Hello, For years I always did the head first but after reading the advice of
various other sculptors on this site I decide to change my mehtods and it really
is easier to get the final proportions right by doing the legs and body first.
It is far easier to see if the head is o.k. when it is matched to a torso..Tony

Greetings everyone! I have a rather silly question...

(let me give you some background...I teach miniature doll costuming for a
living click here to see what my style is like www.MiniatureArt.com ...but
decided this month to move up to sculpting AND costuming...and after a
couple weeks efforts...I'd rather scrub toilets BUT know I have to do this
and its a matter of principle now <G> hahah)

So the question of the day is... does anyone EVER sculpt the whole body and
do the head last? I seriously can do ok torsos (for a newbie) etc but when
it comes to the head, I can't *see* it unless there is a body to attach it
to and sculpt it by. Does this make sense?

I've been researching, joining, buying sculpting books all month..and they
all say do the head first, because you can judge the like 1/2 head for chin
length etc etc or whatever...but thats just CONFUSING to me personally.
When I dress my dolls, I work from the inside out, and the bottom up
(literally do the shoes, the pantaloons, petticoats, skirt, bodice, jewelry
   and wigging)....

So is this something I can be good at (i.e. sculpting torso first) ,... or
do I have to grit my teeth and do the head first?

Confused but trying <G> ... and all my bathrooms are CLEAN! ahahah ha

Those are truely gorgeous sculpts.

You might want to try to contact Rackham also (those who make
Confrontation the game). Not long ago, they where looking for 5 new
sculptors.

Good luck,

Cedric

Hi all,

And yet another miniature. Probably my last for a while for I put a
little too much time and try and try again in this last figure. I
think there isn't a part I haven't atleast done twice and I used at
least 4 mini's worth of putty trying. So I've quite had it for a
little while (probably ;-)But I'm quite happy with the result. Back
to the drawing table for me the next weeks, been neglecting my
drawing completely due to the mini-rage that had come over me ;-).
And as always here is the link to the folder it's in:

Very nice, esp the head and feet are well done I think. The weapon
also. The shield edges is abit rough I think but the emblem on it
is good.

I understand how fustrating it is to work over certain parts. My
WIP at the moment is a goblin which I started 2-3 months ago. The
head/face I have done more than 10 times and still I can't get it
right >:(

Yep frustrating alright. The Anubis head you see is in fact the 8th
one. It kept on looking like goofy or a kangeroo, if Egypt had a
kangaroo god I would have made it. At one point I even thought about
sticking a kangeroo tail to the figure and get it over with :-)But
since Anubis is my favorite Egyptian god ... Still the head is a tad
to big but that seems to happen more often in miniatures so I try not
to let that bother me. And perhaps one day in the future I'll do a
few tiny improvements (if I feel like it that is) but right now I
just don't see it anymore, so I'd better let it rest now I'm happy
with it.

If I remember greek mythology correctly the male counterpart to nymphs
were pan. You know the flute playing goat legged, horned swarthy
individuals. Quite popular with the ladies. I'm sure there are some minis
that fit the description, just can't think of any current ones.

That's exactly the way I do it and it seems to work fine for me. Doing a
mock up for size and positioning and then coming back at the end for face

Hi all,

I'm thinking about doing a dwarf next when the mini-fever will hit me
again. The male dryad is going into the ideas vault for now. I love
dwarves and I'm planning to draw a few for starters. But just how
tall are dwarves supposed to be in the 28 mm scale? And what are the
most used proportions between head and the rest of the body? In most
pictures the head seems to be taking up nearly a thirth of the whole
figure.

OK, I distinctly (OK, maybe not so distinctly) remember reading that someone
here used a larger gauge wire for the armature and a soldering iron to melt 32
or 34 gauge wire into it to make it stay in shape. I'm making a fairly large
scenery piece for my VIC piece and need a quick review of what was used for
this technique. I'm hoping I remembered it right (I won't be wasting too much
wire if I remembered it incorrectly), but after 45 minutes searching the
archives for this info, I decided to break down and just ask. Any help from
anyone
out there, please?

Excellent! Very life-like. Very severe look. Must have been a good

the same size, must have been time consuming.... The beard on the
chin looks abit unsymetric though.

Very few real beards are symetrical, mine isn't!

Even the part in one's hair usually favors one side!

Hi Gael, very nice indeed, uusual to see something from the Second
Empire. Out of interest is it pure Green Stuff or have you added
something. The relief work looks really sharp.Tony Aldrich

So does anyone already make/sell 15mm armatures?

If no one makes them for sale, does anyone have any recommendations
on making them? What material to use, what size?

I'm planning on sculpting 15mm fantasy models, then casting in
resin.

Thanks in advance.

I just added 2 views of a figure I'm working one. I didn't bother
showing the rear of him as he will be leaning against a wall. I plan
to paint the green once it is finished as part of a larger display.
Yes I know his legs are too short. ;)
