We are sorry to inform about very sad demise of Prof Ajit Soman – professor of English, a scriptwriter, musician – a knowledgeable and humble human being! Ajit Soman was a musician par excellence, he played flute for many classical, semi classical and light music concerts, also composed music, background scores. He was a founder member of Jazz-Shastriya music group called “Antigravity” in 80’s. He had a long association as a flautist with classical dancers in Maharastra such as NrityaPandita Rohini Bhate and NrityaBharati family, Dr. Sucheta Bhide- Chapekar and Kalavardhini family and many more. He was a lyricist who wrote many jingles, lyrics for serials (such as Raau, feature film Devi AhilyaBai, etc), ballets, Thumaris for Kathak dancers. He had an amazing command on Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit, English languages. He contributed for more than 15 years as a lecturer for Applied Music, Music appreciation and any such courses at Lalit Kala Kendra, University of Pune. He was writer of textbooks for these courses, too. Ajit Soman was a scriptwriter for many documentary films, audio-visual shows. He was main consultant for Alurkar Music House and wrote inlay notes for the audio-visual productions. He was founder member and mentor of many organizations in Pune including “Swarananda”, “Sugam”, “Asha Publicity”, etc. We knew him as a “living encyclopedia”! He was “AjaatShatru” (man with no enemies) kind of person – very cheerful and active! Ajit Soman was really a backbone for cultural activities in Pune!
