In this reading group we concentrate on novels of the 18th and 19th centuries. Writers from this time period include, but are certainly not limited to, Jane Austen, Anne Bronte, Charlotte Bronte, Emily Bronte, Fanny Burney, John Cleland, Wilkie Collins, Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Henry Fielding, Sarah Fielding, Elizabeth Gaskell, Thomas Hardy, Nathanial Hawthorne, Washington Irving, Henry James, Ann Radcliffe, Samuel Richardson, Mary Shelley, Tobias Smollett, Laurence Sterne, Robert Louis Stevenson, Bram Stoker, Jonathan Swift, William Makepeace Thackeray, Horace Walpole, Oscar Wilde, and others. We will read and discuss one book per month. Our books are chosen by nomination and poll. We'll discuss both the author and the book and also look at essays and reviews about some of these works.
