Actually, it was a Yule tree for hundreds of years. It's been less than 200 years since they began to be associated with Christmas. When I was in Germany for three years, locals used to regale us with their traditional lore. That's where I learned the true origin. I know you've heard of a parallel tradition - the yule log.
Calling it a Holiday Tree began in the far west some decades ago. It's overspread the country only recently. One of several reasons was the proximity of other seasonal traditions and their adoption of a decorated evergreen as part their observances as well. While I don't expect to see one next to or replacing the Menorah, I've seen holiday trees in the homes of a few Jewish families I've known over the years.
I'm rather sure most folks will still call it a Christmas Tree more often than
they'll say Holiday Tree. I guess I'm a bit more ecumenical than many - it does not disturb me in the least to hear it called a Holiday Tree. Having studied other faiths while in Bible college out in Oregon, I came to accept and respect the legitimacy of other faith traditions.

That refers to the tradition of erecting a decorated and lighted evergreen by most Americans around the 25th of December...an adaptation of a pagan custom that originated in Germany at Yuletide.

A drunk was proudly showing off his new apartment to a couple of his friends late one night. He led the way to his bedroom where there was a big brass gong and a mallet.
'What's with that big brass gong?' one of the guests asked.
'It's not a gong. It's a talking clock,' the drunk replied.
'A talking clock? Seriously?' asked his astonished friend.
'Yup,' replied the drunk.
'How's it work?' the friend asked, squinting at it.
'Watch,' the drunk replied. He picked up the mallet, gave the gong an ear-shattering pound, and stepped back.
The three stood looking at one another for a moment.......
Suddenly, someone on the other side of the wall screamed, 'You asshole! It's three-fifteen in the morning!

Where can I find a history of the 12th US Infantry in the Civil War? A professor of mine wrote a book on William B. Franklin, who shortly served as a Colonel in the 12th before being promoted, and I wanted to do some other reading on the general history of the regiment in the war.
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
Timothy J. Reese's book "Sykes' Regular Infantry Division, 1861-1864"
is a good place to start. I looked quickly through the appendix. The
12th (both Battalions) were never commanded by higher than a Captain
after Major Henry Clitz mustered the regiment. 1st Lt. Walter S
Franklin had Co. C 1st Battalion.

I just got a pre-declined credit card in the mail. Hot Wheels and Matchbox stocks are trading higher than GM and Ford. Motel Six won't leave the light on for ya, and a truckload of Americans was caught sneaking into Mexico!
I heard that parents in Beverly Hills had to fire their nannies and learn their children's names. And as if that weren't bad enough, I ordered a burger at McDonald's and the kid behind the counter asked "Can you afford fries with that?" And now Mickey-Dee's is selling the Quarter-Ouncer.
So if the bank returns my check marked "insufficient funds" I have to call to ask if they meant me or them! But there's a small measure of justice - all their bigwig execs are reduced to playing miniature golf!
Aggh! It's too much. I'm reduced to
drinking the house brand. Woe is me...

The following appeared in last week's edition of the Eagle Newspapers - please read and consider.
Group Awarded Underground Railroad Prize
The Smithfield Community Association of Peterboro has been awarded the 2009 Underground Railroad Free Press Prize for leadership by an international panel of judges. The Underground Railroad Free Press, a news publication, annually awards prizes for contemporary Underground Railroad leadership, preservation and advancement of knowledge. Organizers in Peterboro were honored for their work in establishing the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum and the preservation of the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark and the Smithfield Community Center.
The 12th US
has every reason to rejoice in this award. This year was the seventeenth annual Civil War Weekend in Peterboro, a major fund-raiser for the Smithfield Community Association's preservation efforts. We've been honored to have been the military hosts for this event, and everyone associated with the Association acknowledges their efforts would have gone nowhere without us.
It matters. We matter. The dedication, service and sacrifice of our forebears matters, and we proudly honor their memory through our efforts. Yes, it's fun and we do it in large measure for fun - but I thought it'd be nice if the group was also made aware of how important our contribution is to non-reenactors. So, pat yourselves on the back, guys and gals - we done good!
Bill Mayers aka Capt. Will Nickel, Surgeon, 12th US
A version of this letter will be submitted to the reenacting press -

Hello, 12th,
This is to let all of you know (and mark your calendars) that the date of Erie
Canal has been changed for next year to July 10 and 11. This is a permanent
change. If you have been there anytime in the last few years you probably have
noticed a decrease in spectators. This year we were lucky if we had 2 dozen a
day. Rome has been running a huge festival on those days, and we needed to get
away from that weekend. July 10 and 11 were the only dates that were good for
us and for Melody. We should be able get our spectators back. The year of the
150th Gettysburg is open to change. Linda

EVE'S SIDE OF THE STORY
After three weeks in the Garden of Eden,God came to visit Eve. "So, how is everything going?" inquired God.
"It is all so beautiful, God," she replied. "The sunrises and sunsets are breathtaking, the smells, the sights, everything is wonderful, but I have just one problem.
It's these breasts you have given me. The middle one pushes the other two out and I am constantly knocking them with my arms, catching them on branches and snagging them on bushes. They're a real pain."
And Eve went on to tell God that since many other parts of her body came in pairs, such a s her limbs, eyes, ears, etc. She felt that having only two breasts might leave her body more "symmetrically balanced".
"That's a fair point," replied God, "But it was my first shot at this, you know. I gave the animals six breasts, so I figured that you needed only half of those, but I see that you are right. I will fix it up right away."
And God reached down, removed the middle breast and tossed it into the bushes.
Three weeks passed and God once again visited Eve in the Garden of Eden.
"Well, Eve, how is my favorite creation?"
"Just fantastic," she replied, "But for one oversight. You see, all the animals are paired off. The ewe has a ram and the cow has her bull. All the animals have a mate except me.. I feel so alone. "
God thought for a moment and said, "You know, Eve, you are right. How could I have overlooked this? You do need a mate and I will immediately create a man from a part of you. Let's see....where did I put that useless boob?"
Now doesn't THAT make more sense than all that crap about the rib?
Send to men with a sense of humor & women who figure this makes sense.
