Known as a jewel in the community, the 101 Artists Colony was founded in 1998
and over the years has
provided affordable studio space in downtown Encinitas for dozens of artists,
space for exhibitions including the
highly acclaimed Children of Chernobyl Art Exhibitions, and a venue for
musical and spoken word
performances. In addition, the Colony supports its sister organization, Full
Moon Poets, with its popular twice
yearly poetry slams at the La Paloma Theatre, and open poetry readings that are
held once a month on the full
moon. The first Arts Alive Banner Project was presented by DEMA and 101 Artists
Colony in 1998. The
program has since spread to downtowns across the country. 2009 marks the 10th
Anniversary of Arts Alive
in Encinitas.
