This group is for volunteers working together to compile and publish a substitute for the lost 1890 census of Muscogee County, Georgia, including the City of Columbus. When completed, this publication will be made available to the public; once research, printing, and binding costs have been covered, proceeds will benefit the fund to rescue the historic Clapp's Factory Cemetery in Muscogee County.
Practically all of the original (and only) schedules of the eleventh decennial general population census of the U.S. were destroyed as the result of a fire in a Department of Commerce building in 1921. We hope to draw on county and city records, local newspapers, and other sources to reconstruct this census for Muscogee County, creating a valuable tool for genealogists and historical researchers, and also benefiting the ongoing effort to preserve one of the county's oldest cemeteries.
