good, that way people can draw from both the sketch and the
description, allowing for some 'artistic expression'

Sounds cool! I'd prefer a historical figure but thats just me, I only sculpt
historical for the most part. I guess fantasy would be an inteesting change from
all the 15h century Serbs.

ok...from the looks of things, everyone wants to try to sculpt from a
descriptive paragraph i will write up... i will make it a fantasy
humanoid figure...let me know when everyone is ready and i will get
the description done...i will wait just a bit longer to ensure all the
discussion is finished...

I'm still determined to get my VIP 10 and 11 pieces done :) If I can
stop with the 12 hour days at work maybe I can throw in on this one and
finish the others. I kinda think that doing the project without a
concept drawing might be neater because it we could really see
everyone's interpretation of the description, whereas a concept drawing
to go off of would add a lot more direction.

Since we have a fair bit of momentum, can you work on the description
this weekend and then send it to me so I can work on the sketch

That's where the corrections come in. ;) Also, one of the reasons I
like apoxie sculpt. Most parts are at least 50% apoxie. A knife and
a file and that should whittle down with few problems.

Ditto.

I'd considered something like this: breaking off the lower, thinner
parts to leave bare wire as a 'standard' armature, both as a remedy
for this leg problem and a possible adaptation for further
armatures. Then they broke off anyway when I squeezed too hard with
pliers, trying to push the wire into the cork. :P No huge setback.

I thought I'd post links to my new website on my hybrid
modeling/tooling waxes.

Since I'm a member of several forums and find it difficult to keep up
with all the questions that come my way, especially if they don't
come directly to me, I'd like to ask 2 favors:

1) Please ask questions about the waxes through my contact form on
the website. I'd love to be able to answer questions in the forum so
all can see, but there just aren't enough hours in a day to do so. If
you'd like to post the question and answers back to the forum, please
do it as you see fit.

2) Please read the FAQ and look through the catalog ( viewable online
or can be downloaded) before asking questions. I've spent a LOT of
time trying to make information on these waxes readily available
online.

Here's the links:

Main site: http://www.willowproducts.com/index/documents/default/home

FAQ: http://www.willowproducts.com//media/documents/FAQ.pdf

Catalog: http://www.willowproducts.com/media/documents/Catalog.pdf

If you want to order , I accept Paypal. You order first, then I send

Theres some brief mention of it here and there but its really pretty easy. I
assume the feathers will be free standing, in this case, but out an armature
shape from an extremely thin sheet of brass with tin snips, and sink it into the
head or the base of the headdress, wherever it will be attached to the model. A
dab of superglue may help as its likely to be small and fiddly. Then mix up some
green, preferably I blue-heavy mix, and apply it in a thin layer around the
brass and form it into the shape of the feather. Then using a very sharp Xacto
knife (sharpen it before cutting if its a very small feather) cut a vertical ine
in the feather, then on either side of it cut numerous little horizontal lines
such that the feather looks to be covered in many V's on top of each other, with
a line running down the center. Look at pics of real feathers if this
description is unclear. Its a bit fiddly, but with a few tries it should be no
trouble at all, I use this method for
fletching and it looks pretty decent. Try a few off the model and then you'll
be good to go.

Hope thats of some help
